ProgrammingRe: Software Developers Could Save Nigeria After Oil - Mark Essien by seyiade50: 12:55pm On Mar 23, 2015
digitalembrace:
I'm not shooting down your idea just providing some perspective.

Software saving Nigeria is a steep uphill task. To significantly contribute to GDP with software you've got to be highly competitive in the global software market. Writing code for local customers, private and public alike can only serve wealth distribution and growth of the industrial base but you need exports if GDP is to be impacted in any meaningful way to supplement or replace oil.

Last time I checked only the US had double digit percentage share of the global software market standing at about 40% while everyone else; Japan, Germany, united kingdom and China included struggled with single digit percentages. To put that in perspective 10% of the global software market is about $40 bn which comes down to less than $12bn after taxes. So to make a fifth of what we currently make from oil with software exports we've got to beat the Japanese and German software makers with our software exports.

Quite honestly, barring some exponential growth in that market and corresponding demand as well as reduction to barriers of entry (writing web apps is one thing, designing, architecting and developing maintainable, high Performant world class code is a different animal all together) I find it very hard to see how we can achieve this. It would require unprecedented coordination across the country sustained for decades impervious to changes in government administration and that's assuming all infrastructural problems disappear magically. Nigeria has never done such a thing before. But I guess there's always a first time.

Proper economic diverfication is our major hope. Each governor needs to hire business development consultants to meet with business leaders in each state and to conduct research to identify exploitable human capital and other resources and provide broad outlines for business ideas. Publicize the resulting report then have oil blocks licensed to a venture capital bank, kind of like bank of industry, dedicated to funding top naija graduates charged with starting businesses centered on exports inspired by the aforementioned report. Did you make a first class? Heres a scholarship to business school and one million dollars, take a look at the nation wide research on exploitable resources and suggested business ideas, identify a target export market and subjugate it.

A multifaceted plan of this nature is still a long shot but is more likely to save us.
So only first class grads should get such easy windfall eh? Did it occur to you that most of our schools are just in bad shape? Corruption, oppression, malpractices, personality cults are the daily order. Yep governors should work harder, but not the way ur putting it. Govs and business leaders are among those actively maintaining the status quo of the country today. Dey should simply shelve and fight corruption and do their jobs of developing infrastructure (especially schools). In short that's where research can then be carried out and encouraged. And how about the federal govt work on paypal among other international things using diplomacy, UN and the like? Once again we need to BIRTH THINGS. That is the only way to have something to export. The americans birthed and OWN IT when u look at the history, so I am not surprised by ur findings.

Again I am a woman n if I tell u when I started understanding the bible, u simply won't believe it and on top of that my personal relationship with Christ is ultimate. He clarifies all things for me. Try reading the bible with the Holy Spirit as ur guide, only then can u understand the Bible cos its the Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit.
You seek a quarrel madam. Please do you know the history of bible and christianity? Why would you relate ss to abortion? What of a woman's ss? What is wasted in that instance? It is not good for people to have different opinions if there is only one truth.

The scripture use is not wrong. How can God take His time and create plenty tiny semi-humans(sperm) in you and u waste it and u say its not wrong. I guess u will also say Lev 15-16+ no apply too bah. Smh. P.S I am a lot older than u so that shd count for a lil more knowledge of lifes issues abi... Lol. Bottomline it is a sin.
Again the leveticus chapters you quoted. I started reading em. I already know they don't apply also even before going far. To start with God has written his law in the heart of man so u know what is sin and what is not. Further if u want to go the way of the isrealites, I don't know if u have sufficient wealth to pay for all the sacrifices for what has now become mundane things for us. What is the greatest commandment? I believe Jesus Christ already answered it in the bible. Maybe you should read more on JESUS sire.

Sir you know more of life I won't argue. But I will disagree with your idea of waste. So ur saying that those morning u wake up and find u urinated some semen overnight will also count as sin against you? Semen is absolutely not human. When you urinate or sweat or stuff like that; surely they contain genes (which, according to you, are also humans unc).
Plus sir a christian should know that the life of man is not really the body but the spirit. Hahaha if you were to use every sperm developed in your body to make children sire; the world nogo contain dem.

I believe it is sinful and in the bible. self-service, not pouring inside a woman... name it. God killed a man (Onan) because of it and I have d bible scripture. Genesis 38:8-10
I bliv wrong scriopture o use. God killed Oman for another reason (evil intention). The real bible entry for this is what Jesus said about looking at a woman lustfully. If this causes masturbation that's sin; else its not. I remember masturbating when I couldn't solve some math problems well b4 15. My problem is has been porn and I'll keep fighting it hoping/praying everytime I have done the last of it. I am 24 and seriously vs sin in any form.

Allow me to contribute my brothers! First I introduce myself as a technologist who studied building in school. Yes I also write software because, as I said, I love technology. Our man has a point but perhaps carried it too far. Let me explain. We have professionals in general who are far more hardworking than the guys from the big guns (not just developers). But OUR PROBLEM EVERYWHERE IS LACK OF ORIGINALITY. We arre the best imitators but this always leaves u forever playing catchup. Number one before new tech reach a tech importer like Nigeria, the whole world already knows too much. We would forever be playing catchup. Point is we need to take the things we already know (all techs); bring our best minds together and RESEARCH. We can do things that have niot been done before. I know because I can do that (by the grace of God). I am sick and tired of learning everything from abroad with no knowledge to export. Thus the solution lies with a sponsor (govt or private any will do), not hustling developers LOLS (write ur own for Nigerians but don't expect to export anything). I rest my case.

Dang my first speech on here was screwed up and pathetic. I wish to relaunch my Nairaland Career lols. I went and insinuated Fashola only worked for the rich when modernizing lagos; that he did nothing about housing, education or employment. I am right now tendering an unreserved apology to the great leader and anyone irked by my ill_adviced assault. He did/does care for people. But I still insist that Nigerians in general are like GEJ and wife, simple. So b4 u insult him first look inside, do I help my people more than I dominate them? Am I incorruptible?

Look here everyone, the president may be bad but it is not the problem with nigeria. I believe the problem is Nigerians. We keep talking and do nothing similar to anything we say. We read the bible just like a novel. We celebrate and follow the rich like goats (more on that coming). We dominate anyone under our control and only want their worship. We have children because of our own selfish interest since we cannot train them financially or morally. We dey celebrate Fashola and APC who have done no better than mr president. My argument? There is anarchy in housing secto; education; employment; just name it. You can only mention BRT which for me is just another ploy by godfather Tinubu and other elitists to separate the rich from the poor. Who will save us from ourselves?
