Tragedy struck on Tuesday at the Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State, after four teenagers drowned while swimming in the water.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 10 secondary school leavers, aged between 14 and 15, went to swim at the beach to celebrate the completion of their West African Senior School Examination.

They were said to be pupils of the Kuramo Senior College, Lekki.

The spokesperson for the Elegushi Beach Management, Chief Ayuba Elegushi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the pupils were not properly registered.

He noted that the incident happened at an unmanned section of the beach not open to the public.

He said, “We initially sent them away from the area of the beach they wanted to swim in. Then, they went to another place that was not for the public at all. It was the child of our kinsman, Abass, who took them from school to the beach and those kids followed him.

“They did not pay any gate fee to access the beach. Abass used the leverage that he was one of us to take them through another place.”

The victims were said to have raised the alarm as the water swept them away.

Elegushi said some life guards plunged into the water and brought out six of the pupils.

“Out of the six that were rescued, some escaped by the time we got there. We were able to arrest two of them and we took them to the Jakande Police Station .

“As of now, there are still four missing as our seamen have not been able to bring them out of the water. We have informed their parents and they have come to the police station.

“Abass is one of the missing kids. There is another boy we have not identified and two other girls,” he added.

The Spokesperson said the two boys that were arrested told the police that they were chased from the beach before sneaking into the restricted section to swim.

He said, “They wrote in their statements that they were chased from the first section they went to. Abass told them that they should not worry and he would take them to another part of the beach. He took them to another end of the beach where no one could see them.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said, “The teenagers were from Kuramo Senior College, Lekki. Four of them are missing. They are two males and two females. Efforts are on to recover their bodies. We have yet to meet with the parents of the victims.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Waterways Authority, Saheed Adesanya, said he would confirm the incident and get back to our correspondent.

He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Lady narrates how her mother allegedly chopped off her hand and slashed her face with a machete

Glory Smart Emenuwe, a young woman from Ezhionum community in Delta State has narrated how she was allegedly brutalized by her mother.

The lady said she was almost killed by her mother in 2013, who allegedly chopped off her two hands and slashed her face with a machete.

She Said;

“What happened to me could be likened to an accident because I never expected it. However, it was my mother that chopped off my hands and slashed my face.

“On that fateful day, while I was still very young, I woke up one night wanting to urinate, so my father asked my mother to lead me with a torchlight to the back of our house where I could urinate.

“While I squatted to urinate, I didn’t know my mother had a machete in her hand. The next thing I remember was that she descended on me with the machete and I fell down.

“While I was down, she continued to cut me all over my body and I was screaming. It was then that my father rushed out and collected the machete from her and raised an alarm, which attracted the neighbours.

“Unfortunately, by the time my father rushed out, my mother had already accomplished her intention. My father wanted to use the machete on her too but was stopped by the neighbours.

“Afterwards, my father got my mother arrested by the police. However, she’s late now. The incident happened in Edo State in 2013.”

The victim appealed to the government and Nigerians for help, saying;

“I’ll like to go into trading and I don’t have start-up capital. I stopped my education at the primary level but if I can get a sponsor, I will like to further my education.

“I came from a poor family and I have no helper. This is why I have nothing to do, so your assistance will be of great relief.”

The Ogun So-Safe Corps has arrested a commercial motorcyclist for allegedly abducting and attempting to rape and kill a female passenger in Sango-Ota area of the state.

The okada rider, 21-year-old Idowu Adebayo, was arrested Tuesday for a case of abduction and attempted murder of 17-year-old Blessing John, who was his passenger.

Residents of Ayegbe village, Lisa in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, were said to have reported at Lisa/Oluke Divisional Headquarters of So-Safe Corps that Adebayo was seen struggling with the teenage girl at about 6:30pm on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the victim, Blessing John, had gone to Joju market, Sango Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, to get vegetables for her mother.

While returning home, the victim saw Adebayo, who was riding his okada, stopped him and negotiated the fare to Joju market with him.

A statement released from the Office of the State Commander of the corps, Soji Ganzallo, it was learnt that “the Okada rider took the girl from Abule Iroko via Itoki village to a bush in Ayegbe village and attempted to rape and kill her before she was rescued by some farmers, who heard her call for help and rushed to the scene, while So-Safe was contacted.”

Ganzallo said the victim was rescued by the operations team of the corps, who promptly apprehended the suspect.

Ganzallo said he had instructed that the crime scene be revisited as part of the preliminary investigation and to ascertain that the scene is not a place of hibernation for miscreants.

The Zonal Commander of the Corps was also instructed by Ganzallo to ensure no bush or forest is left uncombed in that axis.

He disclosed that the suspect have been transferred to the Ifo Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and likely prosecution.
