CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE Gbemiga sprayed perfume under his armpits. He noticed his parents’ and sisters approving stares. He grinned. He had already seen his reflection in the mirror. He looked very handsome. “Are you going to the birthday party alone?” Remi asked out of curiousity. The last time she went to his hostel to visit him, she found him in the company of another girl. She was different from the previous one she had been introduced to. It gladdened her heart that girls from educated and respectable families were interested in her son. “No.” “Who are you taking along?” He turned to his mother. Her eyes were full of questions. “I am going to the party with my girlfriend.” Lola and Kemi exchanged glances and giggled. It was good to know that their brother was dating. “Is she the girl you were dancing with during your birthday party?” her eyes twinkled with delight. She liked that particular girl. She heard that her father had a bakery on the island. He shook his head and glanced at the wall clock. It was almost six o’clock. “So, who?” she pressed. “Oluwabukola.” Remi blinked. She didn’t remember if any of the girls she had seen with him bear that name. She turned to look at her husband. Baba shrugged. She returned her curious gaze to her son’s smiling face. “Do we know her?” “Yes,” he nodded his head. Remi raised an eyebrow. “Oluwabukola,” his father repeated the name and glanced at his daughters. Lola had a frown on her face, “Don’t tell me you are talking about Bukky,” she looked her brother up and down. “Which Bukky?” Kemi tugged at her sister’s shoulder. “Aunty Kike’s niece,” Lola’s disapproving eyes were fixed on her brother’s undaunted ones. Kemi blinked and shot her brother a shocked glare. “Kike? Which Kike?” Remi raised her voice. She hoped that they were not talking about their neighbour. “Aunty Kike now, our neighbour who lives in the fourth room on your right.” Baba glanced at his son, “Don’t tell me that you are associating with those illiterates.” Remi jumped to her feet, “God forbid! What happened to all the educated girls in your school?” she vented. Gbemiga heaved a tired sigh. He knew his family would react that way. It was one of the reasons he had been holding off on telling them. “I have to leave now, time is not on my side,” he looked at his brown leather wrist-watch. “Go where? With that girl? You must be out of your mind!” his mother’s voice hit the roof. His frown deepened, “Mum, Bukky is like every other girl out there…” “You are wrong. She is not in our level at all,” she was upset that her elder brother was dating a nobody. He glanced at Lola and eyed her. “Alakara for that matter. She is not in our class,” Kemi chimed in. “Bukky is a born-again Christian. She is a good girl running her own business. She is her own madam,” he stated as a matter of fact. Remi laughed scornfully, “You call selling bean cake business, oh Gbemiga, you disappoint me.” He didn’t like what they were saying about his girlfriend. “You must break up with her at once and find yourself a suitable girl from a good family,” his father said as a matter of fact. “I love her dad,” he looked at him. Kemi and Lola burst out in laughter. “Dad, I am sure that she has given him love portion to eat,” Kemi clapped her hands. “Love Portion mixed in akara,” Lola added. She and her younger sister started to laugh again. “I am twenty-one. I am old enough to decide who I go out with,” he looked from one parent to the other. “We know, but, we are only looking out for you,” Baba reasoned with him. He eyed his father, “I will be home before or after ten,” he headed to the door and let himself out. “Eh! Eledumare ooooo! Oluwa gba mi ooooo!” Remi went on her knees, lamenting. “He has no choice. He must break up with that girl,” Baba gritted his teeth. xxxxxx The knocks on the door got her attention. She turned down the volume of the television and looked towards the door. “Who is it?” “Mama Gbemiga.” Kike blinked in surprise. What does the woman want? It was the first time she would come and knock on her door. Since she moved into the compound, the woman rarely spoke to her. She carried herself as if she was better off than everyone else. “Come in.” The door opened. Remi marched into the room and closed the door behind her. She looked around until her eyes fell on Kike who was seated on the settee in front of the television. “Good evening.” “Evening,” her curious eyes remained on the woman’s firm ones. “Is Bukky home?” “No. She went out with Gbemiga.” Remi frowned, “Please, please, please tell your niece to leave my son alone.” Kike looked her up and down. ”She is not in his level at all. Oil and water can never mix.” Kike blinked in disbelief, “What are you talking about?” Remi eyed her, “You do not need to pretend. You and I know that your niece is running after my son like a cow on heat.” Kike got to her feet, feeling infuriated, “You’ve got the wrong picture. It is your son that is chasing Bukky like a Cock after a Hen.” “God forbid!” she raised her voice. “God has already accepted their relationship. Stop fighting it.” Her eyes flashed with anger, “Which God?” She eyed her, “You must be high on something!” “Look here, you cannot come into my room and start to insult me.” Remi clapped her hands together, “Insult you, abi? I have not even started. I am warning you, tell Bukky to stay away from my son, or else, she won’t be able to comprehend what her eyes will see.” She hissed and marched out. Kike looked to the ceiling. Gbemiga and Bukky were not babies. No one had the right to define their relationship. She sighed heavily and settled back on the settee. She would have a heart to heart talk with her niece when she returned home that night. If the Phillips doesn’t want her to date their son, she should allow them to eat him. He wasn’t the only man on planet earth. Bukky was pretty and industrious. Her Prince Charming would come for her in good time. Since she moved into the house, she had no record of fighting with anyone. She hoped to keep it that way till she moved out. Bukky had been setting aside money so that they could live the house and rent a better place. The girl was tired of sharing kitchen, bathroom and toilet with more than a dozen of people. She was also at her wits end, but what choice do they have? She prayed that God would expand the girl’s business so that they could relocate sooner than planned. |
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO Kike and her niece returned from church and met Gbemiga and his family seated outside the house playing a game of Ludo. Bukky was surprised to see her ex. She didn’t know that he was back home from school. She and her aunt greeted them and went in. She noticed the way his eyes lingered over her, before he returned his attention to the game. She followed her aunt into the room and settled on the bed. She heard the woman saying something like she was going to the kitchen to make lunch. She lay on the bed and heard the bang of the door. She kicked off her shoes, lay on her back and coiled into a ball on the mattress. Her ex was back. The best way to deal with their situation was to intentionally avoid him. No wonder some people were against dating people living in the same house with them. The night she found him at the back of the kitchen with one of the girls that came for his party flashed through her mind’s eye. The sooner she deleted him completely from her mind, the better for her. She was bent on moving on. Nothing and no one was going to pull her back. She heard knocks on the door. Who could it be? Maybe one of her sales girls or both of them. During the weekends, they usually come to the room to watch soap operas on Telemundo or the Zee World channel. “Come in.” she sat up and looked towards the door. The door made a creak sound when it opened. Gbemiga walked in and she jumped to her feet abruptly. She grimaced. She should have asked, who was at the door before saying ‘come in’. “Hi,” he closed the door behind him. “Hi.” He noticed the changes in the room. The former bed had been replaced with a bigger one and a two settee chair with the flat screen T.V set was also new. He returned her questioning stare. Where was he going to start from? Before he came in, he had memorized what he wanted to say and how he was going to say it, but, at that moment, words failed him. “Bukky, I am sorry.” She raised an eyebrow. What was he apologizing for? What was he even doing in her aunt’s room? “I am the cause of our broken relationship. I was selfish and… and I wanted to have my way, regardless of how you felt. I am deeply sorry. Please forgive me.” She stood there looking at him. He seemed sincere, but, his apologies were too late. “I lost focus and I eventually lost you. I wish I can turn back the hands of time. I wish I can undo what I have done. I wish I can give you back your innocence.” Her expressionless face became clouded with hurt, then anger. She didn’t like remembering what she had lost. “I am so, so sorry,” he went on his knees. His action astounded her. “I am so sorry for taking advantage of you. Please find it in your heart to forgive me.” After everything he put her through, now he wanted her forgiveness. Nevertheless, he sounded genuine. She couldn’t understand why he was seeking her forgiveness now. Why didn’t he apologize several months ago? Why now? What did he really expect from her? “I will be eternally grateful and ecstatic if you will also accept me back.” She blinked. What did he just say? He wanted her to accept him back. Was that even possible? She began to shake her head. “Forgiving you is one thing, but, dating you again is another.” “Please Bukky, even after we broke up, my feelings for you didn’t change. I have gone out with other girls, but, no one compares to you.” She placed both hands on her hips. She wanted him to leave. She didn’t want to hear what he had to say. She had, had enough. “All I need is another chance. I promise not to force you into anything you do not want to do. I promise to keep sex out of our relationship. I promise to let my family know that you are my baby girl. This time around, things will be different.” She shook her head again. She wasn’t interested. “I am sorry.” He got to his feet and walked up to her. “Bukky…” “You are too late,” she thought of Chike. He was the person she wanted to be with, not her ex. “I love you. I never stopped loving you,” his pleading eyes mirrored his feelings. “Please don’t say that. Love is more than mere words.” “I know and I am going to prove it to you.” “There is nothing to prove. I am not interested.” The thought that she didn’t want him made him to feel sad, “Bukky please. Things are going to be different this time around.” She looked up at him and noticed the sincerity in his eyes. She turned away, confused. She still had feelings for him. She had not gotten over him completely. Was it wise to start over with him? She also had feelings for Chike. She was sure that by the time he returned to Lagos, he would ask her out and she was going to say yes. But, now, her ex-boyfriend wanted her back. Should she give him another chance and hope things would work out between them or wait for Chike’s return and begin a new relationship with him? “Bukky...” he came up behind her. “Look, I don’t think we should…” He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. “I love you. I will be miserable without you in my life. I cannot live without you.” The warmth of his arms stirred her emotions, “Look…we…we can’t, I can’t…” “Please, take me back. I will not disappoint you,” he whispered into her ear. She breathed out loudly. God what should I do? “Bukky…” She pulled away and faced him, “Fine, I forgive you. But, there is no way I am starting over with you. We don’t see eye to eye,” she crossed her arms across her chest. “I promise you, things are going to be different this time around,” he tried to convince her. She stared at him long and hard. Maybe he was right. Maybe he had changed. Maybe things were really going to be different. “Okay, okay, fine. Let’s try again.” He beamed, hands clasped, he breathed out loudly, “Thank you. You will not regret this.” She eyed him, “I hope so.” “A friend of mine is celebrating his birthday party this evening. I want you to come with me.” She blinked in astonishment. It was the first time he would be taking her out to meet his friends. “Okay.” “Great! You need to be ready before six.” “Okay.” He stared back at her like he had just won the American Visa Lottery, “See you later,” he was relieved that God listened to him and answered his prayers. “Yeah.” She watched him leave. What had she just done? She placed a hand on her head. What happens when Chike returned to Lagos? What was she going to tell him? Kike walked in carrying a pot pf steaming jollof rice. “Was that Gbemiga?” She met her curious gaze, “Yes.” “I hope you are not dating two people at the same time,” Kike set the pot on the wooden cupboard. “No! Of course not.” Her aunt eyed her. “I have seen the way Chike looks at you.” She scratched her upper arm, “Ehn… we are just friends.” Kike brought out plates from the cupboard. “The only person I am dating right now is Gbemiga.” Kike didn’t respond. She dished the food and carried her plate to the bed. She sat down and began to eat. Bukky sighed heavily. She dished her food and went to sit on the two settee. Her thoughts were centered on her boyfriend and her friend. |

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE Gbemiga sat on his bed in his off campus hostel, pondering over his life. His grades at school were okay, but, his relationship with God had gone downhill. He didn’t even recognize himself anymore. He had been lured back to his old habits since he broke up with his ex-girlfriend. He was drinking again and he went to the club almost every Friday night. He had lost count of the series of one night stands he had indulged in, in the past few months. He wasn’t happy and he wanted out. His parents and siblings were looking up to him. He couldn’t afford to smear the family’s name with mud and bring them shame. He clasped his hands together and closed his eyes. He began to ask God for forgiveness and mercy. He re-dedicated his life to Jesus and promised to live for his savior henceforth. He thanked God for accepting him back, regardless of his reckless living. He ended the prayer and opened his eyes. Amazingly, he felt better. It was as if a huge burden had been lifted off his shoulders. He decided to talk to God more often and pray daily. He lay on his side and thought of Bukky. He admired her stance to do things God’s way. He regretted the way he treated her and wished he had not deflowered her. Was it possible for her to forgive him and take him back? He still had feelings for her. Even after dating a few other girls, his affection for her never faded. He sighed heavily and closed his eyes. God, please give me a second chance with Bukky. xxxxxx Chike and Bukky sat on the leather chair, watching a movie. There was a bowl of popcorn on the stool in front of the chair and a pack of fruit juice. He turned towards her and grinned from ear to ear. He was counting down on the day he would finally ask her out and he was sure that her answer was going to be yes. “Why don’t you come with me to Owerri for the Christmas holiday?” She looked at him quickly, surprise written all over her face. “Come and spend the holiday with my family.” She blinked and stared at him. Was he serious? “It will be fun. I will take you on a tour to all my favourite places in Owerri.” She turned away. She wasn’t sure how his family would see her. Their son was almost a graduate and all she had was her First School Leaving Certificate. The thought that they might not approve their friendship scared her. “Maybe next year.” “Come on, please. I promise you a blast,” he tried to convince her. “Em… I am thinking of visiting my parents. I haven’t seen my siblings like forever. I want to spend time with them this Christmas.” He rolled his eyes. “Excuses, excuses, excuses. Do you know how much I am going to miss you?” She sighed, “Then stay with me in Lagos.” He gave a shake of head, “Owerri is much more exciting than Lagos during the festive period. Lagos will be too boring for me.” She rolled her eyes. “You are the only fun-thing for me around here. You make Lagos liveable.” The intensity of his stare made her look away. “Can I kiss you now? At least, you are now available and single.” “Stop it! Why do you like expensive jokes?” she eyed him. “Who is joking?” his firm gaze remained on her face. She raised an eyebrow and stared back at him, “I like you, you like me. The only thing stopping me from asking you out is the fact that I am waiting for you to completely get over your ex.” Her jaw dropped in amazement. “It’s being three months plus. How long do I need to wait?” She closed her mouth and dropped her gaze. Was she ready to start a new relationship? Was she completely over her ex? She really liked Chike and wished she met him before she started dating Gbemiga. “Your silence said it all. You need more time,” he returned his attention to the television. She raised her head and stared at him. He turned his head and met her intense gaze. She looked away quickly. “I will be travelling on the twenty-second.” “That’s three days away,” she turned to look at him. “I know.” She paled. She was really going to miss him. “Come with me.” “Next year.” “Suit yourself.” “I will see you off to the park.” He hissed, “It is either you follow me to Owerri or nowhere else.” “What’s doing you sef?” she eyed him. “Owerri, yes?” he battered his lashes at her. “No,” she folded her arms across her chest. “Fine. Next year is not that far away,” he picked up the pack of juice and drained the content. “Why did you finish it?” He dropped the empty pack on the stool. “Go and carry another one.” She hissed, “But, you know I like that flavor.” “Bukky, abeg, free me,” he leaned against the chair and stretched out. “Fine, watch the movie all by yourself. I am going home,” she got up abruptly. “Where do you think you are going?” “Home,” hands on her hips. “After eating my popcorn and drinking my juice?” She hissed, “You finished the juice.” “You better sit down before I go and buy koboko for you.” She hissed again and put on her slippers. “If you want to leave, you better vomit everything you have eaten.” “You are unwell.” “Really? I will show you how unwell I am.” The next thing she knew, Chike grabbed her by the waist and forced her to sit on the chair. “Chike! Leave me! Let me go this minute!” “Start vomiting my food, now!” He started to tickle her. She tried to run, but, didn’t get far. She fell on the bed, and he pinned her down with his weight. “I give up.” “I don’t believe you.” “I give up. Let me go.” “Beg me.” “Chike Nwosu please o, biko o, I am sorry. I am not going anywhere. I am staying right here with you.” He chuckled and smiled at her. “Oya get up,” she became aware of their awkward position. “I wish you can come home with me.” “Next year.” “I don’t want to go.” “Then stay.” “Maybe I will throw you into one of my suitcases and carry you off to Owerri.” She started to laugh, “Kidnapper mode activated.” He began to laugh too. Their gazes locked. The urge to kiss her overwhelmed him. The desire in his eyes made her heart beat to accelerate. It mirrored her exact frame of mind. “I think you should go.” She blinked in confusion. “I will see you off.” She stared back at him. She could bet on every penny in her bank account that he was going to kiss her a moment ago. What changed his mind? “I will never take what is not fully mine,” his whisper flooded her ears, “I cannot take what has not been freely given.” She swallowed hard. Her heart hammered against her chest, deafening her ears. “Kiss me.” His eyes widened in surprise. “I want you to kiss me.” He parted his lips then pressed it together. “I don’t want to start what I am not willing to finish. When we start dating, then, I will kiss you.” She blinked away her disappointment. “Even then, I cannot go beyond kissing you. I will honour God in our relationship.” She smiled happily, “I will have it no other way.” “Perfecto,” he pecked her on the forehead and got up quickly. Bukky lay on the bed and sighed with relief. Chike was simply God-sent to her. What was she going to do without him? |
CHAPTER TWENTY Chike returned to Lagos mid-September. His school had already resumed and he was now in his fourth year. The thought that he would be graduating the following year made him very happy. He made a lot of money while working for his uncle during the long holiday. He would be able to take care of himself till he returned home for the Christmas holiday. He missed Bukky. The fact that she was in a relationship with another made him to feel pained. He wished she was his. He hoped the distance he created between them had given her a different perspective about things. He believed that she would think twice before pushing him away next time. He didn’t pick her calls or replies her text messages because he was trying to prove a point, but, he wondered if he had taken it too far. What if she doesn’t want to speak with him again? He decided to visit her as soon as he was done parking and cleaning his apartment. The thought of seeing her flooded him with joy. He wished he could fly to her place that very moment. Xxxxxx Kike informed her niece that she was heading to church for a women’s programme. On her way out of the building, she met Chike walking in. They exchanged greetings and she went her way, wondering how many men was in her niece’s life. She knew about her affair with their neighbour’s first son. Who was Chike to her? Was she dating two people at the same time? She hoped the girl wasn’t playing games. At thirty-six, she was still single and understood how messy things could get. She made mistakes in her last relationship. She dated three men at the same time and while trying to decide who to spend the rest of her life with, they all discovered her folly and broke up with her. She prayed that her elder sister’s daughter wouldn’t make the same mistake. It was hard to find good men. Most of them were married. Chike stood by the door and knocked thrice. Bukky opened the door and gasped when she saw him. She had no idea that he was back in town. “Can I come in?” he seized her up. The slim black beauty had on a pink short-sleeve, knee-length skirt and a white sleeveless blouse. Her cleavage was in full view due to the V-shape of the neckline and her nipples pressed against the fabric. He could tell that she wasn’t putting on a bra. He tore his eyes away and concentrated on her hair. The wine and gold shoulder length wavy weave-on was in a half-pattern style. It made her pretty dark eyes to twinkle. She was shocked to find him at her doorstep. She thought he was still upset with her. After all, he alienated her when he travelled home. “Please come in,” she stepped back into the room. Chike walked in and sat on the two settee. Bukky shut the door and settled on a plastic chair, an arms- length away from the settee. “How have you been?” his dark brown eyes observed her. “I am…” she cleared her throat, “Fine… and you?” “I am good. I just got back, a few hours ago.” “Oh…” her dark eyes settled on his calm face. “I bought you a birthday gift,” he showed her a wrapped box. She stared at the gift, then back at him. It would be an understatement to say that she was surprised. “Happy birthday," he smiled at her. “Thank you,” she reached out and collected the box. What was in it? He leaned against the chair and turned towards the television. It was on the Zee World channel. Bukky unwrapped the box, tore it open and brought out a Nokia Express Music phone. Her eyes widened in shock and delight. She had been saving to get a camera phone, but, ended up spending the money to pay one bill or the other. “Thank you,” she directed her excited gaze at him. He glanced at her, “You are welcome,” their gazes locked, “I missed you.” She swallowed hard, “You… you didn’t pick my calls.” He sighed heavily, “I missed you so much that it hurt.” She blinked back the unshed tears, “You didn’t reply my messages.” “It’s so good to see you.” “You didn’t even tell me when you left.” The sadness in her eyes gnawed at him. “I am so sorry.” She dropped her gaze. She didn’t want to cry, but, she was overwhelmed with emotions she had been keeping in check for months. He got up, walked to her side and pulled her up to her feet. “I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you,” he wrapped his arms around her. She buried her face against his chest. The warmth of his nearness soothed her aching heart. “I missed you too,” she whispered. Her words warmed his heart. He felt elated. “I missed you more. I owe you a birthday outing” She raised her head and looked into his smiling eyes. “Where do you want to go?” She shrugged, “I don’t know.” “I have money. A lot of money. Just say the word, anything and your wish is my command.” She chuckled and just looked at him. She was glad that her friend was back. “My uncle paid me handsomely during the holidays. I am going to take care of you. Thank God that your boyfriend has gone back to school. I will have you all to myself,” he winked at her. She dropped her gaze and sighed heavily. “What is it?” he could sense that something was wrong. “We… we broke up,” she looked up at him. “You what?!” shock and relief flooded his veins, “When? Why? How?” a thousand thoughts ran through his mind. “Several weeks ago.” He frowned, “Why didn’t you tell me?” She eyed him, “I tried. You were avoiding me.” He scratched a spot on his head. He couldn’t believe that she was finally available. “What happened?” “We… we couldn’t agree on a lot of things.” “I see,” he kept on looking at her. She pulled away and sat on the settee. He joined her, eager for news. “He… he didn’t want to leave sex out of our relationship and I wanted to honour God with my body.” Chike shook his head in disappointment. “He used to see things my way, but, overtime, I don’t know,” she bit at her lower lip. “He is not serious. He needs serious beating, honest.” She heard the anger in his voice. She leaned against the chair and faced the television. He smiled with relief. He would give her time to get over her ex-boyfriend, then ask her out when the time was right. “I passed my Common Entrance Examinations,” she glanced at him. “Good, great. Congratulations!” “Thanks,” she smiled back at him. “Have you been given your First School Leaving Certificate?” She nodded quickly, “Yes.” “Cool. Now, no one dares call you an illiterate.” She started to laugh. “I have to run.” She blinked, “Now?” “Yes, darling,” he got up. “But, you just got here,” she got to her feet. “I need to clean my apartment. Everywhere is dusty. I can’t sleep like that.” She crossed her arms against her chest. “I will take you out this weekend, okay?” “O-kay,” she wished he didn’t have to leave so soon. He stared directly into her eyes and felt like drawing her close and kissing her. He erased the thought from his mind and started towards the door. “I will call you when I am through. We can stroll to that Mallam’s place and get suya.” “Okay,” she followed him to the door and they both walked out of the room. |

CHAPTER NINETEEN Bukky knocked on the door again. Was he home? Has he gone out? Maybe she should have called before coming. It had been a while since she had seen him. She missed him. She knocked and knocked, hoping that he was around. She heard the jingling of keys. She sighed with relief and took a step backwards. The door swung open. “Hi…” she broke into a smile. He just stared at her, his face expressionless. “Em… can I come in?” she didn’t understand why he just stood there looking at her. She could sense that he wasn’t prepared to move away from the door. “It depends,” he folded his arms across his chest. The red short-sleeve tee-shirt clung to his body like a second skin. She blinked. “The last time I saw you, you told me to leave you alone.” “I was just…” she swallowed hard. His cold stare made her heart to lurch. She must have hurt him that day. “I thought we were friends…” “We are…” He shook his head, “I have reasons to believe that you wish to live in your own little world alone.” “No! No… look, I am sorry. That day, I wasn’t…” “Your sorry cannot solve anything right now,” he looked her up and down. The sky blue cap-sleeve, V-neck, knee-length A-shaped dress fitted her perfectly. “Please, let’s go in and talk,” her pleading eyes remained on his firm face. He eyed her, “Now you want to talk.” She shifted on both feet. Was she going to lose him too? She had just broken up with Gbemiga. They had a huge argument earlier on because she didn’t come to meet him at the back of the kitchen. He said a lot of hateful things to her and she ended their relationship. He exploded. She had never seen him that angry. She cared less at first, but, now, she felt lonely and distressed. “Are we… are we still friends?” her lips trembled. “I am not sure.” She sucked in breath and looked straight into his undaunted eyes. “I am kind of busy at the moment. Next time, call me before you come knocking at my door.” “Chike…” her dark eyes smarted with unshed tears. “You said I should leave you alone.” She gave a shake of head, “I didn’t mean it,” she whispered. “That day, you did. I am just following your orders,” he backed into the room and slammed the door. She trembled. A tear slipped down her dark oval face, followed by another, then another, till her face was flooded. Maybe it was a good thing that she was alone. She could focus on herself and God. She turned on her heel and headed home. Chike watched her through the window. He felt he had to send her away. She cannot eat her cake and have it. She cannot decide to want him one minute and reject him the next minute. He wasn’t a pendulum bob. He refused to be tossed around like a basket-ball. He wasn’t toilet paper either. He wouldn’t allow her to use him whenever she felt she needed him and push him away whenever she desired. He was valuable and she must learn to treat him that way. His chest tightened. He didn’t feel good at all. His heart ached for her. He thought his feelings for her would die a natural death, but, it kept on growing with each new day. It was crowding his mind, filling his thoughts and distracting him. She wasn’t even available. She had a boyfriend. Why pine over someone he might never have? Maybe he might travel sooner than he planned. The farther he was from her, the better. There was no need for them to celebrate their birthdays together. He would only be hurting himself. xxxxxx Gbemiga organized a party on his twenty-first birthday. Many of his friends and course mates came around to celebrate with him. His mother and sisters cooked while his father bought drinks and hired a DJ. None of their neighbours were invited. Most of them remained in their rooms while others stood around the building, watching the young adults make merry under the wide canopy. Bukky stayed in the room with her aunt, but, she couldn’t concentrate on the soap opera they were watching. The loud music played at the party outside the house echoed through the walls. She hoped the landlady would drive them away soon. The woman gave them till midnight to wrap up the party. She glanced at the wall clock and groaned. It was just past nine. It was her nineteenth birthday and there was no one except her aunt to celebrate with. Her ex-boyfriend was having fun at his party and her friend, Chike was MIA. She couldn’t believe that he travelled home to Owerri without letting her know. Why was he taking their disagreement that far? She tried to call to apologize, but, he doesn’t even pick her calls. She also tried texting him, but, he sent no replies. Why was he so upset with her? She hoped that things would return to norm when he returned to Lagos after the long holiday. He had really been a good friend to her and she doesn’t want to lose him. Suddenly, she felt like going to the toilet. She got up in a hurry, slipped on her Dunlop slippers and hurried out of the room. Lucky for her, the toilet was empty. Fifteen minutes later, she stood outside by the tap, washing her hands. On her way back into the building, she heard voices. The sound was coming from the back of the kitchen. Out of curiosity, she tip-toed to the area and peeped. She saw her ex-boyfriend butt naked, slamming into one of the girls that came for his party. The girl’s chest was bare and her jeans lay at her feet. The sight disgusted her. She half-ran and half-walked back to her aunt’s room. Her eyes pooled with tears. It hurt that it didn’t take him long to find another hole to lodge his lustful groin. She threw herself on the bed and covered her head with a pillow. Why was she even crying? It was over between them. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Why was she feeling so hurt? Why do her heart ache so bad? Hasn’t she gotten over him completely? She wished Chike was still around. He would have been able to advice and comfort her. |
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN Gbemiga returned home for the long holiday. His family were very happy that he would be in his second year by the next session. When he was able to get away from them, he searched for his girlfriend. He was eager to see her. He missed her greatly. He saw her when he came out of the building. She was in the company of her aunt and her sales girls. He tried to signal and gain her attention, but, she intentionally disregarded him. “Why is Gbemiga moving around us like a pendulum bob?” Kike eyed the young man. The girls giggled. “He is trying to get my attention,” Bukky informed her aunt. Kike stared at her niece, “Why?” She met her aunt’s curious gaze, “We are friends.” “Friends?” she raised an eyebrow, then glanced at Gbemiga who was standing at the entrance of the building, looking their way. “What kind of friends?” Bukky returned her inquisitive stare, then glanced at the girls. Kike could discern what the girl wasn’t saying. “Since when?” “Last year.” Her eyes widened in surprise, “Under my nose?” Bukky dropped her head and continued to sieve the corn pap. “You are a big girl,” she cleared her throat, “But, you must be very careful and wise. Boys of nowadays are not trustworthy. Don’t disappoint your parents, don’t disobey God and don’t come home pregnant.” She lifted her eyes and met her aunt’s warning ones. “You can go. I don’t like the way he is parading us like a jelly fish.” The girls bursted out laughing. “Laughing gas!” she glared at them, “Both of you should better sieve all this corn pap fast,” she eyed them. The girls kept quiet, but, giggled. Bukky got to her feet, washed her hands in a bowl of clean water and strode to the entrance of the building. Gbemiga beamed, “Hi.” “Hi… welcome back.” “Thanks. Can we talk?” She nodded. “Let’s go to the back of the kitchen.” Her brows came together in a frown. “No, we can talk here.” He looked around him, “Out here?” “Yes. I will get a bench.” “No! Wait…” he thought of his parents and siblings. What would they say if they say him talking to her outside the house? “Look, I have already told my aunt about us.” “You did what?!” he threw a glance at Kike. Her stern stare was directed his way. He glanced back at his girlfriend. She crossed her arms against her chest and looked up at him, “I don’t want a secret relationship. You better make up your mind. It is either everyone knows about us or we end it, now!” Her ultimatum didn’t go down well with him, but, he wasn’t prepared to lose her, “Let’s talk, okay? I have really missed you.” She hissed, “When you are ready to talk, you know where to find me,” she turned around. “Wait…” he said through gritted teeth. She faced him. “Wait here. I will get a bench.” “Fine.” He hurried into the house. Bukky heaved a sigh of relief and leaned against the wall. He returned in a moment and placed a long wooden bench against the wall. They both sat down. She noticed a set of children under twelve playing a game of soccer under the scorching sun. “How was your examination?” she glanced at him. “Fine, but, you didn’t even call me to wish me success,” a sad glint appeared in his eyes. “I am sorry.” “Did you block my number on your phone?” She looked away. “Do you even love me at all? Do you even know the meaning of love?” She turned her head and saw how hurt he looked. “What I did is called tough love?” “Tough love?! What sort of relationship are we having if we cannot even communicate especially when we are apart?” She swallowed hard. “Three months. Three months Bukky and I didn’t hear from you. I couldn’t even reach you.” He was right. Maybe she took the whole thing too far. “What exactly do you want Bukky?” “You are right. We do not talk. We just touch each other when…when…when we are supposed to be building this relationship.” He frowned, “But, physical intimacy is important and necessary in every relationship. I am not a Priest; neither are you a Nun.” She looked him up and down, “We are not married. We shouldn’t be…” “Come on now. You are not a baby.” She stared at him as if she was seeing him for the first time, “Sex before marriage is totally wrong.” “I know, I know, but, even God himself will understand.” She dropped her jaw in shock. “Let’s go to the back of the kitchen. I want to feel you. I have really, really missed you,” he winked at her. She suddenly felt repulsed by him. It dawned on her that they were not going to agree on that particular issue. “I will go first,” he got up, “Join me in the next five, then minutes.” She gave a shake of head, “I am not coming.” He eyed her, “Why are you making things difficult for us?” “How many minutes have we spoken? You talk of lack of communication, but, here you are, you are already thinking of touching me.” He hissed, “Stop behaving like a child and come and meet me at the back of the kitchen.” “God gave us self-control for a lot of reasons.” He eyed her, “I have self-control.” “Then use it.” “I will be waiting for you,” he turned to leave. “Why can’t we just sit here and talk? I have so many things to tell you. I want to hear all about your experiences at school. Let’s talk.” “I am waiting,” he strode off. She watched him leave. What has she gotten herself into? She pressed her lips together and sighed loudly. She realized that they might not be able to move forward with their disagreement hanging over their heads. It would be better if they broke up and get on with their lives. |
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN Bukky instructed her sales girls on how to sell the bean cake, bread and corn pap. She had just increased the prices of her wares and her customers were already complaining. It wasn’t her fault. Everyone knew how hard things had become in the country. Everything from foodstuff to social amenities had gone up. At times, she wondered how people were coping. Taking her compound for example, she noticed that most families barely ate thrice a day. Breakfast and dinner had become the order of the day. Many avoided coming to the kitchen because they did not want others to know what they were cooking. The landlady warned her tenants that anyone caught cooking in their rooms would be sent packing, but, people paid no attention to her. She hoped that the situation of things in the country would change for better soonest. The masses were suffering while a few people squandered the nation’s wealth. She wished super heroes like Superman and Captain American were really in existence. The country needed to be rescued from the fangs of greedy and selfish people who think of themselves and loath the common man. She did a quick estimate of how much she might earn that day and left her sales girls in charge. She wasn’t going to be around. She was taking her examinations that morning at the Adult Education Centre. If she passed, she would be issued her First School Leaving Certificate. If she failed, she would be asked to retake the examinations over and over again, until she passed it. Initially she had been afraid, but, after series of study section with Chike, she became confident. She was sure that she was going to pass. She had also prayed and asked God for success. Although she was nervous, she believed that everything would work out for her own good. xxxxxx Gbemiga called his girlfriend’s number again and again, but, he couldn’t reach her. He was beginning to suspect that she probably blocked his line. Why did she do something like that? Was it because they slept together? At least, he didn’t force himself on her. She gave him access. What did she expect? They were not made of wood. They had emotions and desires. The thought that she had actually barred his number on her phone infuriated him. He threw his phone on the bed and leaned against the wall. He loved the girl. He craved for her in such insatiable way each time he was alone with her. She was like a drug he was addicted to. The God that made the rules that unmarried people should avoid sleeping with one another would definitely understand that it was a near-impossible task. He hoped his girlfriend would come around soon. He was finding it hard to resist the advances of girls in his class and those that live in his hostel building. If Bukky kept giving him a hard time, he might eventually turn to these girls for sexual satisfaction. After all, they were around him almost every day, while his girlfriend avoided him most time during the holidays. There were times he wondered why he asked her out in the first place. The initial feelings he had for her were beginning to wear off. Come to think of it, does he really love her? Or was he just driven by the fact that she wasn’t an easy prey like the girls he was used to? xxxxxx Bukky returned home tired and hungry. She met her aunt’s absence. The woman sent her a text earlier that she had an occasion to attend and might not return home until the next day. She had her bath and changed into a white sleeveless knitted blouse and a pair of blue knee length shorts. She prepared a meal of plantain flour, popularly called amala, and ewedu soup with meat stew. She settled on the carpet floor, in front of the flat screen television and ate with relish. She finished the meal in a matter of minutes, set the plates aside, washed her hands and returned to her position in front of the television. It’s been a while since she had the television all to herself. Whenever her aunt was around, the woman colonized the T.V set. She heard the knocks on the door and groaned. She got up and dragged her feet to the front door. She turned the key and opened the door. She gasped in surprise when she found her friend by the doorway. “Hello stranger,” he smiled at her. “Chike…” “Where have you been?” he walked into the room, She scratched a spot on her head and closed the door. “Every time I come to your shed, I meet your sales girls,” he sat on the plastic chair adjacent to the television. Bukky returned to her spot in front of the television, “I had exams.” “Oh…” he searched her face, “I didn’t know that you have started.” “Four papers to go.” “Nice, my second semester examination is starting next week.” She met his gaze, “Good luck.” “Thanks. How has the examination been?” She shrugged, “More or less like what we have been taught and drilled with for months.” “Okay,” his eyes remained on her face. “I believe that I am going to pass. God owes me a birthday gift.” “Oh really? See levels,” her confidence gladdened his heart. He had been a bit worried about her. She laughed lightly and returned her attention to the T.V screen. “You and Zee World,” he eyed the T.V set. “I use it to relax,” she defended her actions. He rolled his eyes. “You and Sports channel,” she turned to look at him. “It is better than all these fictional pretentious non-existence love portrayed on Televista, Telemundo, Zee World and what not.” She rolled her eyes. “Have you called your boyfriend and wished him luck in his examinations?” She blinked and turned her head. She didn’t want to talk about Gbemiga. She had a lot of things to iron out with him when he returned home for the long holiday. “Bukky…” “Hmm…” she looked up at him. “What is it?” he sensed that something was bothering her. She shook her head. He got up and came to sit by her side, “Bukky…” “Chike, I am not in the mood.” “You know that you can always talk to me,” he observed her pale face. “I am fine. He is fine. We are fine.” He raised an eyebrow. Doubt clouded his face. “Bukky…” She hissed, got up and went to the bed. She lay down, hoping that he would get the message and leave. “Bukky…” he got up and came to sit by her side. “Chike go away!” she lashed out at him and turned on her side, facing the wall, “I said I am not in the mood.” He stared at the back of her head, sighed heavily and got up. He found his way out of the room and shut the door. xxxxxx Bukky stood with a group people in front of the notice board. She scanned the white sheet listed with names of students who wrote the Common Entrance examination. She found her name and saw the bolded letters beside it ‘PASSED’. She screamed with joy and pulled away from the crowd. God had answered her prayers. He had just given her an early birthday gift. She looked up and stared at the blue sky, face brightened with joy. Her dream of getting educated was unfolding in leaps and bounds. She pulled her phone out of her jeans pocket and called her mother. The woman was excited and impressed that her daughter was leaving the illiterate class. Soon she would be able to boast and tell all who cared to listen that her daughter was now educated. She thought of calling Chike, but, wasn’t sure if he would pick her call. It had been a while since he came to her shed. She had a feeling that he might be upset at the way she treated him the last time he visited. She heard from students in the area that the second semester examination had already started. Maybe he was probably busy studying. She missed his company. She hoped that he wasn’t angry with her. |
CHAPTER SIXTEEN Chike walked down the street. He thought of taking a cold shower once he got home. It had been a tiring day at school. The second semester had just begun and the lecturers were already intimidating them with stressful assignments and group projects. He was running out of funds and might need to ask his parents or his elder brother for financial assistance. Preferably the latter. His parents were taking care of his younger siblings and most times, he didn’t like disturbing them. They were four in number, three boys and a girl. His elder brother was working for his uncle while he awaited his call off letter and he had been very supportive. His younger brother was in his second year, and his younger sister was in her first year. They were both in Imo State University. His younger sister, the last child of his parents, was the age mate of Bukky. If they met, he believed that they would become good friends. He brought out his phone from his pocket and dialed his elder brother’s number. It rang for a while. “Hello...” “Hello bros.” “Chike, how now?” “I dey bros.” “How Lag? How school?” “Lag dey there. Na school matter make me call sef.” “I no get money like that.” “Ah bros. Abeg o. Nothing is too small.” “I just got my call up letter yesterday and I need to prepare for camp.” Eyes brightened, “Where are you posted?” “Abuja.” “Wow!” “I need all the money I can lay my hands on.” “Congrats.” “Thanks. I will try and send you something before weekend.” Sighed in relief, “Thanks bros.” “Hope you are coming home for the long hols.” “I think so.” “Don’t think. Come home. You can replace me at uncle’s place and earn some cash this summer before returning to school.” “That’s true o.” “You know dad and mum already have their hands full.” Nodded, “Yes, I know. I rarely ask them for anything these days.” “Anyhow, man pikin go survive.” “Yes o.” “Later now.” “Yeah, thanks bros.” “Okay.” The line went dead. He slipped the phone back into his pocket. “Fine boy.” He heard the voice. He recognized it and broke into a smile. He knew exactly who it was. He kept on walking, but, he slowed his pace. “Fine boy stop there!” He started to laugh and glanced back. He saw her sauntering towards him. Straight jeans, white tube blouse, black cap-sleeve jacket, and a pink knapsack strapped to her left shoulder. Her pink gladiator sandals had silver sequins spread around it, giving it a unique look. Her smooth black hair was packed behind her neck in a pony-tail. It looked retouched. She looked fresh and pretty, like the flowers on the screen saver of his laptop. His dark brown eyes grew warm, lingering over her with intensity. She caught up with him, “You! I haven’t been seeing you at my shed. You just disappeared. Have you found another akara seller,” she placed her hands on her curvy hips. He gave a shake of head and grinned. They fell into steps and walked homewards. “I leave for school earlier than usual these days.” “Oh…” “How are you preparing for your Common Entrance Examinations?” She paled, “I am scared to the bones.” He glanced at her, “Hey…” he placed a hand around her shoulder, “You know I am here for you.” She sighed heavily and nodded. “I will assist you in every way I can, okay?” She met his kind eyes, “Okay.” He smiled at her and she smiled back at him. “Has your boyfriend gone back to school?” She turned her head, “Yes.” Her emotionless voice got to him, “Have you guys reconciled?” “Yes,” her tone was flat. He looked worried, “You sound like both of you are still fighting.” She heaved a tired sigh. She didn’t see her boyfriend the day he returned to school. She practically avoided him since the night he had his way with her at the back of the kitchen. She barred his number on her phone so that he wouldn’t be able to reach her. She didn’t want to communicate with him until he returned home for the long holiday. Then, they would decide whether to kill the relationship and move on or rescue it before it disintegrate into nothingness. She didn’t want a secret relationship. She didn’t want a relationship based on only physical intimacy. They hardly talk. Every time they were alone, things got complicated. Maybe she wasn’t ready for a relationship or was she asking for too much? “Bukky…” he noticed her distracted look, “Bukky…” “Hmm…” she turned to look at him. “A penny for your thoughts.” “What about a dollar?” she grinned from ear to ear. “See thief,” he eyed her. She started to laugh. “I am going home for the long holiday.” “Owerri.” “Yes. My elder brother has just gotten his call up letter and I am going to replace him at my uncle’s firm.” “Oh… okay. Where was he posted?” “Abuja.” “Wow! He is lucky.” “Yea. Next year, I hope to do my industrial training at Chevron, Mobil…” “Shell or Texaco,” Bukky chimed in. “Exactly,” he winked at her. “I will miss you.” “Same here. Anyway, I am not going anywhere until we celebrate our birthdays together. I am going to borrow you from your boyfriend.” She chuckled, “He will fight you.” “Let him try. I will finish him,” he boasted. “We shall see,” she halted in front of her house. “I will create time so that I can revise your notes with you before your examination.” Her eyes shone with joy, “I will really love that.” “What are friends for?” he smiled at her. “Thanks.” “You must repay me with bean cake for a whole week.” “See thief,” she eyed him. He started to laugh, “The bible says he that does not work should not eat.” She hissed, “You are not serious.” “I am,” he rubbed his belly, “I am so hungry.” “Pele…” “Later now,” he backed away. “Yea… later.” “I will call you.” “Okay.” He waved and headed off in the opposite direction. She stood there, watching him, till he faded. She sighed, turned around and went into the building. She thanked God for sending her a really good friend. What was she going to do without him? |

CHAPTER FIFTEEN Bukky went to the back of the building to switch off the generator. The electric power had just been restored in the area. Many people had been running alternative current for three days straight. It was pathetic that the electric power authourity in the country were acting like dictators. The masses do not get what they paid for and everyone was suffering because the federal government couldn’t even interfere. They were definitely in bed with whoever was in charge of the generation and supply of electricity. On her way back into the house, she met Gbemiga. She had been avoiding him for days. What he said on that faithful day still rang in her head and made her chest tighten in pain. She tried to walk past him, but he stopped her. “Please, I will like to have a word with you,” his dark eyes were fixed on her averted ones. “It is late. We will talk tomorrow,” she looked up at the darken sky. “Bukky please, I am returning to school in a few days.” She dropped her gaze and met his pleading ones. “Please,” he begged. She folded her arms across her chest. “Please, let’s go over there,” he pointed towards the back of the kitchen. Without a word, she turned around and walked towards the kitchen. She remembered Chike’s threat. He promised to deal with her boyfriend if he ever tried to force himself on her again. Gbemiga sighed with relief. He had been looking for an opportunity to speak with her since she stopped picking his calls or replying his messages. He followed her to the back of the kitchen. “Bukky, I love you. I didn’t mean to speak harshly to you that day. I was just protecting what is mine. I don’t trust that guy, Chike, or any other guy in this area. You don’t know how it feels like being in school, while your girlfriend is at home. The distance is killing me.” She frowned, “You hurt me.” “I know and I am sorry. Please forgive me,” he reached out for her hands. “Chike is a nice guy, he is just a friend,” she tried to convince him. He dropped her hands, “No guy is just a friend,” his frustrated stare remained on her oval face. Bukky shrugged. She was tired of explaining herself, “He is just a friend.” He sensed her unwavering stance. He swallowed hard. It would be difficult to keep her away from her so called friend. “Okay. Fine. Have it your way.” She raised an eyebrow, weary of his capitulation. “Just make sure he remains just a friend,” his warning look drilled into her smiling ones. “Chike is a good boy. He is not like other guys in the area.” He wasn’t convinced, “If you say so.” She took a few steps backwards and leaned against the rough wall, “I cannot believe that the holiday is over.” He took her by the hand, “I wish it will continue.” “Do they know that we are going out?” she looked straight at him. He blinked, “Who?” “Your parents, siblings.” He began to shake his head, “Does your aunt know?” “No,” she turned her head and saw a few fire flies close to the roof of the kitchen. He sighed with relief. “When are we going to tell them?” she watched the flies. He let go of her hand and scratched a spot on his head, “Soon.” “How soon?” she glanced back at him. “I don’t think it is a good time.” She eyed him, “So, when will the good time be…” “Why do you want them to know?” he cut in. She frowned, “Why are we having a secret affair?” He turned aside. The conversation he had with his parents replayed on his mind. They didn’t want him to associate with the likes of her. How was he supposed to introduce her to them as his girlfriend? He would wait till they have a change of heart, then; he would be able to tell them. “I am going to tell my aunt. You need to let your family know that we are dating,” she informed him. His heart missed a beat. “Bukky wait, wait…” She saw the uncertainty in his eyes. What was he afraid of? “By August, our relationship will clock a year. I will be nineteen and you will be twenty-one by then. We are not babies,” she stressed the last sentence. “I know, I know, but…” “Are you ashamed of me?” she looked directly into his panic stricken eyes. “No, no! Of course not. I love you,” he assured her. She breathed out loudly in relief. “It is just that…” how was he going to explain to her? “My family… they are sought of hyped with the fact that I am now in the university.” She raised an eyebrow. She wasn’t surprised. She also noticed the way they carried themselves around the neighbourhood. “They are trying to dictate who I should relate with…” She narrowed her gaze and folded her arms. “I will tell them, but, now is not a good time.” She disagreed with him, “Now is definitely the right time. I need to know what I am getting myself into.” He placed his hands on her shoulders and drew her closer, “Baby, I promise you, I will let them know.” “When?” she fixed her eyes on him. “When I return home for the next vacation.” She wasn’t pleased with his decision. “Please, try and hold off on telling your aunt about us,” he pleaded. “Fine,” she forced the words out of her mouth. He brightened, “Thank you.” She turned away from him, “I have to go in.” He paled. He thought they would stay out there and talk for a while. “My aunt will be wondering where I went to after putting off the generator.” He held her by the elbow, “You are not a baby.” She raised an eyebrow, “It is past ten.” “Aunty Kike knows that you are a big girl.” Bukky couldn’t stop the laughter that bubbled through her. Gbemiga noticed the way her pretty dark eyes lit up as she laughed and her dark skin seemed to glow under the moonlight. His steady stare ran down her slim frame, settling on her cleavage which was slightly exposed by the blue short-sleeve v-neck blouse she was putting on. The brown and red print wrapper shaped her curvy sides, giving her an attractive look. He felt like taking her into his arms and caressing every inch of her body. The memories of their kisses intoxicated him like sweet wine. His best ones were on the day he deflowered her. He hoped to experience the moist deepness of her inner core again. She stopped laughing when she saw the desire in his eyes. She had seen that look before. “I really need to go now.” “Bukky…” he restrained her movement and pushed her against the wall. “What are you doing?” her heart beat accelerated. “I love you…” he leaned forward and kissed her. She turned her head away, breaking off her lips from his wet ones. She must resist him. She willed her hands to push for freedom, but, she felt weakened with the desires building within her. “I love you so much…” he planted kisses on her forehead, her cheeks, her jaw, her neck and around her shoulders. “Pleeeasee… stop,” she struggled with the emotions exploding within her. He claimed her lips again and kissed her until she responded. His hands slid down her spine, till it settled on her soft, firm, backside. He grabbed and squeezed it, rubbing his hardened groin against her. She trembled against him, wishing he would stop and let her go. She wanted to fight him off, but, her brain was fried and her mind had melted like butter on a hot pan. Gbemiga tugged at her wrapper until it came loose and fell at her feet. He slipped his hands underneath her blouse and fondled her bare flesh. She jerked and pressed her hands against his chest. “Stop… don’t…” she tried to push him away. He held her firmly against the wall and slipped his fingers into her underwear. “Gbemi!” she panicked. He turned a deaf ear on her pleas, driven by his own lust, he grouped her. “Gbemiga…please…” she dug her nails into his shoulders and tried to withstand the intense sexual desire gathering momentum within her. Taken over by passion, he yanked off her underwear and charged into her like a bull on heat. Pain and pleasure spread through her like wild fire. She couldn’t shout, she couldn’t cry. It was all her fault. She shouldn’t have allowed him to touch her in the first place. She closed her eyes and waited for it to end. Gbemiga cried out and pulled out of her quickly. His breath came fast and hard. He staggered backwards and drew the condom off his skin, satisfaction was written all over his face. Bukky picked up her wrapper, tied it around her waist and fled. |
