Originally, the meaning of 'Omo-ale'= The child of ALE.

What is ALE?

ALE= UNWEDDED Sexual Partner.

So, originally when some is referred to as 'Omo-ale' = A child born out of wedlock.

N:B 'Yoruba culture approve of Polygamy ' so any child whose father paid Bride-price of the mum and perform other marriage rites is NOT an omo-ale.

it is only a woman child that is considered an omo ale. A child born out of wedlock for a man is not considered an omo ale

Omo ale literally means a child that was fathered by a concubine. However, that meaning has expanded over time to include any child whose behavior/character is questionable and different from the father/father's. Hence the saying that "omo ale lo n fowo osi juwe Ile baba re" (a bastard is a child that points at the father's house with the left hand- the left hand here signifies disrespect) ...an omo oko will respectfully point to his father's house using his right hand. I've seen and read different people using the word 'Omo-Ale' in this forum and believe me you have been using it wrongly.
Ọmọ in Yoruba means Child.
Ale means concubine or anyone you are in a sexual relationship with but not legally married to.
So literally, Ọmọ-Ale is the child from any relationship that the parents are not legally married.
It does not have anything to do with the tribe of the mother.
So if your mother is Hausa for instance and father is Yoruba. You are a true Ọmọ-ọkọ and a genuine Ọmọlúwàbí. Even the great Sango's mother is not a Yoruba woman but he was crown a king in Yoruba land.

A Yoruba Proverb says Ọmọ Ale ni ọmọ tí ó bá fi ọwọ juwe ilé bàbà ẹ.
Which means a bastard is the child that despise his father's house.
