“Science Student” Video – Olamide Playing It Too Safe Or Trying Too Hard? Your Thoughts.

From the early signs and trends, it was easy to predict that 2018 would be seeing a lot from Olamide. While some artistes are still testing the waters, Olamide has already taken a deep dive with the release of a song which has become such a huge deal even though it is just as criticized, just as much as it is celebrated – the lyrical content of Olamide’s ‘Science Student’ has become a major talking point in the country such that it has caused a divide between listeners who think it promotes social vices like drug abuse, and others who comprehend the wordings of the song to subtly tell off drug abusing youths. The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) took sides with the former which led them to deem the song ‘unfit for broadcast’ but Olamide seems determined to prove the innocence of his song with the release of the video.

I was expecting a regular ‘street’ arrangement with happy scenes showing people come together to revel in the awesomeness of numbing substances like ‘weed’ but it was nice to see Olamide, with the help of Unlimited LA and his YBNL day-ones, pull a new trick on this one.

The video is an okay attempt at suspense-filled drama and Micheal Jackson-like choreographing of the trending Shaku Shaku dance, also taken by Olamide as a chance to prove that ‘say no to drugs’ is his original message on the song as against the perception of NBC and the association of social media critics, even though Olamide seemed to try t0o hard in the video, to convince his critics – repetitive scenes showing ‘say no to drugs’ and the caricature horror representations.

I like the idea that inspired the video, the newness and the attempt at ingenuity but for this song, something simpler and convincing like Reminisce’s ‘Ponmile’ video would have been apt. Olamide should have measured his attempt at convincing the NBC official who by the way, I doubt if they listen to some of the songs they ban.

Nice try Olamide, but it could have been simpler and yet electrifying.

The crossing from being up and coming to becoming an established act is usually tough, rough and tortuously long. For an artiste like Tekno whose time, talent and effort had been heavily invested in the exercise of taking a leap from the base, seeing his songs become such highly-sought material in the Industry like they were in 2016, must have brought a taste of fulfillment to his heart. I imagine that he had his moments of revel when he said to himself, ‘I made it against all odds.’

Infact, I remember that he publicly bragged about owning the biggest sounds in an industry where the likes of Wizkid and Davido are still very much active and more surprisingly, his statement was left unchallenged perhaps because there was a grain of truth in it. At the time he made the statement, he was just coming off the heels of an immensely successful year which saw his releases rank among the hottest pop properties on the continent.

Tekno’s fairly long streak of hit releases would have made even Wizkid turn green – Diana, Wash, Duro, Pana and the list goes on. There’s a certain level an artiste would get to that he/she would be confident enough to ask for suggestions of song title from the public – that’s the level of the greatest composers, those with the Midas touch, those with the rare ability to turn freestyles into classics. Tekno was in that realm. He was ‘freely’ dropping bangers like it was Christmas.

Interestingly, the Tekno fireworks continued even till the early periods of 2017 when he applied a portion of his magic in the production of Davido’s record breaking song, IF. More of his gift manifested on Rara, so when the topic of a Tekno album was mentioned, the loud beat of drums were rolled – ‘Teenage Dreams’ he called it and his fans spread the word – ‘a Tekno album is on its way, be prepared.’

But things started to fall apart for the self-acclaimed ‘Slim Daddy.’ His songs no longer got the usual wild buzz enjoyed by his previous offerings. Tekno went on a spree that saw him release 6 songs in about 11 months (1 song in 2 months) with the hope that he would strike gold with one but none of Yawa, Samantha, Go and his other releases of 2017 had the groundbreaking effect that Tekno needed to climb back to the realm he once dwelt in. He must have realized somewhere along the line that his problem has more to do with content rather than consistency.

So he made a last resort move to use the Wizkid factor to score a hit and wrap up 2017 on a high note but his attempt at creating a major inspiration piece like Ojuelegba, fell short of expectation. During a chat about Tekno and his failure on his promise to release an album last year, a respected music critic made a satiric statement. He said, ‘Tekno has dropped his album in 2016’, meaning that Tekno has put out his best materials in his year of rush.

His struggles are not limited to his musical releases, his stage performances too started to suffer from his dip in form. A friend of mine who saw him perform last year at the Jimmy Jump Off show in Lagos reported almost nothing good about Tek’s performance. I remember he said that it was so bad that at some point Tekno had to say to the audience, ‘if una no go dance, I go dance.’ It got even worse when his dirty linen was spread out on social media by Kenyans who slammed him for his poor outing at The Wave With Tekno event held in Nairobi late last year.

I’m not trying to rehash an old flame but during the epic Wizkid-Davido saga that coursed through the year 2017, one of the ways the not-so-avid fans of Davido could always go for his jugular was to attack his voice. So bad that Wizkid had to tweet one time about something in the sort of ‘even baba blue no fit cure frog voice’.

Away from all the gifting that is the indefatigable person of Davido, it is a clear point that a sonorous voice (going by standards and the technicalities of what actual good singing is), David is in absolute lack of. But how has he managed to make it, to succeed with utter relish, and to the envy of many, to keep afloat, and quite impressively too, as a singer, with that voice? These are a string of questions where applied reason continues to evade my attempt at proffering logical solutions to.

In quite recent times, the Nigerian music industry has defaulted in being a safe nest to foster the talents of those impeccably skilled in the vocal art. What then should an aspiring star make of his dream when he has to be told time over and again by his friends, producer, manager and music marketer that ‘Timi Dakolo no dey sell market’? As an industry, we keep having instances where true vocal talents bank on music reality show platforms to announce and recognize, but not exactly sell their craft; and otherwise leave them relegated to the confines of the church (choir), the karaoke bar (for the secular-minded) and friends. It is almost as if good singers never came out of the Nigerian music industry when you skim through the order of artistes buzzing the space currently.

Don’t forget o, this is the same industry where the symphonies of Tunde, Shifi and Zeal (Styl-Plus) thrived without manipulation; the same industry where the melodies of 2face, Faze and Blackface reigned supreme; the same industry that has produced astute vocal smiths in the persons of Segun Obe, Tosin Martins, Cohbams Asuquo, Timi Dakolo, Wande Coal, Banky W, Iyanya, Bez, Praiz, Tjan and few others that time won’t permit me to mention, even though the classes of ‘successful’ which they come, all vary in different orders. This however, is still the same industry.

This same industry has examples in the persons of Iyanya, Praiz and Chidinma (their common factor being that they are all products of show competitions) whose careers had to suffer a temporary setback that resulted from an attempt to switch-up their style because the market had pressured them to explore whimsical themes in their music. And in all these cases, the singing suffered. Iyanya had a song on his debut album Iyanya vs Desire titled ‘Somebody’ – it featured Tiwa Savage who was just cut fresh from jand at the time, and with all the energy in her contralto. The song was basically a subtle shade to vocal techniques in which Iyanya clearly stated was not the reason why we (Nigerians) are here. Of course this was after the big break that the ‘Kukere’ single had brought him in 2011 (we all know this story) – but that didn’t stop Mr Mbuk from breaking into a sweet-sounding and soulful vocal serenade, if he decided to. So when a 25-year-old kid called Davido with hardly a voice and the skill to go with bursts on the music scene and has since been roller-coasting upandan to the point of winning controversial titles and highly coveted awards, even bagging a Sony music deal that became the pivot for association with music greats the order of Mafikizolo, Nasty C, R.Kelly, Jay Sean, Cassper Nyovest, and now Sean Kingston and Tory Lanez, one has to wonder why. One has to wonder how.

Now I need you to understand that my expectation is not for David to not record his successes, nor is it for him to have a career experience that flukes out along the line and leaves him stuck in-between that point of limbo dividing fame from obscurity, no! Only that I find it crazy atimes – that is to/for those people who make bold, adjudging him a singer, like some folks do Wizkid too when he is being tagged a vocalist (although his is a pretty debatable point). Maybe David is not the typical, ideal definition of what a singer is or should be; may be his signature voice alternatively happens to not be the case in music considering it makes for a very terrible tone but inasmuch as the singer term connotes one who produces musical sounds using the voice and with a variety of vocal techniques, one cannot deny that it’s taken more than just a voice (or the absolute lack of it thereof) to make Davido this successful.

“If you are a lyricist I am your baba your papa, your dada.” With this line, on the track titled ‘Your Father’, M.I claimed for himself a title that has eluded him for most part of his successful career. Despite his many successes with album sales, critical acclaim and impact on the culture; M.I had remained underrated in the area of lyricism, especially by Nigerian music award organizers who have consistently snubbed him when awarding the best lyricist.

Since the award organizers have refused to see M.I Abaga as a first rate lyricist, he has decided to acknowledge and celebrate himself as the “father to Nigerian lyricists”. He has chosen to blow his own trumpet and he did that on his recently released project, a playlist titled ‘Rendezvous.’

Check the facts and if you choose, fictionalize it but Davido had a great year in 2017. In the year he scored the biggest hit on the African continent, bagged several accolades and witnessed the successes of his signee and cousin. He must have been indeed happy after seeing how great his December concert turned out to be.

2018 looks like it going to be a trying year for him because he would have to work harder not to fall behind. Interestingly, he has hit his stride already barely two months into the year. Numerous chart-topping collaborations already and he just put out his first official single of the year and it is buzzing everywhere. The visual to the song hit the internet some couple of days ago and it is already raking in maaaadd number of views.

Davido is a truly blessed man in the ‘Flora My Flawa’ video and you’d understand his musings for a forever-long kind of love, if you follow his social media activities. You’d come to understand that Chioma, his girlfriend, is the fire in his loins. A wealthy man cannot be happier than being with the woman he loves.

Davido loves that lady even more than he enjoys being the son of the wealthy Adeleke. He loves her more than he loves being OBO. You’d expect that a man with his level of success, wealth and popularity would be exposed to all sort of admirers who might turn to gossips or naysayers to threaten his relationship but Davido is saying his ‘Flora’ (or Chioma) has an unshakable trust in him which would sustain their love for long decades even when he’s no longer the youthful and energetic OBO.

Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) has become a powerhouse as far as labels in the Nigerian music industry, goes. The label which was birthed after Davido excused himself from the family gathering at HKN which produced mostly mediocre music, save for Davido’s offerings which, for most part of his stay there, were the label’s best products.

Davido went on to lay the foundation of his own label, DMW, signing on Mayorkun and Dremo in its threshold – acts which have turned out to be smart dealings especially in the case of the now ‘Mayor of Lagos.’

2017 was truly a special year for the team which saw Davido rise to peak of continental dominance while Mayorkun held it down as the one of brightest music talents on the continent. The label started the new year with positives and here is the review of their most recent release, Mind.

@ibironketweets I sincerely have no words of praise for any of the DMW acts for this song, neither do I have words of criticism for anyone in the team other than Dremo who is supposed to be a rapper and could have easily given this song what it is missing – a rapper’s touch. By singing, he made his contribution inessential, because he did the same thing as Davido and Mayorkun did. I can’t even tell the difference between Dremo and Peruzzi’s verse for instance.

In the end, the song is okay, it is quite buzzing now but in a couple of weeks from now, we’d have moved on from it.

@dahnielz It’s 2018 and the DMW boys are not sleeping on it. The label have had quite an amazing 2017 with only a couple of things to improve on.

For the song ‘Mind’, I must commend the delivery of the DMW boys on this song. Although, they probably stole one or two lines from Usher Raymond, one can’t help but appreciate their lyricism on the song. Davido, being the boss, blazed the trail and both Mayorkun & Dremo didn’t fall hand (still don’t know why Dremo didn’t rap on this record though). That being said, one person who stood out on this song is the new signee, Peruzzi who somehow switched the vibe on the song for his 30-second verse, good one.

We hope to get more from him in coming months and hopefully his sound would not be tweaked.

Very soon, Fresh will rise in the rank and become a force to reckon with in the industry. He provides a set of sounds that stays different from all others.

A DMW compilation album won’t be a bad idea too. Been a while since we had one of those.

Brother to Davido and head of HKN, Adewale Adeleke, has taken to Snapchat to call out a certain producer named ‘Kolo.’ In his post, Davido’s brother referred to the producer as a “f*cking dick rider”, who begs for money. He however made it clear that he would no longer give handouts to the said producer who he labelled a “f*cking old man.”

I’ve heard someone say ‘there’s a difference between underrated and hasn’t made it.’ It didn’t make much sense to me till the topic of Burna Boy came up. I mean, it’s hard to explain how an established artiste, whose brilliance is widely acknowledged, still struggles to get the rating he deserves.

Like when you interview a group of 10 music lovers and about 8 of them raves about Burna Boy but no one picks him as their fave. I’ve heard people say he is underrated. I’ve heard them refer to him as under-appreciated. I think a lot of people know enough about his brilliance, but they’d rather have his music as an alternative to their favourite pop sounds and I take this as a premise to imagine that we do not deserve him, if there’s even anything like that.

Burna Boy has always been an outlier, an artiste who defied the industry norms with his genre-establishing song, ‘Like To Party’. He came as a new intake with his own set of rules but from time to time his non-conformist character finds controversies for him. Today, he is seen as the sour-loser who walks out of award ceremonies, tomorrow he is in the news for sponsoring an attack on another colleague, but he usually wins back some portion of love and sympathy with his singing as he freely explores different genres to define his craft.

For Burna Boy, it’s been a hard struggle between character and talent. Sometimes I imagine that his mind hosts tug-of-war between angels and demons, leaving us with a bitter-sweet taste of his artistry. So on the ‘Outside’ album, I was hoping that more of his brilliance would manifest with little or no character blemish at all. The rush of Koni Baje, Sekkle Down, Streets of Africa as lead-ins, got me all skeptical & shii but the release of the Lily Allen-assisted Heaven’s Gate held promise of a coming sensation even though I still heard someone refer to him as “by-force by-force Fela.”

Outside dropped as scheduled and although More Life is the first track on the album track list, PH City Vibration sets it off for me, with a reflective mood. Listening to Burna Boy sing about his origin, his formative experiences and the influence of the oil-rich city, made me feel like I knew all about him but it was on Where I’m From that he really embraced his PH-boy identity as he sings about how the ‘glocs’ and police raids made him tougher than “steel and copper.” He might have left an explanation on why he appears like a daredevil when he said ‘where me come from make you turn animal.’

Ye woke the ‘Oluwa Burna’ that bears the title ‘master of vibe’. On the song he sings about his drive and ambition. The song carries a get-it-at-all-cost theme and Oluwa Burna took a cut from Fela’s Sorrow, Tears & Blood to drive his point home. It’s a song for the dream chasers, the hustlers, the ‘woke ones’. He keeps the vibe alive on Giddem but instead of singing about the hustle, he is in the mood to showoff to the girl(s) but the line, ‘remember nothing for this life na accidental,’ left an impression on me.

The album takes different shades on tracks like Rock Your Body and Calm Down, Burna Boy seems to be pouring his mind but it requires an extra effort to understand him. On ‘Calm Down’ he sings about his fears and struggles but ‘Rock Your Body’ is a let-loose party jam. The album, Outside gets a fitting curtain-closer with the song, Outside on which Burna Boy leaves you, his listener, a friendly-advice to “watch how you move outside.”

It’s hard to place the Outside album under one genre class because of the high degree of diversity injected in the album. It is only fitting to call it alternative music since it’s different from what is commonly heard around here, even though it carries a pervasive blend of Reggae, dance hall and soulful music. Burna Boy doesn’t even seem like he wants to be bothered about genre. He just wants to channel his emotions to make songs and turn his feelings as the raw material for making vibe. That’s why I’d understand if someone calls Burna Boy’s music, “vibe music” because vibe isn’t restricted to language, sound or lyrics. It’s just music and that’s what Burna Boy achieved on this album. He made good music that makes him fulfilled and he hopes you’d enjoy it and even if you don’t – you’d be fine.

The Outside album could easily have been presented as the ‘Sound From The Other (African) Side’, at least it tells more of the realities of the life of an African man than SFTOS did. I expect the album to receive critical acclaim but the commercial reception of the album might still have to bow to the jinx (for the same reason Nigerians would rather purchase SFTOS than the almost perfect Simisola album). I’m proud of Burna Boy and I now have a response for the guy who referred to him as “by-force by-force Fela.” My response would be something like Chimamanda Adiche’s response to the French journalist who recently asked if there are bookshops in Nigeria – *sighs

Specially treated, is how Nigerians handle Kiss Daniel. We love him so much that we accept every of his offerings with love and cheerfulness whether it’s a love song, a party jam or a 90s inspired tune. Kiss Daniel belongs to the rare species of artistes that can be considered “can-do-no-wrong.” He is the darling of the Nigerian music industry and that’s why he received mass sympathy in his legal battle with former label, G-Worldwide. But despite the troubled situation, he manages to release a starter for the year in the form of 4Dayz .

@dahnielz After playing around sultry lyrics on two of his 3 previous singles, Vado is back at singing love songs, which undoubtedly is what he knows how to do best. ‘4Dayz’, is a well-timed song. Love is certainly is in the air now and Boy Kiss is not dulling the season. Looking at Daniel’s delivery, one thing has changed; this is a singer who is experiencing freedom, creatively speaking.

Kiss Daniel has now worked with 3 different producers since he became an independent artiste. Could this have contributed to the improvement on his sound? Absolutely!

However, the singer needs to know that he is under scrutiny and will be judged objectively based on his offerings. For someone who has a lot to prove, Kiss Daniel is not doing bad so far.

Big ups to Runtinz for keeping it 100 on this as well.

Not exactly his best, but it’s still a decent record.

Is Burna Boy talented?

Asking this question feels like crossing a river to get water. It’s a fact that we all know; even the spirikokos, if it were a heaven or hell type of question, would acknowledge that Burna Boy’s music stands out from the ordinary.

So instead, I put up an opinion poll on the TooXclusive website asking what feels like a more engaging question – “Burna Boy or Wizkid…Who Is More Talented?’

Even I that asked the question had to do a double take to be sure that it is Nigerians and not aliens that are actually acknowledging the abundance of Burna Boy’s talent, even to the point of rating him ahead of the can-do-no-wrong Wizkid on the scale of talent deposit. Wonders will never cease o, so Naija people know just how amazing the guy called Burna is, but they’d still not come all out for him like they do for the likes of Wiz and Davido.

So why is he so slept on, or is it a thing of character? I wouldn’t know for sure but I need no one to tell me that walking out of award ceremonies and sponsoring a robbery attack on another singer aren’t exactly reports that endear you to the fans. These are some of the acts that has soiled Burna Boy’s name overtime and maybe it explains why his music suffers in the area of listenership. But the ‘bad boy’ rep cannot be the reason his following doesn’t match the size of his talent. Some of the artistes we even refer to as A-listers, the ones with bulky following, have their fair share of controversies and wahala too.

Burna Boy, they say, is a hot spur whose hyper-masculinity causes his abundant talent go to waste, but really, a lot of his troubles are mere consequences of his nonconformist character. I mean, this dude wasn’t just different in musical samples and vocal styling, he rocked the essence of uniqueness and made it look hella cool while at it. Or perhaps, may be it was too soon to tell.

Then ‘Godwin’ happened. A traditional pop sound embellished with the intermittent kicks from an Afro-house beat; of course, with the incredibly inducing and sonorous backing vocals of the man Jazzy. My gaaddd!!! It was the year 2015 and we had suddenly happened upon a potential megastar in the order of a Lil Kesh from the Shoki era of 2013; he was literally on our hands, and right on the threshold of breaking forth. The dramatic commercial reception of the earth-shaking single, was what further cemented without doubt, his popular moniker coined from the jocular lyrics on his Dorobucci verse where he sang ‘doro-mega-super-star’.

A lot of people still hold grudges against the organizers of Headies for crowning Reekado Banks as the winner of the 2015 Next Rated award. Their decision to give away the highly coveted prize to the Mavin star is still considered one of the most controversial decisions we have witnessed in the Nigerian music industry.

Some believe it was a steal, others agreed that it was duly awarded. The debate caused a serious divide in the circle of fans and at that time, the material to be judged was limited. The general conclusion was that since The Headies Next Rated Award is a pointer to the rise of a future star, then, time would give the best verdict on which of the nominees would go on to become the bigger star in the future.

The award was only a prediction at that time, what we have today is a revelation. Both Lil Kesh and Reekado carried on from the incident, they have both dropped their debut albums, the Mavin star has become a big man, Lil Kesh is now a label head. Time has been kind to give us events and happenings to make a good case of who between the two has his head and shoulder above the other.

Let’s Tell You What The Big ‘Problem’ Is With Reminisce’s New Song

2017 is remembered as the year Reminisce flexed his muscle of versatility for Nigerians to see. The celebrated indigenous rapper took a turn in the direction of alternative music and he returned offering Ponmile, a song which earned him glowing plaudits.

He chose to kick off the new year with the release of a track titled “Problem.” The song is coming at a time in the industry when the shaku shaku wave is fiercely sweeping across the length and breadth of the industry. The big boys have been taking turns to vibe on it, those in the grassroots are hawking it. Reminisce, who is somewhere in between the two classes, experimented on the sound to produce Problem.

The Nigerian music industry is an industry of few pace
setters and multitude of followers of trends. Not many
artistes dig deep to come up with new elements of
advantage in an industry where music is the common
product.

Only a rare specie of artistes spice up their music
with elements such as dance moves, catch phrases/
slangs and uniqueness of sound; to deliver their music as
a package full of entertainment.

This extra spice effect is what the shaku shaku dance
gives to a lot of songs being released in the industry
today.

It almost feels like artistes are using the shaku shaku template to create their songs. It is the new trend and it has been so since the later part of 2017, around the time Real Self’s Legbegbe was starting to buzz on the streets. The song was the industry’s traceable first
contact with the Shaku Shaku dance.

Around the same time, Olamide put out his infectious
song, Wo! , along with a dance challenge. The sound, the
lyrics and the feel of the song seems to be tailored to fit
the ‘new dance.’ It was only natural for the submissions
for the ‘Wo Challenge’ to have all sorts of Shaku Shakus.
A number of these submissions featured in the official video and the standout dancers got a chance to publicize the new dance in the video and that’s the story of how Shaku Shaku became a dance trend in the industry.
