From: collinsuchendusblog.com The Court in this photo is known as the Red Cross Building Located at Pound Road Aba, Abia State. This building is so dilapidated that the Magistrates no longer sit in the court which has a court room upstairs and another one down stairs. The roof is blown off and when it rains the courtroom is flooded. In the past the Magistrate who sat there complained of mosquitoes biting her legs during court sessions she had to wear leggings in order to sit. In fact she brought her own standing fan to ward of mosquitoes because the Court surroundings is also very filthy. Photos here.. From: collinsuchendusblog.com When Huang Yung-Fu learned that the village where he had lived for decades was slated for demolition, the Taiwan resident decided to showcase the continued vibrancy of his home. Huang was the last remaining resident of the community that had once housed 1,200 households, mostly Chinese Nationalist veterans like Huang, who had been defeated by Mao Zedong’s Communist regime. By the mid-2000’s, real estate developers had bought out many residents to be able to raze the area, with Huang as the last holdout. Left on his own, the elderly veteran, who also has a strong creative streak, started painting every available surface of his surroundings. Walls, rooflines, and pathways became canvases for multi-colored Chinese characters and figurative motifs. Since beginning the open-ended project about ten years ago, Huang’s community has become known as Rainbow Village and he, the Rainbow Grandpa. In 2010 a local university student came across Huang’s vibrant paintings and helped raise awareness for the Rainbow Village. Over a million tourists visit each year and the Taiwanese government has since pledged to keep the village intact. From: collinsuchendusblog.com The Cambodian teenager who became an internet star in November for hawking souvenirs in several languages has enrolled in a private middle school in east China's Zhejiang province and wants to go to a top university in Beijing. Thuch Salik, 14, was greeted with song and dance by students from Zhejiang Hailiang Foreign Language School when he arrived at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai on Monday. He then went to the school in Zhuji, about three hours from Shanghai by road. Hailiang Group, a copper products manufacturer in Zhuji and owner of the school, said it would sponsor Salik's education and half of his living expenses through his university years, including postgraduate studies if Salik would pursue them, a Hailiang spokeswoman said. "He is very independent and adapting well," said Hannah Wang, Salik's teacher. "He is studying fundamental Chinese and he is coping with the studies in English and maths because there is curriculum difference between the two countries." Wang said Salik was doing very well in subjects that needed hands-on skills such as painting, music, physical education and computing. "He will have more advanced lessons once he overcomes the language barrier," Wang said. Salik became an internet sensation after a tourist posted a video clip of him online selling souvenirs in at least a dozen languages and dialects. Salik told reporters that he enjoyed speaking Chinese and wished to go to university in Beijing. The video was seen by Feng Hailiang, chairman of the group, who was impressed by Salik and wanted to help the boy realise his dream. Feng approached the family and arranged them to visit China for four days, including a school tour in January. At first Salik's parents hesitated and stepped away from the offer. They changed their mind recently and company officials went to Cambodia on Friday to help with Salik's visa application, the spokeswoman said. From: collinsuchendusblog.com Survey found that 20.14 per cent of respondents chose the UK as their first choice, ahead of the US at 17.05 per cent Chinese students are shunning the US amid the trade war with China, with many opting instead for Britain, Canada and Australia, according to money-transfer firm Easy Transfer. After the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Chinese imports last year amid accusations of IP theft and forced technology transfer, the number of Chinese students wanting to study in the US declined over concerns they may not be able to get a visa, according to Easy Transfer, a fintech start-up facilitating tuition payments for Chinese students abroad. The Beijing-based firm saw its total transaction volume reach US$776 million in 2018 and expects that to top US$1 billion this year. However, its China-to-US payment transition volume, which accounted for 95 per cent in 2015, dropped to 50 per cent in the first quarter of 2019. “There is a trend of Chinese students choosing non-US universities. The countries taking the most share of new transaction volumes and student interest are the UK, Canada, and Australia,” said Tony Gao, chief executive officer of Easy Transfer. “More and more Chinese companies are thinking about a broad set of markets when they develop outside China.” The Beijing-based company was established in 2013 by two Chinese students when they were studying in the US and found there was no convenient way to transfer funds out of China to pay tuition, housing costs and other expenses. “It was always time consuming and expensive to transfer money to overseas countries. Parents have to visit their bank in-person, often several times over multiple days,” said Gao. “Our business expanded quickly as we bring this process down to as little as three minutes and halve the service charge."
