Nigeria qualified for the final of the women’s 4x100m relay Thursday night despite finishing fifth in the heat won by the Tianna Madison-led USA quartet. The Nigerian girls stole into the final slated for Friday night as the fastest loser of the two heats ran at the Olympic Stadium. Though the Nigerian girls ran their season’s best time of 42.74secs, it was obvious that they could not match the strong field that included USA, Trinidad and Tobago, The Netherlands and Brazil. Christy Udoh, who opened the race for Nigeria from lane two, failed to match up the Americans and the rest of the field. She struggled to hand over baton to Gloria Asumnu. Asumnu had a slight advantage before handing over to Damola Osayomi. A poor baton exchange slightly slowed Blessing Okagbare before struggling to the finish line in the fifth place. Okagbare was excited that Nigeria made it to the final, even as the eight team in Friday’s clash. The other teams in Friday’s final include Jamaica, Ukraine and Germany. Tosin Oke did his best but was not good enough to get him to the podium. He finished seventh on the overall standing of the Men’s triple jump with a 16.95m that was below his Personal Best of 17.22m. World Champion, American Christian Taylor lived up to billing, winning the gold in 17.81m (a season’s best). His compatriot, Will Claye picked the silver medal with 17.62m while Italian Fabrizio Donato (17.48m) was the surprise bronze medallist. |

The Lagos State Special Offences Court, Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, sentenced a 52-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Jemilat Oseni, to three months imprisonment for “using five underage children to beg for alms”. Two other women- Mrs. Rainat Ado and Mrs. Zainab Abubakar- were fined N10, 000 each for releasing their children to Oseni for the purpose of alms begging. A prosecutor from the state’s Ministry of Justice, said the acts were “illegal and a violation of the rights of the children”. The prosecutor, who did not give her name, said, “Four of the children were not hers. “Two belonged to Mrs. Rainat Ado; one belonged to Mrs. Zainat Abubakar; one is her grand child. Only the last is her child.” It was learnt that Oseni, who is from Osun State, was arrested while begging for alms with the children by officials of the state Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit at Seme Border. The children were put between nine months and 11 years old. However, both Abubakar and Ado claimed ignorance of what Oseni did with their children. Ado said, “Oseni told me that she wanted to use the children as cover to smuggle some goods from Benin Republic. “She explained that the children would make custom officials at the border to pity her and allow her to go with her goods.” She added that Oseni usually give her some quantity of rice after the trip to Seme. It was learnt that a worker with the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation saw the woman and the children at Seme and promptly reported the matter to the task force officials. The court also ruled that the five children be kept in custody of WAPA |
No fewer than 2,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) on Thursday defected to the Labour Party (LP) in Akure, Ondo State. According to the the News Agency of Nigeria, the PDP and the ACN members in Idanre Local Government Area decamped to LP, barely two months to the Ondo State governorship election. Some of the defected members were former ACN Women Leader, Mrs Akinniyi Sade, former ACN Youth leader, Mr Abudu Bankole and former PDP Vice Chairman, Mr Bolutayo Deke, among others. Deputy Governor Alli Olanusi received the new entrants on behalf of Gov. Olusegun Mimiko at the governor’s office in Akure. Mimiko, while thanking the people for appreciating the good deeds of his administration, warned them against succumbing to the antics of the opposition parties. According to him, the opposition are bent on disparaging the various visible good works of the administration. The governor said that there were enough opportunities in the LP for everybody to come along in the task of transforming the state, adding that the number of years a member joined the party counted for nothing in the party. “Your recognition as members of our great party is not based on your numbers of years in the party. Your contribution to the success of the party is what we use to rate you as authentic members. “Idanre is one of the strongholds of LP. I want to appeal to you to go back home, look for your voters’ card and make sure that nobody comes around to deceive you. “You must not allow anybody to buy your card, that is your right, and that is the only way you can safeguard the future of this state,” Mimiko said. He encouraged the women among the decamped former PDP and ACN members to key into the various empowerment schemes of the government by forming themselves into cooperative societies to enable them to benefit from the loans’ scheme. The leader of the defectors, Mrs Akinniyi Sade, said that the Mimiko-led government in the state had impacted positively on the lives of the people. She said that in Idanre and its environs, the administration had alleviated the suffering of the people by reconstructing the Amegbe bridge, construction of the modern mega market, roads and various empowerment programmes for the people. The women leader assured that the people of Idanre would record 100 per cent votes for Mimiko in October to ensure that more dividends of democracy could be extended to all parts of the state. |
It was harvest of deaths in the Anambra State capital Thursday as four persons were feared dead when a trailer rammed into five other vehicles at the popular Nnamdi Azikiwe University junction, while an Okada rider was killed by armed robbers as he was going home. Those killed when the driver of the trailer lost control, were street hawkers operating at the ever busy spot where heavy construction is going on. Those injured during the accident were taken to the nearby hospital for treatment by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, who also deposited the dead bodies in the mortuary. Other security operatives later joined FRSC in controlling traffic in the area. The vehicles involved in the accident at the ever busy junction where massive road rehabilitation is currently taking place were a trailer with registration number XD 230 MKD, a Toyota Camry with registration number BJ 192 YAB, a Mercedes Benz with registration number LND 778 XA and a bus XH 146 JJN and Peace Mass Transit with registration number XW 556 ENU. The owner of the ash- coloured Toyota Camry, Pastor Fabian Epechukwu said he was traveling to Warri in Delta state with some of his course mates at Nnamdi Azikiwe University when the incident took place. The suspected armed robbers had shot the Okada and when he fell, they took his mobile telephone from his pocket and took his motorcycle. An eye witness said that the victim managed to get up and started running, but fell down after 100 meters and was later confirmed dead |
