The fears of Nigerians have been confirmed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) as it today released the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Report Q2 2016. According to the statistics bureau, Nigeria’s GDP declined by -2.06 percent (year-on-year) in real terms. This was lower by 1.70 percent points from the growth rate of –0.36 percent recorded in the first quarter of 2016. It is also lower by 4.41% points from the growth rate of 2.35% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2015. The report stated that quarter on quarter, real GDP increased by 0.82 percent. Nominal GDP was N23, 483,954.78 million (in nominal terms) at basic prices during the second quarter. Nigeria’s economy probably contracted for a second consecutive quarter in the three months ended June from a year earlier after shrinking 0.4 percent in the previous period, according to a Bloomberg survey. Output in Africa’s most populous nation is weighed down by low oil production and prices, as well as a shortage of foreign currency after the central bank held a Naira peg for more than a year. The statistics office is scheduled to release gross domestic product data at 9 a.m. in Lagos on Wednesday http://thenerveafrica.com/8559/chart-nigeria-in-deeper-economic-slump-as-oil-output-falls-further/

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has often been criticized as knowing nothing about the economy, once by one of his predecessors Olusegun Obasanjo and also by renowned economist Pat Utomi. However, his fight against corruption has made many cut him some slack despite the Nigerian economy contracting in the first quarter of 2016. Corruption is endemic in Nigeria; Buhari’s promise to rid the country of the menace has, therefore, won him several loyalists, many of whom he may lose to frequency of questions about his integrity in one of the few areas his government has succeeded. The latest threat to Buhari’s integrity is the perceived shielding of close ally and current Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau. The president had on August 24, 2015, constituted a Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement in the Nigerian Armed Forces....... Nigerian inflation accelerated to the highest rate in almost 11 years in June, adding pressure on policy makers to increase borrowing costs. The inflation rate in Africa’s largest economy increased to 16.5 percent from 15.6 in May, the Abuja-based National Bureau of Statistics said in an e-mailed statement on Monday. That’s the highest rate since October 2005, according to data on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s website. Prices rose 1.7 percent in the month. The median of seven economist estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for inflation to quicken to 16.2 percent............. Nigerian businessmen have for decades survived on bank loans. While they make huge profits from ventures and have risen to the top of the industries where they operate, they hardly pay back loans. They plunged the banking sector into crisis years ago before The Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) bailed out the banks, buying all bad loans, priced at nearly N2 trillion. But years after AMCON’s intervention, many of these businessmen have refused to settle their obligations with the company....... Most entrepreneurs are driven by a common, undying desire to satisfy a need. They scavenge for business opportunities from the rubbles of socio-economic gaps around their immediate environment, allowing them identify societal needs which become the foundation of a sustainable business. Today, Damilola is the proud founder of Africa’s first eco-friendly sunglasses line. His Bamboo-framed sunglasses are iconic in style and look. After allocating about N3.87billion ($19.5 million) to the Presidential clinic in the 2016 budget, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari travels to London on Monday to see a doctor regarding a persistent ear infection. The president in the 2016 appropriation allocated $19.5 million to the Aso Rock clinic, meant to serve him, the Vice President and staff of the presidential villa. Attacks on pipelines in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger River delta region have slashed crude output to the lowest level in 27 years and shut all but four of the country’s 23 gas-powered generators, leaving much of the West African nation without electricity. Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti would have been 78 this year. It is well within the realm of possibility that he would still be alive if not for the maltreatment meted out by the Nigerian state and the lack of standard antiretroviral therapy. So, considering the delights of possibility, let us assume Fela is still alive, making music. I can only imagine what the music would be like by now – not to mention the generations of musicians who would have emerged out of the freedom and inspiration of the Shrine, Fela’s music venue in Lagos. By now Fela would be the elder statesman of the African music world, with awards and accolades galore. As it is, we have his music and the memories. Maybe that is all we need.................... With the usual owambe* accompanying it, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari finally signed the 2016 Nigerian budget into law. The country’s National Economic Council (NEC) members and National Assembly members clapped and cheered as the President signed what many analysts and Nigerians believe will halt the economic hardship that has hit the country. The budget is just one out of so many quick fix solutions the one-year old government has launched to stem the near-recession that has bedeviled it. To add to the challenges facing the country, the Giant of Africa hit a new low early this year; transmitting 0MW on its National Grid. The entire nation panicked and wondered what had happened to the recent improvements they had enjoyed. Only a few months ago, the country had reached a national record of 5000MW and despite the fact that the new government contributed nothing to the sector at the time, they were quick to take credit for the short-lived improvement; with the Presidency famously attributing the record to the ‘body language’ of the new government.
