that is not correct.... a child by a man concubine out of wedlock is not consider an omo ale. yoruba believe and culture allows a man to take as many wives as possible and concubine

the child of a concubine share in the will of a man. a man will is share in yorubaland base on the number of children he has. not the number of wives.

The meanings of words change with time.

Originally, the meaning of 'Omo-ale'= The child of ALE.

What is ALE?

ALE= UNWEDDED Sexual Partner.

So, originally when some is referred to as 'Omo-ale' = A child born out of wedlock.

N:B 'Yoruba culture approve of Polygamy ' so any child whose father paid Bride-price of the mum and perform other marriage rites is NOT an omo-ale.

it is only a woman child that is considered an omo ale. A child born out of wedlock for a man is not considered an omo ale

Are you actually Yoruba or you are just trying to project.

Because "eni to ba bimo funi ti kuro ni ale eni eni"
Meaning "A women who has given birth to your child is no more a concubine, she becomes a wife automatically"

But that's a proverb or saying. It only highlights that children born won't be unwelcomed and won't be denied simply because the parents are not married neither will be woman be shunned off.

It still doesn't change the meaning of omo ale-child of a concubine, born out of wedlock or bastard

So what do you say of this proverb Ile ti o n toro omo ale ibe ni o ti dagba simply put- A home is still peaceful because the bastard or child out of wedlock has not grown.

So how do you now define omo-ale in the context above. There's a reason why this proverb specifically mentioned omo-ale.

There's a reason why there's omo-ale and omo-oko.

@the emboldened.

You missed the definition of that. "Omo ale" in that context is not literarily "bastard" but somoene whose behaviour is not consistent with the peaceful nature of everyone else.

Being an omo ale sometimes just mean you are intent on destroying the home and not giving people peace of mind

Omo ale is a child with paternity misrepresentation in my opinion. So long as the paternity is clear, it doesn't matter if his/her parents are married or not.

Of course It could also be seen that way that's where the omo - ale is used as an insult or projection of a particular set of strange characters come in

But that proverb - I feel it's about the literal meaning because there's also the school of thought that the reason someone would exhibit strange characters is because he's not an omo - oko

Also the omo-ale saga extends further to a child whom the mother transferred the pregnancy of another man to her husband hence he would be of strange blood and exhibiting strange characters.

Anyway I think omo-ale generally means two major things

1. A child of parents not wedded
2. A pregnancyof another brought in as the Father's child i.e questionable paternity.

Though most people will incline with no 2.

Yoruba teachers/ historians should come in abeg.

1. Are you insinuating then that when a woman gives birth to another man outside of her maririage, she also automatically becomes his wife as well? Polyandry endorsed by your culture. undecided

I believe this is a recent included definition to the term. Original meaning of "Omo ale" was bastard. undecided

That proverb is modern-day invention.

In Yorubaland, there are cultural marriage rites and not any woman whom you impregnate is your wife.

Omo ale in Yoruba culture is usually used when a child portray a strange character that can't be traced to neither father or the mother hence the word Omo ale comes in ..

But mostly the father is d right person to use d statement..
meaning it's only the child a woman brought into a family to live with another man..
I.e step father to d son.

My layman contribution though 😉

Thats not what he is insinuating...

He is trying to say that.....a married woman's child for a man other than her husband be it male child or female child is omo ale i.e bastard
