ridsan4real:I have made significant progress. I would share with the house when fully chanced as I have been as busy as bees...no honey comb. Good looking out bro. cc Yildiz |
Toks07:Thank you. It really depends on the aspect of the medical line and the profile you want to present to them. That is the best way it works. For e.g, I could have recommended John Hopkins Uni but if you do not have the profile they want - or resources - they probably would not accept you. |
sunshineluv5:Hmmm. Contact ponpon. Be careful with centers and prices attached to them. You don't want to be ban and considered persona non-grata by ETS. |
olaolu39:What is the Q? |
Geedhey:Nothing is free in FreeTown. What schools have you looked at? What is your shortlist like? See if you can compare schools similar to Cleveland State. They might have funding like CAU did last fall for EE students. |
Allylic:Ask WalSpring etc Or just pay it with a MasterCard/visa since you want it done ASAP. Banks charge N367 to a dollar. |
temi4fash:Look for another recommender. The letter-headed paper gives the letter a more formal feel which can sway adcoms. If he is this protective of the company's letter head then he probably will not recommend you well. PS: some schools do not mind. So if this one does not mind, then still use him. |
tizentos:MasterCard via PayPal I meant to say. But ponpon's offer is way better. Endeavor to use it if available. |
HOYINDARMORLAR:Congrats on the AWA. TOEFL takes 10-14 days. |
tizentos:Then you'd have to use MasterCard. Regards. |
ponpon:They are all wonderful for TOEFL, SEVIS, Insurance etc but BY MAFIT is still better for GRE seeing that all these values are still higher than N8000. |
tizentos:You know today is a public holiday. Maybe they did not work today. I think the rates should be the same because they are regulated by CBN. But you can ask your bank to know the current rate (it flunctuates day by day) but on average it has been N367/$ |
ponpon:This also works if the people over there give you good rates to exchange naira for dollar. If they accept N360 for $1 for instance, that is better for TOEFL than using one's MasterCard because it amounts to N7200. But that same rate is still more expensive than BY MAFITs so it depends entirely on the rate. |
tizentos:They have numbers online - 4 of them. Call. They will most likely ask you to deposit N8k for each school you want and then send them a text stating the school's GRE code and dept you want to send it to, together with your ETS username and password. If you have a MasterCard, use it to pay for your TOEFL as it is cheaper that way. FirstBank charged me N7340 for my TOEFL whereas BY MAFIT would have charged me N8000. But GRE, BY MAFIT is cheaper because you pay the same N8000 whereas FirstBank would have charged me N9909. |
belragazzo:Your question is not dumb. The school will accept your scores etc but will not treat you as a priority deadline applicant. Some schools are more accomodating and will treat you as one if you have paid app fee and submitted the app (even if you are still waiting for GRE and TOEFL). However, some others will not and only deem you early if all the test scores and app fee have been submitted on or before that deadline. So contact your school's grad coord to know which one the school falls under. Yes, precisely some do but it is hard and competitive. I know Cleveland state sponsored some M.S fall 2017 EE applicants so there is that. I know UA Fayetteville sponsored 1 or 2 M.S applicants even on NL but not for EE. I know LSU and Wyoming funded some M.S candidates as well. I know the top schools barely fund for M.S apart from MIT and the other top 50s could, but it is uber-competitive. If you really want that M.S funding, you may need to set your gaze on the B-rated (between 70- 130 schools). |
denniece1:I think your choices are safe which is good, but I need you to add 1 ambitious school and 2 more moderate schools. You are a top-notch candidate. Do not fear. UToledo should be for M.S. You could get fully funded for their MSc program. I know getting direct PhDs is not easy these days but you just have to believe. I am not saying MIT, CALTECH, STANFORD. But some places like Santa Barbara, Delaware, GaTech, Wisconsin, Ohio State, North Carolina State, TAMU college station, UMD college park (top 50)etc. You can truly compete especially the last school on that list. Please, check if they have what you want (they should, nanotechnology is huge for our course) and see if you can chat with some faculty (Grad coord) to see what funding is for M.S and PhD. Apply. You would get in. |
kayceerilyn:I suggest you consider what I said above; 1. The 2 Canadian schools and atleast 2 US schools. 2. Investigate which will serve you better - financially, careerwise and so on. 3. Draw your own conclusions. 4. Study and practice hard for the GRE and if you're financially up-to-it, take the TOEFL as well on or before Oct 2018. Get your SOP ready and have your LORs and resumé on standby. 4b. Decide whether you want direct PhD apps or M.S apps (I recommend a mix of the 2) 5. September/October of 2018, apply to your schools. 6. Jan/Feb/Mar of 2019 you should have heard from most if not all of them. 7. Make plans to travel July/Aug 2019. To me, Canada is better for working-class people in Nigeria frustrated with their situation and seeking greener pastures. The chance of getting a PR that could aid schooling (thus paying lesser tuition than Internationals), job-getting and settling augurs well for such people. However, for young, vibrant, super-intelligent Nigerians who are ready to compete, US is a better destination for you. For one, for STEM courses, you have a chance to get an additional 36 months OPT (post grad work permit). Second, with a PhD you are not constrained to Academia alone. You can work in Fortune 500, 1000 companies especially in their R& D depts - many of which will not employ anyone - let alone an International student, who does not possess that PhD. Third, as a PhD you earn more than the other academic cadres because that degree is treated as a premium. Also, on average, Americans earn more than Canadians. Fourth, with Trump as POTUS and the increasing difficulties associated with getting companies to sponsor the H1B (work visa), PhDs appear to be the only group pampered, isolated and exempted from this madness. This should not detract from the fact that some master's degree holders can get all these things I tabled above. However, it is ostensible that PhDs benefit more from it overall. As you can see, I have given my personal opinion but I have tried to back it up with facts I garnered in the course of my research. You can do yours, see what you come up with, and make your own decisions based on it. Cheers. |
kayceerilyn:Albeit, I understand you quite well, I would advice you not to use hearsay to come to your conclusions. Do your investigations/due dilligence on your own then make a choice. There is a life after getting the PR for example. Cheers. |
Quoran:It is an algorithm that works randomly. My first GRE I had 3 Qs and in my 2nd, I had 3 Vs. I am an engineering grad. |
Karo168:Even this score can be put to great use. What schools are you looking at - that is the koko. What is the overall profile? 315 is a good score. Do not feel deflated at all. |
kayceerilyn:The best time to take the exam is before the fall season which begins around August. Since you are considering 2019 then all your preparations should be geared towards August of 2018. That way, you can be done with everything concerning your apps by October of that same year and by Jan-Mar, would have heard from all your prospective schools. Canada is a great country with very accomodating immigration policies however, it is not as funded as the US. I would advice you to consider the 2 Canadian schools you have above, and then atleast 2 more USA schools. For Canada, you must get a go-ahead from faculty before applying and making them reply you is quite difficult because they are very GPA-centric. You have the GPA they want though so no fears. As for USA, hearing from faculty is recommended but not absolutely necessary. Besides, with the time you have, if you practice well you would knock the GRE out of the park and that way (coupled with that GPA), you would more than likely get 2 solid offers in top schools that would fund you for the whole duration of your program. I see you are in the sciences and most science programs are well-funded, so maybe you should put all hands on deck to crush the GRE once and for all. You still have alot of time to find out schools that work for you and if you are not serving (even if you are but will be done before July) you could still get fully funded to the USA to travel this fall 2018. Some deadlines will extend to March for really competent people and your GPA gives me an indication that you foot the bill. |
denniece1:What other 3 did you send the score to? Don't have any doubts. Just make sure you know what you want to research on and then make your searches in-tandem with it. I have looked at many Q score cutoffs for top engineering programs in the US - especially for ChE and perhaps only 2 or 3 schools asked for 167 and above. Then your GPA on the 4.0 scale is 100% above 3.8/4.0. I would even say 3.9+/4.0. I know your other aspects will not be found wanting. The only reason that V score can't count for MIT, Stanford and CALTECH is because other applicants will submit that Q score or higher, as well as higher V scores. But as for the rest of the top 50 engineering programs, guy, you would get in. Quote me. Of course, I am no member of the adcoms and luck is a huge factor too. ![]() |
Karo168:Congrats. I wish you did better in the Q (not because this is bad - it isn't - but because I know you can do better owing to your Manhattan score of the same 160). All the same, huge congrats. |
denniece1:I will tell you what I told my Q170 friend; the V hardly matters. Only MIT, Stanford, CALTECH etc will care about it. I beg you, apply to GaTech for direct PhD. Try Austin, Boulder and then maybe another safe school. You would get in. With that GPA and Q score? Are you kidding me? Congrats man. BTW, GaTech have rolling admissions so no need to fear. I read about someone who applied Dec 9th and was bounced Dec 16th or so. Something funny like that. He does/did not have your profile though. |
adelawry:Your profile is not terrible. It is not fantastic either. There is no point dissuading anyone as it is case by case. But I think Purdue is a reach for your profile. UMass is it Lowell or Amherst? The latter will be a reach for your profile. You can try Lafayette for a direct PhD and more schools in the B- C+ C categories for that PhD. Package your app well as your Q score and GPA are good and just sell yourself very well. Use msinus.com to get the schools in the grades I mentioned afore. PhDs are competitive because of the funding but if your profile is really strong for the school you are applying to, you stand a chance. |
BiggyB242:Funding simply implies; We really want you to come to our school to study and contribute. We see value in you and feel you would add something special to our program and school by extension. We don't want to lose you to another school. Please, pick us. Now the question you should ask yourself is, what factors can make any school come to that conclusion about someone? That is what I am insinuating. ![]() |
arTiculaTe01:TOEFL is compulsory for some schools but not for others. The merits of sitting for it include the chance of getting a TA. Schools like to use the speaking score to guage if someone might be a good TA (amongst other things ofcourse). An overall strong TOEFL score can make up for a weak V score in the GRE as well. In summary, TOEFL bolsters the application and could tip the scale when both candidates are neck and neck. |
LagosismyHome:Haba, when Walspring's offer was on I was directing everyone I knew to him. Now that ponpon has his thing going, never a day passes by without me recommending him or the company in question. I feel bad for Nigerians who pay N75k+ for an exam that they could have paid N50k or less for that is why I do it. I have no horse in this race. |
femi312:You're making your own argument and changing the terms of your own argument. I was unequivocal in not excusing their unprofessionalism - which makes your point moot if not unnecessary. There are dire situations where a decision must be made. If I wait to call my boss before making that decision he would score me low for showing zero initiative. When someone wants to make an argument you should present an alternate view to balance it. This is why many get below 4 in the analytical writing of their GRE. If 50,000 people have been registered by the company, and 5 people disagree with their service, guess what? The 5 people's opinion will trump the remaining 49,995. That is the argument you are making without noticing. In the real world of logical-thinking men the tail does not wag the dog. In all of this, saying his timing is his personal problem will only impress unprepared people like the OP who would not know what proactiveness is even if it combed their hairs. I would criticise the company for their unprofessionalism and still pan the OP for his own role in the whole debacle. You can pick his side and rest your case. I like where I am standing; on a balanced platform. |
femi312:Gokuu's reply is enough but let me just add. What if wearing a shirt is what would save your life and you were only being finicky by specifying the color you wanted? What if, the blue shirt was completely sold on the day you asked for it and if they did not buy the red shirt on that very day, it too, would have completely sold out? I have no personal issues with the guy whatsoever. I know he is a petulant old man with the temperament of a child. |

femi312:On the contrary, my aim is spot-on. He is crying foul when he has not been tackled. Of course, I am not excusing their unprofessionalism. But randomly checking the ETS site for Nigeria/Lagos will show which dates are filled and which are still available. Someone will not wake up any day and select any arbitrary date and expect it to be waiting. Like I said, those dates fill up pretty fast. I am actually panning his unpreparedness masked with feigned anger as well as the misinformation. Maybe he should have been left to pay 100k for the bad score which the Ivy school he was planning to apply to would have still tossed aside. |
