Kawangware is a slum located about 15 kilometers west of the city center of Nairobi. Hundreds of thousands of people reside in this large slum. Safe drinking water is expensive in Kawangware.

Korogocho means ‘crowded shoulder to shoulder’ in Swahili. Around 200,000 people live in this slum, which covers 1.5 square kilometers . Korogocho was founded a shanty town on the then outskirts of Nairobi..

This slum neighborhood is located in Lagos, Nigeria. More than 86,000 people live in Makoko. Here you will find many structures; homes, schools, built on stilts above Lagos Lagoon. It is one of the oldest slums in Nigeria and was originally a fishing village settlement.

4. West Point, Monrovia (Liberia).

The West Point slum is located on a peninsula which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean between the two rivers Saint Paul and Mesurado. The slum houses around 75,000 people. It is plagued with problems like overpopulation and diseases. Tuberculosis has killed many residents of West Point.

3. Mathare (Kenya).


Mathare is not just one slum. It is a collection of slums in Nairobi . More than 500,000 people live in Mathare. Gang violence is very common in these slums. Some people living here are involved in brewing illegal alcoholic beverage chang’aa.

2. Kroo Bay (Sierra Leone).

Kroo Bay is a sprawling slum filled with debris in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is one of the poorest areas in the center of Freetown, the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. Over 95% of the houses don’t have a toilet. The river that runs through the Kroo Bay slum carries with it waste from houses up the hills in the city.
