platypelloid: Scholastica or what have you? i guess you are one of the staffs at Mafits and may be you are the one that misinformed me 9 days ago. How can you be talking like this may be you should help me call them or e mail them?having travelled 4 times from a far state based on this issue. The earlier part of your comment is deemed being AWOL! Or did i pay through your pocket?
Anyway Thanks . I am not a member of staff of BY MAFIT nor am I affiliated with them. I don't even know what their office building looks like. Your case is particularly appalling because you are considering a PhD but you are showing a glaring lack of research on your part. The numbers to call are on their website. Since you are dealing with unprofessionals why don't you be calm in explaining your situation to them? All this hot air you are blowing will only damage the atmosphere around you. And your GRE getting to your prospective school maximum of 4 days late is not the end of the world. If you want to prove you are cut out for this PhD, then email the Grad coord of your dept to prepare them and enquire if it could hurt your admission chances. The staggering fact is, submitting a bad GRE before the closing date will still hurt your chances - and I kid you not, you were ebbing towards that. Would you rather submit 270+ on the 10th or 315+ on the 14th? Your guess is as good as mine. And BTW, getting accepted into PhD programs especially in Ivy League schools are almost GRE-dependent. This is because they have filters in-place that will most likely thrash and shred any app with a comparatively low GRE score. So this extra days given to you might just be a blessing in disguise. The person who forewarned you, forearmed you. You should be grateful not waffling. Enough said. |

platypelloid: Respect all, i registered for GRE at BY Mafit Educational Centre at ikeja for a date in december, and they went to book me 6 days after the day i filled in wthout my consent!and the present date will be too late for my purpose, presently iam furious and i have called them and they told me the date i chose which is dec 30 is filled having registered with BY mafit for close to 2 weeks now!,that they have to reschedule me for the next date WITHOUT MY CONSENT untill i seee the registration e mail from ETS.
Im so bitter about this and my experience with their staff has been unprofessional, and i use this opportunity to tell the general public to beware of this agency! House please kindly advice me on what to do !!!! You are bitter because you are misinformed and you are about to misinform others. It was on the 20th of this month that you had no clue what BY MAFIT was only to claim today, 9 days after, that you registered with them for 2 weeks. Secondly, registering with them entails more than just filling a form. It is after you have paid that you are deemed fully registered and then they can book a date for you. Third, by August, GRE dates in Lagos had filled such that it was hard getting dates for November at JKK. I know someone who got Dec 1 from as far back as August. GRE dates fill pretty quickly in Lagos. I am totally unsurprised that you could not get any dates in Dec except you are outside Lagos. Instead of talking through the red mist (which you are currently doing), call them ASAP and table your complaints. Sending emails may not be as effective - you are dealing with Nigerians. And don't be too inflexible about that extended date they gave you. You were still asking if Kaplan would suffice for a robust GRE prep. Those of us who know what the GRE entails, know that you were going to Uber-bang the exams with Kaplan and the short practice time. So see this delay as a blessing. PS: any scathing half-assed reply will be ignored. |

abimbolar: Hi bro, quick question. Is there any school you're aware of that's funding compt sci / info tech/ cybersecurity just like @bolded
My GRE is in a couple of days, I will be sending my test scores to ETSU, USF, UTSA need one or more schools that has high funding probability for the program despite its competitiveness.
Thanks Hmmm. UIUC and Carnegie Mellon are highly funded for CS although mega-competitive. But you could try Cleveland State also. |

AlphaPen: Perhaps, you were oblivious about it sir. Your offence was a classical suarez, subtle yet lethal. I had to play Vidic, considering the research time I put in it. Lol Anyways, I now know that acing the GRE is a very major determinant here. I just needed to know if a low GP could get funding. Thanks for that.
And yes, Penn state and university of Arkansas have GAs for MSc students.
Going by your assertion that most schools rarely fund MSc, do you think a great GRE score can get me a Phd? Best wishes. I think so. But vying for the M.S in Arkansas is also not out of the way. It is school by school really. LOL @ subtle yet lethal. |

Yildiz: Morning all. Please I have a question, do I need to send my official test score before application deadline for the application to be considered complete? Depends on the school. So you may need to check the requirements of your school. Some schools will evaluate the application with just uploaded versions but others will insist they must receive the official ones to deem your app complete. |
Education › Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 10:42pm On Nov 27, 2017 |
AlphaPen: Thank you for the reply. I clearly get the underlying messages as well.
However, I have actually researched about the schools in the US that offer the course. I have Utah state university, Universityof Arkansas, Texas tech and a host of them. I got them pruned to just Penn state and Arkansas because they were the only ones that stated funding through graduate assistanship. I didn't ask to be fed, but to be led. I am a gentleman in this sphere, that was why I sought guidance from experienced ilks like you.
Best wishes. No need to be defensive man, your questions were answered; Your GPA can work with the whole profile in tact. Sure, Penn State is not MIT so a wonderful GRE can make up for perceived deficiencies. Someone with a 2nd class lower got into UPenn fully-funded with a 328. And UPenn is bigger than Penn State. As per GA, are you talking about M.S or PhD? Most schools rarely fund for M.S programs but for PhDs, sure. So it depends. Penn State, will be tagged as ambitious until your GRE and other aspects of your profile are formed. Iowa is big on Agriculture and what not so you can check the schools over there. Regards. |

AlphaPen: Hello folks. I appreciate everyone on this forum. Y'all are doing wonderful. Please, I need y'all to help me on this.
Profile Undergrad: 3.72/5.0. (sighs) GRE: Dec/Jan TOEFL: Jan Course: Agricultural Extension and Communication Technology.
I intend to apply to Penn state University for the fall 2018 for an MSc in Agriculture and Extension education.
Now, to my enquiries.
Can I possibly get full funding with that CGPA?
Which other schools(full funding) are safe for me to apply to? ( I am open to other courses related to Agriculture and rural development)
Many thanks. Your question should be; can I get fully funded with that PROFILE? Your GPA is just one aspect. So work on the others. Say you get 340 in the GRE, Ofcourse it would be possible to get into Penn State fully funded. As for other schools, you have enough time from now to January to use Google, check out schools and depts. Requirements etc. It is when you are done with that aspect that people can help you by telling you which may be too ambitious, safe, a deadend and the possible GRE cutoffs (if not clearly delineated on the website of the school). It is research you want to do in the US. Start showing you would be good at it in future. |

Very very very possible. Just do very well in the Q section of the GRE. Consider El Paso as a safe school. Word is, they funded every maths student that was accepted. |

arTiculaTe01,
I believe I recognize the original post but the moniker not so much. I could barely make out your post perfectly but I think I understand what you are driving at.
Your GPA is your asset, coupled with your now MBA degree, and 5+ years of work experience. Don't downplay these aspects as the GRE - as we have said ad nauseam - is just one aspect.
Personally, you are selling yourself a bit short. You should combine Direct PhD apps with some MS apps. You really could get funded. I wonder why you are not as optimistic for yourself as I am for you.
And yes, Texas is good and reasonably cheap to live in but I would advice you to look for departments in various schools that have your program/interest, across the US. Don't settle for just Texas.
Have you looked at Texas Tech in Lubbock? Anyways, UTD is also a good school. And if you are keen on your Telecommunications research area, restrict your search to it. See, the thing about Computer Science is, in the US, it is MIGHTY competitive.
Look at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well and maybe Arlington. University of North Texas too. Since you are big on Texas.
I know you alluded to TAMUK in your post but they won't fully fund you perhaps except for a direct PhD. I expect you to have made enquiries by now about it. I know for certain that for M.S, perhaps you would get some partial funding in form of instate tuitions but if you need strong financial aid, the direct PhD might be your best bet.
Good luck. |

adetola007: Wow, congrats bro. So happy for you. For the petroleum engineering, that's the only admission I have in UK, just applied to Imperial just to fulfill righteousness, never expected ptdf will be transparent and the list came out too late to start looking for admission Imperial is tight, my issue is I wish you were in their Chemical Engineering program. I understand your predicament though, I was just stubborn in my heart knowing I won't compromise and then a previous scholar assured me that they would still bend and let us have the "countries" we desire. I have learnt alot about the scholarship body having been to their Towers recently and I just realized they played some of you guys who went early - unnecessarily and unfairly I must add. Let me not derail the thread. I am sure you would still aim for that PhD in the US, and I bet you that Imperial degree on your resumé will help even if it may be unrelated to your PhD options (I presume you would still shoot for your first love - Chemical Engineering). Cheers. |

Perhaps, you are just making some silly mistakes and falling for some of the traps. You are in good hands. You will do well. Very well in fact. I believe you could clock 320+ on the main day because your Q score in Manhattan means you would do better with the actual test. As for the V, your 2nd PowerPrep is very encouraging. What other tips are you looking for? I think you should also take the tests on the ETS guide in a proper simulated manner as they would most likely tell where you exactly are - preparation wise. |

LazyFolk: Haha, Lazyfolk is only entailed when something disinterests me. Quite the contrary is the case now. Course to apply for Geographic information system or Geography related courses... Schools checked; All schools in Texas, Syracuse, Illinois , Alberta, Montana, Etsu, Cleveland and about 10 others.. When i mean checked, i mean i wrote and got a reply from almost all.. Now, 90% of texas schools have my intended study course, My Koko is now to get funded. Is it prior , with, or after admission ? Does anyone on here know about uni Illinois urbana? Or any other uni, that i can work on? Please you've gotta chip in, as you can see Lazyfolk is a paradox. Urbana Champaign is a top school. Consider Q163-165, GPA 4.2/5 (In Nigeria) as starting points to be competitive. The general area around it in Ilinois, Chicago is even expensive to live in so that is for that. You should definitely look at B, B- and C+ schools as they could fund you for your program since your GRE will ably compete in such schools. I know your GPA in the 4 point scale will just land at 3.0/4.0 and in most schools in the US, that is sufficient for an MSc or direct PhD (if you really want to be sure you would get funded). Here is a list of schools that your GRE is better than their averages. You can continue your correspondences with their grad advisors if they have what you are looking for; UNewMexico, Dayton, Arlington, Witchita State, UT Health Science Centre, Wayne State, Texas San Antonio, Lamar Uni, Morgan State, Prairie View A&M. |

LazyFolk: Thank You for the reply, id like to expound on my previous write-up. Accoding to what i hear from school, Unilag is trying to make a policy where students can only get their transcripts after graduation (in this case 21-23rd February 2018) As for study motives , i am leaning towards Geography or Geographic information system, Right now, schools considered are university of Illinois UT el paso University of British Columbia Syracuse university... My Main problem is "finding funding", although i have spoken to their graduate advisors , they have not been forthcoming .. So if there are other schools that can be listed here, id be grateful .. id rather hear from those with experience UNILAG is presenting a real conundrum now. This is because most schools will not act on the uploaded copy of a transcript if it is not the "official" one with the associated stamps and signatures that it should contain. Some schools may allow you upload a student's copy but they are usually few and far between. Then, as for funding, nobody can truly predict it but gettting funded by UIUC for your master's is almost impossible. They also do not accept direct PhDs. UBC in Canada maybe too ambitious for your profile (your GPA in this case). Syracuse is a private University in NY whose tuition and fees are pretty prohibitive. You could get funded but that is usually at PhD levels and getting direct PhD admits into such a school is competitive. In all your school choices on this list, El Paso seems to be the only realistic one but then I am not God. I would give a list of schools to consider in my response to your next post. |

HOYINDARMORLAR: Thank you very much. I will check out the schools you mentioned and add them to my list. I honestly thought my Q score would be too low for any school, but I'll try as you've said. I am not really concerned with funding, my sponsor-dad- is willing to pay. (yes, the $65000 for even UMD), though funding wouldn't hurt too.
Thanks for the uplifting comments.
I plan to write TOEFL next month. Do you think 2 weeks preparation will be okay? What materials can I use to prepare? Thanks as you oblige. If you can pay, you would most likely get in to atleast 2 of your schools. Your Q-score is not as bad as you think. It just depends on the schools you are considering. I guess UMD is your ambitious school and that is splendid. Congrats ahead. 2 weeks might even be too much because I got bored after studying for a week. I know I can say that to you with a straight face because your V score in GRE (even from your practice tests) were very good. So just work on the listening & speaking parts. I wager you could get the full 30 in the reading (but please don't trivialize it). I am also pretty certain your writing won't have issues so 1 week will be sufficient or atmost 2 weeks. Not a day more. As for study materials, people used NOTEFULL (and it is well celebrated and widely recommended) but I did not. I looked at the TOEFL official guide and cracking the TOEFL - Both materials I got from that selfstudy link on page1. Regards. |

HOYINDARMORLAR: Hello house. In keeping with tradition, Here's my:
GRE EXPERIENCE
I wrote my Gre at JKK yesterday by 10:00 AM. had a not so great score.
I started serious prep two months ago. The first thing i did was take a powerprep test as my seniors here advised. The powerprep score was Q 140 V 161
I reported the score here and i was given advice on how to improve my quant score. Here is how i prepared:
AWA I read a few essays on essay judge 2 days to test and read the commentaries as well. I also made sure i answered all AWA questions in all the practice tests i took.
VERBAL I did not have enough time to prepare for this, since my quant score was the most important. I basically ignored this but i also answered the questions for all practice tests.
Quantitative
This was basically all I did for two whole months. After the first powerprep, the first thing i did was Study the official guide and answered all practice questions. I then moved on to the Manhattan 8 series where I only used the first 6 books. I took the manhattan practice test after these and my score was still 142. I felt I was not getting anywhere so i came back here looking for a tutor but the gurus here advised me against that and suggested more study materials. So, I moved on to watching and actively practising with all the quant videos and questions on the magoosh premium account. I would watch the videos, pause and practice and answer questions where necessary. I also solved the questions, and made sure to watch the explanation video and understand the workings on any question I missed. About 2 weeks to test, I moved on to the Manhattan 5lb book. I was on leave at the time so I was able to fully focus on studying. I skipped all the verbal questions on the 5lb and moved right to quant. I was able to solve all questions and study all the answers, especially the ones I missed.
On the day before the exam, i didn't do anything GRE related. I also made sure i got a good night's sleep so i woke up refreshed on exam day.
I got to jkk a few minutes to 10, did all the necessary things and was assigned a computer. I got my issue essay prompt and almost peed my pants, i was that scared. I sha did something sha and moved on. The argument essay was easy, was able to answer that effectively. I had VQVQV which was what i was praying for. The first verbal was a breeze, I couldn't answer 4 questions in the first quant before my time elapsed. I also didn't leave my seat during the 10 minutes break, just sat there and cried because I knew i had already failed quant. Second verbal was tougher but i pulled through, 2nd quant confirmed my suspicion that i bleeped up on the first. third verbal had like 10 RCs which is the question type i hated most. I got my score:
Q 150 V 161 AW- still expecting
I didn't report my scores to any school because i felt it wasn't good enough. My profile:
CGPA - 3.03/5 GRE - 311(Q150 V161) TOEFL - not yet
I want to apply for Masters in Finance. Would you recommend that i rewrite GRE or are there programs that can accept such poor quant score?
My initial shortlisted schools were:
UMD University of Oregon Georgia State University Hult international Business school
No vex say my post long o. Congratulations and thanks for this detailed account of your experience. Personally, your composite score is very good and you improved tremendously from your first tentative test Q-score to your main day test score. 10 marks is huge in the GRE. I don't see anything wrong with your schools and I believe you could get in based on how you package yourself. The only reason you would need to write another GRE is if you are aiming for way higher schools or if you got rejected now after trying. The real question is, are you aiming solely for funding? If no. Then I think you stand a very good chance. You can check TAMUK and Western Michigan Uni at Kalamazoo as well since your Q score is within their range. I believe anyone can get funded but not at the same time; while some might get that GA/TA/RA before leaving for the US, others might get it after a semester. I pray you smile come fall 2018. Good luck. |

denniece1: Thank you. I know LSU will be in January. They fund MS for ChE but it is competitive as a result. Toledo too can be a safe school for you. Personally, I would advice you to look more into direct PhDs. So Delaware, Boulders will also be good schools for that. Look at TUFTs too. They have been funding people left right and centre with your type or GPA. Aim for toppest Q scores. It could open you up to more schools like North Carolina State in Raleigh and Ohio state. |

triplemtrk: Good day scholars, I just did my GRE exam last week, and it was, indeed, a very disappointing result (Q-150 and V-148 AWA-Pending).
Though my preparation was for a very short period-- less than 3 weeks combined with business (so as to raise funds).
Is there still any possibility of getting a direct PhD in US or Canada?
Here is my profile: CGPA: 4.51/5 IELTS: 7.0 Publications: 1 Course: Agricultural and Environmental Engineering
Kindly help with suggestions please Ofcourse, there is a possibility with that GPA of yours. Especially in the USA. Now Google schools that have this course and check for faculty that are into your preferred research area. Check the admission requirements for your schools and course. Some good schools do not have much regard for the GRE for certain courses. Find out if yours qualifies in your prospective schools. I believe your GPA, publication and IELTS are good enough so in a situation where the GRE is not highly regarded or better still, where even your scores qualify you, find out if they fund their PhDs (they most likely will). Then apply. Try to look at Auburn and University of Iowa as well. |

So it is not the "funded" ones you should be looking for, but where you can work on the research interests you have and also where your profile can be super competitive. The funding is almost an unplanned consequence of that - for a PhD that is. |

LazyFolk: hello People, good day to y'all ... Although I've been reading this thread and following religiously for a while, i just registered for it today (I'm still unfamiliar with its usage) I have a few questions to ask, better still i need your input even if my questions seem banal. I just graduated from unilag about 2 weeks ago and wrote the gre last week.. My scores were not so good, as i wasn't really entrenched in my studies as i was still working on my project. I got a 315 , Quant 158 Verbal 157 (i plan on writing another exam in january, i didn't really read for this one i guess scores were fortuitous ) My questions are: 1. I graduated with a Gpa of 2.96 (terrible i know), but what are my chances, if any, of getting a scholarship.. 2. I applied to random schools on that day, because the test was paid for by my Sister a week before without my prior knowledge and I didn't really Check it proper , what schools can i now apply to? 3. As I have no chance of getting my transcript till early February , do i still have a chance of applying for 2018 4. Please I'm in need of a mentor if possible to put me through, i may sound Ingenious, but please help my cause.. Waiting on your auspicious responses, God bless Congrats on your GRE. Your chance of getting anything you want boils down to applying to the right schools. But to even do that, you need to know what you want to study and I cannot glean that from your post. When you say you have no chance of getting your transcript by february what do you mean? You need a scanned copy for most of your applications already as most schools will not accept a students copy. Anyways, these sort of things are usually case by case. |

Had my GRE after less than a month serious prep...thanks to hints on this thread Q 154 V 152 AWA 3.5 ( funniest thing is I prepared for AWA two days before the exam)
In short, my advice if you intend to write GRE...Take time to practice, practice and practice (say two months). Gonna rewrite later, buh definitely not now.
My Profile
Course : Construction Management CGPA : 3.89/4.00 ( WES) Publications: 5
I'm applying to University of Florida( PhD Construction mgt), but the acceptance rate is 38%...Nonetheless, I'm optimistic.
Min Qualifictn. for the Department Verbal- 146 Quantitative- 148 TOEFL- 80
Average is V = 150 Q = 159 CGPA = 3.6
I have a supervisor there already who is very willing to supervise my thesis....
I plan to write TOEFL by December hopefully...
Kindly help out with schools suggestion. You should be optimistic; you have the GPA UofF looks out for and that you have a potential thesis advisor ought to be a good sign. I won't rest on my laurels if I am you. You can Google "construction management grad school rankings" for example. Then look through the whole list for which school has your area of specialization or interest. After that, you can scour their site for possible average GRE scores (as I am sure your GPA will qualify just about anywhere). Take note that average GRE score does not mean they never accepted anyone with scores less than that. So a school that might have 161Q as average could still accept you same as a score of 162-164. The ones above this, not so much. It is always better to look for schools based on your interest first, before profile, as you could find advisors in your proposed schools that may not care about your stats so much and just be really keen on working with you. If you have any issues finding out the average Q score of the shortlisted schools, come back here to ask me and I can help you with that. |

harthy007: @Scholastica16
I commend you for the selfless help you are offering here.
Please could you suggest school that would fund me for an Ms program in ECE( computer systems &networks specialization)?
Here is my profile Gre : Q161/V150/ 3 Toefl: 100+ (expecting result in 12days) GPA: 4.67/5 2yrs experience No paper
Thanks Georgia State University Uni of Texas Dallas North Eastern UTArlington Your GPA is very competitive but still there is no guarantee. You should really be looking out for schools that have your area of interest first and foremost then you can prune your list down to what seems realistic considering your profile. |
