SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 22

Dear Diary,
May 1st, 2016.

It's a new month. I am so sorry that I have been MIA for some time now. It wasn’t my intention. So many things have happened. I am going to tell you about it, diary.

Let’s start with the good stuff. My elder sister, Adanne is getting married in a few weeks and she asked me to be her maid of honour. I am quite excited about this. I have always wanted to be my sister’s maid of honour. I initially thought she would ask her closest friend, Oluchi, but, she asked me and of course, I accepted.

My mum is so happy and my elder brother, Ugochukwu, is already intimating us that he is next in line. I am thinking of taking out the five million naira Korede’s uncle gave me. I am going to use it to support my sister. It’s her wedding and it’s the first wedding in the family. She is thirty-two and I am sure that she is thanking God for bringing a good man her way.

Where is my own husband? When will he come? I am 28 years, and I hope I won’t have to wait till I am 30 years before the guy comes along.

Oh my Prince Charming, I wait for thou to come and rescue me from single hood.

I went to church today. It’s a good thing that it was a thanksgiving service because, I am also thanking God for my life. I got discharged from the hospital yesterday and I remember being brought into that same hospital barely conscious.

What happened? Do you really want to know? I will tell you diary. The common saying goes, “As you lay your bed, so you lie on it”.

Last week Friday, I decided to stop by an eatery before driving home from work. The moment I got out of the vehicle, my green SUV jeep, Mrs. Akhere, Mr. Nosa’s wife and two of her friends, cornered me!

I had no idea that they ‘d been trailing me from the office car park. These women collected the car keys from me, tore my clothes and beat me into a pulp. I couldn’t defend myself against three plump women. I was completely helpless.

No one came to my rescue. People just watched from a nonchalant distanCE, while others walked away. These women left me at the side of the road, badly injured and they drove off. They took my jeep with them.

Thank God, a Good Samaritan came by. He helped me and drove me to the nearest hospital. He deposited some money for my treatment and he made sure that I was admitted before he left. Till now, I don't know who he was. I pray that God will also come to that man's aid in his time of need.

When I opened my eyes and found myself on an hospital bed, I discovered that I had a fractured left elbow, I had bruises all over me, and a black eye! I wept because I knew I was the genesis of my own problems. It was all my fault.

Can you imagine that Mr. Nosa showed up bearing gifts?

What does this man want? What is he always looking for? Why does he keep behaving as if his buttocks have been set on fire?

I told him to go home to his maniac wife and leave me alone. I asked him to delete me from his memory and erase him from his leering thoughts and daydreams.

I value my life and I didn’t want to die young. He pleaded as usual and begged me. He made a dozen promises, but I wasn't moved this time around. He claimed that he would retrieve the jeep from his wife, but I told him to keep his car. I do not want anything from him again. I was done with the whole charade.

He wasn’t happy. I was past caring and he left in a foul mood. I hope that he would leave me alone this time around.

Oh diary, I spent a full week at the hospital. What if I had died in the process? My mom and siblings would have cried and moved on with their lives after a while.

I promise myself, from this day onwards, I will reject every advances from Mr. Nosa and every other married man in this world. No more! I need to follow my own rules.

My wounds have healed and I am still alive.

Thank God for me diary.

Talk to you later.

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 21

Dear Diary,

April 14th, 2016.

It’s Friday night and I am so glad that the weekend is finally here. I had quite an interesting week both at home and at work. Let me gist you about it diary.

During the week, after the close of work on this particular day, Mr. Nosa gave me the keys to a car! Yes, a brand new car! Now I am the owner of two cars.

When I went to the staff parking lot to check it out, it turned out to be a green SUV Jeep! This man has totally gone nuts! Na by force to be his side chick?

I thanked him and accepted to go to a Chinese restaurant to dine with him and wash the car. Abi, wetin we for do o. I ate till I was very full! I had a good meal.

Oh diary, I had no more excuses, than to accept to be Mr. Nosa’s side chick. His gift had weakened my resolve. I warned him expressly to keep his wife off my scent and he assured me that I will be safe. I don’t intend to stay attach to him for too long anyway. Just for the time being. Until my Prince Charming shows up.

I later followed him to an exotic hotel and allowed him to have his way with me. He was at it for close to an hour. I don’t know where he gets his energy from. His rotten cucumber was just plunging into my honey pot as if it wanted to die there.

He tried to convince me to spend the night with him, but, I declined, especially because I wasn’t prepared for that.

I left my official car at the office’s parking lot, and came home in my new car. Diary, na commotion I meet for the house oh.

I saw Sam seated at his doorway looking as if the weight of the whole world was resting on his shoulders. Then I saw his choir /lover/friend standing by his side with an elderly couple, then, a man dressed like a Pastor and two elderly looking men by the Pastor’s side.

Cassandra and Itoro filled me in on what was going on. The choir sister was pregnant and she almost died while attempting an abortion. Her parents got wind of the situation and they reported to the senior pastor of the church when they found out that Bro. Sam was responsible. The pastor and some of the church elders came to the house, along with the choir sister and her parents. Bro. Sam tried to deny his relationship with the girl at first, but, by the time her mother pounced on him, he confessed.

I was shocked, but, not entirely surprised at the turn of events. I blamed the guy for playing with the kind of fire he wasn’t ready to quench. How stupid was he? Why didn’t he use a condom? It is cheap and easy to get. The girl, too, wasn’t serious. She should have protected herself, since she was willing to give her body to the man she fancied. She should have taken other steps to secure her body. Abi I lie?

I went into my flat and left them all out there. Cassandra and Itoro remained there, listening to everything being said. Those two Tatafos can never, ever change.

Today, I got back from work and I met another commotion. I saw three ladies, one on the plump side and the other two were slim. They were all fighting outside Prince’s flat, while he stood there and watched.

Cassandra, Itoro and Timi were also gathered around, watching these girls as they disgraced themselves. I found out that one after the other, they arrived at Prince’s place, at almost the same time. They began to fight themselves, each one claiming to have more right to Prince, than the other.

I was just disgusted. Instead of these girls to fight Prince, the very one who was cheating on them, they were busy attacking themselves. I can never be caught dead fighting over a man. For what now? I respect myself. And I know my lane. I do not cross my boundary at all, at all.

I got irritated when I saw Nasir leaving his apartment with a woman old enough to be his mother. That guy disgusts me like hell. His lifestyle and his arrogance makes me wanna puke. He might feel that he is untouchable for now, but, sooner than he thinks, karma will come knocking at his door.

I think I have overstayed my welcome in this compound. It is high time I move out. My level is now above all these petty dramas. I hope to have a blast this weekend though. Mr. Nosa said he wants us to spend some time at whispery palms.

Lucky me, right?

Night-night diary.

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 20

Dear Diary,

April 8th, 2016.

It’s Saturday night and a few minutes before midnight. I am not sleepy, but, I am kind of physically drained. I am writing in my diary holding a torch. NEPA just struck again and I am not in the slightest mood to switch on my generator. I guess I might have to force myself to sleep once I am done writing. I am groaning now.

Oh diary, it’s been an interesting week for me. Let me gist you.

I saw Nasir going into his apartment with a plump sized lady sometime this week. Then the next thing I heard was the music blasting from his speakers. I hope whatever goes on in there is consensual. If it isn’t, I am so sorry for the lady. That’s another rape victim loading. I can’t wait for the day nemesis will catch up with this guy.

I also saw Prince leaving his apartment with two skinny ladies. That guy can never, ever change. In this world or the next, he remains incorrigible. He changes women every week. He is a chronic womanizer. And I am beginning to think he is cursed or worse. Maybe it runs in his family. He is so, so done for.

Timi and Itoro were at it again. Come and see the wrestling match in my compound o diary. They both cursed their generations unborn to the extent that they started to exchange blows. I stayed in apartment and watched the local wrestle mania in my compound through the window.

Foolishly, Cassandra came in between them. Who send this girl message o? What was she thinking? I guess she was trying to stop the fight, but, she got more than she bargained for. A punch meant for Itoro landed on her tummy! The girl went down in an instant, holding her stomach.

Timi and Itoro fled to their flat and locked their door. I was also afraid. The way Cassandra laid, curled up on the ground, one would have thought something worse had happened. But, she should also have known better. No one separates Timi and Itoro, least you get hurt in the process. Everyone living in our compound knew this. I pitied the girl sha. She got up after a while and staggered into her own flat. From my window, I saw the stupid live-in-lovers peeping from their own window. Crazy people!

It’s being a while since I saw the couple in my compound, Thomas and Ivie. The only married couple in the compound. I am guessing that they must have travelled or something. I envy those two. Even without kids, they have each other.

During the week, Mr. Nosa came to my office. He asked if my mechanic had returned my car, and I replied with an affirmative. He said I needed a second car, so that when one develops fault, I could use the second one. Mr. Nosa promised to get me a second car, but he also wanted me to be his mistress. He promised to take care of me. I told him that I didn’t want his wife’s trouble. I don’t want to meet my maker anytime soon. This man should stop disturbing me biko. He is fast becoming a nuisance.

My mum celebrated her 60th birthday today. My siblings and I put heads together and threw her befitting party. She was truly surprised and happy. She celebrated with her friends and a few of our relatives living in Lagos.

At the party, my sister and brother came with a plus one. My sister told my mum that the guy wants to marry her. And my brother said the lady he came with was someone he planned to marry.

I felt kind of alone, because I came with no one. I couldn’t even boast of a boyfriend, talk about a fiancé. I am 28 years with no guy hanging around me, except an old cargo, a stupid married man that has refused to leave me alone. You know who I am talking about. It is no one but Mr. Nosa.

Anyways, I am happy for my siblings. I wish both of them all the joy and happiness they truly deserve. My Prince Charming will find me soon enough. I can feel it in my heart of hearts.

I think I will go to church tomorrow. I need to go and pray concerning my relationship status. I need God to intervene ASAP. I want to be married before I clock 30 and I want to have all my children before I turn 35. What do you think diary?

I am beginning to feel sleepy. I am yawning now.

I guess I will turn in for the night.

Night-night diary.

SASSY AND SLAYING: DIARY OF A SINGLE NAIJA BABE
Episode 19

Dear Diary,

2nd April, 2016.

Today is Sunday. It is the beginning of a new month. I have not written for several weeks now. I apologize diary. I have been so busy at work. My new job title came with its own burdens. I have more work and less free time. My staff are not making matters easy either. Many of them are in their thirties, especially the guys. Can you imagine that most of them feel that I am too young to be their boss, their madam? I have heard them call me names behind my back. But none of them have found the guts to say it to my face, or undermine my authority. I dare them to try it. The ladies are worse off. I am older than most of them and they are all envious of me. I know they all wish that they were in my shoes. Skylight Properties do not take kindly to employees who disrespect their bosses. You can actually get sacked for disobeying your immediate boss or any of the managers or even anyone ahead of you in the company. I guess this rule have kept my staff in check. I laugh in French and Spanish combine.

Notwithstanding, I am a no nonsense person when it comes to work etiquette. I do my job very well and I don’t laze around. I guess my staff are just getting to know this part of me. They don’t play with any of the work I give them. Unlike before. You can’t believe the kind of excuses many of them give for not doing their jobs or completing a given task. Why do you want to get paid if you do not work? Some people actually have their brains fried.

So diary, due to my busy schedule at work, I try as much as possible to relax and have fun during the weekend. I have an accommodation allowance and I am thinking of getting a bigger place. I will change my furniture too and my electronics as well. Probably by summer, I will get it done. I am going to save for now.

I was in church this morning. I had to go, so I could give thanks to God. Something unimaginable happened to me yesterday. It all started when one of the managers at work invited me for her daughter’s wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony and one could tell that they spent a lot of money. On my way home from the wedding reception, my car developed fault. I was so upset. I just had it serviced last weekend. Why was it misbehaving?

I called one of my mechanics, the one that helped me to change a flat tyre last month. The guy boarded a bike from wherever he was and he came to meet me at the place my car halted. Thank God he knew the area very well. He checked the vehicle and told me that he would need some cash to buy the things he needed to repair my car. Thank God I redrew some money that morning, on my way to the wedding. It’s always good to have some cash on you. You never can tell what you will need. The mechanic advised me to take a taxi home because; he wasn’t sure how long it would take for him to repair the car. Unfortunately, he might have to tow the car to his shop if he didn’t succeed.

I was already exhausted. I begged him to do his best. I needed the car on or before Sunday. He made promises, assuring me that he would bring the car home that night or at most on Sunday afternoon. I thanked him and walked to the nearest bus-stop. I refused to board the buses that came my way, even though they were going to my side of the town. I felt with my new job title, I couldn’t possibly be seen in a bus.

I waited at the bus-stop until I got a cab. When I tried calling my taxi driver friend earlier, he told me that he wasn’t in town. The driver agreed to take me home at a price that was twice the initial fee, but I wasn’t bothered. I just wanted to get home. I was already dreaming of taking a cold shower and sleeping in my bed. I sat at the backseat of this cab and began to browse on my phone. Suddenly, the driver swerved off the main road and nosed into a bushy path. I started to protest. I panicked and tried to get the car doors open, but, they were locked. The man stopped the car, turned around and blew a white substance into my face.

I slumped on the seat, feeling dizzy all of a sudden. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t move any part of my body and I became very, very scared. What kind of trouble have I gotten myself into?! I said to myself. Why are bad, bad things always happening to me? I was beginning to feel like I was cursed or something.

The cab driver got down from the vehicle; he opened the door and dragged me out. I saw him empty the contents of my bag. He took my cash, phones and my ATM cards. He knelt beside me and took off my necklace, bracelets, ear-rings and wristwatch. He also took my shoes! My expensive shoes! He threw the complimentary cards in my bag at me and got back into his car. The thief drove off like a mad man. I don’t know how long I lay there in that bushy path, but I knew it got really dark. Then I started to feel strength surging into my body after a while. I crawled out of the bush path and staggered to the filling station I saw down the road.

I approached the filling station manager and explained to him that I had just been robbed. He borrowed me his phone and I began to call the numbers on the complimentary cards with me. No one picked my calls! I don’t know my mum’s or any of my siblings’ phone numbers by heart, unfortunately, I couldn’t call them. I made a decision right then and there to cram their numbers ASAP. I went through the complimentary cards again, and then I saw Mr. Nosa’s number. I didn’t want to call the man, but, I didn’t have a choice.

He picked my calls and came straight down with one of his drivers. He was happy that I wasn’t physically hurt. Mr. Nosa called his account officer and the woman was able to help me block my current and savings accounts. But, 200k had already been redrawn from my bank accounts.

Mr. Nosa promised to give me back the cash that was stolen from me, the phones and every other thing that I lost. That very night, he transferred a million naira into my account. When we got to the gate of my compound, I got down from the car and Mr. Nosa followed me into my apartment. He said he wanted to make sure that I was fine. I allowed him in; at least, I was grateful for his assistance. I was shocked when I saw the time on the wall clock. It was past eleven! I collapsed on my bed and covered myself with a blanket. I was so tired and all my bones ached terribly.

Mr. Nosa told me to take care of myself, but before he left, he asked me to think about his offer. He still wanted me to be his side chick. I was too tired to argue with the man. I pretended to be asleep and I was happy when he left.

This morning, I ran into the nearest church on my street to give thanks to God because he was the one that protected me last night. What if that cab driver was a ritualist? What if he had cut me open and taken my vital organs? What if he had also raped me, after robbing me? What if? What if? What if?

Oh diary, I am just thankful right now. I am thankful that I am still alive. I might still be far from God, but, that hasn’t stopped him from keeping me safe from harm. He is indeed the God of all creations.

Got to go diary. I can see that mechanic from my opened window. I hope he came with my car.

See yah later!

Mwaoh!
