MTN Group Ltd. Executive Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko, who returned to lead the African wireless company’s negotiations over a record $3.9 billion fine in Nigeria, is moving forward with plans to step down next month, according to a person familiar with the matter, a sign he’s confident a resolution will be reached by then. Nhleko won’t return to a non-executive role before he comes to an agreement with the Nigerian Attorney General, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. The chairman took the executive position on a six-month basis in November in order to “proactively deal” with the Nigerian authorities after Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Dabengwa resigned, Nhleko said at the time..... When AlikoDangote, Nigeria’s billionaire industrialist, revealed his plan to buy potash and phosphate from Congo Brazzaville and Morocco respectively, he was painting the grim reality in the Nigerian mining sector. First it was cement, then agriculture. Now, Africa’s wealthiest man Aliko Dangote is entering the auto manufacturing industry with an eye on a majority stake in Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) Limited. According to the governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai, the industrialist had teamed up with the states of Kaduna and Kebbi, along with development lender Bank of Industry (BoI) to submit bids for the stake which Nigeria’s “bad bank” AMCON is looking to sell. Bids closed in January. “We have submitted bids for the carmaker … with Aliko Dangote on board together with BoI, Kebbi and Kaduna State, we are confident our bid will sail through,” Reuters quoted El-Rufai to have told a conference without providing details................. http://thenerveafrica.com/4627/dangote-seeks-majority-stake-peugeot-nigeria/ |
Nigeria’s economy grew in 4Q at the slowest annual pace since at least 2010, and oil production was the biggest drag. GDP growth could be weaker still or even negative in the first half of 2016 because of the reduction in oil production after recent attacks from militants. With other parts of the economy already struggling, the full-year expansion might be the slowest in decades. A devaluation of the naira would add to risks for growth this year but boost the medium-term economic outlook. Nigeria’s real GDP growth slowed to 2.1 percent year over year in 4Q from 2.84 percent in 3Q, the worst quarterly reading since at least 1Q10. The deterioration was largely due to an 8.3 percent year-over-year contraction in oil-sector output, which the statistics office attributed to the decline in oil prices, while growth in the non-oil sector was 3.14 percent, marginally stronger than the 3.05 percent reading in 3Q......... http://thenerveafrica.com/4620/nigerias-economy-may-come-standstill-oil-attacks/ |
Nigeria’s inflation rose to a three-year high of 11.4 percent in February, up from 9.6 percent in January, as food prices soared and import costs remained high as the central bank continued its capital controls. “After increasing at the same pace for two months, the pace of increases of food prices as recorded by the food sub-index increased at faster pace in February,” the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a report published on Tuesday. The central bank has held the naira at 197-199 against the dollar since March last year through trading and import restrictions but instead of stemming inflation, prices have soared, with dollar shortages making imports costlier. The currency has also lost more value, as the naira has fallen to around 325 of the black market................................. http://thenerveafrica.com/4577/nigerias-inflation-rises-11-4-highest-rate-3yrs/ |

In Makoko, a sprawling slum of Nigeria’s megacity Lagos, a floating school capable of holding up to a hundred pupils has since November brought free education to the waterways known as the Venice of Lagos. It offers the chance of social mobility for youngsters who, like most of the city’s 21 million inhabitants, lack a reliable electricity and water supply and whose water-based way of life is threatened by climate change as well as rapid urbanization. Gregg Alton has what seems like a disorienting job at Gilead Sciences Inc. He’s paid to figure out how to sell the drug Sovaldi, which infamously retails in the U.S. at $1,000 a pill, for relatively next to nothing. The instructions for pricing the cure, which wipes out hepatitis C in just 12 weeks, basically go like this: “Get to as many patients as possible in low-income nations –and not lose money,” Alton says. “It’s very simple.”........ As at 11:40 GMT, a dollar sold for 347 naira on the parallel market in Nigeria. The currency of Africa’s largest economy keeps losing value as the central bank remains adamant, rejection calls for devaluation despite obvious reasons to do so. All economic principles support the devaluation of the naira as things stand, but political principles differ. With Nigeria’s central bank not under the full control of the institution’s governor as recent history suggests, the only way to stop the naira’s value from eroding is to let President Muhammadu Buhari know that the average Nigerian he claimed to be protecting by not allowing devaluation is actually suffering. http://thenerveafrica.com/3809/we-hope-the-president-knows-hes-hurting-us/ |
Beware of these fraudsters they can use anything to scam innocent people... When Nigeria’s President Muhammad Buhari spoke about Nigeria’s image problems recently, he was only stating the obvious. However, he was quoted out of context and was highly criticized by his people but it didn’t take long before an email believed to have originated from Nigeria reinforced the president’s position. A man who addressed himself as the Astronautics Project Manager of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) is asking for $3 million to rescue a Nigerian astronaut who happens to be his cousin and was left behind in space by some Russians....
