5th September 2023
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday, said the protest that trailed the fuel subsidy removal during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 was due to political interests. > > The PUNCH reports that on January 1, 2012, President Goodluck announced the removal of fuel subsidy and adjusted the pump price of petrol from N65 per litre to N141.
The decision sparked mass protests, tagged âOccupy Nigeriaâ across major cities of the country.
The price was later re-adjusted to N97, after more than a week of protests.
Petrol price was later reduced to N87 in 2015.
Jonathan faced serious backlash for the fuel price adjustment, especially from leaders of the All Progressives Congress, who were then in different opposition parties, including the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressives Congress, All Nigeria Peoples Party, and All Progressive Grand Alliance. > > According to him, the last time Nigeria experienced economic development was during Jonathanâs administration

Pathetic!!! Worse than pathetic. Iyabo was right about her father clearly. In what is turning out to be a season of open letters, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo, has ruled out further communication with her father till death, describing him as a liar, manipulator, two-faced hypocrite determined to foist on President Goodluck Jonathan what no one would contemplate with him as president.
Senator Iyabo Obasanjo in a letter to her father accused him of having an egoistic craving for power and living a life where only men of low esteem and intellect thrive.
In the 11-page letter dated December 16, 2013 exclusively obtained by Vanguard, Iyabo accused her father of orchestrating a third term for himself as president, cruelty to family members, abandonment of children and grandchildren, and also, a legendary reputation of maltreatment of women.
Iyabo who forswore further political engagements in Nigeria denied any political motive for her missive, and described Nigeria as a country where her father and his ilk have helped to create a situation where smart, capable people bend down to imbeciles to survive. She particularly noted her experience as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health when she led the committee on a retreat appropriated for in the budget only for her to be prosecuted for it.
Iyabo, first child of the former president, started the letter titled, Open Letter to my Father with a 4th century Chinese proverb by Mencius which states: âThe great man is he who does not lose his childâs heart.â
Her letter:
âIt brings me no joy to have to write this but since you started this trend of open letters I thought I would follow suit since you donât listen to anyone anyway. The only way to reach you may be to make the public aware of some things. As a child well brought up by my long-suffering mother in Yoruba tradition, I have been reluctant to tell the truth about you but as it seems you still continue to delude yourself about the kind of person you are and I think for posterityâs sake it is time to set the records straight.

VinnyBaba:
Mahmud Yakubu and INEC really messed up.
Subverting The Wishes of Nigerians who voted for PETER OBI and forcing this Ebola's gazelle Gagaraga on govt us. Peter Obi cluelessly helped Tinubu achieve his Emilokan dream of continuing APCâs Ẹnikanlomáť shege in extra levels of extreme poverty, inflation, unemployment, insecurity etc. If the election was held today with the same division of the capitalist PDP group, Tinubu will win again fair and square! Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has said he is sure the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, would lose the 2023 presidential election. Soludo said he would not submit to the bullying of Obiâs supporters, who recently descended on him for addressing issues in the state.
The governor made the comments in a lengthy write-up personally authored, with the title, âHistory Beckons, and I Will Not Be Silent (Part 1).â
Soludo said Obi was inadvertently making the pathway to victory much easier for the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, and at the same time, toying with the destiny of millions of Ndigbo.
But the chief spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign, Yunusa Tanko, accused Soludo of being sponsored by some unknown persons to weaken the base of the party in the South-east.
The former CBN governor had been under intense attack for close to a week for dismissing Obiâs investment in the state as amounting to nothing, during a television interview.
Soludo said in the write-up, âMy attention has been drawn to some of the tirades on social media following my frank response during an interview on Channels TV regarding the âinvestmentsâ Mr. Peter Obi claimed to have made with Anambra State revenues.
âSadly, several of the comments left the issue of the interview to probe or suggest motives, inferred from my response on âinvestmentâ that I am opposed to Peter Obiâs ambition and, therefore, committed a âcrimeâ for which the punishment is internecine abuse and harassment, even to my family.
âEveryone knows that I donât follow the winds or one to succumb to bullies, or shy away from a good fight especially, when weighty matters of principles and future of the people are involved.â
Soludo said he had urged Obi to return to his former party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to actualise his presidential bid. He added that he had always told the LP candidate to his face that he was not capable of winning the 2023 presidential election, especially, under LP, which had neither a councillor nor a local government chairman.
Soludo said Obi was not just his friend, but also his brother, but despite that, they have their political differences.
He stated, âFor full disclosure, let me state that Peter Obi and I are not just friends, we call ourselves âbrothersâ. But we have political differences: he left APGA for PDP after his tenure as governor, while I have remained in APGA since 2013.
âDuring the last two governorship elections in Anambra in 2017 and 2021, he led the PDP campaigns but APGA won landslide in both elections. By the way, in 2016, he visited and proposed that I defect to PDP and contest the 2017 election against the incumbent Willie Obiano, but I declined.
âAfter my victory in November 2021, he called to congratulate me, as I did to him in 2010. That is the Anambra way: we fight fiercely during campaigns but share drinks at the next social events. After all, it was the Great Zik of Africa, who taught us that in politics, there are no permanent friends or permanent enemies but only permanent interests.â
Arguing that Obiâs presidential bid would only work in favour of Tinubu, Soludo said, âIndeed, if I were Asiwaju Tinubu, I would even give Peter Obi money as someone heading one of the departments of his campaign, because Obi is making Tinubuâs pathway to victory much easier by indirectly pulling down PDP.â
Obi, according to Soludo, would only deplete the votes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pave the path for an APC victory.
He stated, âThe current fleeting frenzy, if not checked, will cost Ndigbo dearly for years. The South-east has the lowest number of votes of any region, but it is also the only region where the presidential race might be a four-way race (it is a two-way race in the other five regions) thereby, ensuring that our votes wonât count in the making of the next president of Nigeria.

BreconHills:
Can you see any tribalism in my statement.
How can a Genco with its own private gas supply lack funds? The gas alone is worth more than the initial $5m raised.
Rather, itwas competing claims over the award process. The same franchise was resold to Interstate Electric and in 2013 the BPE listed the assets as belonging to Enugu Distribution Company. That logjam like the one over Zunguru persisted until this administration.
In order to honour a worthy achievement by a great man one does not denigrate the efforts of others. As I said listen to the speech that will be read by Barth and learn what actually happened.
https://guardian.ng/opinion/what-is-stalling-the-aba-power-plant/ From your Guardian link is the extract below. Soon after the creation of the Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP) in 2011, then President Jonathan expressed strong commitment to a new dawn in the electricity sector when he said, âAs President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I and my Vice President, Arc. Namadi Sambo, are conscious that what we do with the Nigerian electricity supply industry will go a long way in determining whether Nigeria remains in darkness or joins the rest of the world in the race for development.
Our commitment is to bring an end to our nationâs stunted growth and usher in the fresh air of prosperity by pursuing a new era of sector-wide reform which is driven by improved service delivery to every class of customers in the Nigerian electricity sector.â
There is no doubt that Jonathanâs government took steps to realise this goal. It was the presidentâs commitment that led to the unbundling of the omnibus PHCN since November 1, 2013 when private companies took over across the country. This is what many of us have been advocating but which has not turned out to meet the expectations.
It was under that same reform programme that Geometric Power Limited (GPL) was licensed to help bridge the electricity gap.
The company reportedly invested a whopping $500 million (about N81 billion), to build the state-of-the-art power plant designed to supply uninterrupted power to Aba and environs.
This huge investment is now laying waste, while the responsible government agencies dilly-dally.
There have been reports that high-wire politicking between the National Council on Privatization (NCP) and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) is stalling the power plant. 1 Like 2 Shares |

And he got the licence from which administration?
Do you know how many years this project was tied up in red tape? Listen to Barth Nnajis speech on the opening and learn - there is no tribalism at the top of the tree. He got the license from capitalist PDP Obasanjo and Atikuâs deregulation and private sector loving administration. It will be recalled that on May 11, 2004, the Federal Government, the now-defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and Geometric Power Limited (GPL) entered into and executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under which GPL was granted the exclusive right to construct a 3 x 35 MW open cycle gas turbine power plant and designated sub-stations in Aba, Abia State, which would generate electric power for distribution by Aba Power Limited (APL) to residential and commercial customers and to industrial clusters in a ring-fenced island in Aba.
The government, NEPA and APL executed a lease agreement on April 28, 2005, for the distribution of power to the ring-fenced residential and commercial consumers in Aba. By the terms of the agreement, NEPA assigned its right to distribute electric power in the ring-fenced area of Owerri-nta, Osisisoma, Ogbor Hill, Factory road and Port Harcourt road in Aba and also leased its distribution facilities within the contract area to Aba Power Limited.
A supplementary agreement was made on August 31, 2006, between the Federal Government, represented by the minister of power and steel, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Enugu Distribution Company (EDC) and Geometric/Aba Power Limited. EDC and TCN were substituted for NEPA as parties to the lease agreement of 2005 and assumed their respective obligations.
