Suspended civil servants petition Okowa over irregularities
Published July 23, 2020

Matthew Ochei, Asaba

Some suspended civil servants in Delta State have petitioned Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the reported reinstatement of some people who did not apply for job in 2015.

Okowa had suspended over 3,000 workers recruited during the last administration of Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2014 over irregularities.

He thereafter set up a committee to look into the recruitment, which consequently led to the reinstatement of 450 disengaged workers.

The Chairman and the Secretary of the group, Clement Erhadje and Victor Asini, respectively, in a petition to the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, the Commissioner of Police, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Department of State Services, appealed to the state government to come to their aid.

The petition read in part, “It came as a shock to us that out of the names of the 450 people reinstated, over 80 per cent of them did not apply for the job in 2015. Also, they did not have appointment letter in 2015 and most of them just graduated two years ago.

“How come people who did not apply for the job in 2015 were reinstated and given the job and people who applied for the job were not reinstated? It is obvious that it was highly influenced politically and money was used to buy the slots of the original owners (2015 suspended civil servants).”

The group condemned the process, describing it as high-level corruption and vowed that the affected people would not accept nepotism and favoritism that could jeopardise their chances of being reinstated into the civil service.
