Nairaland GeneralLeave Our Varsity Alone, Futasug President Pleads by Shegun93(op): 2:58pm On Jan 02, 2019
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE STUDENT UNION.

Wednesday, 2nd of January, 2019.

THE FUTA BRAND REMAINS INEXTINGUISHABLE

On behalf of the ever increasing numbers of the student of the Federal University of Technology Akure, we commiserate with the family of the deceased Former President and Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Usman, and our nation Nigeria.

The departure of an icon like him is indeed a great loss for our nation, and we also acknowledge that fact that a man like him deserve to be immortalised. We also acknowledge that the birth of this Institution of ours was made possible via the administration led by the departed hero, and we are ever grateful for this.

As afore established, the suggestion of immortalising this legend is a brillant idea, and a good move, however we strongly disapprove the renaming of our beloved university for the sake of the proposed immortalization. FUTA is our brand, a world wide brand with a vision of being a world class University, renaming such brand would demeaning the brand, disrupt the vision and discourage the students. The University embraces immortalization and this is visible with several structures in the university named after people who had contributed to the University in several manner, examples of such is the Albert Ilemobade Library which is the university Library, the Akindeko hall of residence which is a male hostel of the university, among others. These structures were named for the sake of immortalization. Hence we definitely embrace immortalizing the deceased by renaming any of the existing structures or perhaps naming the new structures. The FUTA brand however should not be tampered with in the name of immortalisation, as its a world wide brand.

The stand of the entire student of the Federal University of Technology Akure is that, we negate the suggestion of the renaming of our university and counter suggest that the university structures could be renamed or named for the purpose of immortalizing the legend.

We wish him a most deserved rest, and pray that the Almighty Allah will grant the family of the deceased and the citizens of Nigeria the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Nairaland GeneralAs Apetu, I Will Attract Investments To Ipetumodu – Prince Omogbolahon Ayoola by Shegun93(op): 3:46pm On Dec 23, 2018
What are your plans to transform the town?

Ipetumodu is an ill-governed, misunderstood and neglected big town, because for a very long time now, the right person has not assumed position of leadership.

I am saying this for you to know why the town’s traditional ruler should have keen interest in its development.

Historically, Ipetumodu was said to have been founded by one of Obatala’s sons. As such, Obatala is the ancestor of Ipetumodu people.

Can you imagine a town founded by an offspring of such a great man and its importance to Yoruba people? But see how it has been so relegated today.

This is unacceptable to every true son and daughter of Ipetumodu. This is the situation we are trying our very best to salvage and change it for the better.

Historically, if you look at the relationship between Obatala and Oduduwa, one story said Obatala was Oduduwa’s elder brother.

In another story, Obatala is regarded to be the high priest to Oduduwa, when the latter was welcomed to Ile-Ife.

But from whatever angle one chooses to look at it, Obatala seems to be a very important spiritual leader to Yoruba people.

He was regarded the spiritual head of all Ifa people during his time, Ifa being Yoruba people’s predominant religion.

So, Apetumodu throne is not just a mere throne for an Oba in Yoruba land, it is also the throne of the spiritual leader of all Ifa worshippers globally.

So, it is like two responsibilities in one. If one is given the opportunity to rule as Apetu of Ipetumodu, with the proper understanding of what that throne stands for and the responsibility of Apetumodu to Yoruba people, I think that will inform the kind of development drive, interest, ideas and plans such a ruler should have.

This will bring about an enormous Ifa benefits that will accrue to our people from all over the world, which will in turn ensure massive development of Ipetumodu in the area of tourism, which has not been adequately explored.

This is because Ipetumodu has not been so lucky in the recent past to have an Apetu that knows how to tap into this massive money spinning areas of our tradition.

Our current problem is the personality of the ruler. If you do not have deep knowledge and understanding of the position you are about to occupy, there is the probability you would not even know how to rule after ascending the throne.

But is Ifa still so relevant in Yoruba land?

Contrary to general assumption, a lot of people still practise Ifa. It is still very relevant both in Nigeria and the Diaspora.

The fact we must not ignore is that no religion can completely go out of fashion, as most people assume in this part of the world.

Ifa is not necessarily a religion like Christianity and Islam.

Considered critically, Ifa is more a way of life, how things are done in a particular way to avoid the minimum consequences, which are usually very costly mistakes.

For instance, Ifa will reveal the depth of arithmetic, which might be considered mysterious. And Ifa practice is not limited to this shores alone, as Yoruba people that practise traditional Ifa are scattered all over the world, especially in Brazil.

At some point, all these practitioners will want to know where this practice originated. They want to know about their history. They also want to research into all these things.

If an Ifa person in Brazil wants to do major research into Ifa practice for example, he or she must have Ipetumodu first on his/her mind. Because Ipetumodu is the modern home of Ifa practice.

Ifa worship is unlike Christianity and Islam, where people would gather and say, let us go to so and so place for our worship. It is much deeper than that.

Ifa is about spirituality, which enables people to dream dreams, especially big ones. Ifa is about the study of Yoruba history.

For example, if someone is researching into Yoruba history, and he gets to the part that talks about Obatala, will such a researcher go to Ibadan or Lagos? Certainly not.

It is just like someone trying to research into Oduduwa, who for whatever reasons, thinks Ile-Ife has lost its relevance with Oduduwa and then decides to ignore Ile-Ife.

Such a person will never come out with any meaningful finding. This is the point I am trying to make about the importance of Ipetumodu in Yoruba history.

Are you an Ifa practitioner, a Christian or Muslim?

I don’t worship Ifa. Rather, I am a student of Ifa codes and its meanings. I believe in God. It is not in my position to begin to dwell on the points that constitute Ifa code.

However, what I know is that Ifa is a religion, a system of divination. It refers to the verses of literary corpus, known as Odu Ifa.

Orunmila is the Grand Priest, as he was the one that reveals divinity and prophecy to the world.

Babalawos or Iyanifas use either the divining chain known as Opele, or the sacred palm or kola nuts called Ikin on wooden divination tray, called “Opon Ifa. Divination means to foresee, to be inspired by a god.

It is an attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of a standardised process or ritual, used in various forms throughout history.

Divination can be seen as a systematic method with which to organise what appears to be disjointed, random facets of existence, such that they provide insight into a problem.

What is the connection between Ifa and modern day monarchy in Yoruba land?

Before 1958, before an Oba was selected for any position in Yoruba land, all consultations were done with Ifa. It was compulsory, especially for an Apetu.

That was the practice our forefathers and fathers met on ground. But sadly in 1958, the Chief Obafemi Awolowo government in Western Nigeria then, made a declaration that negated that particular practice.

And that was when this confusion began. The process of selecting an Oba changed, as that declaration was adopted and made a law in Western Nigeria.

As we stand today, until there is a review of that law, Yoruba people can’t return to the practice of consulting the Ifa alone, when selecting an Oba. We just have to understand that government has put all monarchs under its armpit. So, the principal role Ifa played in helping to select an Oba has been tacitly taken away from the people, as government now has the overall say in who is chosen as Oba.

Today, all the Obas are paid by government. The way things stand today; no Oba can travel out of his domain without the permission of his Local Government Council Chairman.

It is also a well-known fact that a monarch is at the beck and call of government, which can equally depose him anyhow. There is absolutely nothing the people can do to protect the Oba, if such happens.

This is an aspect of the Constitution that should be looked into. We don’t know when or if it will ever be amended.

Except traditional rulers across the country come together and ask for an amendment of this law that gives absolute power to government of the day to do what it pleases with the traditional rulers and institutions, things will continue this way.

However, I honestly don’t see this happening in my lifetime, because today’s politicians love power.

As such, they will never let go of their grip on traditional rulers. They won’t want traditional rulers to become independent. That won’t be in their interest.

But with the current arrangement, traditional rulers and institutions are helpless, which is not in the people’s best interest. But what can they do? Absolutely nothing.

We just have to continue to live with it. All these affect the way traditional rulers behave today.

If you have a traditional ruler that is government dependent, he will not have any option than to toe government’s line in all matters, even when such are not in his people’s interest.

Such a traditional ruler might not be able to develop his domain so much either. But a king with a wider range of connection that goes beyond government in and outside his domain is likely to be more successful in that regard.

"They said they have the money, unarguably they really do have it but I tell them we have the people"

I know where it hurts, I feel the pains and I tell you this evening we are in it together. I'm just about graduating from the prestigious Federal University Of Technology, Akure, while my colleagues are celebrating our exit from FUTA, I have been in sober reflection of what life holds after graduation.

I'm sad because government efforts to provide a source of livelihood for quite many others already in labour market is grossly inadequate while several attempt to create an enriching atmosphere for youths to thrive is unyielding. Believe me this evening, I am battle ready to ensure a life enriching is enabled for us all. I will do everything within my legislative power to ensure a legislative framework is put in place that will address all those mitigating our collective consciousness.

Even though nothing can provide enough justification for youths engagement in social vices; Societal problem fighting us today was a product of a failed system. I understand all this because I'm a direct victim of government negligence of duty. I know where it hurts us. Where we are today isn't where we ought to be.

I have a clear picture of where we are and I tell you we are still very far away from reaching our destination, the people's representation that ought to guide us through this turbulence period are busy fighting frivolities. I'm ready to lead us through it and guide us all to the promise land. All I need from you is your support and together with you, we shall make our constituency a better place.

Nairaland GeneralMuslim Community In Osun State Got Motorised Borehole by Shegun93(op): 8:59pm On Nov 24, 2017
The first of the two motorized boreholes promised to Ife North local government in osun state by the Omoba Gbolahan Ayoola Foundation has been delivered.

It was a day full of praise for an erudite son of a community in Osun State when contractors were mobilised to the site where a motorised borehole is to be situated.

Commuters, traders and the community of Ipetumodu in Ife-North local government area of Osun State trooped out in their numbers in appreciation of a motorised borehole donated by Hon prince Gbolahan Ayoola; earlier this month it was reported that Hon Ayoola promised to donate two boreholes to the community this was made known by him during the annual Ipetumodu Day on the 1st of November 2017.

When contacted, hon prince Ayoola said,"my intention to donate motorised boreholes was borne out of my strong desire to make necessities available” he further stated that we identify areas where people are mostly in need of assistance and we work towards alleviating their difficulties.

The misrepresentation of Hon. Tunde Olatunji is becoming too much to be neglected and to be overlooked.

The unfortunate and most pitiable situation in Ife-North local government has forced many to start thinking what could be the problem, thus finding solution to the challenges will not be far fetched.

Youth unemployment is on the rise, inflation in market price, non regular payment of workers among many other problems had been identified.

The questions that come to mind is whether we have a representation of the people from Ife-North local government or not.
a representative that will relate the aforementioned challenges to the legislative arm of the state government thus prompting the house to putting the right legislative framework in place that Will combat the challenges that has turned perennial.

It is highly laughable that despite the fact we have a supposedly energetic youth as representative, we are yet to feel his presence in government.

I on behalf of many like minded youths hereby implore hon. Tunde Olatunji to tow the line of people who has demonstrated their willingness to do what they were voted for;
i support that his representation is not effecting any meaningful impact on the people of the constituents.

For three years, when others are busy giving out empowerment to unemployed youths, empowering the artisans, market women , giving out scholarship to students, our own representative has been found wanting.

Let me equally use this medium to remind him that the people have the power to recall any non performing honorable back home and in his case, we shall not hesitate to mobile electorates to begin the process of your recall if you continue the way you are doing.

Nairaland GeneralThe Need For Nans To Take On Cultism-by Salami Ismail by Shegun93(op): 7:01am On Nov 02, 2017
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) - the apex student body responsible for the welfare of over 30.1 million Nigerian Students both at home and in diaspora - is in a quagmire. Our association is torn between loyalty to cultism and loyalty to the welfare of Nigerian Students.

There is an urgent need for NANS to take the bull by the horn and confront the menace of cultism in various campuses across the length and breadth of Nigeria head on. NANS has the deeply entrenched structure to mobilise nationally to stampede cultism to a standstill. But our association is being docile on this cogent issue tarnishing the image of Nigerian Students.

This association must stand and defend - as a matter of topmost priority - the interest of wellmeaning Nigerian Students caught in the firing line by rival cult groups.

This silence from NANS on cultism in Nigeria is deafening. The recent gruesome murder(s) by rival cult groups domiciled in the Ekiti State University (EKSU) is worrisome and troubling. As it has happened in Ekiti, it will happen elsewhere.

Genuine comrades, cadres and student leaders from the lowlands in the South through the hills and plateaus in the Central to the plains in the North must take a stand. It is our battle. It cannot be fought on our behalf. We must not abscond in our duty to preserve the little integrity left of the Nigerian Students Movement.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is yet to release a statement on the recent killings in EKSU. NANS must borrow a leaf from the once vibrant OAU Student's Union Government whose standout performance during her glorious years has always been the total war waged on, any and every form of, cultism on the OAU campus. Examples abound of other ideologically driven SUGs in the country who took such stance.

The leadership of NANS across all levels - state, zonal and national - must desist from patronising cult members before, during and after every of its conventions and programmes. I make bold to state categorically without fear or favour that the NANS is one of the greatest patronisers of cult members in this country!

Students and cultists are light and darkness. We should never meet. We are two parallels that will and must never converge. Students are ideologues. Cultists are rogues. Students are pro-intellectuallism. Cultists are pro-violence. Students use pen. Cultists use weapons. Students are the hope for a rosy future. Cultists are the remembrance of our brutal past. Students are progressives. Cultists are reactionaries.

The campaign season is already taking shape in the rank and file of NANS comrades. From the equatorial in the South to the semi-arid in the North, the battle for the NANS top seat is shaping up to be delivered to the tropicals in the Central. Let any aspirant present a blueprint to stamp out cultism from our campuses and we shall devote resources and mobilise same for such aspiration.
Nairaland GeneralThe State Of The Ondo State Pdp-missive To The Last Legion by Shegun93(op): 8:50pm On Oct 31, 2017
THE STATE OF THE ONDO STATE PDP - MISSIVE TO THE LAST LEGION

by WANDE T. Ajayi

It is with heavy heart that I start this missive to the last legion of the largest political party in Ondo State, the People's Democratic Party(PDP). Unless we will deceive ourselves, the party is dead and would have been beyond redemption had the ruling party, All Progressive Congress(APC) not graciously disappointed the state's citizenry with its performance since its inauguration. Since February 24th, 2017, our party has been on a free fall as the leadership of the party hibernated.

However, what necessitated this free fall is not unconnected to the influx of Labour Party members into the party prior to the 2015 General Elections. To political watchers in the State, it was a blessing as the party became the undisputed most subscribed party in the state and elections should be a walk over. But all wasn't well. I will skip the rhetorics that unified the party after its woeful showing at the Presidential poll. I will however not dwell much on the pre-gubernatorial election matters but the aftermath.

Dr. Segun Mimiko, Barr. Eyitayo Jegede, and Hon. Clement Faborode have all failed the party!

After he decamped into the party, Dr. Segun Mimiko became the undisputed leader of the party. He had been a member before he decamped to LP and caused a political palace coup within just 4months which culminated into him becoming Governor. His failure to promote the unity of the party ahead of his selfishness and ego is the sole reason why the party seems doomed. Worse is his docility and his decision to fall into recession when the flock needed a shepherd after Feb 24. He left the party without a go-to leader and a rallying point. The flock scattered. It is no denying the fact that as Governor, he must have stepped on toes, mostly those who saw his choice of Eyitayo Jegede as his anointed candidate. When he left power, it was believed that he will unify the house and take the mantle as the leader of opposition in the state. As an elderstateman, one will understand his silence. But this deafening one is becoming nauseating. Not when the party is divided into four groups. The Mimiko Group, The Jegede Sympathizers, The Jimoh Aggrieved Alliance, and the Onlookers. By there nomenclature, one should be able to discern where lies each group loyalty, but the split of Jegede and Mimiko is quite conspicuous. When the need for an alternative party became exigent, it was the closest aides to Governor Mimiko that was in the forefront. From Akin Akinbobola to Taiye Afilaka to Simi Odumbaku etc. It was hard not to believe they had the Gov's blessing to set the template for another ship jump had Ali Modu Sheriff won at the Supreme Court. This further confounded our woes.

Eyitayo Jegede SAN against all odds was anointed as the party's candidate. Jimoh Ibrahim and Sola Ebiseni felt aggrieved. Their grouse? Central should not succeed Central. Many aggrieved party members either left the party outrightly, some stayed to midwife the death of the party. Despite all these and the many court cases, Jegede and the Party stormed its way to the second position. Jegede lost but failed the party who suffered so much cause of his candidacy. His camp started the malicious Mimiko Sold Out whispers. It divided the party. It was the final nailing on the coffin. With Dr. Mimiko on recess, it is expected that Barr. Jegede will take up the mantle and unify the fold being the flag bearer of the party. One had expected him to extend an olive branch to the second runners up, a fellow member of the bar, Barr. Sola Oke to join hands in constructively critiquing the incumbent in making the state a cynosure. Oke, being a founding member of the party could have accepted considering the dubious way Arakuntin Akeredolu won the primary and the general elections. Despite the less than a day notification to contest the election, Jegede was warmly accepted and got votes across the state. One expects him to build on that show of love. His home base, Akure, which he lost is still in disarray when he could have extensively discussed with stakeholders to get a way forward. Eyitayo Jegede should by now have learnt he is now a politician and should start acting like one.

Since 1999 that Ondo State PDP was formed, a southerner has never been Chairman of the party. That is the argument of those who want Clement Faboyede out of office. But fellow party faithfuls, the reason why Fabo and his executives should leave office is cause they've excellently failed us. Every member of the executive has shown a lackadaisical attitude to party work since Feb. 24! It is evident they only worked cause of the crumbs that accrues from Alagbaka in the hay days. No single press statement has emerged from this executive despite the gross failure of the current administration. The state needs just a little push before Aketi starts feeling the heat. He seems to relaxed knowing well the opposition is without form and lacks voice. The State's Party Secretariat has been under lock and key since God knows when. It has been argued that where will they get funds to run the party. I ask them where Osun PDP got funds to win a Senatorial Election or you think Sen. Adeleke would have decamped to the party had it been its in a sorry state like Ondo's? I even wonder why our National Legislators have not started to jump ship like their state counterparts. Ward meetings, not even unit, have stopped abruptly. No direction from Akure. Even the South West Vice Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, has neglected his home base. This is less than 50 days to a National Convention! Contestants for the Party National Chairmanship has been touring but none has deemed it fit to visit Ondo cause they don't know where to go or whom to meet. Mimiko and Jegede are in a supremacy battle that will consume both politically if care is not taken and the party leadership is silent. The last time we heard from the party was a memo suspending and expelling members. Up till now, the reconciliation committee have not met. So much for our dear party!

To us, the Last Legion, it is time for us to regroup. How will we do it? When Moses went to meet the Lord on the mountain, Israelites came together. We will come together, but we will only not create a graven image for ourselves. Many brave hearts have fallen by the side, these were the ones who even benefitted immensely from the party, but let us not look. Let us wait till when they will come back to beg for our votes and support. Let us keep the flag flying. Though the toad may be rough, let us not forget, there is truly going to be light at the end of the tunnel. Mimiko, Jegede, Faboyede, Olafeso, etc might have failed us, let us not forget, the end shall surely justify the means.

Thanks and God bless.

HOLD FG RESPONSIBLE SHOULD ASUU STRIKE-EX FUTASU PRESIDENT

The immediate past president of the Federal University of Technology, Akure Students' Union (FUTASU) Comrade. Olusegun Oladele SOLAR who recently declared his willingness to contest a seat in the 2019 Osun Assembly, has asked Nigerian students - the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), civil organizations, labour unions, parents and every stakeholder to hold the Federal Government culpable should the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) embark on another industrial action.

He made this known in statement made available to newsmen in Ilesha, Osun State. He said, the Federal Government's nonchalant attitude to education is worrisome thus questionable. He also said that a genuine progressive government with well-thought policy will not breach an agreement entered with various trade unions.

He further stated that "government's ineptitude to ASUU agreement is deliberate and a mockery of the poor masses who can't afford to send their wards abroad to study". He lamented the unfair treatment being melted out to Academic staff and other unions in the country.

While urging ASUU to use all available means within the ambit of the law to pursue their demands, he admonished that universities presently undergoing their examinations should be given the grace to conclude their exams.

PoliticsFormer FUTASU President Speaks On International Youth Day by Shegun93(op): 7:07am On Aug 12, 2017
The immediate past president of the Federal University of Technology, Akure students' union and a former children Parliamentarian (Ife-North state constituency) who recently declared his intention to contest for a seat in state of Osun house of assembly.

The aspiration of this 23 year old, got more momentum following the passage of the popular #NotTooYoungToRun bill. While congratulating youths across the globe and Nigeria in particular on this year occasion of youth day; he urged various youth coalition to embrace peace in the overall interest of the country.

In his words, he called on all youth groups across the country to shun all activities that threatens our survival as one indivisible nation. Below is the full statement:

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2017; YOUTH BUILDING PEACE

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. We must continue to show love to ourselves”

I celebrate with other youths across the world and in particular Nigerian youths as we celebrate yet another international youth day; For being fortunate to witness this year’s youth day provides yet another opportunity for us to show sober reflection on our daily activities that threatens our peaceful co- existence as a nation as this year celebration focuses on YOUTH BUILDING PEACE.
Youths, as important stakeholders and a major determinant of progress, development in any society; we must refrain ourselves from beating the drums of violence and also we must ensure we prevent ourselves from becoming too belligerent. "Nigeria is better together than being apart."

Even though our nation’s unity is negotiable, we must know that in our diversity comes a great nation Nigeria; our grievances, pains, uncertainties, and agitations must be channeled in such a way that our unitary oneness will cease not to become a question begging for an answer. All the erroneous impression fighting our minds and souls about our country's unity, development and other areas affecting us must be cleared, then we can come together as one to figure out our common area of interest and pursue them legitimately and in accordance with the laid down rules.

The uncertainties in our minds, the tension bewildering our souls, insecurities, government negligence and some other factors are the ones that metamorphosis into the problems, challenges hovering around our country, threatening our peaceful coexistence.

The government at all levels going by this year international youth day theme; YOUTH BUILDING PEACE, must provide an enabling environment for we the youths to build a sustainable peace; government must be more responsive to our (YOUTH) agitations, concerns, and worries; government must assuage, placate and abate the citizenry by providing the leadership expected of them, ensuring that a Nigeria worth living is enabled.

Various youths groups who are the warmonger, propagator of hate-speeches and songs must know that without Nigeria been irenic, meaningful development is going to become a nightmare; “a community full of hatred to one another cannot develop”. As youths, we must be our brother’s keeper and must refuse to be a tool for destruction.

HAPPY CELEBRATION!!!
GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.
