Another proactive practice is carried out when making the nursery bed was that I laid and burnt some dried weed over the nursery area. This is to reduce disease and pest load in the nursery area.

Additional the ashes would also serve as manure for the seedlings.

Cypermethrin should handle crickets around the bed, but spraying the surrounding area too is important since they can cut seedlings overnight. Just ensure the nursery is not drenched with it, and keep an eye on damping-off as watering starts.

Like you suggested, I do spray surrounding areas as well to keep crickets and other pests away. The bed is high enough for proper drainage after wetting or rainfall. I also have copper-based fungi for prevention of damping-off or diseases.

Now be specific, which of the afore mentioned insecticides did you actually sprayed to the nursery plants abi na combination of those 3 you applied?

I sprayed one brand of cypermethrin based insecticide because that is what is currently available. I'm yet to stock up on agrochemicals.

Just like most fruit vegetables, nursery for eggplant is a critical step towards the success of the farm. A healthy nursery is a good pointer towards bountiful harvest.

The nursery can be done using seed trays or on raised beds. It is expected to sit 4 - 6 weeks after sprouting in the nursery depending on the growth rate. For this project, we are doing our nursery on raised beds.

One 4litres plastic measurement of cured manure is broadcasted and tilled into a raised bed of 3m length and 1m width. This is to ensure constant nutrient supply to the young seedlings through their stay in the nursery.

The seeds are mixed with one 4litres plastic measurement of dried sand and broadcasted on the raised bed. This is to proper spread of the seeds on the bed. Without the sand, there is a tendency for seeds to cluster at some spots. This encourages overcrowding, stunted growth and/or damping-off if moisture is too much.

After seed broadcast, light layer of soil is spread over the seeds to cover them, watering can is used to water lightly and a strong pungent insecticide (sharpshooter, ironforce, dimeforce etc) is sprayed over the nursery and surrounding areas to keep crickets and other pests away.

Freshly cut palm fronds are used to cover the bed until signs of sprouting are noticed within 1week.

Over here in Ogun State, if you properly understand market dynamics for your selected crop enterprise, you'll so much cash out that people will assume you did ritual.

By market dynamics, I don't mean targeting festive seasons oo because that is what most farmers do.

How many plots of land are you planning to use for cultivating the garden egg?

The planting is done in staggered batches.
First batch is intercropped with cucumber and currently flowering and fruiting; transplanting for second batch is currently in progress; while third batch nursery will commence soonest. Total land area will be over 1acre.

We are also running heirloom rodo as well but I may create a separate thread for that.

Hopefully, I will update pictures of stand from the first and second batch tomorrow.

A brief intro about the farm location:

Our farm location is domiciled in Ogun State. It is a partially swamp land on a gentle slope that terminates in a little stream.

The reason we chose this site for the project is because garden egg loves enough soil moisture for optimum yield.

Also, the stream will be an excellent source of water during the dry season for irrigation.

We intend cultivating the garden egg in batches on over 1acre of land. First batch just started flowering and fruiting; second batch transplanting is almost completed while the unit processes of the third batch will be recorded here for others to learn.

Garden egg also known as eggplant is a popular fruity vegetable. Depending on the variety, it is either consumed fresh as a snack or boiled and used in preparing sauce.

If you have never eaten garden egg sauce together with boiled/roasted plantain, yam or cocoyam, you are definitely missing a health and nutritious meal that is packed with enough minerals and vitamins.

For the purpose of this project, we shall focus on the agribusiness of white and green snack garden egg varieties.

Whenever you hear the word "tomato", what pops up in your mind? To some, it is just a vegetable; a few others regard it as a commodity to be traded; while to others, it is one of the available vegetables that has the highest hectare value. Agrobizwise regards it as the King of Vegetables because of its high hectare value, culinary uses and cosmetic applications. FLUTED PUMPKIN
Fluted pumpkin commonly called Ugu is one of the widely consumed vegetable in Nigeria due to its high nutrient-packed value. Cultivated by seeds, it is mostly produced in the Southern parts of the country. The plant is classified into crawling and climbing or small-leaved and big-leaved by some local farmers. Yield depends on the variety of seed planted and good agronomic practice.
When properly planned, the viability of Ugu enterprise is not in doubt because it has long harvesting period.
Enterprises present in Ugu value chain includes; seeds production, leaves production, leaves marketing, seeds marketing, value addition, leaves processing, transportation and distribution etc.
At scarcity periods (dry seasons) depending on location, ROI can be as high as 100 -300% but for this estimation, moderate case scenario of its profitability in scarcity period (starting from September) is shown below on per hectare basis:

The University of Uyo hereby invites candidates who made the University their 1st Choice in 2018/2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and had a minimum score of 180 to apply for Screening.
