Business / 10 Biggest And Busiest Markets In Nigeria That Are Saving The Nation From Hunger by schoolnascam: 10:41am On Jul 06, 2019
Markets in Nigeria are generally known to be very busy with all the hustling and bustling, people moving helter skelter, and those buying and selling. The markets are always congested which is why some dislike going to the market. During the just concluded Eid celebration, markets all over the country were packed with traders and buyers and the usually busy ones were even busier. In fact, the markets had become very busy and congested days before the Eid celebration. Products from food items to clothings were on high demand and prices of goods increased just as expected.

Despite the fact that all Nigerian markets are known to be always busy and rowdy, there are some of them that are extremely busy all year round, with or without special festivals or celebrations, and they are actually really big and popular markets. We would be looking at 10 of such markets in this piece. Here’s a list of them below:

1. Onitsha Market, Anambra

The Onitsha market, also known as Onitsha Main Market, is the largest market in Africa based on its geographical size and volume of goods, and one of the busiest in Nigeria. It is based in the city of Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State.

Despite being located in the south eastern part of Nigeria, the Onitsha market is populated by traders and merchants from not only Nigeria, but all over the world. The Onitsha Main market is often regarded as the headquarters for importers in Eastern Nigeria. These importers are known to bring in about 6 – 20 consignments of 40 tonnes of goods annually. Imported products include jewelry, clothing, household, industrial and office items.

2. Idumota, Lagos

Idumota market is one of the oldest markets in Nigeria, and one of the busiest. The market is located on Lagos Island, and largely known to be the centre for Nollywood home videos, as well as often pirated Hollywood and Bollywood movies.

Apart from home videos, other products such as clothing, textiles, jewelries, shoes, bags and general home appliances are sold there. It is one of the most famous and busiest markets during holidays such as Christmas and Eid celebrations.

3. Kurmi Market, Kano

Kurmi Market is one of the largest and busiest markets in Nigeria, located in Kano state. The market was founded by King Mohammed Rumfa of Kano in 1463, making it one of the oldest markets in Nigeria.

The market is most popular for the sale of products such as sculptures, dyed fabrics, carved stones and woods, beaded jewelry, and woven materials. More so, also available are food items and fresh groceries as well as live cattle from the market.

4. Ariaria International Market, Aba

Fondly called the ‘China of Africa’, Ariaria International Market is one of the largest markets in West Africa. The market was established in the 1970s after a fire incident occurred in Ekeoha Market in Aba.

Ariaria International Market is popularly known for imitations of foreign products, ranging from clothes to shoes, belts, and other items, generally known as ‘Aba made’.

5. Alaba International Market, Lagos

Alaba International market is the hub for assorted electronic products imported directly from the manufacturers. These products include televisions, sound systems, musical instruments, and many other electronics and home appliances. The market is the biggest centre for pirated Hollywood, Nollywood, and Bollywood movies. When visiting the Alaba market, watch out for swindlers who are always looking to play a fast one on unsuspecting visitors.

6. Computer Village, Lagos

Computer Village is the largest ICT accessories market in Africa. There is virtually no sort of computer and electronic accessory that can’t be found in computer village. Also, there is probably no computer problem that cannot be handled or fixed in the market.

The daily business transactions and popularity has attracted new investors and ICT dealers across Africa thereby expanding the market size and population with profound effects on Lagos State economy.

7. Jos Main Market, Jos

Jos Terminal Market (Terminus) as it is otherwise known, is both a trading and tourist centre in Plateau state. It is said to be the largest indoor market in West Africa with its ultra-modern architectural design. Its design makes it easy for customers to get almost anything they want without much hassle. Produce of all kinds such as food items, household tools, etc can be purchased in the market.

8. Zaki Biam yam market, Benue

As the name implies, yam is the only item sold in this market, and this makes it the biggest yam market in West Africa. it is Located in Sankera axis of Ukum local government area in Benue State. With over 1.5 million tubers of yam produced in Benue, the market is the major source of yams for Nigerians.

9. Gbagi Market, Ibadan

The Gbagi market is known to be the textile hub in Ibadan just like Balogun or Idumota markets in Lagos. New fabrics and other clothing materials are offloaded straight from textile factories into the market everyday. All sorts of textile materials, from the lowest to the highest, could be found and several millions of naira are spent in this market on a daily basis.

10. Balogun Market, Lagos

Balogun market is one of the largest markets in Nigeria, and West Africa as a whole. The market is spread across so many streets on Lagos Island. The market is also the best place to get great bargains on different fabrics such as laces, ankara, casual and office wears, shoes, bags etc.

A 27-year-old cleaner working in Dubai has been rewarded after returning a bag filled with 15kg gold bars worth over N249 million. The trustworthy chap took the bag without tampering with anything and took it to the authorities.

Taher Ali Maqbool first thought the heavy daffle bag was carrying tools belonging to a mechanic as the contents looked like metallic objects.

The bag was left unattended at the corner of a car park and when Taher started cleaning the floor, he became curious and tried to see what it was.

When The Pakistani cleaner lifted it, the bag was pretty heavy so he wondered what could have been inside.

"It was very heavy. I thought at first that the bag belonged to a mechanic because it looked like a box that contained tools," he told Gulf News.

He then kept it safely hoping that the owner would soon show up and claim it. He said: “But it was unusually heavy. We kept it aside because we thought someone would come to collect it,” he added.

The security guard on duty then asked Taher to open the bag in case it contained the owner's information.

“We were shocked to find so much gold, no wonder it was so heavy,” he said. Those who owned the possession which was worth over N249 million were happy that it had been returned to them in one piece, hence, the authorities honoured the cleaner.

Politics / Olusegun Osoba Narrates How He Escaped Assasination 5 Times During Military Regi by schoolnascam: 11:38am On Jul 02, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

Chief Olusegun Osoba is a Nigerian journalist and politician. Contents. 1 Early life; 2 Education; 3 Journalism; 4 Political career; 5 Personal life ... Chief Olusegun Osoba started his career in journalism in 1964 working with the Daily ... covering crime stories and by 1966, he was the diplomatic correspondent of the Times.
According to a report by The Nation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Aremo Olusegun Osoba on Monday reflected on how he escaped assassination five times during the military regime.
He recalled that he was a ‘’marked man’’ because of his objection to the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Chief Moshood Abiola.
Although the eminent politician and two-time governor of Ogun State said he did not know that a price had been put on his head by the late Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha’s elite Strike Force, he had lived to thank God for his survival.
Osoba, journalist, businessman and elder statesman, reflected on the dark days of the military rule in his 341-page memoir: ‘’Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politics’,’ published by Diamond Publications Limited. The book will be presented to the public next Monday as part of activities marking his 80th birthday in Lagos.
The veteran journalist and former Managing Director of Daily Times said little did he guess that he was also marked for liquidation after his friend, the late Dr. Alex Ibru, and his leader, the late Senator Abraham Adesanya, were shot in Lagos.
He recalled:
Quote
“I never knew my life was hanging by a thread until Sergeant Rogers revealed that I was high on the list of Nigerians targeted for death by the hit squad. I was, therefore, in total shock when I learnt of the conflict and confusion between Sergeant Rogers and Major Al-Mustapha during their interrogation by the Special Investigation Panel set up by the transitional military regime under General Abdulsalami Abubakar after Abacha’s death.
“In the drama, well captured by TELL magazine (February 13, 2012, p. 35) Rogers’ boss, Al-Mustapha, vehemently denied ever sending him to kill anyone. An enraged Sergeant Rogers countered, insisting: “You sent me. You sent us to RUTAM House. You sent us on an assignment for the assassination of Alex Ibru, Kudirat Abiola, Segun Osoba, Bola Ige, (and) Abraham Adesanya. You sent us on these assignments.”
“When Al-Mustapha persisted in his denial, Rogers rebuked him sharply. “I believe you should be bold enough to come out and say the truth. Why (are you) denying this? I believe you should be bold. Because you’ve been telling us that you are going to protect us, we should not worry. You should be bold enough to come out. And you are a major!” This drama was set against the backdrop of the June 12, 1993 crisis and its aftermath.”

Osoba lamented that the polity trembled under Abacha when his killer squad went after pro-democracy crusaders and anti-annulment forces, including the late Chief Alfred Rewane, the late Mrs. Kudirat Abiola, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), Commodore Dan Suleiman and Lt-Gen. Alani Akinrinade, whose property were burnt by soldiers.
Painting an awful picture of repression and intimidation, the former governor said it was confounding to him that members of the killer squad waited in front of his house for a whole day to kill him, as claimed by Sergeant Rogers.
He added:
Quote
“It was the divine hand of God at play also when, unknown to me, Rogers had trailed my car from Lagos to Sagamu interchange with intent to kill me, but was delayed at a military checkpoint, shortly after I had passed, long enough for me to vanish from their sight till I got to Abeokuta. Aside from Rogers’ failed attempt, I escaped my killers on many occasions, most of the time without even knowing that a death squad was stalking me.”

Narrating series of attempts on his life, Osoba said:
Quote
The first attempt on my life was on the night of August 23, 1994 when my house was invaded. Fortunately, members of my family had travelled out of the country. Nobody was home, except the state security agent attached to me as a former governor.
“Suspecting that the intruders were armed robbers, he opened fire on them. When he exhausted his ammunition, he scaled the fence and took cover in our neighbour’s compound. My gatekeeper was not so lucky. He was shot and wounded in the head. He was rushed to Royal Cross Medical Centre, Obalende, where Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Doyin Okupe attended to him and saved his life.
“It was clear to me that this was the handiwork of Abacha’s goons. There was no evidence of breaking in. They gained access with their expert security keys without damage to my bulletproof doors. They ransacked my bedroom, took my expired passport, as well as letters Chief M.K.O. Abiola had written to me from his detention. This incident happened on the eve of August 24, 1994, Abiola’s first birthday in detention, which we had planned to mark with a mass rally at Abiola’s residence in Ikeja.
“That same August 23, 1994, Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s office was also hit and his security man, badly injured. The next day, Abacha’s thugs went to Air Commodore Dan Suleiman’s house where they attempted to burn the house down.”

Osoba recalled that when the killer squad visited again, they burnt his house, adding that he escaped by whiskers.
He stressed:
Quote
“They struck again on September 7, 1995, when they set my house in Abeokuta on fire at about 2am. Fortunately, I don’t sleep early. I just heard a spark. By the time I rushed out of bed, the whole place was filled with smoke. My Boys Scout and leadership training programmes in Man O’War Bay during my secondary school days had taught me that when there is fire, you don’t stand erect. Instead, you crawl, to avoid inhaling carbon monoxide that could suffocate and kill. That was what saved me.
“My bedroom was totally burnt. I lost a lot of documents, photographs and irreplaceable valuables.
I headed straight to the Fire Brigade in Abeokuta to seek help. Providentially, I had re-equipped and modernised the Fire Brigade in 1993 when I was governor. I reaped the dividends. They contained the fire.”

Osoba said after their failed attempts in Abeokuta, the ruthless killers came to his Dolphin Estate home in Lagos and laid siege for a whole day, adding that, unknown to them, he had gone out on a visit to his neighbours, Mr. Segun Olusanya, Chief John Akinleye and Chief Adeyi.
He added:
Quote
“If Rogers and his squad had known my habit, they would have ambushed me during one of my evening visits to my neighbours. The confession of Sergeant Rogers made the headlines in all the newspapers on January 12, 2000. The Punch screamed: “Rogers Weeps”. The National Concord reported: “Rogers Opens Up.
“The Comet, which later morphed into The Nation, reported: “Sergeant Rogers Speaks at last: How we went in search of Porbeni, Ige, Ibru, Osoba, Adesanya on killing missions”. Whilst being cross-examined by then Lagos State Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Rogers disclosed how as a member of the Strike Force he had been assigned to assassinate four persons.
“According to him, “They are the owner of The Guardian newspaper, Mr. Alex Ibru, Chief Segun Osoba, Mr. Bola Ige and Pa Abraham Adesanya. He (Mustapha) gave us some money through the OC MOPOL. He also gave us N25, 000 to give Danbaba for a work well done.”

Osoba pointed out that, although Rogers did not know his Ikoyi residence, an informant, one Alhaji Lateef, who spoke Hausa fluently, gave a clear description of the house in Dolphin Estate.
The former governor said vigilance was the watchword during the dark days, noting that his wife, Aderinsola, was also being trailed to her school and market.
To report suspicious movements around the house, he said his wife, a former Customs officer, strategically gave permission to some tyre vulcanizers to ply their trade opposite the house to enable them report suspicious movements or activities.
Osoba said when he went underground for almost a year, security agents from Alagbon Close, Ikoyi usually invaded his family’s privacy to ransack the building between 2 am and 3 am under the guise of looking for him.
He said he literality fell into depression when Mustapha and others were discharged and acquitted in court, adding that he only regained his composure after The Guardian newspaper on July 31, 2013 came out with a well-researched and lucid editorial, which reflected his concerns.
Venting his anger, Osoba said: “What the judgment has done is to authenticate impunity. It reinforces the conviction that here in Nigeria, only the small man pays for his crimes. Above all, it means that all those behind the dastardly acts and litany of woes freely dispensed by the Abacha regime have finally got away, literally with murder, in a manner that calls to question the essence of government or its readiness or capacity of discharge its basic responsibility of protecting lives and property, and enforcing law and order.
Quote
“With justice now put off over these murders and the killers still unfound, the cleansing Nigeria needs remains elusive. And the blood of the victims, still raw on the pavement of the hearts of Nigerians, cry out ever more loudly for justice.”

Osoba disclosed that when he decided to go under, a prominent businessman, Dr. Oba Otudeko, took the risk of hiding him in his office for about six weeks. However, when he came out of hiding, he was promptly arrested and detained at Police Force Headquarters.
The former governor recalled that he escaped being arrested for the second time in June 1994, after he led former Edo State Governor John Odigie- Oyegun, his Anambra State counterpart, Emeka Ezeife and Dr. Doyin Okupe to Abiola at his Ikeja residence to discuss his proposed declaration as president.
He said:
Quote
“On my way back from Abiola’s Ikeja residence, my wife called me up again on my cell phone to inform me that the house had been sealed up by security operatives who were looking for me. This was around 9 pm. I quickly diverted to my father-in-law’s residence in Yaba and sent the driver away.
“When I called my wife up that I had taken refuge at her father’s, she objected on the ground that it would be too easy for the government to figure it out that such a place would be my likely port of call. Thanks to her quick thinking, she suggested that I should relocate to Abule-Oja, to the home of my auntie, Princess (Mrs.) Adefunmilayo Aderinsola Oyekan-Williams.
“How did I survive in Abule-Oja? My hostess was a lady of the old Lagos stock. Hers was an impeccably clean and well-ordered home, where everything was in the proper place. The environment spoke volumes of her background as the elder sister to the then Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II, the Oba of Lagos. Hers was an enviable pedigree of well-trained Isale Eko Christian family.
“With a well-trained house-help, Mama and I were alone upstairs in her apartment. A young man and his fiancé lived downstairs. I therefore felt very secure here. An octogenarian, she treated me like a child, waking up at night to check that I was well and safe.
Recalling how he escaped being captured for the third time, Osoba said: “The third in my series of hide-and-seek games with the Abacha Security machinery occurred one quiet Saturday morning in 1995 when my chauffeur, Peter, called me up on the intercom at home that he needed to brief me on an important security development.
“Agitated, he informed me that he was suspicious of some strange movements around the house. He said he saw my chief detail as governor alighting on the main road and that the car from which he dropped drove past the house with some people only to return empty. I got the message that my former chief detail, an SSS operative, must have escorted some of his colleagues to identify my residence. I asked Peter to take my wife’s school bus.
“I climbed in and lay flat on the floor and managed to escape what turned out to be an attempt to arrest me. At Ikoyi hotel I dropped off, hailed a cab and headed straight to the mainland residence of my brother-in-law, Mr. Stan Olawanle Adeyemi. This was the beginning of almost one year in self-imposed detention. Stan and Gboyega Onabanjo (Chief Bisi Onabanjo’s son) were the only persons who knew my hideout. Stan arranged a Togolese cook to cater to my needs throughout. My only means of communications was my 090 mobile phone.

Osoba lamented that gruesome murders outlived the military regime, stressing that eminent Nigerians, including the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Harry Marshall (March 3, 2003) Aminasoari Alfred Dikibo (February 6, 2004), Funso Williams (July 27, 2006), Kunle Arojo, Dipo Dina, and the Lukotun of Ake, Chief Yomi Bamgbose, the Iyaloja of Ijebu Ode , Alhaja Alimot Shadia Elewuju, the Onimole of Lagos, Kayode Adesina, Animashaun Age, and Gen. Muhammadu Shuwa, were assassinated after the restoration of civil rule.

Crime / Renowned Nigerian Author, Chika Tells How She Was Almost Raped By An Evangelist by schoolnascam: 11:39pm On Jul 01, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

Renowned Nigerian author, Chika Unigwe has narrated how she was almost raped when she was a freshman in UNN. She went on to recall other incidents where she was sexually assaulted by grown men, including by their family doctor and a cousin.

Unigwe, who is a member of the Organising Team at TEDxEuston, wrote on Facebook:

My freshman year at UNN, a guy almost raped me.He threatened to bring out a gun, he slapped me, he said I could scream as loudly as I wanted , no one would come to help me (apparently, unbeknowst to me, he had a reputation for being a rapist so "whoever went to his room was asking for it." )

Years before then, I was still in high school, our family physcian whom I called uncle , touched me up on his examination table.

Years before then, I was in elementary school then, my mother's cousin cornered me in the kitchen and squeezed my non-existent boobs.

The UNN guy, let's call him EE, is now some sort of 'evangelist' in Lagos; the physician is still practicing, somewhere in Europe; my mother's cousin is dead.

It's been many years , but I've never forgotten. I also never told my mother until many , many years after the fact. People saying they don't believe Busola Dakolo because she's only now telling her story should take several seats behind. There are reasons why sexual assault victims in our society keep quiet.

For one, ours is one where the culture of victim blaming/shaming is entrenched. To be raped is to become 'damaged goods.' EE raped with impunity because he knew the consequences, socially (and culturally), were worse for his victims than it would be for him. Victims found thesmselves in the uncomfortable position of protecting him so they could protect themselves. No one really expected justice from the authorities (school or police) in any case.

Had he succeeded in raping me, I'd have told my brother (only so that my brother could organize to have him beaten up).Even if I had had the courage to walk around campus with the scarlet letter on my forehead, the shame we force rape victims to carry, I would have thought of reporting him to authorities as an exercise in futility.

In the past days, I've read heartbreaking stories on my twitter TL: a father beating his daughter for "allowing herself to be raped"; a mother beating her daughter for reporting that she was touched inappropriately by an older relative etc. etc. etc.

I remember, a few yeats ago, reading of a man who forced his daughter's rapist to marry her to "wipe away the shame." ): ):

Years ago, I took a break from Osuofia after I watched 'Osuofia Speaks French' where the character marries his rape victim (by whom he has a son), and her parents and friends, happy for her , tell her she's no longer a 'fallen woman' and "Now, your son is no longer a bastard."

That has long been the dynamics of rape in our society: the power to give and to rehabilitate rests with the criminal.

However, things seem to be changing. It's been heartening to hear stories of parents who've acted like they should; to see that there seems to be a movement determined to force offenders to answer for their crimes; that there is a new generation of Naija parents raising children to understand that there is no excuse for rape, and therefore the shame of the crime belongs ONLY to the criminal.

Soon, we will break down the wall of undeserved shame that walls victims in and emboldens offenders. The future is bright #MeToo

Sometimes a very educated person speaks and you are in awe as to whether this person is really educated or just plan clueless, how can a celebrated lawyer like Femi Fani Kayode claim the herdsmen meat are already built for ritual purposes. This is what I consider the height of defamation and slander! I can never agree with this man's point of view and statements like the one he made below, reinforces my stance. Read his accusation on the fulani herdsmen below:

I stopped eating cow meat when I learnt that the herders have sex with the cows before they are sold and slaughtered for their meat. This is done for sexual gratification and ritual purposes. The meat is charmed. That is why herdsmen NEVER eat cows: they eat goats and chicken.

Crime / Benin Electricity Distribution Company Power Transmission Centres In Flames(Vid) by schoolnascam: 2:49pm On Jun 30, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

The power transmission center of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has been gutted by fire.

The cause of the inferno, which started at about 8am on Sunday has not been established.

Eyewitnesses said officers of the Fire Service failed to arrive at the scene early.

BEDC operation covers Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti.

Recently, Governor of Ondo, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, berated the company over its services in the state.

Akeredolu said the southern senatorial district was the most affected.

The governor, who spoke at a wedding ceremony in Okitipupa, stated that no government would be comfortable seeing a large percentage of its population live in darkness.

“We have not relented on a day at putting this issue on the door steps of the concerned authorities, the Distribution Company, DISCO; Tansmission Company of Nigeria, TCN and Niger Delta Power Holding of Nigeria, NDPHN.

“We have met severally with the Distribution Company for our State, Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC and have registered displeasure at the services,” he said

Celebrities / Wole Soyinka Involved In Another Seat Incident by schoolnascam: 8:51am On Jun 30, 2019
From: collinsuchendusblog.com

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has been involved in another seat incident, barely a week after a plane seat incident involving him and a young man went viral.

Recall that billionaire businessman-cum-politician, Tonye Cole on Monday shared how a young man ordered the 85-year-old playwright off his (young man’s) seat aboard a plane.

The matter quickly snowballed into a debate over right and morality, with many divided over whether it was morally right for a young man to order an octogenarian off a seat – whether his by right or not.

In the latest incident, a social media user, Lekan H. Alli-Balogun, said that Soyinka entered a place and found someone sitting on a seat reserved for him.

However, the revered playwright jocularly retorted, “Not again”, sending everyone present into a fit of laughter.

Alli-Balogun said, “Someone just mistakenly sat on Wole Soyinka seat just now …

“Baba entered and saw someone one his seat

“WS. retorted ‘Not again’

“Everyone busts out laughing”.

"You Were Jealous Because We Slept With Femi Otedola" - Matharoo Sisters Slam Venita Akpofure

All the "SMALL girls with BIG GOD" are out here fighting themselves over claim to social status! Venita Akpofure unfortunately lost her 5 years old marriage recently due to some serious issues of domestic violence and lack of funds to maintain the marriage. We never knew the Matharoo sisters were one of her rivals! thing is, Venita used to be a Video Vixen before she settled down and the story with all the ladies in the industry is very alarming, the video vixens and how men frolic to them for sexual favours.

The Matharoo sisters were Canadian socialites of Indian Heritage, their beauty was a sight to behold, they ran the Nigeria social scene when they were reigning. One of the people they bedded was billionaire, Femi Otedola. They were having such a brilliant time in Nigeria till they decided to blackmail the billionaire, Femi Otedola on the back that they slept with him, this was there ultimate downfall. Femi Otedola dealt with them severely and forced them to flee from Nigeria. Kiran Matharoo came out of her hiding yesterday when the news that Venita Akpofure marriage had crashed, she laid bare the piece of her mind on how Venita Akpofure was jealous of she and her sister when they were sleeping with billionaires in Lagos, see her full message below:
