Osun State University, UNIOSUN Graduates 1,647 Students as 64 Bags First Class Honours During 7th Convocation Ceremony Held in November, 2018. A merriment non-stop, eventful week programme to mark the 7th Convocation of Osun State University held from Thursday, November 15 to Thursday November 22, 2018 in the Main Campus with a total of 1,647 graduates from across different faculties in the university awarded first degrees. Sixty-two (62) of these numbers were awarded First Class degrees, 693 with Second Class Upper, 756 with Second Class Lower, 131 in Third Class and 5 with Pass degree. The University also awarded its first set of postgraduate degrees and diploma to 28 of its postgraduate students from across the various programmes being run in the College, even as it had five completed projects sponsored by the Federal Government through the Needs Assessment and Tertiary Education Trust Fund commissioned by the Governor and Visitor to the university, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The Governor was represented by his Special Adviser on Tertiary Education, Bursary and Scholarship, Professor Grace Akinola at the Commissioning programme held on Monday, 19th November, 2018. The main convocation event which is the conferment of degrees were held in three days, Tuesday, November 20 (Colleges of Law & Management and Social Sciences); Wednesday, November 21 (Colleges of Agriculture, Education, Humanities and Culture) and Thursday, November 22 (Postgraduate College and College of Science, Engineering and Technology & College of Health Sciences), 2018. The Governor of the State and Visitor to the university, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, while delivering his speech said knowledge and not certificate defines the essence of university, adding that certificate remains useless without corresponding knowledge to change the society for good. He explained that the existence of a university can only be justified if it positively affects its environment and contribute to development and growth. “Knowledge is the focus and final objective of learning and not certificate, knowledge makes you a complete person, while certificate only certifies you. Also, the existence of a university is meaningless if it is irrelevant to its environment,” Aregbesola said. He complained about what he termed indolence on the part of Nigerians by their failure to find lasting solutions to array of socioeconomic challenges facing the nation outside government. He said, “According to the report of NNPC, about N20m have been used to import fuel daily, while importation of fuel gulps 1.8bn quarterly, and instead of Nigerians to come together and stop importation, what they were clamouring for is reduction in the price of oil. “We are simply developing the economy of other nations and creating jobs for their teeming youths through importation at the expense of our nation”. The Vice-chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola in his speech reeled out the achievements of the university in the last two years to include accreditation of all 55 courses in the school by National University Commission (NUC). Alakija, in her remarks charged government at all levels to shift attention to the empowerment of youths especially the girl child and build a better society. She therefore charged the youth to be focused and skillful for them to be perpetually relevant among their peers. The Chancellor however congratulated Aregbesola for a successful tenure and lauded him for “demonstrating exceptional leadership skills and transforming the State.” The event was graced by many eminent personalities from within and outside the country including the Former Ghanaian President, John Mahama.
