PoliticsNigerians Suffered Like This When Buhari Was Military Head Of State - Yakassai by SignalNG1(op): 3:18pm On Dec 28, 2015
Buhari stopped the importation of things like Maggi and wives of big men would leave their houses as early as 5 a.m to go to Leventis, Kingsway or other shops to queue up for Maggi, salt or sugar. I didn’t let my wives go so I sent my house boys instead to go queue up on their behalf! The common Maggi in Kano became a real scarcity overnight.

This thing happened to us before and Buhari in spite of the large amount of livestock that we have in this country, we engage in trade batter with Brazil. Brazil was supplying Nigeria with beef and frozen chicken. This common chicken that we grow in our backyard. These are the types of policies they adopted.

In a way I like what is happening because it would teach Nigerians a lesson that when politicians come with their slogan that they are going to turn everything into heaven, they should think twice before they lend them their support.

PoliticsNigeria Will Continue To Import Petrol Beyond 2016 – Kachikwu by SignalNG1(op): 9:05pm On Dec 27, 2015
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, on Sunday, said Nigeria will continue to import fuel beyond 2016.

Speaking at a Press chat with journalists shortly after a tour of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company, the Minister said “the future is that, Nigeria is still going to import fuel in 2016 and beyond.

“Until we begin to get individuals who can co-relocate, we are going to be doing a mixture of local and importation of fuel to meet up demands.

“Best case situation is 25% local and 75% importation. Worse case is what we are experiencing now.

“In the next few weeks, however, queues will disappear in fuel stations,” he stated.

The Minister said Kaduna Refinery will soon attain 2 million litres per day capacity as soon as an FCC unit is fully on stream.

“We need to get it back to re-kit it to work well. We will do that with some level of production going on,” said Mr. Kachikwu.

“Our concern is to have a consistent production and provision of products at all times.”

On subsidy and pricing, Mr. Kachikwu said “we will not be fluctuating prices, we will take an average. Today no subsidy, in January we will look at the situation and announce it.”

On privatization, he said “President Muhammadu Buhari has not approved any policy about selling the refineries.”

PoliticsAtiku Denies Allegations He Is Working Against Buhari by SignalNG1(op): 1:54pm On Dec 27, 2015
Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) Atiku Abubakar advises political mischief makers to allow him enjoy his peace and desist from sinister propaganda designed to draw a wedge between him and President Muhammadu Buhari, in order to cause needless distrust and distractions in the President’s government.

Reacting to insinuations by what he called “political mischief makers and enemies of unity”, who alleges that he has been hosting political meetings at Burj Al-Arab, Dubai, the former Vice President says contrary to the rumours being bandied around by political opponents, he is currently in Dubai with his family for physiotherapy on his injured knee.

A press statement released by his media office in Abuja on Sunday, 27 December 2015 and signed by his Media Adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe says the former Vice President is embarrassed by the deliberate falsehoods being spread against him by political opponents who are bent on causing distraction for President Buhari at a time all energies should be channelled into helping the President actualise his change agenda.

Describing rumour mongers as “ill-motivated busybodies that don’t wish the country well”, the Turaki Adamawa explains that his medical treatment is his private affairs, which should not be politicised by anybody to achieve sinister objectives.

Atiku Abubakar says he is entitled to enjoy his private life, including the right to attend to his health, without being harassed and lied against by political opponents.

Contrary to the insinuations by political opponents, the former Vice President says the success of the Buhari administration has been his preoccupation, and that any true APC member should have the same zeal.

PoliticsOP-UNEDITED | Why Nobody Will Invest In Nigeria’s Oil Industry by SignalNG1(op): 9:57pm On Dec 26, 2015
By Kalu Ajah

It’s important to clearly separate removal of fuel subsidy and deregulation.

Fuel subsidy is a quick fix, it’s essentially price control, it’s the FGN attempting at playing economics. Deregulation is market forces determining prices based on demand and supply, it’s essentially the market forces working to determine prices based on demand and supply.

Fuel subsidy is when the Federation pays Importers to sell petrol at a set price. So a marketer eg Oando imports petrol at N100, official price is N87, subsidy the Federation will pay is N13 plus a profit margin.

However, deregulation is when the market forces determine what price petrol will sell at the pumps, e.g. Oando and Okoro & Sons will import petrol, determine their own selling prices in a competitive atmosphere based on demand and supply and sell to consumers.

The problem we have is that the FGN has fixed the selling price of a product it does not manufacture, in this case petrol.

So will anyone invest in an industry where the selling price is not a decision they make? What if a company invests $2b in a new refinery to sell petrol at N80, and FGN the next day says petrol will sell at N79? They lose. That is why no large private petrol refinery has been built in Nigeria.

Today, petrol price today is not uniform across Nigeria and also not available because the importation and distribution of petrol is done and paid by the government. The government does not understand business.

Look at your mobile phone how much did you buy it? The price is essentially the same across Nigeria? You can’t buy an iPhone for N80,000 in Abuja and then buy it for N150,000 in Jigawa, not possible. One trader would have seen the opportunity and “imported” iPhone from Abuja to Jigawa, that’s how the free deregulated markets work.

If the FGN had a Ministry of Mobile Phones, then the prices of phones would not be uniform or efficient. First off all, you will need an “import license” to import an iPhone, then you go to Dubai, buy the phone, fly back to Lagos and the Federation pays you back cost of the iPhone but also pays your air ticket to take your phone to sell in Abuja, at a government price. The Government will also pay your cost of storing your phones at home, sweet deal. Best part of the deal is you can still sell your phone openly above the government price during “scarcity”. The FGN will call the scheme, the iPhone subsidy.

In effect, your taxes are being paid to private individuals to import and sell their own products across Nigeria. I have just described fuel subsidy to you.

So I read fuel subsidy has been removed, and fuel price will come down, really? Fuel subsidy removed? As we speak, fuel subsidy has not been removed, the price of crude has dropped, so subsidy cost has fallen. If subsidy was removed, we won’t have a pricing template from PPPRA, (there is no pricing template on mobile phones from Ministry of Communication).

Once crude oil prices rise again, subsidy will rise again. So the question to ask is why not scrap it 100% as was done in 2012? Deregulate the sector formally, pass a bill to take the government out of the business of petrol importation and distribution, that a job for the private sector, not the Federation.

The solution is not adjusting pricing templates, or piecemeal removal of subsidy, that’s not enough, the final solution remains the full deregulation of the sector, that what the PIB sets out to achieve, full deregulation.

Deregulation will pull in new investors, new investors will compete, prices will fall, just as the prices of imported phones fall and we now we see phones being assembled in Nigeria.

Price fixing is not deregulation; fuel subsidy removal is not deregulation. Deregulate the sector by passing the PIB. The government has no business in business.

It’s our problem, we can fix it…

Politics‘relocate To Borno If You Have Defeated Boko Haram’, Fayose Tells Lai Mohammed by SignalNG1(op): 6:14pm On Dec 26, 2015
Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has called on Nigerians to pray specially for President Muhammadu Buhari; saying; “The President needs God to give him the necessary wisdom to be able to find solution to the country’s economic and security problems.”

The governor also challenged the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed to relocate to Sambisa in Borno State or at best Yobe State and move around there without heavy military security if indeed he was sure that Boko Haram had been defeated.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “only God’s intervention can save Nigeria from the present economic and security problems as it is glaring that the man running the affairs of the country at the federal level does not have any answer to the problems.”

He said; “Even the Holy Bible said in James 1:5 that if anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God and as it is, Nigerians must assist the President in asking for wisdom and understanding to tackle the country’s economic and security problems before Nigeria is further plunged into more woes with the federal government’s decision to borrow N2.2 Trillion, which translates to N6.066 billion per day to finance the 2016 Budget.”

He described the Federal Government’s announced reduction of petrol pump price from N87 to N85 per litre as a continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s governance by deceit, saying; “Even secondary school students of economics know that you cannot deregulate and regulate at the same time.”

The governor said; “it is only in a confused and clueless economy that government will plan to spend more when revenue has reduced by more than 50 percent.”

Governor Fayose, who maintained that petrol will not sell below N100 per litre in 2016, added that; “Even now that the price is N87 and subsidy is yet to be removed, Nigerians are buying at between N130 and N300 per litre. What will now happen when they remove subsidy and allow market forces to determine the price?”

The governor described claimed by the Information Minister that Boko Haram insurgents had been defeated as strange, saying; “Nigerians will only take the minister serious if he relocates to either Sambisa in Borno State or Yobe State and stay there till the end of March, next year without heavy military security.”

He said; “To show their level of confusion, two days after the Minister of Information declared that Boko Haram had been defeated, President Buhari said the government would persuade Boko Haram to abandon their fight. One then wonders how the same Boko Haram insurgents Lai Mohammed said were already defeated will have to be persuaded to abandon their fight.

“Interestingly, the same Boko Haram that Lai Mohammed said had been defeated reportedly attacked Kimba village in Gur ward of Biu Local Government Area of Borno State yesterday night.

“Therefore, the Information Minister must show Nigerians how peaceful Borno and Yobe States have become after the defeat of Boko Haram by relocating to either Sambisa, Maiduguri or Yobe.”

PoliticsTHROWBACK: Femi Falana Speaking Against Subsidy Removal In 2012 [VIDEO] by SignalNG1(op): 1:24pm On Dec 26, 2015
Seen here is a video of Day 2 of the #OccupyNigeria protests against fuel subsidy removal in 2012 at the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Lagos.

PoliticsHold Lai Mohammed Responsible For Future Boko Haram Attacks – The THIRD Force by SignalNG1(op): 1:38pm On Dec 24, 2015
Press Statement

The THIRD Force, a coalition of young Nigerian politicians and professionals committed to the birth of a new Nigeria, has called on Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious divides to hold Lai Mohammed responsible for any further attacks carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist group on the citizens of Nigeria.

The group was reacting to a statement by Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information on Wednesday declaring that the war against Boko Haram has been won and the Nigerian Army has met the December 2015 deadline given to them by President Buhari to defeat Boko Haram.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Zaria by Ishaq Abubakar, the spokesperson of The THIRD Force, the group described Lai Mohammed’s comments as reckless and irresponsible.

“While the defeat and end of Boko Haram in Nigeria is a dream all well-meaning citizens of Nigeria desire and have supported the government and the Nigerian Army to accomplish, The THIRD Force however believes that there should be limits to reckless and irresponsible propaganda especially when it is coming from the office of a public officer paid with taxpayers’ money.

“Lai Mohammed’s hasty declaration on Wednesday that Boko Haram has been defeated was not only misguided but an idiotic attempt to end the war against Boko Haram on the pages of newspapers.

“We understand that the Nigerian government has been under pressure to show the world that the December deadline to end Boko Haram given by President Buhari to the Nigerian Army is feasible. But the reality on ground suggests otherwise. No fewer than 1,500 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram in the past six months according to Associated Press reports. Only last week, Boko Haram attacks in the northeast of Nigeria left over 30 dead and 20 others wounded. News of the attacks was slow to emerge because telecom masts in the area have been destroyed in previous Boko Haram raids, hindering communication. Many more attacks are happening on a daily basis that do not make the news headlines. Is this normal? Are these not Nigerian citizens or are they mere statistics in Lai Mohammed’s school of governance by propaganda?

“Just last Thursday, Boko Haram insurgents killed 14 people, decapitating some of them, when they raided Kamuya village, the hometown of Lt. General Tukur Buratai, the Nigerian Army Chief’s mother, and burnt it down. Are these mere statistics or is Lai Mohammed telling the world that this is normal in a country where terrorism has been defeated?

“Even if the war against Boko Haram has been won and Lai Mohammed can now relocate from the comfort of Abuja to Maiduguri, what is the strategic sense in this needless public bravado? Would it not have been wiser to wait a few weeks to assess the extent of this “victory” before rushing to town to celebrate?

“Lai Mohammed will soon realize the hard way that there is a wide gulf between being the spokesperson of the government of a country of over 170 million citizens and being the spokesperson of an opposition party.

“Let it be on record that by declaring this phantom victory against Boko Haram, Lai Mohammed is helping the government of Nigeria endanger more Nigerian lives. Such a thoughtlessly provocative statement from a senior Nigerian government official is capable of eliciting a response from Boko Haram and their allies through bomb blasts and brutal attacks against defenseless Nigerian citizens.

“Lai Mohammed must now begin to pray. He must pray hard that the Boko Haram he defeated on the pages of newspapers are actually defeated and remain defeated. The blood of any Nigerian citizens lost to fresh Boko Haram attacks after this careless statement will be upon his head.”

PoliticsEx-president Goodluck Jonathan Visits The US Presidential Precinct [PHOTOS] by SignalNG1(op): 8:04pm On Dec 23, 2015
As part of its mission to promote democracy globally, the Precinct convenes leaders from many different backgrounds, religions, and political systems. Following the examples of Presidents Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, we at the Precinct are interested in exploring knowledge and ideas no matter where they may be found or who may promote them. In the words of Thomas Jefferson “For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it”.

The Precinct’s most recent visitor was Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. President Jonathan hopes to continue serving Nigeria and Africa by establishing institutions that can effect meaningful change. Jonathan was the first President in Nigeria’s history to peacefully concede the results of a democratic election and to relinquish his position in office to the opposition. The peaceful transfer of power was an original goal of the American founding fathers. It was fitting that President Jonathan chose to begin planning a private Foundation and his post presidential role by coming to the Presidential Precinct in Virginia for advice.

President Jonathan spent nearly a week, November 8-13, 2015, at the Presidential Precinct, meeting with academic, government and business leaders and sharing his experiences with local experts. Here he discussed with them ideas for bringing peace and economic development to Africa. He also used the opportunity to work with specialists to hone his Foundation’s message.

PoliticsArmy Has Met December Deadline Of Defeating Boko Haram – Lai Mohammed by SignalNG1(op): 7:13pm On Dec 23, 2015
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Wednesday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Mohammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.

“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hot bed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ”every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.

“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mohammed, however, said that though there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature if insurgency globally.

“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory

“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.

“It is our turn as civilians to give them our support; to realise that the war they are fighting is not their war alone, but our war, hence we must own the war.”

The minister disclosed that a national security campaign had commenced to raise awareness among Nigerians about the war, the sacrifices of our troops, and how to stamp out the remnant of the war.

“Jingles are being played on national radio and television as part of the campaign in order to keep the media better informed about the war, so that they can also better inform Nigerians,’’ he said.

Mohammed also said that an ad-hoc committee, comprising media representatives as well as intelligence agencies, would be inaugurated to regularly be updated about the war in order to better inform the public. (NAN)

PoliticsThe THIRD Force Condemns Aisha Buhari’s Banquet With ‘change Agents’ by SignalNG1(op): 5:28pm On Dec 23, 2015
Press Statement

The THIRD Force, a coalition of young Nigerian politicians and professionals committed to the birth of a new Nigeria, has condemned in strong terms a banquet organized on Tuesday by Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari for some “Social Media Change Agents”.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Zaria by the spokesperson of The THIRD Force, Ishaq Abubakar, the group described the banquet as morally repugnant and a slight on the sensibilities of Nigerians in a trying moment of economic depression, insecurity and acute poverty.

According to the statement, “The THIRD Force considers it morally repugnant and a slight on the sensibilities of Nigerians that at a time when over 2,000 Nigerian lives have been reportedly wasted and unaccounted for in the Zaria Shia massacre; at a time when Nigerians are confronted with severe economic hardship, fuel scarcity and Nigeria’s worst ever crash of the Naira against the dollar; at a time when Nigerians are groaning under the yoke of what may be the worst Christmas celebration ever; at a time when the scourge of Boko Haram attacks have overwhelmed the capacity of our military to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria Aisha Buhari, the wife of the Nigerian president is throwing a lavish party that was not only obscene in its opulence, but callous, wicked and insensitive to the plight of millions of deprived Nigerians who are bearing the brunt of this government’s record cluelessness, lack of direction and phantasmagoric policies.

“What exactly are we celebrating? Has President Buhari’s government achieved so much that a party of rice, pounded yam, fruit juices and malt drinks organized for starving youths of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party is the priority of the moment? What happened to the IDP camps with millions of displaced Nigerian citizens who have been reduced to beggars by a government that failed them?

“Under Buhari, Nigeria’s economy has suffered terrible blows. Nigeria appears directionless; the right of citizens to free speech is being threatened; our stock market is crashing; citizens are being killed and their rights violated by the same authorities that swore to protect them; our president is globetrotting like foreign trips are running out of fashion; we wake up every day in a Nigeria where election promises are being denied by the ruling party and return home to food left over by the movers and shakers of the country. Yet here we are, organizing a party to immortalize the folly. What disdain!

“If the organizers of Aisha Buhari’s Aso Rock banquet were too impervious to the mood of the nation, one would have expected the invited youths to be more self-respecting. If after campaigning and being used for President Buhari’s presidential campaign, the value of their contributions is being reduced to plates of rice and bottles of malt drinks, it simply means that Nigerian youths have a seat only at Aisha Buhari’s dinner table. Shame.

“In Sweden, Johan Gabriel Wikström was appointed Minister of Health in 2014 at the age of 29. Moussa Mara became the Prime Minister of Mali in 2014 at the age of 29. Charles Michel is the Prime Minister of Belgium. He assumed office on October 11, 2014 at the age of 39. Irakli Garibashvili was appointed Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs in 2012 at the age of 30. In Nigeria, youths are used, dumped after elections and later invited for banquets where they are encouraged to eat and forget their sorrows. Nigerian youths arise! You cannot continue like this.

“In the history of Nigeria, it is on record that no government has insulted and treated Nigerian youths with such disdain like Buhari’s government within the last nine months of assumption of office as a civilian president. As if that is not bad enough, his government and their cheerleaders, continue to mock the sensibilities of Nigerians youths by running frivolous tweets and social media commentary in defense of Buhari’s government. Wake up. You are being used, and for what? Plates of rice and a bottle of Maltina!

“Clearly, Aisha Buhari’s charade with ‘change youths’ on Tuesday in Aso Rock is nothing but a fanciful parade of dull vanities. At its best, it was simply another platform for the flagrant wastage of Nigeria’s meager resources and an opportunity to tell Nigerian youths how cheap, irresponsible, and unprepared for leadership they are.”

PoliticsAmid Fuel Scarcity And Hardship, Aisha Buhari Hosts ‘youths’ To A Lavish Banquet by SignalNG1(op): 1:40pm On Dec 23, 2015
Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday hosted a lavish banquet to mark the end of the year for a group of Nigerian youths tagged: ‘Social Media Change Agents’.

Top social media personalities graced the lavish event that was held at the Banquet hall of the presidential villa.

The event is coming at a time of biting economic hardship and a protracted nationwide fuel scarcity that has seen Nigerians spending minimum of nine hours daily in fuel queues.

Curiously, as the banquet was holding at the Aso Rock presidential seat of power, Nigeria was crashing down from its number three position in a CNN projection of the world’s fastest growing economies. In January 2015, CNN had stated that Nigeria will be among the top three fastest growing economies in 2015 after China and Qatar. By December 2015, Nigeria had crashed out of the list of the world’s top 5 fastest growing economies.

Reacting to the severe economic hardship that was hitting Nigeria hard, President Buhari on Tuesday in his 2016 budget presentation said he could feel the pains of Nigerians. “I know the state of our economy is a source of concern for many. This has been further worsened by the unbridled corruption and security challenges we have faced in the last few years”, he said.

The Aisha Buhari banquet has provoked mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some say it was a waste of Nigeria’s resources on youths who were used and dumped after elections by Buhari’s government.

He expressed the outright support of Saudi Arabia for Nigeria in its ongoing fight against terrorism and emphasized that Saudi Arabia stands in solidarity with the African country following a series of recent terrorist attacks.

King Salman also emphasized that criminal acts such as terrorism are denounced by Islam and asserted his kingdom will refuse to become involved in any kind of foreign intervention aimed at destabilizing the security and stability of Nigeria.

According to Mrs Adeosun, “the deficits in the 2016 budget – which I based on an oil price of $38 per barrel – will more than double to N2.2 trillion.

Nigeria has a debt-to-GDP ratio of 12 per cent, compared with 57 per cent for Angola and 48 per cent for South Africa, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This feat is expected to assist the country in borrowing internationally.

On what role the MTN fine would play in budget financing, she said the fine, which has been reduced to N780 billion which is over 10 per cent of the budget, has nothing to do with its funding.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) late this year fined the telecoms giant N1.04 trillion – more than 12 per cent of the 2016 budget – for its failure to disconnect over five million unregistered lines.

“We need to stimulate the economy because we cannot afford this downturn to be excessively prolonged.

“We think we have the headroom to borrow. We’re going to mix it between local and foreign debts. We’re talking to multilateral agencies already and we’re at an advanced stage. Then, we’ll look at the foreign capital markets. The budget will not include income from regulatory fines, such as the $3.9 billion levied on MTN Group,” the minister noted.

Politics'we Respect Our Elders’, Idoma Youths Caution Onjeh Over Provocative Statements by SignalNG1(op): 4:09pm On Dec 16, 2015
The Idoma Youth Vanguard has again taken stock of the unfolding event surrounding the annulment of Senator David Mark's election by the court of appeal and told the All Progressive Party (APC) Benue south candidate, Daniel Onjeh pointedly to desist from making unguarded statements disparaging the Idoma nation.

The group in a press statement signed by its president Mike Ocheibi cautioned Onjeh against the use of foul language against the Idoma people.

The group pointed out that Onjeh in one of his press statements described the Idoma people as most gullible people in the world for believing and supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Senator David Mark, GCON.

They therefore demanded unreserved apology from Onjeh saying "you have a right to contest election but we also have a right to choose who to vote for.

"We did not make mistake in voting for Mark before and we are ready to vote for him again. We have had enough of these unwarranted provocative attacks on our illustrious son David Mark and the collective interest of Idoma nation.

"Let it be noted that we shall no longer tolerate this untoward behavior. As Africans and an Idoma in particular, we have a good culture and tradition. we have respect for our elders. Besides, a true Idoma man will not be a ready and willing tool to be used against the interest of his people.

"On this cause, we are united in no unmistakable terms to defend the interest of Idoma. We have chosen David Mark and there is no going back , no matter the amount of blackmail and mischief.

"If people like Onjeh loaf around with mischief that David Mark has not done anything for the Idoma nation, we dare ask, who made professor Jerry Agada, Abba Moro, Grace Ogwuche among others Ministers? Who brought the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Otukpo study center? Who brought the multi-billion Otobi water dam? Who facilitated the construction of multi-million naira Oweto bridge now nearing completion?

"Can Onjeh in all honesty deny profiting from Mark’s education programmes?

"Every year, since 2005, over 1,000 students benefit from David Mark Scholarship Foundation (DMSF). At least 20,000 Benue sons and daughters who ordinarily would not have had access to school are today graduates on account of Mark’s benevolence.

"Yet, the likes of Onjeh will be shameless to say Mark has not done anything for his people.

PoliticsNigeria Joins 34-member ‘islamic Military Alliance’ Led By Saudi Arabia by SignalNG1(op): 6:17pm On Dec 15, 2015
Yemi Adebowale

Saudi Arabia has formed a coalition of 34 mainly Muslim countries – including countries such as Nigeria, Egypt and Turkey – to coordinate a fight against “terrorist organisations”, Al Jazeera is reporting.

The alliance was announced by Mohammed bin Salman, the country’s defence minister and deputy crown prince, on Tuesday.

Arab countries such as Qatar and the UAE will join the coalition, as well as Middle Eastern, Asian and African states including Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia and Nigeria.

Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran and its allies Syria and Iraq were excluded from the alliance, despite the states sharing a common enemy in the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

Bin Salman said the states would work together to target “any terrorist organisation, not just ISIL” in countries including Iraq, Syria. Libya, Egypt, and Afghanistan.

Military operations would work in accordance with local laws and in cooperation with the international community, he added.

In an earlier press statement issued by the Saudi Press Agency, officials said the group would be led by Saudi Arabia, which would host a “joint operations centre to coordinate” efforts.

The United States welcomed the announcement of the anti-terrorism alliance. “We look forward to learning more about what Saudi Arabia has in mind in terms of this coalition,” Defence Secretary Ashton Carter told journalists in Turkey.

The Nigerian government has made no official statement regarding the involvement of a secular state like Nigeria in a military alliance whose membership comprises 34 mainly Muslim states.

SIGNAL exclusively reported on November 9, 2015 news about a 10-member ‘secret’ delegation from Nigeria to Pakistan. The purpose of the Nigerian delegation’s visit was shrouded in mystery. The Associated Press of Pakistan confirmed the visit but the Nigerian government refrained from making any statements about the purpose and those involved in the visit on behalf of the Nigerian government.

Politics#dasukigate: “buhari Ate Only Yams He Was Entitled To Eat” – Femi Adesina by SignalNG1(op): 4:11pm On Dec 15, 2015
President Buhari benefitted from the atrocious amounts allegedly embezzled by former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), emerging reports are indicating.

According to a message that went viral across Nigerian social media platforms on Monday, Buhari benefitted from the brazen and unaccounted looting of Nigeria’s treasury.

The statement reads: “Buhari Collected $300,000 compensation from Dasuki. The investigation on the $2.1 billion arms purchase funds given to the former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) have revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari was among those that benefited from the security spending. According to Dasuki’s office, General Muhammadu Buhari collected $300,000 initial payment as compensation over Boko Haram’s attack on him. His bullet proof car worth millions was also replaced with new ones by Dasuki. President Buhari benefited from the alleged diversion of arms budget by Dasuki with newspapers owners, whose business was disrupted by both Boko Haram attacks and the military seizing their newspapers or disrupting their distribution channels. President Buhari was also alleged to have received 5 bullet proof jeeps from Sambo Dasuki valued over N500 million without the approval of the Presidency.”

Attempts to confirm the rumor prompted online newspaper, Sahara Reporters to contact Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari. According to Mr. Adesina in a reply to Sahara Reporters via text message, Buhari only took what he was entitled to as a former Head of State. “Nothing beyond what he was statutorily entitled to as a former head of state. Thanks’, Adesina said.

PoliticsPropaganda Will Not Put Food On The Table Of Nigerians, PDP Fires Back At FG by SignalNG1(op): 6:43pm On Dec 14, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes the ridiculous statement on Sunday by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed in which he tried to blame the PDP for the apparent failure of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration.

It is clear from the statement that the on going campaign against the PDP and the media/mob trial of opposition elements in the country is being coordinated from the office of the Minister. We are aware that large sums of money have been made available for this purpose, hence the desire of the Minister to justify his brief.

In carrying out his brief, Lai Mohammed has chosen to ignore the time-honoured admonition that those who go to equity must come with clean hands. Otherwise how would this minister possibly forget that having served as Chief of Staff in one of the most corrupt state governments in the country, he clearly lacks the moral and ethical standing to accuse other people of corruption?

Our position on the issue of fighting corruption in the country remains that there should be a holistic and all encompassing approach that is devoid of persecution and selective victimization of opponents of the government. If the government is indeed interested in tackling corruption, then it will do well to strengthen the agencies charged with fighting corruption and allow such agencies the freedom to do their work without interference.

The present situation where officials of the government like the Minister of Information will go about slandering opposition figures whilst ignoring the clear cases of corruption against members of the ruling party, will do our dear country more harm than good.

The issue of corruption in Nigeria is not political and has no partisan inclination and should not therefore be treated as a campaign issue. The ruling party must understand that Nigerians are tired of the unnecessary blame game.

Nigerians want an honest approach to the issue of tackling corruption. A situation where someone is only corrupt if he does not cross over to the APC is simply laughable. It is indeed ridiculous that clearly corrupt people are rewarded with government positions upon embracing the APC, whilst those who stay back in PDP are vilified.

Finally, may we remind the government that the mere fact of purporting to fight corruption does not take away it is obligation to provide good and effective governance for the people.

PoliticsBukhari, One Of The Nigerians Killed In Zaria Shia Massacre Worked With UNDP by SignalNG1(op): 6:02pm On Dec 14, 2015
Yemi Adebowale

Nigerians who knew Bukhari Muhammed Bello Jega have taken to the social media to react to news of his death alongside dozens who were feared dead after Nigerian troops launched an attack on members of the Shi’te Islamic sect in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a Shi’te Islamic group in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-zakzaky was arrested on Sunday by Nigerian troops, following a siege on his Zaria residence.

The Nigerian Army and members of the sect have accused each other of instigating attacks that led to the death of members of the movement on Saturday.

While the Army accused the Shiite followers of attempting to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, the Islamic movement said soldiers simply decided to attack “defenseless people”.

According to the El-zakzaky-led Shiite sect, the Army lied.

A statement signed by Isak K and posted on the website of the sect, said the claim that the COAS “narrowly escaped assassination as a result of attack from Muslim brothers and Sisters of the Islamic Movement is a blatant lie.”

The statement said Mr. Usman’s claim “raises series of questions in the mind of right thinking people.”

According to Isak, members of the movement who were unarmed were gathered for a ceremony at their Husainiyyah base, to change the flag on the dome of the building to herald the beginning of the month of Rabiul/Auwal- the birth month of the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad.

“Any excuse given by the military as reason for besieging Hussainiyyah and firing for hours, leading to the death of yet to be specified number of people, is considered a lie of the decade,” the movement said.

However, the invasion of El-zakzaky’s home by unspecified number of soldiers, Sunday, reportedly led to the death of no fewer than 20 members of the sect, including his son and wife.

Bukhari, who a civil rights advocate who has worked with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP is identified as one of those killed by Nigerian troops.

Politics12 Nigerian Newspapers Collected N120million From Dasuki As ‘compensation' -NPAN by SignalNG1(op): 5:14pm On Dec 13, 2015
Kingsley Kanayo

The dust raised by the revelation that a number of newspapers allegedly received funds from the ex-National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to settle as the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN has reacted to earlier denials of the affected media houses.

According to a report by The Sun, NPAN, in a statement by its Executive Secretary, Feyi Smith, said that the money paid to the newspapers was compensation for the disruption of newspaper circulation carried out by the military while searching for terrorist materials.

It noted that the offer of compensation by the former President Jonathan’s NSA was discussed and accepted by the Executive Council of NPAN.

The statement reads in full: “Our attention has been drawn to statements issued by the Nigerian Tribune, Peoples’ Daily and New Telegraph Newspapers claiming that they did not receive the compensation for the military disruption of circulation of newspapers by the Federal Government.

“It should be recalled that the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Executive Council meeting of March 17, 2015, held at the offices of Daily Trust, Abuja, resolved to accept the N120 million compensation and passed two other resolutions thereto:

(1) that each member-organisation accepts to donate N1 million from the compensation to the Association for the up-keep of the Secretariat;

(2) that members should bring their membership account current, by paying all past dues to the Secretariat before collecting their cheques.

PoliticsReturn Stolen Funds, Buhari Begs Looters As Ex-ppmc MD Returns $400 Million by SignalNG1(op): 4:09pm On Dec 13, 2015
Kayode Sesan

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday appealed to past Nigerian leaders who had stolen the country blind to voluntarily return their loots in the interest of the nation.

This is coming as SIGNAL exclusively reported in a tweet on Saturday that former Managing Director of Nigeria’s Petroleum Product Marketing Company (PPMC), Prince Haruna Momoh has returned the sum of $400 million to Nigeria’s treasury. Presidency sources who did not want to be named told SIGNAL on Saturday that the former boss of PPMC was still undergoing investigations for illegal crude oil swap deals running into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Buhari made the appeal in Kaduna while addressing the All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and other youths at the first edition of Kaduna Annual Music Festival.

Buhari who spoke to supporters in English Language, before addressing the crowd in Hausa language, blamed the past government of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for mismanaging the country’s treasury when appreciable revenue was generated from sales of crude oil.

“We are not fighting anybody but we are appealing to them to return the stolen funds so that we can development electricity, roads and create jobs,” he said.

According to him, the PDP for 16 years mismanaged the country’s commonwealth, which created widespread under-development and abject poverty that required creative thinking and patience as his administration strives to revamp the economy to create employment, generate wealth and tackle the security challenges facing the nation. The President however promised to judiciously utilise government funds, but said Nigerians must endure the temporary difficulties of the country’s economic reality, in order to enjoy the benefits.

He noted that a creative approach was required to revamp the economy because of the colossal damage it suffered in the previous dispensation. He however lauded the Kaduna state government for promoting creative sector, at the same time urged citizens to leverage on the opportunities provided by the government.

Politics2016 Will Be Tough For Nigeria, Finance Minister Adeosun Prophesies by SignalNG1(op): 2:38pm On Dec 12, 2015
Kingsley Kanayo

The federal government has indicated that 2016 will be a tough and difficult year for the country. Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, gave the indication at the opening of the 7th Annual Bankers Committee retreat yesterday in Lagos, noting that Nigeria was faced with some fairly significant micro-economic challenges that required some fiscal house-keeping.

“It is going to be tough and we are going to have to make extremely tough decision. We have got the resilience and space to do that,” she said.

Adeosun noted that the country fortunately has some head-room, as the debt to GDP ratio is at 12 percent and that gives some space to run a deficit budget with the specific objective of stimulating the economy.

“To do so, we need to do some fiscal housekeeping. We have to control the significant challenge we have around recurrent. If you look at recurrent at a percentage of our total budget with the just approved supplementary budget, it is about 90 percent. If we continue in that trajectory, every penny we borrow will go into recurrent,” she said.

Politics‘no Conspiracy Can Stop David Mark’, Och’idoma Assures People Of Benue South by SignalNG1(op): 9:10pm On Dec 11, 2015
Yemi Adebowale

Thousands of supporters of immediate past Senate President, Senator David Mark drawn from his Benue South senatorial constituency on Thursday came out in their numbers to show their solidarity to the senator who was visiting his Otukpo hometown for the first time since the Court of Appeal annulled his election to the 8th Senate.

Otukpo grinded to a standstill as a mammoth crowd besieged Senator Mark’s convoy as he arrived his country home in what could be described as a triumphant entry.

Upon his arrival, Senator Mark stopped at the palace of the Och’Idoma to pay his respects to the traditional ruler accompanied by his family members, supporters, party leaders and well-wishers across Idoma land.

At the palace, Senator Mark briefed the Och’Idoma on the developments relating to the annulment of his election. He noted that he had taken the development in good faith but cautioned against external influences from people who have no stake in Idoma land other than to cause division and disaffection among the people of Benue South.

In his response, the Och’Idoma said that no amount of conspiracy can upturn the will of the people. He noted that Senator Mark has done well for the people of Idoma land and “When the time comes, the people of Idoma know who to vote for.”

In a ceremony to mark his homecoming later on Thursday night, political groups and supporters of the Okpokpowulu K’Idoma converged in thousands at his Otukpo residence where he was received in a grand reception.

Meanwhile, a group by the name, All Middle Belt Youth Forum, (AMBYF) has condemned in strong terms the nullification by the Appeal Court of the election of Senator Mark, as the lawmaker representing Benue South Senatorial district, Benue State.

In a statement jointly signed by its National Leader, Comrade Moses Ojeh, and National Secretary, Comrade Andzayi Jabez Jonathan, the youths said the judgement has no place in electoral history and Nigeria’s legal system.

They described the nullification as a war against the Middle Belt region and an affront on Benue South Senatorial district electorates who chose Mark through their votes.

They added that the judgement was a fulfilment of the statement by one of the APC leaders; “If we don’t win at polling units, we win at the courts” and called on the Benue South Senatorial district electorates to reaffirm their decision by re-electing Mark at the election re-run.

Below are some photos from the grand arrival:

PoliticsSocial Media Bill: Buhari Doublespeaks, Backs ‘legal Regulation’ Of Free Speech by SignalNG1(op): 9:13am On Dec 08, 2015
In what appears to be a cave-in to intense public pressure, President Buhari said on Monday he has ‘distanced’ himself from the proposed Social Media Bill currently being debated in the senate seeking to restrict Nigerians from “criticizing”, political and public office holders.

Although the president stated that the principle of the bill was inconsistent with the democratic ideals of free speech enshrined in the constitution of the land, in an ironic doublespeak, he also said “he is not averse to lawful regulation, so long as that is done within the ambit of the constitution which he swore to uphold” drawing criticisms that the president’s position on the social media bill is unclear and neither here nor there.

READ: Social Media Bill: APC bringing back Decree 4 of 1984 – Ekiti Attorney-General
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/social-media-bill-apc-bringing-back-decree-4-of-1984-ekiti-attorney-general/

He added that he had sworn to protect and uphold the dictates of the constitution and would not in anyway go against it. Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, president Buhari is fully aware of the public reservations about the proposed legislation but assured that there is no cause for alarm “because the Senate is a democratic senate.”
Critics worry that the president’s unclear position on the social media bill and his call for calm is a ploy to get Nigerian agitators to rest public advocacy on the bill after which it would be surreptitiously passed into law.

“As a key component of democratic principles,” the President acknowledged that people in democratic societies “are so emotionally attached to free speech that they would defend it with all their might.”

A bill seeking a two-year jail term for any person who makes false allegation or publishes any statement or petition in the newspaper, radio or medium of whatever description against another person, institutions of government or any public office holder, passed second reading in the Senate last week Wednesday.

Nigerians from all walks of life have criticized the bill describing it as an attempt to gag free speech.

Civil society and pro-democracy groups have vowed to resist the passage of the bill even as the Nigerian senate insisted nothing will stop it from effecting the bill into law.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) – a leading Nigerian civil rights organisation has sent an urgent appeal to David Kaye, UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, requesting him to “use your good offices and position to urgently request the National Assembly of Nigeria, specifically the Senate, to withdraw a bill which if passed into law would undermine the internationally recognized right to freedom of expression and press freedom on the internet in the country”. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is copied in the petition.

A #NoToSocialMediaBill rally and protest to the National Assembly has been scheduled by civil society actors for 9am on Tuesday 8th December 2015. The take off point is the Unity Fountain Abuja. The protesters are revolting to what they termed an “undue planned interruption of the exercise of our fundamental right to freedom of expression without interference as guaranteed by Section 39 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

PoliticsClimate Change Is Responsible For Boko Haram – Buhari by SignalNG1(op): 4:34pm On Dec 06, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari believes the Boko Haram insurgency, violence and insecurity in Nigeria are as a result of climate change.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Mr. Garba Shehu disclosed this in an article titled; “In Paris, President Buhari Makes a Strong Case for Lake Chad.”

READ: GARBA SHEHU | In Paris, President Buhari Makes a Strong Case for Lake Chad
http://www.signalng.com/garba-shehu-in-paris-president-buhari-makes-a-strong-case-for-lake-chad/

In the opening paragraph of the article, Mr. Shehu wrote; “Ask President Muhammadu Buhari what he thinks is the chief reason for the violence and insecurity in Nigeria, including the Boko Haram terrorism in the north-east, bloody wars between cattle herdsman and farmers in central Nigeria, erosion in the east and the environmental catastrophe in the costal regions and he will say, almost upon instinct that it’s the climate change.”

According to the presidential spokesman, “The new Nigerian president who promised to tackle the problem of climate change in his inaugural speech has spun a compelling narrative on the disappearing Lake Chad, the environment around the Chad basin and how these have become the problem of the economy of the neighboring states through the failure of agriculture and joblessness which in turn have provided an easy recruitment into violent extremism. It was a narrative so compelling that it literally arrested the attention of the world as 190 countries met in Paris to agree on the first global agreement on climate change.”
