Politics / Reno Omokri Explain Rates Policy, Encourages Buying Made In Nigeria by ThatFairGuy1: 4:45pm On Apr 28
Dear Nino,

Thank you for your feedback. Please allow me clear your misconception. The Naira was never ₦600 to $1 or ₦150 to $1. Those were arbitrarily pegged rates. They were pegged by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which had to support such rates with $1.5 billion monthly.

It is just like saying petrol was ₦87. No, it was not. That was an artificially fixed price, which costs Nigeria $1 billion a month to sustain.

We had a choice. Either eliminate these unsustainable subsidies or sacrifice good roads, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure.

The principal reason why the Naira depreciates under this new regime is because our legal tender is now being floated. No longer are we wasting $1.5 billion a month artificially defending the Naira. The country's currency is now responding to the laws of demand and supply.

This means that the more foreign goods and services Nigeria imports and the less of our own goods and services we export, the more the downward pressure on the Naira.

Let me give you a few statistics on how the irresponsible consumption habits of Nigerians are driving the depreciation.

Please fact-check me. Below is what Nigerians were using the subsidised Naira to buy:

$200 million per annum on Brazilian hair that is, in reality, hair sacrificed in Indian, Vietnam and Cambodian temples. $20 million a day on MTN and Airtel. $1.5 billion annually to gamble with foreign sports betting and gambling apps. £25 million on Scotch whiskey. $75 million on champagne.

Now, what is Nigeria's single biggest import? Fuel. We spend an average of $10 billion importing refined petroleum products. That is $10 billion that weakens the Naira and strengthens the Euro (because we primarily import fuel from Europe).

Please be patient until June 2024, when the Dangote Refinery comes on stream. It will have the single most significant positive impact on the Naira since 1973.

Until then, Nino, do your part and #GrowNairaBuyNaija.

Thanks again, and may God bless you.

Back to your comment, I can't see any word of encouragement or suggestions to alleviate the OP's situation.

Hello Nairalanders, how is the economy treating you all?

I just want to share a little with you what happened yesterday.

I would start by saying if life is still hard for those working and earning, you can imagine what is happening to those who are job seekers.

As a job seeker who is not getting help anywhere, most times you are left to do something drastic just to survive at the very period and that was what I did yesterday. Only those who have been in my situation would understand.

So while job hunting yesterday in far away place, hungry, needy and thirsty, I came across a building site and I opted to work to earn something. The contractors thought I was joking until they asked what I can do and I told them anything. They asked if I can use wheel barrow to convey gravels from one place to another and I answered yes.

"oya, see wheel barrow and see gravels, convey them from point A to B. Start work"- contractor.

I immediately untucked my clothes and hit the barrow and that was it. Not like I liked it looking at how strenous the job is, but condition pushed me into it. As I was working, I was praying to God for energy to do it and I could have done more but due to hunger, I did my best and that was how I earned a little something yesterday so survive as I didn't have any other money with me.

May be the money would have taken me for two days or more but we all know the level of inflation in Nigeria today.

How about body pain? I haven't been myself since that yesterday. Hard pains all over my body, plus wounds on my pams. It is well.

Please government and organizations should look into and provide jobs for the youths. It's very deadly staying in Nigeria today without a job or assistance anyway. It's an excuse many use getting involved with crime and it can be suicidal also.

"May the glory of tomorrow take away all shame and be greater than that of today"..

Thanks for reading.

Sports / Bet9ja Confirms N3m As Settlement For Lukman by OmihaniFARH: 2:06pm On Apr 25
Lukman Iyke Bede delves into the complaint of an aggrieved punter, Issa Lukman, who is insisting on receiving an outstanding balance of N13 million despite entering a full and final payment agreement with Bet9Ja several months ago

Issa Lukman, a disgruntled punter who placed a bet on the Bet9JA platform, has resurfaced online, accusing the betting company of withholding his entitlement. This comes after Bet9JA paid him N3 million from his N16 million winnings several months ago.

Lukman, on Sunday, September 10, 2023, visited a Bet9JA shop located at 20 Shadare Compound, Iddo, Lagos, to place a total of 37 games played over several days, hoping to win despite such high odds. He staked N1,000 on ticket B928CTTCZSPWRE-10675073 to cash out the sum of N16,705,938.18.

At the end of the final game, he discovered he had won and proceeded to the shop, but only to be told the ticket had already been cashed out days earlier by another person, who apparently had an identical ticket. Perplexed by the development, he visited the sports betting platform’s head office to make a complaint.

By October 5, 2023, N3 million was transferred to his account by one Bamigbade Gbenga through a Providus Bank account. Currently, Lukman expects the remainder of his winnings to be paid, rallying netizens to his aid.

“I visited Bet 9JA shop located at No. 20, Shadare Compound, Iddo, Lagos State, (and) placed a bet with ticket number B928CTTCZSPWRE-10675073 and won the sum of N16,705,938.18 (sixteen million seven hundred and five thousand, nine hundred and thirty-eight naira and eighteen kobo) and the amount has been paid into my bank account. That I have settled with the defendant amicably,” said an affidavit dated September 10, 2023, and sworn by Lukman at the Chief Magistrate Court of Lagos shared with GAMING WEEK.

The affidavit suggested that the individual in question had previously resolved their issue with the defendant in an amicable manner after receiving payment. Although it did not expressly state N3 million, the affidavit confirmed he was paid in full without detailing how they reached an amicable agreement.

To delve deeper into the matter, we sought clarification from Adewale Akande, the Head of Legal at Bet9Ja, to understand why Lukman is now insisting on receiving the outstanding balance of N13 million despite several months’ passage.

“The guy was supposed to win N16 million, but while the game was still running, the cashier who had originally printed an original ticket and a ‘second’ original ticket—I don’t know how that is possible. Only those in operations would know—gave it to her boyfriend, and the boyfriend came to claim a cash-out,” Akande revealed.

He added, “The ticket was sent to the agent who unknowingly approved it, and they cashed out N1.7 million. Unfortunately for them, probably because they have been doing this for a long time, the game was a winning ticket. The customer came to collect his winnings, and of course, he’s entitled to his winnings. It was at that point they discovered the ticket had already been cashed out.

“So when they did the investigation, they discovered it was the cashier in connivance with her boyfriend. The two of them were picked up by the police and transferred to Panti (State Criminal Investigation Department), detained, and arraigned before the magistrate court a few weeks ago.”

Considering the punter’s predicament, which was neither Bet9JA nor the punter’s fault, both parties entered a settlement agreement.

Akande elaborated that the customer reached a compromise agreement with Bet9JA, and they paid him N3 million. He then undertook to collect the sum of N3 million as the full and final payment of his winnings.

The court case involving the unnamed cashier and her boyfriend is currently underway.

Several stories like this abound. They will try to either destroy evidences or claim that the bet was not properly placed. There must always be one story to withhold winnings.

You win you cry to get your money. You lose, you cry over your losses. Nonsense lifestyle, this sports betting.

Next thing is to secure the service of a good lawyer.

They present their organizations as legitimate and with integrity. In the end people get disappointed.

Anyway that’s the business of those who play bet9ja and other sports bet.

Oga, no live was ruined legitimately except the lives of the greedy ones that sell Thier property to bet just like some people sell property to japa. It's not the right way of doing things.
People makes money on per minute from bookmakers( bet9ja etc) both locally and international. it's a huge business world wide. Go and check. Infact, no Nigerian bookmakers make the list of 1st 100 bookmakers globally, the well celebrated bet9ja was ranked above 600+, so sporting is a huge investment. Now, only greedy people get addicted to it because the hardly differentiate btw gambling and forcasting. You can make money in many ways depending on the level of mathematics or arithmetic understanding. Gambling is not good but forcasting pays. Just imagine someone want to win 10M with 100 or 1000naira no be juju be that? Lolz. That's why I said the guy tried. betting has many approaches, but I prefer trading. Exactly as we trade stocks and forex. That's why I made my comments. I don't know about gambling but I know most people do.

You used the right word at a point to describe what I earlier stated. The word is “addiction”. It is a very strong desire to become part of. It can be a very uncontrollable behavior. For example, the thought that 10 naira played can yield 1million, possibly can lure people into playing. Strong desire and belief is the fuel needed to power that urge, irrespective of the losses encountered. That’s why I said that it ruins lives. Again, we have seen youths who have been lamenting over their losses and inability to stop sports bet.

Forecasting and gambling are twin brothers. To forecast is to predict. It is to look forward. For sone, it drives the confidence to gamble.

In all, we must all be wise. Even the companies always say “bet wisely”. So it’s the choice of the customer to either play or walk away to avoid sad stories like this.
