El-Rufai is not popular in the north the way you people see him politically... He became Governor through the Buhari tsunami in the north... Do you know that APC won the Kaduna state Governorship election with less than 20k votes, this is when El-Rufai is a sitting Governor.
El-Rufai is same as Amaechi, they look popular outside their regions and that will make them a liability to any candidate that pick them as running mate.

Did Tinubu lose the 2023 election? All 3 major candidates lost some states, What matters is that Tinubu won with the highest number of votes as declared by INEC.

They had their best chance in 2023, even the sitting President then was supporting them with policies that was hurting the APC as a party, but both Atiku and Obi can't see the pictures clearly...
