On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, stepped in to resolve the dispute between the management of the Port Harcourt International Airport and Ipo community, a misunderstanding that led to a temporary disruption of flight operations after women of the host community staged a protest. Ipo community, a major host of the airport located in Omagwa, Ikwerre LGA, had expressed long-standing grievances. That morning, the women barricaded the airport access road, singing, dancing and even cooking on the spot. Their demonstration halted movement in and out of the airport, causing several flight delays. Recognizing the urgency, Governor Fubara immediately intervened. He invited the leaders of the protesting women, Ipo community chiefs, airport authorities and other relevant stakeholders to a closed-door meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt. As a leader known for calm and constructive conflict resolution, His Excellency succeeded in mediating between the parties, leading to a mutually beneficial peace agreement. The Ipo community had raised concerns about neglect in terms of corporate social responsibility from the airport management. They also highlighted the absence of basic amenities, largely due to airport-related restrictions, including the lack of an alternative access route into their community. Governor Fubara, committed to lasting solutions, promised to provide an alternative road to ease the challenges caused by dependence on the airport route. Today, in fulfillment of that promise, His Excellency will flag off the Ipo Town–Airport Road Bypass, a brand-new road that will connect directly to Ipo without passing through the airport. This project will boost economic activities, improve access and permanently eliminate recurring conflicts arising from road use restrictions. In addition to flagging off this new bypass, Governor Fubara will also commission the Ikwerre Road–Igwuruta–Airport Road, a project fully completed by his administration to further strengthen the state’s infrastructure network. To highlight the importance of these projects, His Excellency has invited Festus Egwarewa Keyamo, CON, SAN, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, as the Special Guest of Honour for the flag-off and commissioning ceremonies, which will take place at 10:00am today. Time and again, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has demonstrated leadership anchored on peace, development, and the wellbeing of Rivers people. Little wonder the collective prayer across the state remains: “May Sim Fubara Succeed.” Johnmartins writes from the #GardenCity of #PortHarcourt.

Rivers State Governor, Sir, Siminalayi Fubara has again emphasized his unwavering commitment to sustaining peace, stressing that meaningful development is impossible in an atmosphere of discord. Speaking on Thursday, December 11, 2025, during the commissioning of the 10.7-kilometre Egbeda–Omerelu Road constructed by his administration, the governor said Rivers State can only move forward when its people choose unity over division. Welcomed with a red-carpet reception by an enthusiastic crowd of residents and supporters, Governor Fubara urged all lovers of the State to shun disunity and embrace togetherness. He assured Rivers people that development projects would reach every part of the State but cautioned that progress cannot thrive where conflict persists. Reflecting on the project, Governor Fubara recalled that the road was a promise he made during the inauguration of the first phase about a year ago. “We made a promise that we were going to do this project, and today I am happy that the government has fulfilled that promise made to Emohua people, Egbeda community and Omerelu people,” he said. He noted that the essence of governance is service to the people, adding that responding to their needs is a core responsibility of any administration. “We decided to do this because you know where we are coming from, and if we don’t tell our story, many won’t know what we are doing. Even in the face of tribulations, we have remained focused on delivering the dividends of democracy. We will continue to serve our people with respect and honour,” he affirmed. Governor Fubara also reiterated his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging to back all groups working towards securing the President’s victory in 2027. Giving technical details of the project, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Dr. Austin Ezekiel-Hart, explained that the contract was awarded on October 27, 2024, to Messrs Johnson Roadworks Limited. He said the road links communities in Emohua and Ikwerre LGAs and shortens travel time for motorists commuting from Ahoada East, Ahoada West and Omoku through Egbeda to Owerri in Imo State. He added that the infrastructure features a 12-metre clearing width and an 8-metre asphalt surface, comprising a 50mm binder course and a 40mm wearing course. It is complemented by 24 kilometres of drainage channels with a 1.05m² cross-sectional capacity to ensure durability and efficient water flow. In his remarks, the Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, described the road as a crucial link for surrounding communities, significantly easing movement for residents. He praised the governor for demonstrating continuity and consolidation and prayed for God’s strength to enable him to achieve even more for the people.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress has triggered a predictable political backlash from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the very platform Rivers people loyally defended for more than two decades. In a long release, the PDP described the governor’s decision as “a self-inflicted injury.” But for many Rivers people, this response appears less like truth and more like denial. For 26 years, from August 1998 till date, Rivers State stood firmly behind the PDP even when it wasn’t convenient. Yet, when the state needed support the most, the party hesitated. In moments when Rivers people faced political pressure and an attempt to weaken the mandate they freely gave, the PDP did not rise to their defence. Even Governor Fubara, once a deputy chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, found himself undermined by those who should have had his back. Instead of protecting the office of the sitting governor and the electorate who installed him, key figures within the party made decisions that jeopardised stability in the state. One clear example remains fresh; the August 2024 episode, when the PDP leadership at the national level disowned its own National Legal Adviser over an appeal concerning the 27 lawmakers. That move paved the way for those who abandoned the party to enjoy soft landing, all at the expense of Rivers people. How does a party fight harder for those who deserted it, than for a sitting governor who stayed loyal? The PDP now laments “threats to democracy,” but democracy weakens the most when political institutions fail to defend the people who stand with them. Governor Fubara’s switch to the APC is more than a political move, it is a clear statement that loyalty must be mutual. When trust is broken, those neglected will seek protection where it exists. Rather than pointing fingers, the PDP should show courage: Admit that it failed Rivers people when support mattered most. Admit that the party abandoned a governor who never abandoned them. There may be time for the PDP to reflect, but the moment to repair its relationship with Rivers State has long passed. The governor has moved forward with the people behind him, and no press statement can rewrite that reality. What Rivers people already know is simple: when they needed protection, the PDP looked away and that chapter is now closed. ~ Johnmartins writes from the #gardencity of #PortHarcourt

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has strongly condemned the state of emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a dangerous precedent. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye, Fayose distanced himself from the president’s decision, warning that the Nigerian constitution does not empower the president to suspend a sitting, duly elected governor. "Seun, I do not support an emergency rule because I was a victim of emergency rule," Fayose said. "Former President Olusegun Obasanjo did that unjustly and unfairly to me, and the constitution of Nigeria does not empower the president to suspend a sitting, elected governor of a state. That I differ totally from the position taken by Mr. President." Fayose's remarks come amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, with the emergency rule drawing criticism from several quarters, particularly from advocates of democracy and constitutionalism. The former governor’s stance adds to the growing resistance from political stakeholders who see the move as an overreach and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

...Say Sole Administrator’s actions unconstitutional, blame political crisis for NBA Conference relocation PORT HARCOURT — Chairmen of the eight branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Rivers State have issued a strong-worded statement condemning the ongoing state of emergency in the state, describing it as unconstitutional, arbitrary, and damaging to democratic institutions. In the statement dated April 15, 2025, the legal body expressed deep concern over the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly, following the emergency rule declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and approved by the National Assembly. According to the lawyers, the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Sole Administrator was initially justified as a means to secure vital federal assets and restore peace. However, they claim that the actions of the Sole Administrator have exceeded this mandate. “Rather than foster peace as promised, tension has steadily escalated while democratic institutions have been dismantled with military-style impunity,” the statement reads. “Boards, agencies, and councils have been dissolved and replaced in violation of due process and existing laws.” The group particularly decried the appointment of Local Government Administrators in contravention of the Supreme Court’s July 2024 judgment, which outlawed unelected caretaker committees in local councils. They also slammed the Federal Government’s release of state funds to the Sole Administrator without an appropriation law in place, calling it “a selective implementation” of the Supreme Court’s February 2025 judgment. Another major point of concern was the relocation of the NBA’s Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu, which the branch leaders attributed to the political instability and heavy-handedness witnessed in Rivers. “The loss to local businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, is colossal,” the lawyers said, lamenting that the state missed the opportunity to host over 30,000 lawyers from across the country. They also condemned the reported assault on peaceful protesters and journalists on April 7 by security forces at the CFC Flyover in Port Harcourt. “Such actions are unacceptable in a democracy. Our Human Rights Committees are ready to pursue legal redress for the victims,” they declared. The lawyers made five key demands: That the Sole Administrator should cease the dismantling of democratic structures and stop acting outside his mandate. That the appointment of LGA administrators be reversed. That the federal government rein in the Sole Administrator and ensure the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers within the six-month emergency window. That the National Assembly’s Peace Committee should immediately begin reconciliation efforts. That security agencies must respect citizens’ rights and stop aggravating the crisis. “We reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law and to providing pro bono legal services to victims of rights violations,” the statement concluded. “We stand with the people of Rivers State in these trying times and will continue to defend the integrity of our State and our democracy.” The statement was signed by Cordelia U. Eke (Mrs.), Chairman of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch, on behalf of all eight branches in the state.

It came as no surprise to many of us as Rivers women pour into the streets in their thousands, united in one voice, demanding the restoration of true democracy in Rivers State and reaffirming their unwavering support for our God-given Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. Their protest is not just political, it is deeply personal. It is the voice of a people—particularly the women—who have felt the impact of governance that speaks to their everyday needs, their businesses, families, conscience and their future. One of the many symbols of this impact is the ongoing construction of the Ngo-Oyorokoto Road in Andoni Local Government Area. For decades, Oyorokoto—hailed as the largest fishing settlement in West Africa—was practically inaccessible by road. But to Rivers women, especially those who have built livelihoods around seafood trade, Oyorokoto was far more than a distant fishing hub. It was their source of income, their trading post, their pride. On May 18, 2024, during the commissioning of the Andoni section of the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Unity Road, Governor Fubara announced and approved the construction of a road leading to Oyorokoto. That moment marked the beginning of a transformation that is already rewriting the story of that region. The project—a 13.5km engineering marvel—is not just a road. It’s a lifeline. Built on raft and deck on pile, this "elephant project" will not only open up access to the Atlantic but also unlock economic opportunities never before imagined. It is a gateway to prosperity for the hardworking fishermen and traders, many of whom are women. But Oyorokoto is only one example. Governor Fubara’s administration has consistently rolled out initiatives that prioritize women’s empowerment. A notable instance is the N4 billion SME loan launched through the Rivers State Microfinance Agency in partnership with the Bank of Industry. 58% of the beneficiaries of this 3,066 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) soft loan are women. From roads that lead to trade to funds that finance dreams, the Sir Fubara's administration is making it clear: Rivers women matter. This is why they march—not just for politics, but for policies that work. Not just for a leader, but for leadership that delivers. They are standing for democracy. They are standing for justice. They are standing for #SimFubara. #RiversWomenUniteForSIM |
Rivers people watched in disbelief as a group of women, flanked by police officers, took to the streets this morning not to demand better governance, but to shamelessly call for an extension of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas’ controversial sole administratorship. This sudden twist came barely days after Rivers women bravely staged the now-famous #BringBackFubara protest, demanding the reinstatement of their legitimate Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. That peaceful demonstration, which rattled the powers that be, appears to have pushed Ibas into panic mode. Multiple sources allege that Ibas, devastated by the organic show of love for Governor Fubara, resorted to sponsoring a counter-protest,ironically using the same security forces he had earlier instructed to suppress the women’s march for justice. But what’s fueling his desperation? Whispers from within say the retired naval officer may be trying to cling to power after reportedly discovering a staggering N264 billion left in the state’s coffers by Governor Fubara. It’s no surprise then that he would attempt to orchestrate a charade to extend his tenure under the guise of “people’s support.” Let it be known: Rivers people are not fools. We are not cowards. And we will not allow power-hungry impostors to rewrite the will of the people. The staged protest may fool a few, but Rivers State sees through the deception. #ReinstateOurPeaceIcon | #BringBackFubara | #RiversPeopleAreAwake

They call Governor Siminalayi Fubara an ingrate and we couldn’t agree more. But not for the reasons they think. Here’s what INGRATE truly means when you look at the man behind the name. I – Integrity: Governor Sim stands for truth, transparency, and doing what’s right—even when it’s not popular. His leadership is driven by principles, not politics. N – Noble: He is a humble and noble servant of the people, not swayed by pride or pressure. His actions reflect dignity and a deep sense of responsibility. G – Godfearing: Sim Fubara is guided by faith, not fear. Every step he takes is anchored in a reverence for God and a desire to lead with a clean heart. R – Resilient: Despite the storms, he remains focused, calm, and unshaken. His quiet strength is his greatest weapon. A – Accountable: He leads with prudence, ensuring every kobo counts. Governor Sim is accountable to the people, not to any political godfather. T – Tenacious: He doesn’t back down from protecting democracy and the mandate of Rivers people. He stands firm, even in the face of intimidation. E – Empathetic: A leader with a human heart. He listens, he cares, and he connects with the real struggles of the everyday Rivers man and woman. So yes, Sim Fubara is an INGRATE—an Inspiring, Noble, Godfearing, Resilient, Accountable, Tenacious and Empathetic leader. And that’s exactly the kind of governor Rivers State needs. #ReinstateOurPeaceIcon #BringBackFubara John Martins - Gist Reports

When Governor Siminalayi Fubara visited the newly commissioned Government Girls Secondary School in Ahoada, he didn’t just stop at celebrating a milestone in education. What caught his attention and sparked swift action was the appalling condition of the Old Port Harcourt–Ahoada Road and the dangerously worn-out bridge leading to the school. Disturbed by what he saw, Governor Fubara didn’t waste time. Right there on site, he approved the immediate reconstruction of the road and bridge. True to his word, work is now ongoing. Earth-moving equipment, skilled engineers, and a well renowned indigenous construction company are actively transforming what was once a neglected stretch into a modern, motorable road that will boost access, safety, and economic activities in the area. And the best part? The project will be completed in record time. This is what purposeful leadership looks like. This is what keeping promises means. This is why the people are saying— #ReinstateOurPeaceIcon! #BringBackFubara! John Martins - Gist Reports

GOV. SIM FUBARA IS DELIVERING DEVELOPMENT BEYOND POLITICAL SENTIMENTS In the face of political distractions and unwarranted opposition, Governor Siminalayi Fubara continues to demonstrate what true leadership is about, prioritizing the welfare of the people above all else. One such testament to his unwavering commitment is the ongoing construction of the Agba-Ndele - Abua Link Road with a bridge, a project that had long been abandoned but is now receiving the attention it deserves. This crucial infrastructural project was initially awarded by former Governor Rotimi Amaechi in 2013 but suffered outright neglect under the immediate past administration. Left to rot, the project became another unfortunate symbol of uncompleted government promises, until Governor SIM Fubara took office. Barely a month into his administration, on July 29, 2023, Governor Fubara paid an unscheduled visit to the abandoned project site. His visit was not for optics but for action. He immediately directed the recall of contractors to mobilize back to the site, ensuring that the project, which is vital to the economic growth of Rivers State, was revived. His singular focus? The well-being of the Rivers people, not the politics behind the project’s origin. The Agba-Ndele-Abua Link Road, upon completion, will be a massive infrastructural win. It will significantly cut down travel time for farm produce moving from Abua to Port Harcourt by half, ensuring that agricultural goods reach their markets fresher and at reduced transportation costs. This infrastructural boost is a major stride towards strengthening the state’s economy and supporting local farmers, traders and businesses. The project includes a 1.2km approach road at Agba-Ndele and a 240m-long, 9.6m-wide concrete bridge linking Emuoha and Abua/Odual Local Government Areas. This strategic connection will not only facilitate smoother movement but also enhance inter-community trade and economic synergy between the benefiting LGAs. The project is near completion and will be commissioned before the end of Governor Fubara's first term in office. Also recall that His Excellency had on 30 October 2024 commissioned the 8.168 kilometres Emoh/Iyak/Ighom/Elok and Emoh-Egbolom Access road in Abua/Odual Local Government Area, an integral road that will further enhance accessibility to the Agba-Ndele Link Road for the Abua axis. While many well-meaning Rivers people have applauded Governor Fubara for his commitment to completing this vital infrastructure, some political elements saw things differently. Instead of celebrating progress, they viewed the project’s revival as an attempt to continue the legacy of former Governor Amaechi. Thus, they weaponized the narrative, tagging Governor Fubara as disloyal, a move that partly fueled the political crisis in the state. But for Governor Fubara, governance is about service, not personal or political ego. His #RiversFirst mantra is not just a slogan but a guiding principle that ensures every decision he makes is in the best interest of the people. He remains undeterred, focused on delivering impactful projects that uplift lives and enhance the state’s economic growth. Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership style is a refreshing departure from the politics of abandonment and vendetta. By choosing to complete a project that his predecessor neglected for years, he has sent a clear message: development must never be sacrificed on the altar of political rivalry. His actions reflect courage, vision, and a deep love for Rivers people. As the Agba-Ndele - Abua Link Road nears completion, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when leadership is driven by service rather than political interests. Governor Fubara has proven yet again that his administration is about real development, and Rivers people are the ultimate beneficiaries. This is the kind of leadership that builds legacies, not just for today but for generations to come. Governor Fubara is leading by example, reminding everyone that true governance is about putting the people first, no matter whose name is on the project. As Nigerians weigh the implications of the recently declared state of emergency in Rivers State, many political analysts will agree that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, has made one of the most politically costly decisions of his career by refusing to give peace a chance. Beyond the devastating effects on Rivers State, where the people will bear the brunt of the political crisis, Wike has also made himself more politically vulnerable than ever. While he may believe that his current alignment with President Bola Tinubu secures his position, the political landscape is constantly shifting. Tinubu, after completing his constitutionally permitted eight years, will exit the stage. Meanwhile, Wike is likely to nurture another presidential ambition, just as key figures like the Senate President and other federal power players are poised to do. His role in the ongoing Rivers’ political crisis could come back to haunt him when the time for political reckoning arrives. Moreover, Wike’s refusal to embrace peace has not only led to the appointment of a sole administrator but has also exposed sensitive dealings of the Rivers State Government, both past and present, to outsiders who should never have had access to such classified information. In a nation where politics is a game of leverage, this exposure could be weaponized against him in the future. For a politician with grand ambitions, Nyesom Wike may have unknowingly laid the groundwork for his own downfall. The same political actors benefiting from the current state of affairs, where their loyalists have been strategically deployed under the guise of a state of emergency, could one day turn against him. If that day comes, Wike might find himself in a perilous situation, much like Haman in Esther 7:10—ensnared by his own machinations. In politics, power is fleeting. The question now is: has Wike, in his bid for dominance, just written the first chapter of his own undoing? John Martins writes from the peaceful garden city of Port Harcourt. |
In a startling reminder of administrative practices past, many Nebusites appear to have conveniently forgotten that numerous permanent secretaries who should have stepped down upon retirement or been asked to resign, remained in their posts well beyond their time. The phenomenon, critics argue, is a direct consequence of the practices instituted during Nyesom Wike’s tenure. During his time in office, Wike notably instituted and extended the contracts of several permanent secretaries, effectively sidestepping the conventional retirement protocols. One glaring example is that of Rufus Godwins, who, despite having reached the point of retirement during Wike’s first tenure, was kept on contract as head of service until as late as 2023. This prolonged retention was not an isolated incident. It has now become clear that many officials, who should have exited the system, continued to serve, an outcome that Gov. Fubara, in his first year in office, found himself compelled to address by replacing several of these entrenched figures. The implications of these decisions are significant. By deferring the retirement of key bureaucrats, the previous administration not only disrupted the expected rotation in leadership but also set a precedent that continues to impact the functionality and renewal of government services. The uploaded photos show Gov. Sim Fubara swearing in and issuing official cars to new permanent secretaries to replace many Wike had retained on contracts. This marked a historic moment, as it was also the first time in over a decade that permanent secretaries were issued official cars, a tangible symbol of a shift in administrative practices. Facts, as they stand, make it clear: history should not be allowed to repeat itself. We must remember and learn from the past, ensuring that the promise of transparent and accountable governance remains unbroken. #RiversFirst #PeacefulRivers #NoToEmergencyRule #DefendDemocracy #JusticeForRiversState John Martins Writes From The Peaceful Garden City Of Port Harcourt.

In the dead of night on Sunday, October 29, 2023, chaos struck the Rivers State House of Assembly as hoodlums invaded and set ablaze the hallowed chambers of the Assembly Complex. The fire outbreak severely compromised the structural integrity of the building, making it unsafe for lawmakers and workers alike. However, the deteriorating condition of the Assembly Complex was not a new concern. The 9th Rivers State House of Assembly had previously expressed worries about its poor state. During the commissioning of the official residence of the Speaker in July 2022, the former Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, openly criticized the deteriorating state of the hallowed chambers. He maintained that project execution was not the responsibility of the legislature but of the executive, promising that his administration would construct a befitting legislative chamber for the lawmakers. GOVERNOR FUBARA’S PROACTIVE INTERVENTION True to his leadership style, His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, swiftly moved to assess the damage caused by the fire and to explore possible measures to restore the facility. However, what should have been a routine inspection turned into an orchestrated assault on the Governor himself. Shockingly, overzealous security officials attacked the elected Governor of Rivers State, firing tear gas and water cannons at him. This unprovoked aggression was later revealed to be a ploy to shield certain lawmakers who were attempting to execute an ill-fated impeachment plot against the Governor. Despite this brazen conspiracy, Governor Fubara remained undeterred. Upon assessing the destruction, he immediately directed security agencies to launch a full-scale investigation into the incident. He also tasked the State Ministry of Works with conducting an integrity test on the facility to determine its viability. A NECESSARY RECONSTRUCTION, NOT DEMOLITION Following technical reports from the Ministry of Works and persistent appeals from lawmakers for a befitting Assembly chamber, it became evident that retaining the existing structure further weakened by fire would be courting disaster. Thus, in the interest of safety and functionality, Governor Fubara took the decisive step of approving the dismantling of the compromised structure and awarding a contract for the construction of a modern, befitting hallowed chamber for the Rivers State House of Assembly. It is, therefore, mischievous and outrightly deceptive to insinuate that Governor Fubara arbitrarily woke up one day and decided to demolish the legislative chambers. The facts speak for themselves: the Assembly Complex was already in a deplorable state, the fire incident further weakened its integrity, and the Governor acted decisively to prevent future disasters. The previous administration acknowledged the need for a new hallowed chamber but failed to actualize it. Now, amid political challenges, Governor Fubara has taken up this responsibility, demonstrating his commitment to good governance and democracy. Governor Siminalayi Fubara deserves commendation for his swift response and commitment to providing the lawmakers with a world-class legislative chamber. Those peddling falsehoods to the contrary are merely driven by selfish political interests, but the truth remains undiluted: Rivers State is under the leadership of a Governor who prioritizes progress over political distractions. Fresh concerns have emerged over an alleged plan by President Bola Tinubu’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas to announce new Local Government Area (LGA) Administrators tomorrow, despite the clear provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the autonomy of LGAs. This move, if carried out, would amount to a blatant disregard for democratic principles and a violation of the Supreme Court’s ruling, which reaffirmed that local governments must be governed by elected officials, not handpicked appointees. Sources indicate that names of supposed administrators have already been compiled, raising fears of an orchestrated attempt to subvert the will of the people. Such actions could plunge the local government system into further crisis, setting a dangerous precedent for executive overreach. Nigerians must remain vigilant against this unconstitutional maneuver, as it threatens the foundation of grassroots democracy. Any attempt to impose unelected administrators on LGAs must be met with firm resistance from law-abiding citizens, political stakeholders, and civil society groups. Will the rule of law prevail, or will impunity reign? The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining whether democracy holds firm or is trampled upon.

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said Sir Siminalayi Fubara didn't make any effort to rebuild the assembly complex. I know that the statement came as a result of the lies they told him. However, as history has shown time and time again, that lies have a way of unraveling in the face of truth. The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, walked through the construction site, witnessing firsthand the progress being made, it became evident that the State Assembly Complex is indeed a reality, contrary to the lies they told Mr President. In a world where falsehoods may momentarily cloud the truth, it is reassuring to see individuals like the Sole Administrator taking proactive steps to debunk misconceptions. This visit not only showcases the truth that Sir Siminalayi Fubara upholds the integrity of the legislative arm of the government, but it also serves as a beacon of light in an era where misinformation can easily spread. The truth, as evidenced by the visit today, will always shine through the darkness of deceit, and make Sir Siminalayi Fubara come out victorious in these political happenings in the State. Dr. Amadi Eze.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that Senator Samuel Anyanwu has not been reinstated as the party’s National Secretary following a Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, March 21, 2025. In a statement released by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), the party reaffirmed that the apex court’s ruling upheld the internal mechanisms of the party in determining its leadership and validated Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh Okoye as the substantive National Secretary. The party emphasized that Anyanwu was replaced in October 2023 after he emerged as the PDP’s governorship candidate for the Imo State election. Following due process, the South East Zonal Executive Committee nominated Udeh Okoye, a decision ratified by the NWC, Board of Trustees, PDP Governors’ Forum, and formally communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). With the Supreme Court’s decision, the PDP stressed that its leadership structure remains unchanged and urged members to remain united in strengthening the party’s future.

...Barr. Woko urges Rivers to handle crisis like Lagos Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the people of the State to keep standing firm on the side of the truth following the ongoing crisis in the State. Gov. Fubara, who made the call during the inauguration of the rehabilitated Fire Service Station at Rumuodomaya, Obio-Akpo Local Government Area, on Friday, March 7, 2025, insisted that those supporting his administration were doing the right thing. He said: "I want to appreciate the people of Obio/Akpor for their support, I can feel it here. I want to appreciate the support of the good people of Rivers State believing in us knowing that your trust is the right thing and that you are standing on the side of truth. He assured that his administration will continue to do what is right and thanked God for the opportunity given to him to continue in the effort of providing services to the people. Gov. Fubara said that the fire station is remodeled, rehabilitated and equipped to show that the interest of the people remained most important to his administration. He explained that the essence of the project is to safeguard the lives of the people and the property of every citizen of Rivers State. Inaugurating the project, the Special Guest of Honour, Chief Hanny Woko, called for an end to the ongoing political impasse in Rivers State, saying that it is giving the state a bad name. Chief Woko asked the people of Rivers to emulate Lagos State where he said politicians quarreled but immediately found a solution to their problems. He said: "I want to use this opportunity to call on every reasonable Rivers son and daughter that there should be an end to every conflict. Rivers State has been always in the news for the negative purpose and we condemn that. We should borrow a leave from our sister States. The governors are governing their people without any friction anywhere. "Yes in human relations there may be room for frictions but what is important is to put the State first. No personal interest should override the collective interest of the state. I urge everyone using this opportunity to borrow a leave from Lagos State. "They quarreled but they came to a round table to sort out their problem and the state moved on. Rivers State should emulate Lagos. Right now our state is in a turmoil but we thank God that God will continue to give His Excellency the wisdom to manage this crisis and I am absolutely sure that he will come out unscathed and he will serve out his two tenures as statutorily provided in our constitution." Chief Woko commended the governor for all his laudable projects and for touching the lives of Rivers people despite the ongoing distractions. According to him, "It is important to know that at the heat of this time you are still going about commissioning projects. There are projects already lined up for two weeks. You have come to serve Rivers State and be assured that Rivers people will protect this democracy and you. "There is no pretence about it, the love is organic and we will make sure that we will continue to support you. As an Ikwerre man this state gave us the privilege and honour to serve for 16 years and some months without any disruptions. Equity and fair play demand that we allow our Ijaw ethnic group to serve out their tenure." Giving description of the project, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Samuel Anya Gov. Fubara the rare initiative of rehabilitating the facility built by the Rotimi Amaechi's regime and abandoned thereafter without use. He said the facility has 54 office spaces and accommodation as well as 34,000 capacity water tank to provide fire fighting service to the people. On his part the Head of Local Government Administration in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Ichechi Amadi thanked the governor for prioritizing the interest of the people in remodeling and rehabilitating the Fire Service Station. He noted that despite distractions and adversities the governor has continued to deliver life impacting projects as the Fire Service Station will mitigate the often fire disasters that have in the past devastated the people. - Gist Report

Mr. President, the dear President of Nigeria, our own President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, lend me your ears. We, the Rivers people, have always supported the Government at the center; we have always worked with the Government at the center. This Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has convinced the Rivers people that they must stand with their President, and so we stand with you. There might be persons telling you stories, especially when they see people like me who were core Atiku men. They will say, "Don't you see? It is Atiku people that are with the Governor." There are also Atiku people with them there in Abuja, but the Governor has convinced us that the place to be is with our President. And, Mr. President, we stand with you. We stand with you because that is the right thing to do. The elections delivered you as our President, and so we stand with you. The elections also delivered this Governor—our Governor, our son. For the first time in 24 years, the Ijaw nation, in more than eight Local Government Areas of Rivers State, has an opportunity to have one of their own as the Governor of this state. We stand with him; we have no choice. The work our Governor has done in this state in the short time he has been in office shows that he prioritizes our interests and truly cares for the unity of this nation. This Governor, at a time when our funds were seized, made sure that there was no problem in this state. He ensured that essential services continued. He didn't try to create problems for the Federal Government. Mr. President, support this Governor. This Governor is your ally. Support this Governor, that is the right place to be. Standing by and working with Governor Sim Fubara is the right thing to do and I urge you, Mr. President, to stand with Governor Sim Fubara. - Chief Abiye Sekibo Speaking At The Commisioning Of The Remodeled Borokiri Fire Service Station and Firefighting Vehicles, Port Harcourt.

For years, the Mile One Fire Service Station stood as a shadow of its former self, a neglected relic of a system that had failed to prioritize emergency response infrastructure. Dilapidated buildings, abandoned equipment, and an overall state of decay made it a mere shell rather than a functioning lifesaving facility. But today, that narrative has changed, thanks to the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a few hours, the newly rehabilitated Mile One Fire Service Station will be officially commissioned and restored to its full operational capacity, to the glory of God and for the service of the people. This transformation is not an isolated one; it is part of a broader initiative by Governor Fubara to revamp critical public service infrastructure across Rivers State. The Mile One station is one of three fire service facilities that have undergone a complete overhaul and are set to be unveiled in the coming days. The before-and-after images speak volumes. What was once an eyesore of broken walls, rusting gates, and obsolete fire trucks has now been replaced with modern, well-equipped facilities ready to serve the public efficiently. The new fire stations are fitted with upgraded fire trucks, emergency motorcycles, and ambulances, ensuring a swift response to fire outbreaks and emergencies across the state. Governor Sim Fubara's commitment to the safety and well-being of Rivers people is evident. By reviving a crucial agency that had suffered neglect for over a decade, his administration is demonstrating that governance is about service, action, and tangible results. With the commissioning of these modernized fire stations, Rivers State now stands better prepared to combat fire disasters, protect lives, and safeguard properties. Indeed, Governor Siminalayi Fubara is here to serve. John Martins writes from the Garden City Of Port Harcourt.

REMARKS AT THE VISIT OF THE MEMBERS OF THE RIVERS STATE CAUCUS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. FALSE NARRATIVE BY SOME RIVERS STATE LAWMAKERS IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, ABUJA: THE TRUE STATE OF AFFAIRS AND SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT ON THE SITUATION IN RIVERS STATE. PROTOCOLS. 1.) Our attention was recently drawn to a visit as well as a Press Conference by some Rivers State National Assembly members in sympathy with former Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule and his group-Committee of Former Lawmakers. 2.) At the press conference, the group claimed "to put a stop to the falsehood and misrepresentation of facts on the judgments of courts as it affects the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Governor of Rivers State". 3.) However, contrary to the false claim by the group, the truth of the matter is that the objective of the Press Conference was to mislead the public on the true situation in Rivers State. It thus becomes necessary on our part to set the records straight and put the public in proper perspective, because lies unrebutted soon overtakes the truth. Besides, as Mark Twain once said, "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." 4.) To set the records straight, the true position regarding applicability of the judgment of His Lordship, Hon Justice Omotosho in the case of RIVERS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY Vs. THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA (SUIT NO: FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023), is as follows: a.) The judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho does not touch on the status of Rt Hor Martin Amaewhule and his group of 27 as former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly; b.) Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule and 26 others had lost their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly following their voluntary defection/cross-carpeting which happened on the floor of the House of Assembly in the full glare of the public on 11th December 2023. c.) In a plethora of cases including DAPIANLONG Vs. DARIYE (2007) 8 NWLR (Pt. 1036) p. 332 (SC) and A.G. FEDERATION Vs. ABUBAKAR ((2007) 10 NWLR (PT 1041) 1 at 178 (SC), the Supreme Court of Nigeria had declared that the proper and only interpretation to be given to the provisions of Section 109(1)(g) and Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution of The 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended is that an elected lawmaker in Nigeria who after an election on the platform of a particular political party, defects to another political party, AUTOMATICALLY loses his seat in the affected legislative House from the date of his or her defection. The pronouncements of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in these cases, having not been set aside nor overruled in any subsequent judgment of the Supreme Court, remain the law till date on issues of defection of a member of a legislative House in Nigeria. Also, in the case of ABEGUNDE Vs. ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY (2014) LPELR-23683 (CA), the Nigerian Court of Appeal reiterating the law as affirmed by the Supreme Court, made it clear that loss of seat upon such defection is both AUTOMATIC and MANDATORY. d.) The legal effect of these provisions and the Supreme Court judgments is that, as of 11th December, 2023 when Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule read out the letters of defection of himself and 26 others on the floor of the Rivers State House of Assembly, they lost their seats and automatically and mandatorily became former members of the House. e.) The only legal implication of the above is that, Hon Martins Amaewhule and his group of 27, remain former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and accordingly are no longer entitled to parade themselves as members of the House or to partake in any business or affair of the House. f.) It is worthy to note that neither the fact of their defection nor any issue relating to their defection nor on their status as former lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly was raised, submitted or discussed in the proceedings leading to the 22 January 2024 judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho. Instead of placing before the Federal High Court, the truth and material facts about their status as ex-lawmakers, to afford the Honourable Court an opportunity of deciding on the real issues, the claimants in that case (Hon Amaewhule and co) craftily invented lies and falsehood calculated to mislead the Honourable Court. Unfortunately, it is common knowledge that, Truth exists, and it does not go away just because one has invented lies. In Elvis Pasley's words, "Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away." No matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it. g.) Another material fact is whether the Oko-Jumbo led lawmakers can carry on with businesses of the House after the others automatically and mandatorily lost their seats by virtue of their voluntary defection. This issue was not raised nor discussed in the Hon Justice Omotosho judgment which is thus inapplicable in the circumstance. However, the rule that applies in the circumstance has long been laid down by His Lordship, the Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen, JSC (as he then was, while delivering the lead judgment in the Supreme Court case of DAPIANLONG V DARIYE when he declared that "There is no doubt that there existed in the Plateau State House of Assembly 14 vacant seats as a result of cross carpeting. It is my view that until the vacancies created by the carpet crossing members are filled by the process of by-election, the Plateau State House of Assembly can only transact such legislative duties that require the participation of less than 2/3 majority of ALL the members of that House, which duties definitely excludes impeachment proceedings", This position is yet to be overruled by any court in Nigeria, and thus remains the law. h.) The Press Statement by the said Rivers Abuja Lawmakers in sympathy with Hon Martins Amaewhule and his group of former lawmakers during their visit which, claims that "there were several reliefs aside from the presentation of the 2024 budget sought by the Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule led Assembly before the Hon. Justice J.K. Omotosho" in FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023 (RIVERS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY V. THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA). Contrary to the above false claim, the truth they have chosen to continue to hide from the public is that none of the said "several reliefs" in that case touches on the two material issues in the matter, namely: The legal effect of the defection of an elected legislator in Nigeria; and (b) whether the remaining minority lawmakers can carry on with businesses of the House. The judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho does not affect issues not submitted for determination in the case. i.) In deciphering what the Court decided in the judgment in FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023, it is the contents of the judgment that will be looked at and not what the parties assumed the Court to be saying. This position has been affirmed by the Nigerian appellate Courts. See for example AYITO Vs. COMMISSIONER OF LANDS & HOUSING (CROSS RIVER STATE) & ORS (2021) LPELR-54588(CA) (pp. 28 paras. D). The misleading overtures of Amaewhule and his group cannot make the judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho to become relevant to issues not decided in the case. Hon Martins Amaewhule and his co-travellers appear to have lost sight of the trite position of the law, that a case is an authority only for what it decides which was emphasized in the Supreme Court case of OGWUCHE Vs. AGBO & ORS (2023) LPELR-60207(SC) (Pp. 23-24 paras. F). The judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho is an authority and relevant only for what it decided. The law is that judgment must always be read in the light of the facts on which the case was decided, and must not be stretched beyond the facts presented before that Court. See OBIOMA Vs. STATE (2020) 3 NWLR Part 1710, Page 45 at 61 Para D-G per Kekere-Ekun, JSC. 5.) It is laughable that the group of former lawmakers led by Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule are now claiming that their defection "never took place." It is unfortunate that these dishonest characters "in the words of Prof. Lumunba are they truly Honourable members or Horrible members?." had in 2023 found themselves into the House of Assembly of Rivers State as lawmakers but unfortunately, by their own VOLUNTARY defection on the floor of the House on 11th December 2023, got themselves out of the House. Evidence of their defection is everywhere for the public to see including an affidavit sworn before Hon. Justice Okoronkwo. These afterthought and feeble attempts to deceive the public are a waste of time as most members of the Nigerian public and legal stakeholders in Nigeria are now too enlightened and too knowledgeable in the situation in Rivers State to be misled by the dishonest antics and laughable volte-face by Amaewhule and his group of ex lawmakers. 6.) As one who has sworn to defend the Rule of law, the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara will continue to uphold the Nigerian Constitution and the Rule of Law in Rivers State. The Governor has never disrespected and will never disrespect the Court of law. 7. We therefore call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the National Judicial Council, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, all institutions in Nigeria, as well as well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the mischievous and deliberate misrepresentation of the facts and the effect of the judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho on the situation in Rivers State by Hon Amaewhule and co. It was George Washington who advised that "The Constitution is the ultimate guide which we must never abandon." In his own words, Abraham Lincoln has this to say about the supremacy of the Constitution: "Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties." In the words of Booker T. Washington "A lie doesn't become truth, wrong doesn't become right, and evil doesn't become good, just because it's accepted by a majority" 8. We shall continue to give you updates as may be necessary. Thank you and God bless. Signed: 1. Rep. Awaji-Inombek D. Abiante Ph.D Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency. 2. Rep. Boma Goodhead Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency. 3. Rep. Boniface Emerengwa Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency. 4. Rep. Anderson Allison Igbiks Okrika/Ogu-Bolo Federal Constituency. 5. Rep.
