· JANUARY 6, 2020, 1:55 AM Trump stands by threat on Iranian cultural sites, warns of 'major retaliation' Jeff Mason ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday stood by his threat to go after Iranian cultural sites, warning of a “major retaliation” if Iran strikes back for the killing of one of its top military commanders.
FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump delivers remarks following the U.S. Military airstrike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, Iraq, in West Palm Beach, Florida, U.S., January 3, 2020. REUTERS/Tom Brenner The president, speaking to reporters on Air Force One, also threatened sanctions against U.S. ally Iraq after its parliament called on American troops to leave the country.
Trump and his advisers have been defending the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani, whose death has escalated tensions in the region. Trump says Soleimani was planning attacks against Americans and said he would consider releasing intelligence reports that led him to direct the killing.
Asked about potential retaliation by Iran, Trump said: “If it happens, it happens. If they do anything, there will be major retaliation.”
Trump has said the operation was conducted to avoid war with Tehran and warned against further escalation, but he has employed tough rhetoric in public, tweeting that the United States had targeted 52 Iranian sites, some “at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture” if Iran struck any American or American assets in retaliation.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denied on Sunday that Trump said he would target Iranian cultural sites, but the president contradicted him when asked about the issue on Sunday night.
“They’re allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people and we’re not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn’t work that way,” he said.
Targeting cultural sites with military action is considered a war crime under international law, including a U.N. Security Council resolution supported by the Trump administration in 2017 and the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property.
The president also issued a threat to Baghdad after the Iraqi parliament’s call for U.S. and other foreign troops to leave the country in a backlash against the killing of Soleimani.
“We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that’s there. It cost billions of dollars to build, long before my time. We’re not leaving unless they pay us back for it,” Trump told reporters.
Trump said that if Iraq asked U.S. forces to leave and it was not done on a friendly basis, “we will charge them sanctions like they’ve never seen before ever. It’ll make Iranian sanctions look somewhat tame.”

Ex-NATO commander: This tweet was a good move by Trump (CNN)President Donald Trump said Saturday evening the United States has "targeted 52 Iranian sites" for attack should the country strike "any Americans, or American assets."
The string of tweets come after the White House formally notified Congress on Saturday of the US operation that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani on Thursday.
"We have ... targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran" and "if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets... Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD," Trump wrote in a series of tweets.

Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump ....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!
Trump's comments come following the administration warning members of Congress that Iran is expected to retaliate against the US "within weeks" for the strike, even as they failed to convince some that the operation was merited due to an imminent threat against American lives.
There are intense discussions taking place inside US military and intelligence agencies to assess whether Iran might be preparing some type of retaliatory strikes in the next few days or wait for some time, a US official with direct knowledge of the situation told CNN.
The Department of Homeland Security also issued a warning on Saturday of the potential for Iranian attacks, including possible cyber threats.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a new National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin in the wake of the drone strike that details the attack and potential Iranian threat, including previous plots against US infrastructure and cyber targets.
"Iran maintains a robust cyber program and can execute cyber attacks against the United States," reads the bulletin, which expires January 18.
Trump also threatened Iran on Tuesday, when protestors attacked the US embassy in Baghdad.
"Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities," Trump tweeted from Florida. "They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat."
And later Tuesday, while speaking with reporters as he entered a New Year's Eve gala at Mar-a-Lago, the President said he doesn't want war but that if it comes to conflict, Iran wouldn't last long.
"I don't think that would be a good idea for Iran," Trump said, adding later that a potential conflict "would go very quickly."
CNN's Zachary Cohen, Vicky Ward, Pamela Brown, Geneva Sands, Arwa Damon, Jeremy Diamond and Ryan Browne contributed to this report. |

wirinet: The biggest navy, airforce and trillions of dollars did not win them the Vietnam war, the Korean war and the Afghan war. All the wars they won was fought with allies against a poorly organized and not determined foe. Iran can obviously not fight a conventional war with the US, but Iran is master of unconventional or asymmetrical war. This has been shown in the hezbollah wars and the Houthi war. Iran would just be hitting taegets of US and it's allies and run. The US will retaliate back by hitting targets inside Iran. This can go on for decades. The US cannot invade and capture Iran easily. It will come at tremendous costs in terms of casualties and costs. The US can't take high casualties. Trash |

nanaman: Put religion aside. These Iranians are not cowards like Nigerian youths whose souls and minds have been caged by their oppressors. They are fearless and support each other, not like Nigerian youths who are selfish and self-centered. Forget it, let all US allies support her, Iran would cause a monumental havoc that US would forever remember.
See,they are not going to start calling Imams and Alfas or run to mosque for shelter, they would face the war together. They are ready to pay the price with their blood. If it were to be in Nigeria, religious houses would be full by now.
Nigerian youths, stop ranting. Drop your keypads and face your oppressors. Let them know the CHANGE they poised should start with them. Stop unnecessary arguments and flimsy issues that would not take the country to another level.
The War between them will never get here. You can read, watch and listen to news to keep yourself abreast of the latest development. However, don't watch others fighting while your house is not intact. E don pain dis one. |

Dogalmighty17: Why this is a war America may find extremely difficult to win. Sure, America has the upper hand when it comes to military tech. But Iran is surely no push over. Allied with China and Russia, Iran is also bordered by them and is the largest foriegn market for their weaponry. Neither Russia nor China will want to have America on their doorsteps which is why China keeps propping up North Korea as a buffer between it and the American allied South Korea. Russia also keeps a close tab on its border neighbors. Should any of the countries that border Russia even think of becoming allied with the US, Russia invades that country. We saw them do it to Georgia in 2008 and more recently, Ukraine. Russia and China will not hesitate to side with Iran against America should this conflict become hot.
Now, unlike Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran does have some bite behind it's bark. The thousands of yakhont missiles Iran possesses are enough to shut down shipping in the strait of homuz.
THE STRAIT OF HOMUZ AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT. This strait is where a majority of the ships humanity depends for international movement of goods must pass. It lies very close to Iran. If this strait is filled with anti-ship mines, global shipping will be drastically reduced. Also, the strait lies very well within the range of thousands of Iranian artillery and missiles. Any American war vessel that finds itself within this strait, will be sunk. America may posses some of the finest anti ballistic missile technology there is, but none of them have been battle tested. The Patriot missile system is garbage. Iran has also recently purchased the most advanced aerial denial missile system in the world. The Russian built S-400. This system can engage and bring down simultaneously, around 96 different targets! The Americans have nothing close to this.
IN WHAT OTHER WAY CAN IRAN RETALIATE? For one, the Iranians have a very advanced cyberwarfare department. Expect to see them attacking American electricity grids, banking systems and even healthcare industry.
The Iranians also have sleeper cells all over the world that can be activated to Target specific Americans. One such sleeper cell they had deep in Washington DC, was able to carry out an attack on a Saudi Arabian General that was on their list.
Expect the Iranians to also Target all Trump properties across the globe. These are legitimate Targets.
Iran has equipped Hezbollah in Lebanon with thousands of missiles. At Irans word, Hezbollah can launch these missiles into Israel. The iron dome anti missile system Israel possesses can't cope with such massive volume of incoming projectiles. Remember that 14 years ago, Israel and Hezbollah engaged in serious military combat. Israel could not defeat Hezbollah and a truce had to be called.
This conflict will likely become a war of attrition. Iran can afford to lose thousands of its soldiers. Can the United States do same?
In all, this was a poorly thought out decision by Trump. The world awaits the consequences. You were making sense until you took sides, keep deceiving yourself... Abiiii US don misbeehive.... Oya naa IRAN perform your magic. |
