Ngozi123: Only Ondo Yorubas traditionally ate egusi soup among the Yoruba. That's what I've been told by your fellow Yorubas on Nairaland any time I bring up the fact that it's an Igbo dish.
I have reasons to doubt your statement that my fellow Yorubas told you that; because no Yoruba in his right senses will ever say that. Maybe it was one of your comrades who love masquerading as Yoruba that told you that. It's not Egusi. It's Egunsi. The etymology of the word was rightly provided but your bruised ego would not allow you to learn.
Afonja44: Lol Ever heard of Jaja of Opobo (1821-1891)?
The richest man in the entire British-Nigeria, so rich and powerful that he was taxing British traders, enrolled his children in UK schools and employed British teachers in his Opobo school
He was Nigeria's first exporter, shipping palm oil directly to the UK from here. The British crown had to personally assaasinate him.
cr7lomo: Always chest beating... u guys can't live without thinking Igbo ... Igbos are not competing with u guys cos they know they are better...na una de kill una sef wey Igbo man de
Na una people de start am naah. Reno talked about Aso Oke and Egunsi and you people went ballistics. 😝😝😝😝😝🤡
Thank you for your feedback. Actually, Egusi is not an Igbo word, and it is not Egwusi. It would help if you understood that I have travelled to almost everywhere in the world where Lukumi Yoruba and Igbo are spoken. I am not just engaging in guess work. Name the country, I have been there. I can show you ticket stubs, passport stamps, and photographs.
I do not go there for tourism. I went for research. Did you not see my documentary in Tobago, where I taught them the Igbo and Efik origins of their patios? For example, they call witchcraft Obeah, which is gotten from Dibia. They refer to their music as Calypso, which is derived from the Efik word Kaiso, meaning move forward, because that is what Calypso is: Dancing by moving forward.
I study etymology, which is the study of the origin and evolution of words.
Egusi is a Lukumi Yoruba word that evolved from the phrase È gun si, which means grind or pound it in in English. The word for grind or pound in Yoruba is gun.
In the olden days, the Lukumi had mortars, sometimes known as odo, with which they ground the melon that is the main component of the soup.
The word's literal meaning is to grind or pound it and put it in the pot.
That is how you know the origin of words. Etymology is almost as precise as science. It is through the study of etymology that researchers were able to break down the origin and meaning of the words Akara and Akamu.
Akara or Acara means 'I count' (Aka or Aca), and then 'I buy' (ra).
It is short for Acarajé, which is the name the Yoruba Lukumi in Brazil still call it. Acarajé literally means 'I count' (Aka or Aca), 'I buy' (ra), and 'I eat' (je), hence the name Acarajé!
Nigeria's Lukumi (Yoruba) just shortened Acarajé as they shortened Omo-ti-Olu Iwa-bi to Omoluabi and Olofin-Orun (Lord of the Heavens) to Olorun.
Likewise, Akamu or Acamu simply means 'I count' (Aka or Aca) and 'I drink' (Mu). The reason is that Akamu used to be sold in cups.
Some non-Lukumi people who settle in the Southwest and are from other parts of Nigeria often conflate Ogi with Akamu. Actually, they are different things. The Lukumi word for corn is Agbado.
When Agbado is milled and fermented in water, it is called Ogi by the Lukumi. When Ogi is made into a pap by boiling it with water, it is known as Akamu. When Akamu solidifies and is cut into solid blocks, traditionally wrapped in Banana leaf, it is referred to as Eko.
If you ask an Igbo speaker to break down Egusi, Akara, and Akamu etymologically, they will be unable to because they are not Igbo words.
The reason you have a good number of Lukumi words in Igbo is because the first book in the Igbo language, which was a dictionary, was written by a Lukumi man named Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther. It is titled Isoama-Ibo: A Primer, published in 1857. Bishop Crowther introduced several Lukumi words into the Igbo language.
Thanks again, and may God bless you.

Dear Ebube,
Thank you for your feedback. But how can this make sense to you? You initially said Egusi was an Igbo word, and I showed you documentary evidence from 1913 proving that Egusi is a Lukumi word. Now, you are forced to admit that the word is Lukumi, but you are introducing a new claim that only the soup is Igbo. How does that even sound to you?
You, Ebube, can you give birth to a child whose name you do not know, yet your neighbour knows the name of the child? Come on, Ebube, let us not act as if our brains are for decoration.
Thanks again, and may God bless you.

Reno, have mercy on this people naah. This is getting too much naah.😝😝😝
LivingSage: I was asked a question about the origin of the word Egusi by a Nigerian of Southeast origin. After my innocent response, I have received a barrage of insults, abuses and threats.
Please find attached an entry from the book Dictionary Of The Yoruba Language: English-Yoruba, Yoruba-English. This a 1913 edition of the book previously published in the Nineteenth Century by the Church Mission Society, an agency of the Church of England.
The book is also available online, from where I got this page.
Please find the word Egusi highlighted in red. I vow to pay ₦10 million to those who have been insulting me if they can show me an Igbo dictionary predating this book, which has an entry for the word 'Egusi' or 'Egwusi'.
The Igbo lexicon contains many Lukumi words in Igbo because the first book in the Igbo language, which incidentally was a dictionary, was written by a Lukumi man named Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther. It is titled Isoama-Ibo: A Primer, published in 1857. Bishop Crowther introduced several Lukumi words into the Igbo language.
Answering a question posed to me on the origin of the word Egusi does not mean that I hate Igbo. History is history. It does not love or hate anyone.
Truth is hate only to those who hate truth.
My documentary on the Igbo origin of Tobagan patois spoken in Tobago was aired on television. Can a man make a documentary to validate a people he hates?
Thanks again, and may God bless you.

These people don suffer. Reno has seriously bruised their egos.
Ofodirinwa: Igbo Chieftancy hats can be any hat the culture chooses and has changed a lot through out history from a white cap (still used in Aro Chukwu) to imported military hats (still used in Kalabari by the IGBO royal family), to the Okpu Agu which started in the 1700s to the red cap which was first used in Onitsha. The hat is not what is important, it's the man wearing it.
All fabrics are used for furniture, very stupid comment by Omokri
There is nothing like Igbo royal family. There was no royalty in Igbo forests before. It's a recent phenomenon. Always have an open mind to learn. We know it hurts but you still have to learn.
chidiokay: if you opine we can't take the problem from the middle then you should in the same light make it about one region
IF you are privy of "reality you will know the issue of badgovernance is a national issue, there is no region you point to in Nigeria today that does not have its own "bountiful share of bad governance ...
I dont understand how caging the North spells good for Nigeria, is that why we elected Tinubu .. take on the north
Pre -Tinubu, Nigeria was a mess and he BAT knows the job he took, how about he takes on
1. Insecurity ravaging farm lands 2. naira free fall 3. hyper inflation eroding purchasing power 4. Cabals in oil sector
Thats where the dividend of democracy lies not sliding tackles with north. abeggi
Which region in Nigeria is deliberately responsible for at least 3 of the problems you just highlighted? Tell me.
chidiokay: OGA drop all these big grammar and fake accent lets go straight to fact
while Atiku was vice president, long existed almajaris were the only beggars to worry about
BUT today under Tinubu , are southerners not fast becoming "Almajaris ... even workers have now turned beggy beggy to survive
Atiku might not be a saint but back in his administration, those almajaris kids stand a better chance to feed nd save up for empowerment
But today under Tinubu, even workers can barely eat standard meal, what chance does almajari children stand when people cant chop remain now .. these are the real issues
You said northern leaders and parent failed those kids, we that parent did not fail nko ... how many workers can afford chicken from 17th of the month, even with an income is Tpain making life any easy
The issue needs to be addressed holistically. You cannot just take the problem from the middle. The Northern elites, religious leaders and politicians have neglected and raped their people for decades, using them as tools to perpetrate religious and political violence. They're the ones who started this whole problem. They were the ones who bought arms for these youths because they wanted to fight OBJ and GEJ. Especially, GEJ. The federal government inherited all this mess. But it will require a certain level of high handedness by the government to prove a point to these political vampires that they can be caged. It has always been a fact that leaders of Southern extract always say away from dealing with the North decisively. But it seems Tinubu is ready to take them head on. And he has been successful so far.
Nigerianization: If you read what you wrote, you'll see that you're the senseless one. I am not in Asiwaju 's camp and certainly not an ass licker. If Jonathan was this bold, he would have finished his tenure peacefully. The same north you are afraid of will align. You hear North and think it's the people, instead of understanding that it's the political leadership. Asiwaju has them where he wants them. So relax
That man will deal with all of those Northern elites one by one of they cross him. You hear pim from Buhari??
Legal counsel to the Federal government in the arraignment of 67 minors accused of participating in the End Bad Governance protest, Rimazonte Ezekiel, has come out to dismiss claims that the accused persons are minors and should not have been arraigned.
While speaking to newsmen after their arraignment, Rimazonte said contrary to public opinion, the 67 accused are not minors but “adults and that most of them are married.”
I think the North cannot handle Tinubu like they thought. That man will crush any riot or insurrection by Northerners. He is ready to demystifying the elites and their willing tools in the North. A lot of them have lost money and bank accounts and they dare not come out in the open.
franchasng: Yorubas are the only Nigerian tribe that have full idol worshipping as a religion, the ifa worshippers.
Christians - 30% Moslems - 35% Ifa worshippers - 20% Atheist - 9% Other religions - 6%
At least they don't have public Christians with private shrines. It's either they are Christians or otherwise. Not professing Christ but bowing to shrines in their compound.
themanderon: Did the protesters commit any crime or when has it become a crime to protest?
That wasn't a protest. That was an insurrection. If you had to pay billions to galvanize people to protest, then it's no longer a protest. It's an act to subvert a government. If you were the president, would you siddon look?
sweetjohn: Anything to end bad government, corruption, criminals from entering political offices esp presidential, certificateless candidates and illiterates is highly welcome.
If it's true, God bless the donators. They are indeed patriotic Nigerians who want Nigeria to be great.
Says an unpatriotic saboteur. That money could have been used for better things for the masses. Don't you see that the money was eventually a waste? We know it was Northern elites who thought they could bring Tinubu down behind the protest. But they failed.
