The Nigerian capped a beautiful display to score his first Uefa Champions League goal in his side’s win against Sporting Lisbon on Wednseday Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mike l scored his first Uefa Champions League goal in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat of Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday at the Stamford Bridge. Fabregas swung in a free kick from the left hand side that was flicked towards goal by Cahill. Mikel and Matic were fighting for the ball at the back post but it was the Nigerian who got the final touch to increase the lead for the Blues. Cesc Fabregas had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes. Andre Schurrle added a second shortly after, with a fierce shot from the edge of the box following good work by Nemanja Matic. Sporting clawed a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points, while Schalke's victory over Maribor meant the Lisbon side did not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4110/nigerians-abroad/2014/12/10/6959522/mikel-obi-nets-first-champions-league-goal?ICID=HP_BN_1 |

Damilare Babajide, a 4th year law student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), yesterday took home a brand new car and other unnamed perks after emerging winner of the 2014 Miss UNILAG pageant. Damilare Babajide, a 4th year law student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), yesterday took home a brand new car and other unnamed perks after emerging winner of the 2014 Miss UNILAG pageant. Ms. Babajide’s windfall immediately ignited a debate among students and lecturers, with some criticizing the material rewards bestowed on a so-called beauty queen when the same university hands a mere computer and some cash to winners of its demanding debate contest. One lecturer, who asked for anonymity, said he was troubled that the car and other gifts to the university’s beauty queen far outstripped the prizes given on September 10 to the winner of the university debate competition. Zainab Olaitan, a 2nd year political science major at UNILAG who won the university’s rigorous academic debate competition, was awarded N100,000 and a laptop computer. UNILAG vice chancellor, Rahman Bello, handed the cash and laptop to the indomitable 18-year-old debater. The lecturer also noted that last year’s winner of the debate competition, Ms. Mary Adegunloye, received a laptop and N50,000. “I understand that the university management was planning to give the same paltry sum of N50,000 cash prize this year to the winner of the debate, but decided to double the cash prize because of criticisms from some lecturers and student leaders,” said the source. In addition, he said that pressure was put on the university’s management to give N50,000 each to runners-up in this year’s debate. Ms. Damilare received her car gift today after emerging Miss UNILAG in a beauty contest organized by the Directorate of Student Affairs (DSA). SaharaReporters could not immediately ascertain the amount of cash and other perks awarded to the beauty queen, but Ms. Damilare told our correspondent in a TV interview that the sum was “encouraging.” Reacting to the disparity in gifts for the beauty contest and the debate competition, a few students told our correspondent that the relatively small reward for intellectual achievement was likely to affect the academic morale of students on campus. A freelance cameraman from Rhode Island (USA) is now the second person from New England to test positive for the Ebola virus. He had been working for NBC and covering the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, but will receive treatment in the United States. The cameraman, identified by NECN as 33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo, joined an NBC News crew on Tuesday to work with the network’s medical correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman. Two days later, he was at a treatment center showing some symptoms of the disease and ultimately tested positive, according to the Associated Press . The rest of the crew and Dr. Snyderman are being flown back to the United States as well. While they have no symptoms of Ebola, the AP reports they will be quarantined for 21 days as a precaution. Initial reports, apparently based on a Facebook profile for Mukpo, indicated that the cameraman’s hometown was Providence, R.I. This was later confirmed by NBC. The cameraman is the fifth American to test positive for the virus and the second person from New England. The other local resident to receive treatment for Ebola was 51-year-old Dr. Rick Sacra of Holden, Mass. Sacra said he may have contracted the disease while helping women deliver their babies in Liberia. He received treatment in Nebraska and has since recovered and been released. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health emphasized in a press conference Friday afternoon that although several suspicious cases have been investigated, none has been so serious as to have tests sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There are no Ebola cases in Massachusetts, and the possibility of an Ebola case in the Commonwealth remains very low,” said an advisory from Mass. DPH on Friday. “Massachusetts is well prepared to handle an incidence of Ebola, in the unlikely event that a case should occur in the Commonwealth.” Despite the fact that suspected cases have yielded negative test results for Ebola so far, the state’s public health officials are continuing to urge hospitals to be especially vigilent and err on the side of caution. www.boston.com/health/2014/10/03/nbc-cameraman-from-tests-positive-for-ebola/5EUDjhtou21kFNJh807TwJ/story.html |
labodinho: It's not possible and I don't know if you even have f/maths which will be needed for engineering.yes, the person has f/maths, but don't know if he can change to engineering |
This happened on the day of the salt and water wahala. I had just come back from class in the d evening and got information that our roommate was rushed to the hospital. They said he had a very high temperature and had vomited like 3 times. What more, he lives in Obalende and had just come back from home I think like 2 days before. We were all hoping it wasn't ebola cos we knew the implications of that on us considering our room conditions. They immediately quarantined him at the medical centre. But after like a week, he got better and was released. I really pitied him sha. Even when he came back, guys were reluctant to touch him too much. |
Pls guys, I want to know if one can do a change of course from medicine to engineering. Thanks in advance guys. |
Jarus: Don't be surprised if there are as many as 100 between 20 and 23years.100 ke. probably 1000 self. But i think that unilag doctor was lucky he didn't do his bsc in Nigeria sha. If not... |
hungryboy: Before u criticise 'em, Answer this questionNawa o, we wey come dey stay directly in front infectious decease hospital here for Yaba wey dem dey keep ebola victims nko. Wetin you wan make we do o. |
Whatever damage this ebola virus does Nigeria, it will be on record that an American citizen brought it to Nigeria. |
AmericanQueen: Tori Bowie has ran the fastest 100 and 200 meter times this year and has beaten every major sprinter this year. Unlike Blessing , Torie has proved on more than one occasion she can win a big meet with a world class field. Blessing despite winning the CWG has NOT won a "Major A-list" meet!!!!What do mean by blessing has not won a major meet. Guy, she has won 9 diamond league meeting in case u don't know beating the likes of SAFP and Alyson Felix in the process. Please don't spread wrong info here. Btw, Bowie jus started athletics last year and u already think she has proven herself more than blessing, without even attending a major championship yet. Haba |
PetroDolla3: you sent me a link to a bogus newspaper story as your evidence? didn't realse you shitnigerians were that stvpidGosh, i hope not all ghanians r dis dull. Ok, so u also know, nigeria produces 3 times d electricity u produce in that tiny country of yours. is it the same ghana that their citizens had to protest the poor supply of electricity b4 world cup. U guys need total rehabilitation. www.en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_electricity_production |
jnrbayano: Nothing prevents you from being patrotic but don't allow it becloud your analytic mind.I totally understand you bro but to me these are the best players we have at least until others come up. Lets just hope we produce better players in future who can compete the the best in the world. With time, we will get better. Am also sorry if that name offended you. As for that bosnia game, as i said, thats football and we can't change it. But that doesn't mean we wouldn't have qualified. |
delikay4luv: We need to step up our gameYeah true talk. this is what we need. Encouragement. Not bad mouthing. totally agree bro |
collynzo2: What about when we were 9th in 2009, what happened then? jnrbayano: He still maintained I am a plastic fan and that confirmed to me that his age is not far away from zero.I only questioned your love for your national team and you are calling me age zero. Spain had a bad world cup yet did you see the reception they got? Guess that can never happen in nigeria. In 2009 we were 9th and couldn't get beyond the quarter finals of the nations cup, struggled to qualify for the would cup and had a shambolish display in it. So u think that period of our football was better than now. African champions, second round of world cup. We may have even gotten to the quarter finals if the ref gave that red card but at least, that is part of football. Am not going to insult anyone here but since you've decided give insults, instead of defending yourself. I won't reply you again. |
jnrbayano: I'm a guy of very few words, I don't know why you are vexed this morning.yeah, plastic fan because u refuse to acknowledge the efforts of the players and coach in brazil. In case you do not know, this ranking is as a result of their performance in the world cup. btw, that 5th position you are talking about was only possible because the rankings were introduced just as nigeria became african champions in 1994. so u see, everybody started at 0 points then and it was easier to move up quickly than now. And lets not deceive ourselves. To get to fifth position cannot be achieved that easily anymore. |
jnrbayano: Appreciation to who?they were ranked 44th, you complained, they moved up ten places, u still complain. want will ever please us nigerians. Plastic fans indeed. Safari girl is right |
busterr: What of spain?? They should drop to 20 places.spain ahould definately be out of top ten |
jnrbayano: Still languishing behind.at least they moved up ten places, show some appreciation. Haba |

I guess anybody who achieves something in like now is lucky abi. |
I guess anybody who achieves something in life now is lucky abi. |
Looking at his achievements. 1. Coached and qualified Togo for the world cup 2. Coached Mali and masterminded a famous comeback of four goals against the host country during the 2010 nations cup. 3. Coached Nigeria and after just one year, his team lifted the nations cup (first time in 19 years) despite going with 19 debutants becoming only the second African to ever win the trophy as a manager and as a coach. 4. Qualified Nigeria for the CHAN tournament (first time in our history), put up a decent performance including another famous comeback (3 or 4 goals, can't remember) against Morocco and 'unlucky' lost to Ghana the semi finals. Finishing third. 5. Qualified Nigeria for the world cup with relative ease (compared to our previous scenarios). 6. Gave us our first world cup match win in 15 years. 7. Became the first ever African coach to get to the knock-out stages of the world cup. 9. Lost to France controversially in a game the french should have had a player sent off (also, the disallowed goal by Emenike) 10. He aso discovered new players for our national team like Oboabona, Omeruo, Mba, Onazi, Uzoenyi etc. Any more? So I wonder if all these achievements were truly achieved by luck. |
rahazaqa: D AFOY award will go to d person that deserve it,YaYa Toure...World 2nd best defensive midfielder behind Sergio Boshokoto(bosquet)....guy, yaya toure no longer plays as a defensive midfielder 4 man city |
wat Mikel needs now is 2 be giving more freedom by his managers (keshi and mourinho) 2 move forward and he will get lot more goals. WOW, front page? 'I never knew' I could make front page on nairaland. Amazing. |

Like at Southampton on Wednesday, the first half was entertaining and end to end, if shorn of goals, and like at Southampton it needed a second-half header to open the scoring. After Michael Essien was replaced John Mikel Obi took the captain's armband, and, on his 300th appearance in a Chelsea shirt, capped his day with a goal, thumping home Willian's free-kick with a bullet header. Oscar added a second soon after, swerving the ball past Derby's keeper Lee Grant with a fine strike, and the remaining minutes were played out in relative comfort as we eventually eased into the fourth round, where a home tie with Stoke City awaits. Jose Mourinho said he was delighted with his side's attitude against a side going well in the Championship… 'The game was difficult,' said Mourinho. 'In the first half we played quite well, we were not far from scoring but it was still 0-0 at half-time and that is a big risk, because after that if the opponent scores you are in trouble. 'They got the message that in the second half we needed an extra intensity. I decided to change Essien for Eden Hazard to bring an extra attacking player on to make it more difficult for them. 'The team played seriously, we won, job done.' It was a landmark day for John Mikel Obi, in many respects… 'I never recognise his ability to score goals!' the Portuguese laughed. 'I recognise his ability to play as an anchorman, to play that position in a very comfortable way, with no mistakes. He reads the game well, plays in an intelligent and safe way, but I never recognise his goalscoring appetite. 'There was a smile on my face [when he scored]. For some reason Essien gave him the armband, normally it should go to Ashley Cole, so maybe it made him believe he was a goalscorer! 'It was important for us, we were dominating and dominating, creating and creating but the goal was not arriving. It was like the winning goal.' http://www.chelseafc.com/news-article/article/3605362/title/final-whistle-verdict-mission-accomplished |
