BUKKY ALAKARA by SERAH IYARE

Bukky Folorunsho had to move in with her aunt due to the challenges her parents were facing. She had no formal education and the search for her daily bread was nightmarish.
Gbemiga Phillips was the first child and only son of his parents. His family believed that he was destined to bring them out of poverty.
Like ripples, the different seasons they encountered in their lives spun several unstoppable events that led to a cascading end.

CHAPTER FORTY-NINE

Remi and her daughters sat on a bench outside their apartment. It was past six and the last time they ate was that morning. They all shared a loaf of bread and filled their stomach with water. Father and son left the house in search of job opportunities. Remi hoped that one of them would come home with good news. It had been nine weeks since her son returned home and he had not been able to find work. The boy was unhappy and distressed. He blamed himself for what happened to him. If he had seen Abisoye for who she was, he wouldn’t have associated with her in the first place.

Remi sighed heavily. If they had not quit their jobs, they wouldn’t be in the situation they were in. At least, they would be able to eat two square meals daily. Her husband had gone back to his former employer, but, the man had already hired a new security guard. The factory she and her daughters used to work as cleaner couldn’t take them back either. Their positions had been filled. There were so many unemployed people in the country and the vacancies available wouldn’t suffice.

Lola and Kemi stared at nothing in particular. They were hungry. They hoped that their father and brother would bring them something to eat. They dreaded going to bed on empty stomach. If only Gbemiga had not lost his job, they wouldn’t be in their present condition. They cursed the day he met Abisoye Da Silva.

“Is that not Bukky Alakara?” Remi saw the lady coming into the compound through the gate. She was carrying two blue and yellow Bagco sacks.

Lola and Kemi followed their mother’s gaze and saw their brother’s ex-boyfriend.

“What is she doing here?” Remi glanced at her daughters.

Lola shrugged, “Maybe she is visiting someone.”

Remi raised an eyebrow, “Who is she friend’s with in this compound?”

Kemi hissed and held her tummy, “Who cares?”

Bukky approached the trio. “Good evening ma.”

Remi looked her up and down. The girl seemed to have added weight. She also looked healthy and pretty.

“Lola, Kemi, hi…” she smiled at her ex-boyfriend’s sisters.

The girls stared at her, wondering what she wanted.

“Gbemiga told me that he lost his job. I know how difficult things can get. My family have been in this kind of situation and, I… I thought that em… these is for the family,” she dragged the bags to Remi’s side.

The woman looked into the bags and gasp. It contained foodstuffs. Lola and Kemi got up and began to search the bags. They found tubers of yam, sweet potato, plantain, beans, rice, garri, semolina, blended melon seeds, ogbonna, crayfish, dry pepper, salt, Maggi, frozen full chicken, tilapia fish, tomato, tatashe and rodo.

“I pray that the God who helped my family and I will also show up for you all.”

Remi looked up at her. Eyes glistered with tears. “God will bless you.”

“Amen ma.”

“Sister Bukky, thank you o,” Lola grinned at her.

“Thank you so much. God will continue to increase you on all sides,” Kemi added.

“Amen,” she smiled back at them, “I used to have four sales girls, but, one of them has relocated and the other just got married. Her husband stays in Mafolukun. If you won’t mind, you can work for me till you get something better to do,” she addressed the girls.

Lola and Kemi glanced at their astonished mother, then back at their brother’s ex-girlfriend.

“You can think about it,” she added quickly.

“Think about what? There is nothing to think about,” Lola assured her.

“When can we start?” Kemi stared at her in excitement.

“What about tomorrow morning?”

“Perfect!” the girls chorused.

“Okay. I will be leaving home by seven.”

“We will be at your doorstep before seven,” Kemi said quickly.

“Okay. See you then,” she glanced at their mother, “Please extend my greetings to daddy and Gbemiga.”

“They will hear. Thank you my daughter.”

“Thank God ma,” she turned to the girls, “Later.”

“All right.”

“Thank you.”

Bukky turned around and headed for the gate. The moment she was out of ear-shot, the girls started to sing and dance.

Remi folded her arms and looked heavenwards. God had used the girl they disapproved to meet their needs. Did they make a mistake when they fought against her relationship with their son?

Xxxxxx

Gbemiga knocked on the door again. He was sure that she was home. He could hear the television. When he got home that night, his mother and sisters told him that his ex-girlfriend brought them foodstuff. For the first time in several weeks, they ate a good meal. His father claimed that what Bukky brought was worth over ten thousand naira. His family were grateful and completely taken by surprise. It was hard to believe that the very person they despised supported them in their time of need.

Everyone else turned away from them, including family and close friends. No one wanted to associate with failure.

The door opened, “Oh… hi… come in,” she backed into the apartment.”

He walked in and went to sit on the two setter.

“How was your day?” she adjusted her wrapper and sat on the bed.

“It was okay. I was given employment at Aiico Insurance as a marketer.”

“Wow!” she brightened, “Congratulations.”

“Thank you. I will be starting next week. God did it. Out of more than four hundred candidates, I was among the fifteen people that were chosen.”

“God is great!” she sighed with relief. She had been worried about him.

“I came to thank you for the foodstuff,” he looked straight at her.

She smiled, “My little contribution.”

He shook his head, “That wasn’t a little contribution. You are one of the few people that has supported us in this time of crisis.”

She turned to the television and sighed.

“God will bless and increase you mightily.”

“Amen.”

“Thank you for also employing my sisters. At least, they will be able to contribute their quota. I won’t be the only one bearing the burden of taking care of the family.”

She glanced at him and smiled. She noticed how his eyes glistened with tears.

“We are all grateful. After how we all treated you…”

She raised a hand, “Hey… that is all in the past.”

“Regardless…”

“It is okay Gbemiga. I am just being my brother’s keeper.”

“Thank you.”

“Thank God.”

Their gazes locked. Gbemiga wished that his family had approved their relationship in the first place. Things would have turned out well for them.

He wondered if there was an iota of hope for them.

Bukky cleared her throat and got up, “It is rather late. I need to be at the shop very early in the morning.”

He nodded and got up. “Bukky…”

“Goodnight…”

They spoke at the same time. She chuckled and looked up at him. “What?”

“Bukky, is it possible?” he took some steps closer, “Is there a chance that we…”

She began to shake her head, “I am going to get married in a few months’ time.”

“Bukky…” he closed the gap between them, “I never stopped loving you,” he reached out for her hands.

She sighed heavily, “I don’t love you anymore.”

“Don’t say that,” he paled.

“It is the truth. I used to love you, but, my heart belongs to someone else now.”

“Give me one more chance. I believe that this time around, everything will work out fine.”

She shook her head. “I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“I love Chike and I am going to marry him in December.”

He pulled her into his arms, “I know that there is still a part of you that loves me.”

“Stop deceiving yourself. My whole heart belongs to another. No atom of me pines for you.”

He stared at her long and hard. The confidence in her eyes mirrored her resolve.

“Let me go.”

“I can’t…”

“Yes, you can. I believe that someday, soon, you will find your damsel in distress.”

“Bukky…”

“Let me go…” she pulled away from him and stepped back.

“Bukky…”

“Good night Gbemiga. I wish you all the best.”

He sighed heavily and walked out with slow steps. The tears he had been holding back streamed down his dark face. He couldn’t believe that he had finally lost her.

Shewrite my first time of reading anything on Nairaland Literature, never before till this story was put on front page. Intact I don't read novels only motivation, business development and inspirational books.
I have to say, I have never ever come across a story this good. You are indeed greatly talented. Have you thought about publishing this particular Bukky story??

I also think this story can be turned into a very good movie. Getting the right characters for Bukky, Gbemiga Chike etc. It can turn to blockbuster if well packaged. I might be interested in turning this story into a movie. I will send you message to your facebook page. I already follow you on Facebook.

Concerning this work: I think this story is about Bukky and Gbemiga not Chike. Bukky is the helper ordained for Gbemiga. There destinies are intertwined and they are made for each other....that is what I think. I never liked Gbemiga but after reading the last two chapters I came to that understanding. I may be wrong though.

But SheWrites you are Genius in the making. Keep it up

Thanks. Am interested in the movie plan.

This story will also be on okadabooks.

I will post the link later.

CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

Bukky carried the bucket of wet clothes out of the bathroom and headed out. She strolled to the back of the building and searched for space on the long line. She moved some of her neighbour’s clothes which were already dried and began to spread hers. A smile spread on her face. She was super excited because her fiancé called about two hours ago. He shared the news that he would be coming home in less than four months. He had also given her the go ahead to resume the plans for their traditional and church wedding. They were going to have a Christmas wedding. It would be so romantic. She couldn’t wait. Finally, she was going to see the man her heart beat for and tie the knot with him. God was good. God had been really good to her and she would be eternally grateful.

When she called her parents to inform them, they were beyond ecstatic. They promised to make sure that everything was ready and perfect by the time Chike arrived. She also called his parents and they intimated her that they had been informed. They would be working with her parents to make sure that her wedding turned out well without a hitch.

“Am in love, am in love, am in love. Am in love, am in love, am in love. Sweet Holy Spirit, am in love,” she began to hum the tune of her favourite song.

“Have you heard?”

“Heard what?”

Two of her neighbours came out of the building and stood by the fence. Bukky heard them and turned. It was two of the single girls living in the compound.

“Good afternoon.”

“Afternoon,” they chorused.

She returned her attention to the clothes she was spreading on the wire.

“Gbemiga is around.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, na. I saw him with my own eyes.”

“What is he doing back in Lagos? I thought he got a job in Abuja after he completed his service year.”

Her friend clapped her hands in excitement, “So, I heard. I heard that he was sacked.”

The other covered her mouth with a hand, “Are you sure?”

“He has been home for more than two weeks. What is he doing back home if he truly has a job in Abuja?”

Her friend nodded in agreement, “You are right.”

“Do you know that he and his family have moved back to that self-contain apartment beside the Nepa pole?”

“What?! What happened to their three bedroom flat?”

“One of their neighbours told me that they made a bargain with the landlord that if they could find a new tenant, he would give them the balance of the money they paid.”

“Ah-han! What is going on?”

“They paid for two years and they have only lived there for about ten months.”

“So, did they find a new tenant?”

“Sharp, sharp,” she laughed.

“So, that means they needed the money.”

“Not just that. I guess, since Gbemiga came home jobless, they reasoned that they won’t be able to afford the place. While wait till their rent expire?”

Her friend nodded her head, “Smart plan. They shouldn’t have moved there in the first place. They should have waited till Gbemiga stabilize in Abuja.”

She hissed, “Don’t mind them. They have been claiming that they were better than everyone in the area. Now, look at them.”

“What about their properties?”

She laughed out loud, “They sold it all to the highest bidder.”

Her friend shook her head, “Total waste of money. I doubt if they will recover the exact amount spent in buying those things.”

“Of course that will be difficult.”

“I wonder what happened in Abuja?”

“Who cares? The Phillips have been brought to their knees. Their arrogance and air of superiority has played out its course. Now everyone will take their pound of flesh.”

Her friend shook her head, “I feel so sorry for them.”

Bukky picked up her empty bucket and walked back into the building. She overheard some of the things the ladies said. Were they just gossiping or was her ex-boyfriend truly back in Lagos? What was going on?

She went back into her apartment, dropped the bucket in the bathroom, retrieved her phone from the charging point and sat on the bed. She searched for his phone number. It was no longer on her phonebook. She lay back on the bed and typed his full name on facebook.com search box. She found him and clicked the friend request button. She dropped the phone and sighed heavily.

Her neighbor said he had been sacked and he and his family had moved out of their flat. Was it all true or was it truth mixed with lies? The area was known for the way news about people spread like wild fire. Her heart missed a beat. What if it was true? She picked up her phone to check if her request had gone through.

She smiled when she discovered that he had accepted her request. She sighed with relief and sent him a message. ‘Call me Asap’. Almost immediately, her phone began to ring. She sat up and picked the call.

“Hello…”

“Bukky…”

She recognized his voice, “Gbemiga.”

“Hi.”

“Hi. Em… I heard you were back in Lagos.”

“Oh… yes.”

“I heard somethings too.”

She heard him clear his throat.

“Are you home?”

“Yes.”

“Let me come over.”

“Okay.”

The line went dead. She dropped her phone on the bed and got up. She went to her wardrobe, pulled off her sleeveless top and shorts, and changed into a jeans and a red long sleeve blouse. She went to the window and pulled apart the curtain. What was going on? She scratched her scalp. It was about time she loosened the weave-on and wash her hair. The style was so good that she left the weave-on, on for longer than usual. Now, her scalp itched like hell.

She heard knocks on the door. She hurried to it and opened it quickly. Her ex-boyfriend stood at the doorway, in a jeans and a white short-sleeve tee-shirt. He looked thinner than she remembered.

“Hi…”

“Hi, please come in,” she stepped back in.

He walked in and went to sit on the chair. Bukky shut the door and approached him. She sat at the edge of the chair. Her questioning eyes observed his sad looking ones.

“Rumours have been flying about since I got back. Most of it is true,” he met her worried gaze.

She swallowed hard, “What’s going on?”

He turned away, “I lost my job and returned home. I have been job hunting since I got back. I didn’t know that the labour market was a nightmare. There are hundreds of thousands of us out there,” he lamented.

She folded her arms and watched him. He looked depressed and frustrated. She felt so sorry for him.

“My parents and siblings quit their jobs when I relocated to Abuja. Can you blame them?” he laughed sadly, “Now we are all looking for jobs.”

She closed her eyes and opened it. She could imagine what they were going through. The year she moved in with her aunt, her father had also lost his job and her mother’s sales at the market could hardly feed them all or pay the bills. There were days they went without food. It had been pure torture and she won’t wish that experience on her worst enemy. She and her siblings had been shared among relatives in order for them to survive.

“I am so sorry.”

He glanced at her, “I need a job fast. I can’t watch my family suffer this way.”

“Em… what about your fiancée? How is she taking this?”

He blinked and turned away, “Abisoye is the root of my problems.”

“What happened?”

He gave a shake of head, “It is a long story. Right now, she is nowhere to be found and I am here suffering for her actions.”

She stared at him with concern. She wondered what his fiancée did. She wanted to ask, but, sensed that he didn’t want to go into details.

“It is well. I am alive and kicking. Everything will definitely work out for my good,” he tried to smile and turned to look at her.

“Amen.”

“How are you doing?”

She blinked and got up, “I am good,” she walked to her wardrobe and brought out her bag. She counted a few naira notes and returned to the edge of the chair.

When he saw the money in her hand, several thoughts ran through his mind. There were a million things he could use the money for.

“Please take. This is em… I just em… I pray that God will sort you and your family out.”

“Thank you,” he collected the money and counted it. It was eight thousand naira. He raised his head and stared at her in surprise.

“Please manage it, I know it is not much.”

“Th-thank you.”

She smiled, “You are welcome,” she got up again.

Gbemiga got to his feet, “I am grateful.”

“Don’t give up, okay. I believe that God will turn things around sooner than you think.”

He nodded and headed for the door.

Bukky followed him out of the room and watched him walk towards the entrance of the building. She sighed heavily and went back in.
