Blogger Todd Bishop has got a great story on a Microsoft Research project for creating sphere-shaped touch screens. He writes:

"After months of rumors, Microsoft researchers are taking the wraps off a prototype that uses an internal projection and vision system to bring a spherical computer display to life. People can touch the surface with multiple fingers and hands to manipulate photos, play games, spin a virtual globe, or watch 360-degree videos."

Bishop points out that the basic sphere is already available from the OEM, Global Imagination of Los Gatos, Calif., but notes that Microsoft researchers have tweaked the features and functionality quite a bit. While it seems unlikely that a globe will ever replace the LCD flat screen, it does lend itself to numerous applications that can't be done on a flat screen. These include using a monitor in the center of a room for conferences or video games and displaying global data in a geographically accurate way.

TRIPS is a demonstration of a new class of processing architectures called Explicit Data Graph Execution (EDGE). Unlike conventional architectures that process one instruction at a time, EDGE can process large blocks of information all at once and more efficiently.

Current "multicore" processing technologies increase speed by adding more processors, which individually may not be any faster than previous processors.

Adding processors shifts the burden of obtaining better performance to software programmers, who must assume the difficult task of rewriting their code to run well on a potentially large number of processors.

EDGE technology offers an alternative approach when the race to multicore runs out of steam

Each TRIPS chip contains two processing cores, each of which can issue 16 operations per cycle with up to 1,024 instructions in flight simultaneously. Current high-performance processors are typically designed to sustain a maximum execution rate of four operations per cycle.

Though the prototype contains two 16-wide processors per chip, the research team aims to scale this up with further development.

good for you na2day, i think uve started thinking the right way.  and of course cloud computing is an old concept and has been in the minds of a lot of people for a while but its implementation on a larger scale as it is been done currently gives me cause for concern.
of course what is built by man can always be destroyed by man and when it comes to computers, all it takes is a mind more intelligent than the other. there will always be room for loops, bugs and overrides.
im a religious guy so my comments will be biased. i am not too comfortable with the idea of placing a chunk of my docs personal or impersonal in the server of somebody such that i lie mostly when asked to fill in personal info on loads of sites but although wiv the current trend there is no escaping it. but that is a fear that will be better expressed in the religious section.

well mannyforlife, im only expressing my opinions, actually google chrome OS is not yet out so whatever we say is based on speculations. well you said you stay in the US and bla bla bla, um tht there would be little worry concerning privacy, well just type in google 'cloud computing' and you will see that a lot of issues will be about privacy. pros--- free, fast boot up tym based on speculations,since its on linux it will be open source, few compatibility issues etc
cons- market monopolization since a lot of users will be forced to use google apps, google makes money mostly from adverts so expect to see adverts popping up in the wrong places and at the wrong time, i read its beta status wont expire till 2038 which means that errors will not be totally apologized for. wireless cloud computing is the new deal and apart from its pro that you will have probably an unlimited storage space, there will be privacy issues which means that you will not know which organisation will have access to your files. that will be a problem for a lot of people. Believe me the list goes on and on. Google will have the right to change your icons since most of their apps are copyrighted and a lot of things will give you less power to customize your system. advert advert and more advert. useless info popping out on your screen. broda.
well as for market share, google will definitely face stiff competition from other netbook OS manufacturers and i really dont think that the bigboys like microsoft whose main focus is the pc will be greatly affected. the chrome OS might be a spark that will burn brightly for a while until users get become disappointed. again who knows??.

What is the next evolution of the internet?, some people already have homes and families on facebook and other blogging forums. one day the world will wake up and instead of u going to operate your comuter, your computer will walk to operate you, where are we going, THIS IS STRICTLY FOR TECH GEEKS.

this could be as a result of an open document inside the flash or a virus in the system you are formatting from or a totally corrupt flash disk, or that your flash has a lock botton, il advice you to format the flash from another system and if that doesnt work, check if it has a lock button. if it doesnt, your bin should be looking forward to welcoming a new guest.

and fo those confusing things and mixing them up, there is no seperate google OS called "web OS' besides the Palm OS running on the Pre. the google web OS is the chrome OS; its web OS because chrome OS is essentially a browser that can stand on its own. dont expect to start running Maya or Renderman on it.

stop comparing windows 7 with chrome OS. they are not on the same level. win 7's ONLY worthy competitor is Mac OS X.

my guy, try do ur research well before u send posts like these. google chrome OS is currently a netware because they do not currently have the technology to make the transition from a single browser to a full fledged operating system like windows  that is why their target is currently netbooks. Nevertheless according to their recent blog they have plans to develop the OS to suit various demands. give them a break kid,  they are just starting.
