Nigeria my beloved country. A country with vast population and resources that abound. A country with the potential to rule not just Africa but the world. A country that has passed through wars and yet remained strong. But alas, my country has been bedeviled with bad leadership and a crop of leaders without foresight. Lives are wasting away, people’s mind are criminally inclined now because you can’t make it through the right path easily. You either cut corners or remain where you are. We keep hoping and I keep asking myself, who are we waiting for? An old song said that the righteous are hungry but the unrighteous have got a big belly to show. It is heart breaking to see Nigeria as a nation still battling wars from Boko haram, Fulani herdsmen and poverty. Nigeria has risen to be the nation with the highest number of poor people in the world. Ethnicity, sentiments, selfishness has deteriorated Nigeria. We endure too much in our Nation. We suffer and smile at the same time. It is a myriad of questions with no forth coming answers. We have ignorant uneducated people, and even the educated that are not literate. I hear most of them speak sometimes and I question their depth of knowledge. They think and talk on what they just see on the surface. The chant of “all man for himself” has made us not see Nigeria as what we all need to work upon. It burns my heart to see a nation with potential wallowing in ignorance. We lost it all, we still claim to be the giant of Africa whereas we are not the giant of West Africa. This is fallout of leaders without foresight. We need to retrace our steps as a nation if we want to make headway. We need to consciously come together as a people to decide what we want as a nation and what we deserve. We need to holistically decide to forge new processes that will see us maximize our potential as a nation. Institutions must be strengthened to ensure that whoever comes into power must be subjective to the institution and Nigerians. Political office must be made less lucrative, it should be for only those who has the people at heart and ready to go the extra mile. Nigeria is bound to be great and will be great. Her people will flourish in wealth. We need a new blueprint with a clear path on how to restructure Nigeria. Happy Independence!!!! Olaniyi Seyi Royal Cube Media @olaniyisehhy |

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has
said that the “invasion” of the state by
security agents during the December 10
legislative rerun was an indication that the
2019 general election will be a Tsunami of
sort.
Wike said Nigerians should expect fighter
jets to be used during the next general
elections, wondering why the military,
28,000 policemen and gunboats should be
used for an ordinary legislative rerun.
The governor, who addressed journalists on
Thursday night, observed that even
Divisional Police Officers in the state were
transferred a day before the rerun.
He said, “If you can have an invasion by
the military, police, DSS and INEC for an
ordinary legislative rerun election, then if
you have presidential and governorship
election, it will be a Tsunami.
“There will be fighter jets; they will locate
people’s houses and bomb them because
that is the only thing remaining. That is
why I said anybody who is thinking about
2019 is wasting his time.
“28,000 policemen, three gunboats and
others; even DPOs were transferred a day to
the election. Some of the security agents
had charms in their vehicles for the
legislative rerun. They must bomb
everybody who does not agree with them,”
he added.
On the audio clip alleging that he
threatened officials of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Wike
described the material (audio clip) as
contrived, adding that it was sponsored by
the All Progressives Congress.
He said, “When you look at certain things,
you just laugh. At no time did I speak to
any electoral officer, let alone issue threats
to any electoral officer. There is nowhere I
spoke to an electoral officer, threatening
him or her as the case maybe.
“It is totally not correct. The major issue is:
did the police participate in rigging
election? Did the army participate in rigging
the election? Did INEC compromise?
“Let them face the reality and stop chasing
shadows. What is audio clip? What can’t
this government do? I don’t have an
orderly; I don’t have a chief security officer,
I don’t have camp commandant. All were
taken away before the election.”
The governor said rather than bring the
SARS Commander, Mr. Akin Fakorede, to
justice for the roles he played during the
rerun, as captured on video, the police
authorities arrested the policemen who
accompanied him (Wike) to stop the
commander from swapping Rivers East
Senatorial District results sheet.
He said, “They have now arrested and
detained the policemen, who accompanied
me to the collation centre to stop him.
Even Akin Fakorede, who was caught on
video, has been released so that police can
bungle it. What kind of country is this?
But the State Publicity Secretary of the
APC, Mr. Chris Finebone, said Wike was
caught pants down and had nowhere to
hide.
Finebone said, “It is important to state that
the APC have on several occasions in the
past been brought under scrutiny by
Sahara Reporters to the amusement of
Wike and the PDP. But today, they have
found it convenient to associate the APC
with Sahara Reporters.
“That is absolute falsehood coming from
him. Governor Wike should think of a better
response, which we doubt he has because
the audio recording is clear to everyone
that it is the voice of the governor
threatening to kill people.” http://punchng.com/2019-election-will-tsunami-wike/ |
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday
cleared the way for a suit challenging the
emergence of Ondo State Governor-elect,
Olurotimi Akeredolu, as the candidate of the
All Progressives Congress for the recently
concluded governorship election in Ondo
State.
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, in a ruling,
dismissed the notice of preliminary
objection challenging the competence of the
suit, which was filed by Akeredolu’s co-
aspirant in the APC’s primary, Olusegun
Abraham.
The judge dismissed Akeredolu’s objection
anchored on the ground that he was not
properly served with the court processes.
The judge said the argument was without
merit.
Justice Dimgba, after dismissing
Akeredolu’s objection on Friday, adjourned
till February 2, 2017 for the hearing of the
substantive suit.
The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/788/2016
was filed by Abraham through his lawyer,
Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George (SAN).
The plaintiff’s suit is, among others,
challenging the competence of the last
APC’s governorship primary election in
Ondo State held on September 3 this year.
The plaintiff, who raised eight questions for
determination, is praying the court to,
among others, declare that the primary was
held in violation of provisions of the APC’s
Electoral Guidelines for Governorship
Primary Election 2014.
He said the primary also flouted the party’s
constitution and was therefore invalid and
incapable of validly producing Akeredolu as
a candidate.
He also seeks an order setting aside the
primary for alleged non-compliance with
the provisions of the party’s primary
election guidelines and constitution.
Abraham, who emerged second in the
primary, equally asked the court to set
aside the purported submission of
Akeredolu’s name to INEC by Odigie-
Oyegun and the electoral body’s
acceptance of the name as the APC’s
candidate for the forthcoming governorship
election. http://punchng.com/ondo-akeredolu-loses-bid-stop-suit-challenging-candidacy/ |

The prolonged cold war between President Muhammadu Buhari and his erstwhile close political associate and South-West political strongman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, may soon come to an end. Reliable sources within the party toldSUNDAY PUNCHduring the week that the two sides began planning to bury the hatchet during a recent meeting that President Buhari held with some of Tinubu’s loyalists in Aso Rock. The President had met with the trio of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun governor, Chief Bisi Akande, and Senator Olusola Adeyeye last week Sunday. The sources also said both parties agreed that the President needed to take some confidence-boosting measures to restore Tinubu’s faith in him. The two men reportedly fell out following what Tinubu and his loyalists saw as attempts to diminish his contributions to President Buhari’s victory at the 2015 poll and erode his political capital in his South-West base. Some supporters of the former governor had also complained that the President rejected Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, and worked against the ex-Lagos governor’s candidates in the Kogi elections and Ondo governorship primary, among other ills. A reliable source who was privy to the events that culminated in the meeting said its seeds were planted during President Buhari’s three-day state visit to Germany. Prior to that time, Buhari and Tinubu had not had any private communication in a while. But the source said the President contacted Akande, who is one of Tinubu’s closest associates and a former Interim Chairman of the APC, asking him to see him in Aso Rock. The President’s call reportedly came barely 48 hours after the controversial interview the President’s wife, Aisha, granted theBritish Broadcasting Corporation. In the interview which went viral, the president’s wife accused her husband of neglecting those who helped him to power in 2015. Mrs. Buhari also threatened not to support her husband in 2019 if the President did not change tack. Sources said although both men’s relationship began to sour almost as soon as Buhari won the election, it deteriorated when Professor John Paden, in his book titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership,’ claimed that Tinubu was against the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President. Both Buhari and Tinubu were present at the book launch. Insiders say this did not go down well with Tinubu and his men, as the All Progressives Congress national leader’s camp saw it as yet another attempt by the President and his men to reduce his contributions to the emergence of the APC government and also rewrite history. http://punchng.com/secret-talks-buhari-takes-steps-end-feud-tinubu/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari may have ordered one of his senior aides to answer to the allegation of taking N500 million bribe from a leading telecommunications firm in Nigeria to reduce a huge fine imposed on it by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The aide, according to findings bySunday Vanguard, has already made statement to an investigation team headed by a top police officer mandated by the Presidency to investigate the matter and recommend disciplinary actions. A source conversant with the work of the Special Investigation Panel, SIP, confirmed that the affected presidential aide vehemently denied receiving the bribe when he appeared before the panel. It was learnt that all the officials of the telecommunications firm, MTN, who also made statements to the SIP, equally denied ever inducing any government official to get the huge fine of N1.04 trillion imposed on the firm by the NCC slashed to N300 billion to be paid out in many years. A competent source said, “Officials of MTN, who were invited and interviewed over the allegation, have vehemently denied that any such money emanated from the telecommunications company and that, since the beginning of the $5billion fine saga, nobody had been approached for bribe. “The top aide of the President, who also honoured the summon of the SIP, distanced himself from reports claiming that he ever collected the said huge sum of money from the telecoms firm. “I think the matter may just die naturally if the online medium which made the allegation does not show up and give credible evidence that the affected official ever demanded and collected the bribe”. The source went on: “It is our strong position that if such volume of money was paid through the banks, it would have been very easy to trace. It would have been possible to see where the money emanated from, and where it ended. But the problem is that the online medium that raised the alarm has refused to honour our numerous invitations to shed light on the matter”. It was gathered that MTN, deeply troubled by the allegation, had drawn the attention of the South African government to it, forcing President Jacob Zuma to discuss the issue with Buhari during his last visit to Nigeria. The NCC, Nigeria’s telecoms regulator, had slammed a $5 billion fine on MTN for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered phone lines bought before January 2012. The probe of the alleged bribe against the official in the Buhari cabinet, it was learnt, followed a directive by the Presidency to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to investigate the allegation. The Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, had explained in an interview with one of our correspondents that government deliberately slashed the MTN fine to prevent affected telecomms firm from folding up and throwing its over 500,000 Nigerians in its employ into the labour market. |
The first prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Mr. Michael Wetkas, told the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Tuesday that Saraki bought a property worth N375m in London in 2010 which he did not declare. Saraki is being prosecuted on 16 counts, including false and anticipatory asset declaration which he allegedly made when he was the governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2007. Wetkas said under cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr. Paul Usoro (SAN), that the Senate President neither declared the London property nor the liability of the loan in his asset declaration form submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau at the end of his second term as governor in 2011. Usoro disputed Count 11 of the charges, in which Saraki was accused of failing to declare his liability of N375m loan and the London property. Usoro said the Senate President was not bound to declare the N375m as his liability because as of the time he made his end of tenure asset declaration as governor on June 3, 2011 his debit balance was about N36m. But Wetkas said while it was true that that the debit balance on the account was N36m as of May 31, 2011, Saraki failed to declare the property he allegedly acquired in London with the loan. The witness said, “There are two issues. The issue of the loan and the issue of property he used the loan to buy in London. “Our position is that we are aware that the outstanding balance was not N375m but N36,042,202.04 as at that date. “But if that loan was taken for something else apart from property, we would not have made an issue out of it. But it was taken to buy a property. Our position is that, that property should have been declared in this asset declaration form of 2011. And if it was declared in the asset declaration form, the source of how the property was acquired would have been declared that the money was sourced through loan.” While fielding questions on the alleged anticipatory asset declaration by Saraki, the witness maintained that 5A and B McDonald Road , Ikoyi, Lagos, on assuming office as the Kwara State governor in 2003 was the same as 15 McDonald Road Ikoyi, Lagos. He said the Presidential Implementation Committee on the Sale of Federal Government’s Properties confirmed that it sold 15 McDonald Road, Ikoyi, to Saraki through the Senate President’s company, Tiny-Tee Limited, in 2006. But, the witness said Saraki claimed in his asset declaration form submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau on assumption of office in 2003 that he acquired 15A and B McDonald Ikoyi, Lagos, through Carlisle Properties Limited in 2006. He added, “I have always said it in my evidence about 15 McDonald Road, Ikoyi. We maintain our position that that property was one and the same property that the implementation committee wrote to us about. “The implementation committee did not tell us that there existed15 A and B separately. “The Managing Director of Carlisle Property, Mr. Izuagbe, also talked about 15 McDonald as the property belonging to the defendant (Saraki) and the defendant in the asset declaration which he made in 2011 and 2015, delcared the property as 15 McDonald Road, Ikoyi; he no longer said 15A and B. “That is why we maintained the same position that it is the same property. The nomenclature is just at convenience of the defendant.” The witness confirmed that the Certificate of Occupancy for the property at 15 McDonald Road, Ikoyi, was issued in the name of Tiny Tee Limited and not in Saraki’s name. On why he concluded that the property belonged to Saraki, Wetkas said that the asset at 15 McDonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, was paid for by Saraki through the bank accounts of two other companies which Saraki had declared its interest in. http://www.punchng.com/saraki-failed-declare-n375m-london-property-witness/ |
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized the passport belonging to a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode,The PUNCHhas learnt. The former minister, who served as the Director of Publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election, was arrested on Monday last week for receiving N840m. The money, which Fani-Kayode admitted to receiving, was said to have emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The ex-minister had, however, insisted that he did not know that the money emanated from the CBN because he was assured by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party that the money was sourced from private individuals. A spokesman for Fani-Kayode, Mr. Jude Ndukwe, confirmed to our correspondent that the ex-minister had submitted his passport to the EFCC. Ndukwe said the EFCC had given the ex-minister bail conditions but had refused to release him despite meeting the conditions. He said, “The EFCC gave him two bail conditions. The first condition was that he would hand over his passport while the second condition was for him to provide two sureties. The two sureties must be at least directors in the civil service and must have properties in AMAC (Abuja Municipal Area Council). “Five days after meeting the conditions, the EFCC has refused to release him.” In a related development, the EFCC has arrested a former Principal Private Secretary, to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Hassan Tukur. Tukur, it was learnt, was arrested by operatives of the EFCC in Abuja on Monday. It was, however, not clear as of press time, why the ex-aide was being detained. However, Tukur had been on the radar of the EFCC for several months over the alleged $15bn arms scam. He was said to have been given money to help negotiate a peace deal with Boko Haram during the Jonathan administration. Meanwhile, the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Ramalan Yero, has a guest of the EFCC for the last 48 hours where he is being quizzed for allegedly receiving N700m. Sources at the EFCC told our correspondent that Yero was being investigated for his alleged role in the $115m shared by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The money, which was handled by Fidelity Bank Plc, was said to have been used in bribing several officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election. A reliable source at the EFCC told our correspondent that Yero was still being grilled as of 8pm on Tuesday. The source said, “He was arrested after two officials of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kaduna State implicated him. We were told that he personally handled N700m during the election. However, he said all the money was distributed to party members during the election. “He is still in our Kano zonal office.” All attempts to speak with the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, proved abortive. http://www.punchng.com/efcc-seizes-fani-kayodes-passport-detains-ex-gov-yero/ |
