Education / Landmark Varsity Seizes NYSC Call-up Letters Of 200 Students For Missing Prayers by Siggynigeria: 8:20pm On Mar 14, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

Parents of some graduates from the Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, where Dr. David Oyedepo is the Chancellor have alleged that the institution’s management is withholding the National Youth Service Corps scheme call-up letters of their children, Siggy reports.

According to them, the management’s action is following their children’s absence in a prayer session held to bid them farewell from the institution.

According to one of the parents, the students were absent when Dr. David Oyedepo came to pray for them.

"Sir, this issue may not be your business, but, I feel as an affairs analyst, you can add your voice to 200 families who are in pain,” a text message allegedly from one of the parents read.

“Our wards graduated from Landmark University, Omu-Aran, owned by Bishop Oyedepo. About 200 graduands were absent when Bishop David Oyedepo came to pray over them and he then instructed that their NYSC call-up letters be withheld.

“Delegates and letters of appeal have been sent with no response until yesterday, when I heard that call-up letters will be released in August 2022.

“It means our children will stay at home with us after graduation till August. This is rather draconian and height of impunity,” another parent said.

Meanwhile, further reports say when contacted, spokesman for Landmark University, Joseph Olajide said that the affected students are faceless and that the parents ought to bring their grievances to the school not the media.

While registering the pupils in this village (Kpogno), Ihenyen observed that several people, particularly the children and the elderly, were not looking healthy enough.

After some inquiries, she realized that the rural dwellers had to travel 14 kilometers away to access the nearest clinic in another village called Borong.

Ibrahim said, “She became disturbed and took it upon herself to change the ugly situation.

“Using her orientation on NYSC’s Community Development Service Programme, she strategized, secured the necessary support and approval of the NYSC scheme, mobilised the relevant stakeholders, particularly the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and most importantly collaborated with the people of the community.”

“Seeing and trusted her as a messiah, the community happily and willingly donated a four-bedroom dilapidated building for the project in addition to other contributions towards its success.”

“And finally it is mission accomplished for Copa Joy!!! As the people of Kpogno Community no longer have to travel 14 kilometers to access simple medical care. Copa Joy, an indigene from far away Edo State, Ekpoma LGA, has come to their rescue through the human scheme, NYSC.”

“To ensure continued sustenance, management and viability of the health care centre, corps member Joy partnered with the State Primary Healthcare through the Girei LGA PHC which is to continue providing drugs, services as well as other medical consumables and non-consumables.”

Update from SIGGY .ng

Students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have staged a protest over the death of their fellow student who allegedly died because of medical negligence, Siggy reports.

According to reports, the student went to study at UNIBEN’s basement close to the hospital on Wednesday around 5 a.m. and got a cold.

In a post by Instablog9ja, “His friends rushed him to UBTH’s Acc!dent and Emergency ward after he had a seizure, but the nurses on duty refused to admit him, asking for an NHIS card. They assumed he was exaggerating and left him on the ground floor in front of the building for more than an hour.

"Even the doctor on duty refused to attend to him saying he was tired and plugged his ears listening to music. Williams bare on the floor, struggled for oxygen and died. The nurses were confronted and they lied that he was brought-in-de#d (BID).

Even when we took him to the morgue, the attendants refused to embalm him and were asking for N5K until we protested. It is pathetic that Williams—the only child of his mother—who had plans of traveling to Canada was c#t short due to medical negligence. We staged a protest in the school on the matter because this is a recurrent issue on campus.

Education / Ogun Govt Vows To Sanction Private Schools Who Accept Expelled Students by Siggynigeria: 7:06pm On Jan 05, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

The Ogun State Government has threatened to sanction schools that re-admit students expelled from other schools, Siggy reports.

The government also threatened to name and shame any culpable pupils at the school, zonal and state levels where any pupils are found wanting.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbagbu, stated this on Tuesday at a press briefing held in Abeokuta, the state capital, to unveil the strategies mapped out to tackle juvenile delinquency in schools.

Arigbabu said the government would not only announce erring students publicly as a deterrent to others, but will also reward well behaved pupils who have distinguished themselves in academics and character.

In his words, “We are taking very serious steps against crimes and criminality in both public and private schools and private school owners should cooperate with us in this fight. We are the one that give licences to the private schools and if any of them flout our directives, we can easily have their licences withdrawn.

“There will be naming and shaming of pupils that engage in crimes and juvenile delinquencies in our schools across the state. That will be done at school, zonal and state levels. We are also going to involve our pupils and engage in all sorts of extra-curricular activities to discourage the pupils from juvenile delinquencies.

“Students expelled should not be admitted into any public or private school in Ogun State, that is something that will be very difficult and that is why we put in place what we call the learner identification number.

“The E- platform we are using now will make it difficult for dual registration.

“Once you are in a school and you misbehave and you are sent away, it will be very difficult to get into another school in Ogun but, some of them will want to get into schools, and that is why we are meeting private school owners tomorrow.”
