Although the mosquito is undeniably one of the world’s most despised insects that has long been blamed for spreading malaria that kills millions of people each year, a Professor of Entomology at the University of Ilorin, Adeolu Taiwo Ande, has said that killing mosquitoes is bad, because “they are ‘friends’ that “deserve to be properly managed”. Prof. Ande made this submission last Thursday (June 1, 2017) while delivering the 169th Inaugural Lecture of the University, entitled “Consider the ways of ‘Ants’ and be Wise.” The Entomologist, who described insects as the “most successful and influential group of organisms in the biosphere”, noted that humans have a lot to learn from them in order “to get wise.” Dwelling extensively on three of such insects- Mọ̀nímọ̀ní (Cirinaforda), mosquitoes and the honey bees, the Inaugural Lecturer observed that “human life is beset with inevitable associations with insects that have over the years influenced human destiny positively and negatively”. According to him, “negative influences, such as disease transmission, crop losses, food spoilage, economic losses and nuisance value caused by less than 5% of insect species have been exaggerated by man, while the more extensive positive influences of insects which include pollination of flowers, waste recycling, ecosystem sustenance activities, use as source of silk, shellac, cochineal, therapeutic agents, aesthetics, biological control agents and food source are however unappreciated and down-played”. Prof. Ande opined that man “deliberately misconstrues mosquitoes’ role and frequently describes them as causing the diseases they transmit: a case of calling a dog a bad name to nail it, when in the actual sense, the mosquitoes are equally sick but inadvertently and unwillingly convey pathogens that are the real causal agents of these diseases.” According to the don, the female mosquito could be “described as an example of a true mother (Abiamo tooto)” who “is forced to undertake a ‘suicide mission’ in its bid to provide for its unborn children.” He explained that “adult female mosquitoes have exceptional value for child raising hence the level of commitment and risk they take on the mission that entails a decision between life and death.” “The after effect of this commitment is a well thought-out plan that forestalls most of the factors may stand in the way of raising good children. I am sure most human females will not take comparable decision in the face of similar attendant risks. It is however certain that children born after well thought out and risky conditions are better posited for quality living than those produced carelessly.” “For the human race to improve, our dear ladies must view child bearing as a serious business that requires fortified planning aimed at providing and ensuring quality living and survival of our offspring. This will drastically reduce the incidences of unwanted pregnancies, street children and will surely checkmate population explosion constructively” he said. Prof. Ande explained that “mosquitoes have proved to us over the years that they are our friends and allies and whether we like them or not they will exist and continue to source blood from us”, adding that “unfortunately, our lack of understanding and intolerance has been largely responsible for the use of ungodly methods to handle them”. According to him, the wise way out is to get more friendly with them and use ecologically compatible methods against them. “My advice is stop killing mosquitoes; they are friends and they deserve to be properly managed”, he added. The Entomologist pointed out that the honey bees “sting as a last resort because it has a cost that is ultimate, i.e. the demise of the stinger; thus it is a suicidal mission but for a good purpose which is the survival or protection of the colony thereafter”. Noting that “humans, having discovered the goodness of honey, have resorted to the use of smoke and fire (arson) to prosecute forceful harvest, hence committing an action comparable to an armed robbery exercise”, Prof. Ande stated that “this practice over the decades has affected the quality and quantity of honey available and the life system of the ecosystem adversely, as the bee’s role in pollination has been heavily compromised. The don suggested that to forestall these drawbacks, honey bee farming (Apiculture) should be encouraged”, “as it will improve honey quality and production, provide job opportunities, enhance bee presence in the ecosystem, enhance pollination, and improve crop production: all of which are highly desirable and required qualities for our ailing ecosystem.” Blaming Zoologists for the relegation of the discipline in contemporary times, a situation which he said, had affected “the quality of students, young lecturers and the entire educational system of our nation”, the scholar called for the establishment of an insect museum in Unilorin “to curate insect species in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria.” Source - https://schooling.ng/mosquitoes-friends-stop-killing-unilorin-don/ According to him, “As Africans and indeed Nigerian Biologists and Naturalists, it is an unpardonable disservice to be oblivious of the identity and record of our animals, only to fall back on our colonial masters 50 years after independence. At the very least and as a matter of urgency we need to establish a Nigerian museum that correctly identifies and stocks Nigerian insects. Biologists should also note that strange specimens should never be assumed to be new until after confirming with international museums.” Prof. Ande called for the improvement of the Zoology curriculum to ensure better focus on organisms that feature prominently around us, as well as the promotion of practical classes that ‘enable the demonstration of zoological techniques, diagrammatic expression which Zoology is renowned for…’ The don, who also commended the University management for establishing the Unilorin Zoo, however remarked that, “Zoologists are expected to be the foster ‘parents’ of the animals in the Zoo and should be familiar with their needs and their health status. Committing the Zoo to veterinary doctors is like a parent (Zoologist) yielding over his children to family doctor for their welfare.” |
The attention of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), Nigeria has been drawn to a recent job advertisement by the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) published in the Daily Trust newspaper on Monday, 22 May 2017, The advert listed sixteen categories of individuals that are excluded from applying for the job advertisement. As a Professional body that is charged with the regulation and advancement of the practice of Human Resource Management in Nigeria, we find unacceptable, any recruitment process that is discriminatory. It is even more distasteful where factors like medical challenges, deformity, impairment or pregnancy are listed as disability and bases for exclusion. No Nigerian, who is willing and capable of working, should be denied an opportunity to apply for any job that he/she is qualified for. The Institute strongly condemns this act and is therefore handling this matter directly with the agency concerned. The Institute would like to encourage all hiring organizations, whether public or private, to always respect diversity, avoid discrimination and ensure a transparent and competitive recruitment process for all candidates. All CIPM members are also required to influence and guide their organisations to do the right thing at all times, especially, in promoting good labour/best practices in HR. You will be kept informed of progress made on the matter. Ethiopia has shut off internet access to its citizens, according to reports from inside the country, apparently due leaked exam papers for the nation’s grade 10 examinations. Social media users noted that the internet service was interrupted from around 7 pm on Tuesday—reportedly to prevent exam leaks. About 1.2 million students are taking the grade 10 national exams, with another 288,000 preparing for the grade 12 university entrance exams that will take place next week. Sources in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa told Quartz the internet was reinstituted on Wednesday morning after more than a 12-hour shutdown. Others, however, said that the connection was still being interrupted, and was going on and off. “No connection at all. Everything was blocked,” Biniam Alemayehu said. Alemayehu told Quartz that his 4G phone connection didn’t start working until 9.30 am. Algeria’s government also took similar steps to Ethiopia’s in June 2016, when it blocked social media networks in order to fight cheating in secondary school exams. The Federal Government has declared Monday, May 29 as Public Holiday to celebrate the 2017 Democracy Day. The Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), made the declaration in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. The minister congratulated Nigerians for witnessing yet another Democracy Day, marking the second year anniversary of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. Dambazau assured Nigerians of government’s continued efforts at achieving its three main targets of guaranteeing security, revitalising the economy and tackling corruption. “While a lot has been achieved in the areas of security, particularly in the North-East, and in tackling corruption, recent statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics have shown tremendous improvement of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “No doubt, the nation is closer to getting out of recession, particularly with the recently inaugurated Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which seeks to revitalise the nation’s economy soonest. “Following the recently signed Executive Orders on Ease of Doing Business, we have opened our doors wider for both domestic and foreign investors,” said Dambazau. He wished all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebration and enjoined them to join hands with the government in building a peaceful and enduring democratic legacy. Source - https://schooling.ng |
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lagos State has partnered with the Ministry of Health to ensure the 2017 orientation camp slated for today is free from the spread of Cerebra-spinal Meningitis (CSM) disease. The NYSC State Coordinator, Lagos, Prince Mohammed Momoh who disclosed this to journalists at their corporate office Surulere said that the scheme had already sensitised prospective corps members to get vaccinated against the spread of the Cerebra-spinal Meningitis (CSM) disease. "Beyond the Lagos State Secretariat, the NYSC is also working with the Ministry of Health to ensure that corps member who has not been vaccinated before coming to camp are attended to," he said. He maintained that the NYSC had attained about 95 per cent preparedness and set to receive corps members and commence the orientation exercise today. Momoh who also disclosed that the State was making provision for adequate care for nursing mothers and pregnant corps members to guarantee their safety added, "no one in this category will be allowed to stay beyond six hours on arrival at the regimented camp." Among other things put in place said Momoh, was to ensure that corps member who has received camp and post camp SAED training will benefit from a start-up capital in partnership between NYSC and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund. . The various measures already in place to play host to the thousands of corps members in camp today. while Momoh showered praises on the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for his untiring support for the scheme in the state, he pointed out that the different provisions by the state have sustained the scheme over the years. He, therefore said that the NYSC camp at the Iyana-Ipaja is in good shape and ready for yet another successful orientation exercise. Speaking of the three-week orientation exercise, the coordinator assured that the period will not be devoid of the traditional drills, skill acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), lectures, sports, and language studies. He assured that corps members deployed to the state will enjoy the expertise of seasoned professionals to ensure that they are adequately prepared for the service year. Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, have blocked the main entrance to Osun Government House, Oke-Fia, in continuation of their protest against non-payment of their lecturers, the development that has paralysed academic activities in the school. LAUTECH Students Protest At Govt House To Celebrate Aregbesola's Birthday The protesters, who blocked some major roads within Osogbo, the state capital, in protest, on Wednesday, in defiance to high security presence, had laid siege on the entrance to Oke-Fia Govt House, in apparent move to stop Governor Aregbesola from attending an event organised to mark his birthday holding within the state capital Thursday morning. The protesting students had halted vehicular movement on Osogbo/Ifon/Ogbomoso road, as many early travellers are trapped in the traffic gridlock. The correspondent gathered that heavily armed policemen manning the Armoured Personnel Carrier, are right at the scene of the protest. The Deputy Governor Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori’s efforts to address the students was earlier refuted, but was later made possible with the intervention of the commissioner of police in the state, Fimihan Adeoye, who prevailed on the students to allow her speak. Mrs Laoye-Tomori while appealing to the students, assured them that efforts were being made to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis between the two owner states of Oyo and Osun, and the striking lecturers. She disclosed that a meeting will be held by house committees on educations of the two states and all concerns with a view to ending the strike. We are looking at reports from across centres and acting on them, and if we notice any infractions, we shall have such candidates’ result withdrawn. ‘If you notice, you will realise that the trend in terms of scores were on the average, most candidates scored between 180 and 220 which to me, is a true picture of their performances’ It used the mock test as a spring board and it seemed to have paid off. Though complaints trailed the mock exam, it has been praises all the way for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the way it conducted the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Examination (UTME). The exam was written nationwide between May 13 and 20. Many candidates, parents and stakeholders are praising JAMB for overcoming what they called the embarrassment of the mock computer based test (CBT). JAMB has been walking with its head held high since the conclusion of the main exam last weekend. Its Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said the board should not be blamed for such hitches as irregular power supply, lateness in take-off time and malfunctioning computer. Speaking with reporters during a visit to some of the centres in Lagos, Oloyede said the board is considering abandoning the fingerprint for a better innovation. He refered to some Nigerians as “criminally fraudulent” for using varying ways to circumvent the system. “We discovered that about 70 per centre of the private CBT centres engaged in fraud; but as they tried to beat us, we were there before them. We have seen many people you would call eminent Nigerians who are school owners, centre owners and some even with Ph.D engaging in fraudulent practices. It is shocking and embarrassing too but JAMB is ahead of them.” Beginning from next session, Oloyede said the board would come up with stringent measures for would-be JAMB accredited centres so as to separate the wheat from the chaff. ‘’We shall withdraw results and prosecute offenders,’’ he said The board’s information officer Fabian Benjamin, said the body has since begun the monitoring of closed Circuit Television (CCTV) at centres nationwide to detect infractions by candidates, adding that the process would be ongoing. “We have already commenced the CCTV monitoring and is an ongoing thing,” Fabian told our reporter on phone on Tuesday. “We are looking at reports from across centres and acting on them, and if we notice any infractions, we shall have such candidates’ result withdrawn. “We are so committed to this such that even if the candidate is already in 200-Level in the university, we shall withdraw the result and also direct the university to withdraw his result and admission.” Fabian said the system was configured in such a manner that even when a candidate’s computer shuts down in the process of writing the exam, the two hours allocated period still remains intact and the candidate can continue after the system is restored. He said the board has begun some legal proceedings against candidates across states. Candidates react Unlike in the past, many candidates praised the board for a job well done. A candidate, Abdulraheem Olubukola Oladokun who wrote CBT at Aire-Max Computer Institute beside Mother Theresa Catholic Church, Masalla, Niger State on May18, said except the alteration in commencement time, the system was hitch-free. “We were scheduled to begin at 9 am, but somehow it turned out to be 11am,” Oladokun recalled. “Everything was in line with JAMB protocol. No system went off to the best of my knowledge. At 1pm, I was done. On Friday, I got my scores-Maths:73; English 75; Economics 60; and Government 69; and it is just how I expected it to be,” he said happily. Another candidate Bakan Ishaku Robo, spoke of her challenges. “My centre was Thaddeus Science Academy, Madakiya, Kafanchan in Kaduna State,” Robo began “I am not happy with the examination body because I encountered a serious challenge with my system while the time was going. The time left after my system was fixed was not up to an hour. I had to rush without focus to finish my examination, I wished JAMB would consider those of us who wrote on (Saturday) May 13 and give us another examination to write.” But, Bisola Ayuba and Yetunde Bisoye did not experience challenges at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH). “The exam went well. I don’t think I heard or saw any inconveniences. The hall was okay, the computers functioned well too,” said Ayuba. “I have been coming to this centre even before today (Friday) that I wrote, I didn’t notice any complaint of any sort. In truth, JAMB tried this year,” Bisoye said. However, things appeared to be different in Benue State. According to our reporter, the Board approved 11 CBT centres across the three senatorial zones. Of all the centers The Nation visited, only candidates at the Benue State University (BSU) campus had smooth sail. Almost all the candidates who spoke to The Nation scored BSU – CBT centre as the best. They also described the sitting arrangement and the air-conditioned hall that accommodated over 170 computers as perfect and excellent for such examination. The BSU – CBT Centre Manager, Paul- Ben Ajene, told The Nation that besides the 170 computers, there was also provision for 10 other computers reserved for any emergency, if any computer developed fault during examination. Ajene noted that all the computers worked well throughout the examination. Like in other centres nationwide, Ajene said Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were on standby to prevent security breach. It was a different story at Gboko College of Education in Gboko, Benue north west senatorial zone, as JAMB officials shut down the CBT centre and relocated all the candidates to another one . The centre Manager, Francis Ofoumah, told The Nation that all the 150 computers packed up midway into the examination. All attempts to restart them failed. Ofoumah said because of the tension and pressure from the candidates and the need to save time and cost the exam was moved to another centre. Ajima Patience, a candidate in the area, did not find her experience funny at all. Hear her: “I wrote my exam on May16. It was hell! We were supposed to start by 9am and my centre was supposed to be one of the halls within the College of Education Gboko Benue State. But there was a problem with the system. We were moved to another centre at Calvary Arrows, Peace House in Gboko. To cut the story short, we started the exam by 6.30pm and ended by 8.30pm. Due to the stress, I felt sick in the hall and I did not even know what I was choosing as answers again. I pray I should make this year’s JAMB by God’s grace. I also pray that JAMB should have mercy on us and add more mark for us for the exam.” Except for the limited number of computers which dragged candidates’ time, there was no ugly incident in Otukpo and Oju CBT centres in Benue south. Bolanle Ogunwemimo, who wrote at the Digital Bridge Institute in Cappa, Oshodi, said: “This year’s JAMB is more appealing. I thought the issues we faced trying to write the Mock exam will surface again but JAMB did well. The computer I used was okay, the network too was awesome.” Another candidate at the same centre Bayo Babatunde said: “I was impressed seeing that I did not experience any hitches. I praise JAMB for that. At least you are only faced with answering the questions correctly and not having any additional issues with the computer not functioning well. What parents say A parent Mrs Josephine Madu said: “JAMB has tried this year. At least it deserves a pass mark. It is not about occupying a position but making sure you address challenges well enough so that in the end your work speaks louder for you. To that effect, I look forward to seeing more advancement in the management of this exam. “There are still challenges not just during the exam but starting from the registration process. I could recall a lot of students had issues trying to register for the exam. This needs to be addressed too. I am sure this improvement in the conduct of the exam was as a result of the experience they had during that mock exam which they eventually cancelled. I encourage JAMB not to relent, they should strive to have a hitch-free examination yearly because I believe we can get it right.” Another parent who is a teacher in a public school in Lagos, Mrs Ola Erinfolami, said scores this year truly reflected candidates’ performances. “If you notice, you will realise that the trend in terms of scores were on the average, most candidates scored between 180 and 220 which to me, is a true picture of their performances. “I think this will compel JAMB to lower the cut-off mark and be very objective in their approach to those scores. The problems we had in the past was that many candidates who did next to nothing were getting jumbo marks, while those who sweated for the exam usually got lower marks. These unscrupulous candidates with higher marks were the ones that were usually considered for admission first at the expense of others. Unfortunately, they get into universities and underperform.” Mrs Folashade Obembe, a civil servant, said the development has put a task on candidates to revisit their books ahead of exams. “With what I’m seeing now, our children will learn to go back and start reading. They are now realising is no more business as usual and that the only means by which they can pass JAMB is to study hard,” she said. Suspected hackers held Eighteen persons were arrested on Monday by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for attempting to hack into JAMB’s website to gain access to questions. Items recovered from them include 27 laptops, cables and a generating set. The suspects were picked up in an apartment at 13, Lutheran Road, Ikot Ekpene. The suspect linked a cable from the apartment to switch of one of the computer systems in a JAMB accredited centre close by. This was aimed at connecting the cable to the server for access to JAMB questions. The suspect was arrested alongside mercenaries already stationed to immediately supply answers to the JAMB questions once the portal is hacked and send same questions to candidates. Tight rein on centres A source close to a centre in Ijanikin on Lagos/Badagry Expressway said her boss rejected offers by parents and candidates who wanted him to help them circumvent the system. “My oga (referring to her boss) collected N15,000 each from candidates last year to help them in the examination. I also helped facilitate some candidates to the centre and made good money. But this year, it was different. My oga kept rejecting those that came with money thinking he would help them. He kept telling them that the era of exam fraud is over and he would not like to risk jail because he wanted to make money.” Another centre operator who also spoke to our reporter on ‘condition of anonymity, said aside the CCTV, centre operators were also directed to hands off their centres. “What JAMB did was to pay us off for using our centres. Beyond that, we were not allowed to come anywhere near the centres. JAMB brought their aides and security officials themselves. That made it difficult for any centre operator to want to misbehave,” the source said. “Aside CCTV cameras, coordinators at the centres and security guards were monitoring movements within and outside each premises, the CCTV cameras are also wired to JAMB headquarters in Abuja. This means that even if you try to hide anything at the centre here, they will discover in Abuja and that means trouble for the centre or for you,” the source added. Source - http://schooling.ng |

How Much Is 1 Dollar To Naira Exchange Rate Today in Black Market? Regarding the daily fluctuations of the dollar to naira exchange rate in Nigeria, we present to you the Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate in Black Market (AKA Parallel Market). The US dollar to Nigerian Naira exchange rate today varies between the CBN exchange rate and the parallel market (black market) exchange rate. Going by the CBN exchange rate is pegged at, 1 USD = N305. But coming to parallel market (Black market), it’s a different story entirely as stated below. 1 Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today In Black Market Buying => 1 Dollar to Naira = N375 Selling => 1 Dollar to Naira =N381 As prescribed above, the dollar to naira exchange rate in the black market is not pegged as CBN rate, as such, it fluctuates daily. Looking at this and comparing it with about 4 years back, we would see that the Nigerian Naira had been loosing its value rapidly. What then can be done to strengthen it? It can be strengthened by reducing the demand for the dollar against the Naira in the country. This can be achieved by local production and exportation, stop the use of the USD as a legal tender as practice by some firms and other practices strengthening the dollar against the Naira in the country. IMPORTATION IS ON THE HIGH SIDE Nigeria as a country imports more than it export. This shouldn’t be so. The ridiculous part of the whole scenario is we import things like pampers and toothpick many some countries to see us as consuming countries rather a producing country. You may think there is nothing wrong with this but a deep look into it would show you that we are strengthening the dollars against the Naira since most international transactions are in dollars. We need to become a producing country so we could have more to export aside oil. NIGERIANS OBSESSION FOR FOREIGN PRODUCT In Nigeria, make a quality product and label it ‘made in Nigeria,’ and you would see the low level of patronage. In the other way round, make an inferior product and label it made in US, Italy, Japan or even China and you would see how it would be rushed. This obsession for foreign products had made our importers import more exchanging our Naira for the dollars which had decrease the value of Naira. This obsession had even gone to another level that we now prefer services rendered by persons from foreign countries who would demand to be paid in their own currency rather than our own. Nigerians fly out to study outside the country and go for other services like medication, conferences, seminars etc. It would be better if we can strike a balance in this. There is a recent campaign in Nigeria which is the ‘buy 9ja to grow the Naira,’ many people had no yet accepted it. LOOTING OF PUBLIC FUND Public officers who are supposed to be custodians of our collective wealth had turned around to become the ones looting it. When they loot, they change this money into the dollar and stock them in foreign accounts, this had been the major source of Naira devaluation. FALL IN OIL PRICE It is no news that Nigeria demands largely on oil exports for its revenue and it is also no news that this oil had lose value in the world market in recent years due to various reasons. This had led to a reduction in our revenue which had also affected the Naira. If only we can diversify to grow the Naira. GOVERNMENTAL POLICIES The policies have been made by the Government had been a reason to. Just recently, there had been an outcry from some quarters that the government had technical devalued the Naira, an allegation that the Government denied. Either way, many foreign investors had lost trust in the economy and had refused to invest. This among other reason had been the reason Naira is depreciating again the dollar. Possible Reasons For The Delay In Sales Of The JAMB UTME Forms 2017/2018 Every day many students keep asking why the 2017/2018 JAMB UTME Forms is not yet on sale. Well, the reason why the Joint Admission Matriculation Board is yet to commence the sales of the 2017/18 Forms according to the JAMB Registrar is because of the change in the major trust of the sale which is the scratch card. Candidates used to buy scratch cards to access the forms online and that has been abused thoroughly. What JAMB want to do is for students to pay directly to government coffers and they are working out the process of doing so to avoid the type of abuse that it has been subjected to. So, they want to sell directly and to make sure that candidates pay into TSA account because during the past administration of the former Registrar there were many cases of students saying their scratch cards got burnt, others saying their scratch cards were swallowed by snakes or lost in an accident. Before the present administration the former Jamb Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde dismissed 12 staff on issues relating to the sale of scratch cards or e-facility cards as it was called. So, for now, the Joint Admission Matriculation Board [JAMB] needs to build on it by cancelling the whole process. Another reason is that JAMB doesn't want students to suffer as a result of a clash in the timetable. Students have to take NECO, WAEC and NABTEB exams. That is why they held meetings with examination bodies and agreed to realign our timetable, as of now there is no time yet for the sale of forms. Fraudsters thought that JAMB is going to sell scratch cards and they have started selling fake forms, though some have been arrested. The West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC has announced the cancellation of the results of candidates involved in examination malpractice during November/December 2015/2016 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The council issued this in a statement after its 61st meeting with its Nigeria Examinations’ Committee (NEC). The statement signed by the council’s Head, Public Affairs, Damianus Ojijeogu, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos. The statement said that the decisions of the committee would be implemented without delay and the affected candidates and schools would be duly informed by the council. It also stated that the meeting of the council’s NEC, the highest decision making body, was held on Wednesday, March 30 and Thursday, March 31 in Lagos. It explained that the committee also discussed the reports received on irregularity, special and clemency cases arising from the conduct of the 2015 May/June WASSCE. The statement said there were reported and established cases against some private candidates during the 2015 November/December examination which led to the sanction. It noted that in addition to the cancellation, some candidates would be barred from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years. The statement added that some schools found to have aided malpractices would be de-recognised. “In the course of considering the various reported cases of malpractice, the committee, after diligent deliberations, approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice. “This is as prescribed by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the council’s examinations. “However, the results of candidates who were exonerated by the committee will be fully released,’’ it said.
