Yes you have to notify all that she has changed names and then each organisation will tell you how to effect that change. For BRP you will need to get a replacement BRP or simply always leave the country and return with the old passport and the marriage certificate copies as you maybe asked by border police.
I also forgot to mention, Nigerian passport change of name by marriage requires a marriage certificate, newspaper publication, affidavit of change of name, husband’s consent/permission letter allowing her to bear his name grin and husband’s passport data page

Yes, we have all that is needed. We did the publication and all that before leaving Nigeria. We just didn't have enough time to do the change before leaving for the UK. Be like na to leave am like that jare. make she dey use her maiden name dey go.

for ur wife to change her name..
she has to do her NIN.
If she has a previous NIN with her maiden name, then it requires modification of data on nin. She will have to modify from her maiden name to her marital name.
If this is her first NIN she needs to register as normal.
Go online and google Nimc centres in UK, fond the closest to you. It is not free. Costs between 35 to 60 pounds for an adult.

When she gets her NIN, she will need to apply for a passport. If she is using your name, pls the NIN details have to correspond with what she will go onto to fill for her passport. Any difference and she would not be able to get a passport without going for change/modification.
If it is agreed she wants to change to marital name on her passport and she has gotten a NIN with same marital name, please she should start with filling the change of data request form part and not reissue.. change of data will ask her what she is changing.. she simply selects due to marriage and also selects what has happened to her former passport.. either expired, damaged, lost or active.
With that she will be able to complete the right form and pay for it online.

As for your son, all the things you have written about british citizenship and what not is false. Ur child can not leave the UK and enter back for now without a passport and brp.
So if u plan on travelling with him you should get him a passport and brp.
He can also travel on an emergency travel certificate to Nigeria but it is one time and he would need to do a passport in Nigeria before coming back otherwise no way out.
So if you decide you want to get a passport for your child now at the High Commission, you should start with getting him a NIN. Same process for getting a NIN for an adult is applicable for a child. All now need NIN for passport even a 1 day old.

Thank you for this. God bless you. I might have to settle with continuing with her maiden name. Another issue raised is if we are supposedly going to change to my name, how do we go about changing the name on all her UK documentations. Do we have to go one by one to all the agencies like bank, dvla, her employer to notify them of the name change and therefore a new brp, new credit card, new dbs will be issued on her new name. The cumbersomeness of doing all these is what's putting me in this dilemma

In my opinion, there's no need for her to change name unless you both have reasons she really needs to.

Okay, this means for us to proof we're married we will have to tender our marriage certificate as evidence seeing we bear different names on our passport and brp.

Good evening good people

I need guidance on this please.

My wife's passport has expired and we are preparing to renew it. Now the issue, my wife's passport has on it her maiden name which she didn't change after we got married and made it down to the uk. She wants to change the name to my name but we know she has to do that on her NIN first before we put in the passport renewal application. We got a place to do the NIN thing here in the Uk and the person said it can be done.

1.Someone is telling us that it would no longer be a passport renewal but she'd have to apply for a new passport
2. How easy or should i say, how possible will it be to change from her maiden name on all her Uk documentations eg. School, Job, Bank accounts, brp, driver's license, credit cards, tenancy agreement etc......to her new name (Mine)

That is where the issue is, the stress of having to do all that is already putting me off. Please i need advise. And also we intend to apply for NIN and a Nigerian passport for my 7weeks old son. Pls what are the things i would need to apply for it. And is it advisable to apply for a passport for my son yet ?? he was birthed here in the UK, there's been talks of us not getting the child into the Nigerian system as this would affect him as per say if we want him to have british citizenship and all. Cos we intend for him to visit nigeria even if its just for 2wks.

Edakun, pls advise.

Sure Start Maternity Grant

for a student having a child in the uk. Is this qualified as public fund ? Her Midwife is pushing to apply for this grant for her. Trying to discourage her not to take it, but she won't listen.

You sent the message based on the weight of your emotions..... That is fully understandable.......

God bless you! I hope everyone learns from the experience shared here and not follow the voice of those passing false information here. Like there's not one false information here that can mislead anyone. I laugh hard.

quite rude of you to come here and spew this nonsense. … Nairaland and it’s contributors are doing a great job and most of us are beneficiaries. Any information you get here is purely for entertainment and educational purposes. You are to cross check before you make a decision. Don’t come here and spew Trash if you can’t make use of your number six. And u get into trouble.

Okay, if you read with proper understanding and detail. you would have read where i mentioned that i had fallen victim of such circumstance before stumbling on a post where someone is arguing that students are entitled to council house here. Reason why i had come here to warn anyone who comes across such and intend to go after council home. Despite some trying to argue that students are not entitled to public funds, some are still adamant saying they're entitled to go after council homes which is of course public funds. Read to understand and not just to castigate. Just my 2cent

The bolded is not nice at all and it is totally false. If Nigerians don't advise, you will complain, if they do advise, you will complain.
I have been in the UK for a while but still come to this thread to learn. Don't tar everyone with the same brush based on the few experiences you have had.

The intention was not to paint the Nigerian community black. Might have used the wrong sentence / choice of words. But speaking from my pain and experience, that might have come out wrongly. I apologize to anyone this might have offended.

My brother, no vex.
But you may have been scammed by someone or misused the information you got here. That doesn't taint this forum, especially this thread.

I read this thread for almost a year before I moved to the UK and read it from time to time since. I comment when I have information to pass on, in the spirit of giving back. If you read well, you will notice that most people provide experiential information, i.e. what they have lived through and actually done.

E fit be say some people's information is out of date in some cases, when the activity in question is something they did long agao and haven't done since (there was an example of that some pages back), but that is not deliberate and is simply well-intentioned error.

I think nobody comes here to form elder, we come to help our community in the small ways we can (including the BDC guys, lol). I appreciate those who created and keep this thread going and have nothing bad to say about any of them. I would also like to think that the small info wey me don give for here is also correct and no mislead anyone, because all na my own personal experience.

I've only actually contacted one person on this thread, when I was job hunting and dealing with interviews, the OgaHR (who is exactly as he sounds here, blunt, direct and to the point, but otherwise friendly and speaks very good Igbo), and he gave me very good information, assitance and encouragement. Encouragement especially, like most people wey dey find work for this UK, sometimes the number of rejections you receive go drop your spirit. (His chilled beers/kai kai/Scottish firewater dey wait am anytime he comes to Edinburgh). From the way others come across here, I can only believe it would be the same if I contacted Madam Ticha for help with the mortgage I dey plan for instance, or Mamatukwas who is doing good work on the mamas and pikins thread, or OgaLexus for how to carry the finest London babes, etc.

Your post is fallacious, sir. Repent and correct it.
Make I return to siddon look mode.

You can try to talk down about my post. Call it fallacious or whatever. I just said my peace and its left for you to take it how you want it. I have never engaged anyone here and not even you. So feel free to tag it anyhow you want.

Best you post advice you received, that was wrong. .... So others can learn .......

Nobody is either a fountain/island of knowledge.........

Should I post my passport here, to show you I am not using ori o lori ............. grin cheesy

I commend your sincerity on this thread and you're one of the few people i have come to respect. Mind you, i have been on this thread longer before now. I only just read as a guest and i don't comment on this forum. The reason for my statement is this. I stumbled on one of the post where someone says students are entitle to go for council house. Well, before i stumbled on debates about the information council houses here by someone on this thread, i had already fallen into that mess. Let me warn intending people who want to take that information and run with it. Students are not entitled to Council Houses. Yes, its cheaper, but you are not entitled to go for it. Its public fund. I wouldn't want to go into details about what happened to me. But someone mislead me to fall into it and the council didn't take it easy. But pls, stay away from public funds/house or whatever if you're on a student visa.

Since arriving the Uk this year, one thing i have come to know or notice about Nigerians who have lived here longer is them always claiming to know everything about anything. They always claim to be knowledgeable about everything that concerns the Uk especially when they notice you're new in the UK and seek for advice on things. My brethren, be careful with these type of people. I'd say they're 90% of Nigerians here who have these traits. They'll mislead you, give you false information and leave you to your fate if it goes wrong for you. I see some of them on this thread and wont mention name. Sometimes i wonder if they do these things intentionally just to get you into some type of difficulty or problem. I am saying this from an ugly experience i just got out of and that has made me have a rethink of wanting to really join the Nigerian community. Be mindful of "some" Nigerians here who always want to claim elder and Mr know it all. Them no sabi anything and most of them who claim to have been here longer don't have papers, na pali oni pali dem dey use and trust me, you that came in via student route, work visa are way better than them. They are filled with pure undiluted wickedness. Just my 2cent though.
