Travel / Norway Cruise Ship Heads To Port After Passenger Airlifts by schoolnascam: 3:08pm On Mar 24, 2019
A cruise ship that got into trouble off the Norwegian coast is heading to port after the dramatic rescue of hundreds of its passengers.

The Viking Sky lost power on Saturday and sent out a distress signal after it began drifting towards land.

Rescuers airlifted almost 500 of the 1,373 mostly elderly passengers from the ship in bad weather.

The vessel's engines have been restarted and it is heading towards the port of Molde.

Evacuations have been halted for now but rescuers said they could resume if the captain deems it necessary.

How did the drama unfold?
The Viking Sky suffered engine failure on Saturday afternoon while en route to Stavanger from Tromso in a notoriously treacherous stretch of waters.

Fisherman Jan Erik Fiskerstrand, whose boat was one of the first to come to help Viking Sky, told Aftenposten newspaper, "it was just minutes before this could have gone really wrong".

The ship could have hit the rocks "if they had not started the engine and fastened the anchor" he added.

Five helicopters and several rescue ships were called in but poor weather meant the lifeboats were forced to turn back.

The authorities decided to launch airlifts rather than leave people on board and hundreds were hoisted to safety.

Among those rescued 20 people suffered injuries. Most of those travelling are said to be British or US citizens.

The cruise's operator said 436 guests and 458 crew remain on board.

What was it like on board?
Derek Browne, from southern England, who was travelling with his wife Esther said the ship had been "rolling and rolling" all night on Friday before losing engine power on Saturday.

He said being airlifted to safety was "quite a frightening experience".

Britons tell of 'frightening' rescue
George Davis, from Manchester, said he and his wife Barbara waited 10 hours to be rescued.

"It was a very scary event", he said, adding: "Locals tell us they were amazed that we sailed into the teeth of a storm they knew was coming".

Footage on board shows the vessel heaving violently, sending furniture sliding across the floor. Passengers wearing life jackets are seen waiting to be rescued.

The former South African cricketer Graeme Smith said his parents had been among those airlifted to safety.

One of those still on board, Lara from Birmingham in the UK, said "the crew were magnificent and have kept the remaining passengers safe, warm and fed".

The Viking Sky is a Viking Ocean Cruises ship, which had its maiden voyage in 2017.

The company said "throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and our crew".

Crime / "Most Wanted" Murder Suspect Arrested by schoolnascam: 2:34pm On Mar 24, 2019
One of Britain's most wanted fugitives has been arrested in Romania after years on the run.

Shane O'Brien, 31, is alleged to have murdered Josh Hanson in an unprovoked knife attack in London in 2015.

He fled after the stabbing at the RE bar in Hillingdon and a red alert was issued by Interpol for information leading to his arrest and prosecution.

The Met Police said extradition proceedings will begin to bring him to the UK.

Can a fugitive remain on the run forever?

Mr O'Brien, who is on both the Europol and the National Crime Agency most wanted lists, left the UK on a private flight in the wake of the attack.

He was arrested in Prague in February 2017 while using fake Italian documents and released before officers discovered his true identity.

Mr Hanson, from Kingsbury in north-west London, was pronounced dead at the scene on 11 October 2015.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as haemorrhage, inhalation of blood and an incised wound to the neck.

The Josh Hanson Trust, a charity set up in the wake of his death, wrote on Twitter: "Today, on the 23rd of March 2019 and after three and a half years of waiting, today is Josh's day."

Ian Cruxton, the NCA's head of international operations, said: "O'Brien has spent several years looking over his shoulder as he has been at the centre of an extensive operation to track him down.

"I'm delighted that the pressure brought to bear by this has finally resulted in him being captured."

Politics / President Buhari Signs Bill Stopping NYSC From Posting Engineering Graduates To by schoolnascam: 2:39pm On Mar 23, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog

The Engineers (Registration etc) Amendment Bill, 2019, which among others, bars NYSC from henceforth, posting graduates of engineering to secondary schools to teach, was today, signed into law by Pres. Buhari.

The bill which has now become the Act of the National Assembly seeks to promote technological development in Nigeria by ensuring that trained engineers are well positioned to deploy the knowledge acquired in their various fields to the development of technology in the country.

Senator Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, said as against the tradition of posting a large number of engineering graduates to schools by NYSC, youth corps members who are graduates of engineering must henceforth be posted only to engineering firms and other institutions that are relevant to their professional fields.

Aside prohibiting such firms from rejecting engineering graduates posted to them, the Act mandates NYSC to immediately communicate the name of any institution where an engineering graduate is posted to, for his/her primary assignment, to the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Furthermore, the Act prohibits any foreign engineering firm from operating in Nigeria without being duly registered in the country by COREN. It also mandates such a foreign firm to ensure the introduction of local content into the operations of the company by employing Nigerian engineers.

Enang also said the new Act grants “compulsory attestation to all expatriate quota for engineering practitioners, including turnkey project, that there are no qualified and competent Nigerians for the job in question at the time of application and that granting of the expatriate quota shall be contingent on training of such number of persons as may be required for the execution of the job, and; ensuring that, before being allowed to practice in Nigeria, such foreign engineering practitioners granted work permit, register with the council and obtain such licenses as may be required from time to time; investigating engineering failures.’’

Celebrities / My Only Regret Is That I Wasn't Allowed To Marry The Man Of My Choice - Mama G by schoolnascam: 12:25pm On Mar 23, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwor in a new interview has opened up on the only regret she has in life, how her kids prevented her from getting married again and the role her mum played in her first marriage.

See excerpts from her interview with Punchng below...

Since the death of your husband, have you ever considered remarrying?

Yes. There was a time I wanted to remarry but my children said no. They are all grown now. They said if they were young, they wouldn’t have objected. Now that they are grown, they say they will be my husband and they have been trying. The only thing they don’t do is go to bed with me (laughs). They said that their friends would laugh at them that their mother abandoned them, but I didn’t see it that way. It really brought problems. I wanted to remarry but my sister and other relations came and said that I should concede to them and I accepted but with the condition that they would also listen to me anytime I tell them to stop being friends with any of their friends that I don’t like and they agreed. So we have been managing one another.

Do you have any regrets in life?

The only regret I have in life is that I wasn’t allowed to marry the man of my choice. That is it but I was able to cope. I had suitors, I was going to choose one among them but my parents said that I would marry their choice. If they had allowed me, I would have loved to make my choice.

You got married early in life following your parents’ bidding. Was it that you were betrothed to him?

No, I wasn’t betrothed to him, but my mother was a kind of woman that always liked to punish any child that misbehaved publicly. You know all those Christian mothers that would be in the disciplinary section to punish children. So, she didn’t want her child to come out of secondary school and not get married because she was afraid you could bring her to where she had been punishing people. So she insisted I must get married. I said okay but I had a suitor. But she said no. I didn’t know what to do because I had put all my eggs in one basket; he was in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I was waiting to go to school so that I would marry him but my mother wouldn’t wait. So I had to obey her. There was a big fight but in our days, you would not be the one to say I will marry this person; it was your parents that would have the final say in your marriage, so I had to give up.

How would you describe your childhood? Were you stubborn?

I was not stubborn and I was not quiet. It was all play, play, play. But I was loved by so many people around.

At the time you ventured into acting, what were your parents’ reactions?

Only my father was still around and he was excited seeing me in a movie. Like my husband too, he would say (to our children), come and play your mother’s film for us to watch. They enjoy my movies. My immediate younger brother, who is in the US, will say that I have found my talent and that is why it has swallowed me.

If you were not an actor, what else would you have been in life?

I would be cooking. I still cook till today.

Crime / Two Sisters Aged 3 And 5 Raped On Same Day In Imo (Photos) by schoolnascam: 10:38am On Mar 23, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

Two sisters aged 3 and 5 years old are currently receiving medical attention in a hospital in Imo state after they were allegedly raped on the same day by a 17 year old neighbor in their compound along Oji roundabout on Wednesday March 20th.

Activist and leader of the Behind Bar Initiative Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared the story online, said there was deep penetration as the 3yrs old can't walk properly. According to him, the family members of the suspected rapist paid the victims parents N15,000 for hospital treatment and another N2000 for feeding. The victims' parents accepted the money as settlement.

Gwamnishu in a chat with LIB said

''The mother of the victims usually fries Akara while the father is a bricklayer. The mother of the girls usually drops them at her neighbor's house. It was the neighbor's 17 year old son that had sex with the girls. The three year old was badly affected as she couldn't walk properly after the sexual intercourse''.

He said the matter had not been reported to the police by the victims' family. Gwamnishu said his team will make a formal report to the police today while the victims will be transferred to the Federal Medical Center in Owerri for proper medical center.
