SUSPECTED bank robbers and a fraudster, Nurudeen Oyeniyi, were on Thursday paraded by the Oyo State Police command. Twenty-three year Oyeniyi, a 300-level Mass Communication student of Lead City University, Ibadan, was arrested for allegedly defrauding some foreigners of millions of dollars. The suspect, who confirmed his involvement in Internet fraud, told the police that he got into the business two years ago. He also accepted to have swindled two women of huge sums of money. He said, “I am involved in yahoo business (Internet fraud). I had duped some women living in the United States of various sums of money. “I was arrested by the police as a suspected armed robber but I told them that my mother owned the car (Range Rover Sport) that they saw me with. “My mum is a doctor and my dad a retiree. “I got into the internet fraud business one year ago. The first deal fetched me $17m while the second fetched me $25,000.” The police also paraded one Kingsley Aniankan, a house keeper, who allegedly robbed the wife of his former employer. Aniankan, who was sacked by his employer for questionable character, later attacked their residence and stole jewelry and laptop. The police said Aniankan sold the stolen items to one Alhaji Umaru Haruna in Ibadan. Also, corpse of one of the suspected robbers, who reportedly attacked a first generation bank in Iseyin on Wednesday, was displayed by the police. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Joseph Mbu, said the stolen gold was valued at N25m. The suspect, who the police chief claimed sold the gold for N13m, said he used the remaining sum to build a house at Aba Pan, Oluyole Extension and to buy a Bora Volkswagen car. He said, “The receiver confirmed that he knows Kingsley and that he used to buy gold from him. Investigation shows that he had bought about N9m worth of gold from the suspect.” |

Two officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Douglas William and Abba Ishaku, who were arraigned on October 17, 2010, before an Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Abubakar Umar in a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence, were on October 4, 2012, sentenced to five years imprisonment without an option of fine. The two officers were arrested in 2010 in a ‘sting operation’. Until their arrest, the duo were stationed at the reception of the EFCC headquarters in Wuse, Abuja. Trouble started for the officers when they allegedly demanded for N100, 000 from Kullima Kachalla, a former Chairman of Bama Local Government in Borno state in 2010, by posing as investigators of the EFCC. They were alleged to have asked Mr. Kachalla to send them the money in order to bribe other investigators of the Commission to destroy a petition written to the EFCC, which indicted him (the former chairman) for alleged mismanagement of public funds. During trial, the court was told that Mr. Kachalla had alerted the EFCC of the action of the two accused persons, necessitating an undercover operation, where an EFCC officer, posing as Mr. Kachalla’s representative, arranged a meeting with the accused. Ishaku, second accused, allegedly called Mr. Kachalla by telephone, asking him to bring the money to the Commission’s office in Wuse, Abuja. It was in the course of the receipt of the money that the two staff were arrested and subsequently arraigned. In his ruling, Justice Umar said because the convicts have suffered enough humiliation, their sentence should start from the date of their arraignment being October 18, 2010. |

With the successful full digitization of its past years examinations results, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in conjunction with Sidmach Technologies Limited, has developed an online results verification portal. The e-results portal will domicile online results of examinations conducted by WAEC from 1980 till date . With this, details will be captured alongside are candidates’ bio data, subjects with corresponding grades as well as passport photographs. A good resource and verifiable tool for employers of labour, institutions of higher learning, government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, etc, the e-Results access will among others, help curb result falsification, check impersonation and eradicate trauma associated with loss of document. However, explaining how the e-Results Verification Portal works, the Chief Technical Officer of Sidmach Technologies, Mr. Dayo Arogundade said, “To access the service, an interested organisation needs to launch the WAEC website. ‘WAEC Results Verification’ link, make payment if using for the first time and complete the subscription form. Username and password generated will be used for subsequent transaction.” The solution, developed using the Microsoft Visual Studio.Net with SQL Server backend, is very secured. Speaking at the official launch of the portal in Lagos, the Managing Director of Sidmach , Mr. Hassan Alao said, “It is indeed refreshing to note that the WAEC online results verification portal will promote integrity and efficiency. Ultimately it would make life easier for students, individuals, institutions and organisations that require the service. One can only but imagine the socio-economic advantages that will accrue to the nation as a result of the time, money and other resources that would be saved with the introduction of this service.’’ He f described the launching as yet another first in improving the authenticity and integrity in the service delivery process of the nation’s educational sector. Alao commended the leadership and innovations that the HNO and WAEC had demonstrated in developing and deploying the service, noting that the council blazed the trail in e-registration of candidates for examinations. Speaking earlier, the outgoing Head of the National Office, WAEC, Dr Iyi Uwadiae said, “With the launching of the WAEC online results verification portal, the council has, again moved a step higher in the business of conducting public examinations. The launching of the Online Results Verification Portal is coming almost 10 years after the launching of the Online Results Checking Portal known as WAEC-Direct, in February 2003 and eight years after the take off of the electronic registration portal in November 2004; commencing with the registration of candidates for the May/June 2005 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).” |
The excitment of fresh students that was given admission was abruptly interupted by the uprecedented upsurge in ANSU fresh students school fees. Many of the students was thrown into pandemonium at the manner of impromptu increment in school fees of the institution. It should be recalled that earlier this year, ANSU students in Uli campus of the institution staged a riot to protest uncomfortably one hundred and nineteen thousand naira(N119000) for non- professional course students and one hundred and twenty nine thousand naira (N129000) for professional course students, many academic staff offices including that of the vice chancellor of the university were burnt and crucial documents were lost. It should be noted that attempt by the school security agents known as anti-cult to curtail the angry protesting students were impeded by enormous stone-missile rained upon them by the rioting students which caused them to took to their hills. It took the combined effort of state anti- robbery squard with their armoured personal carrier and other governmental security agencies to brought the situation under control. Gunshots were persistently fired on air, rubber bullets were also targeted on students and tear-gas was also used to dislodge the students. At the evening, the school environment was left solitary with charred remains of burnt anti-cult vehicle and burnt roofs littered the school premises. Before the one hundred and nineteen thousand naira and one hundred and twenty nine thousand naira(#119000 and #129000) school fees increment, Gov peter obi was quoted saying "Education in Anambra state is not meant for the poor". It's disheartening to announce to fresh and existing students of the institution the present increment in school fees to two hundred and thirty thousand naira(#230000) by the school management. It is overwhelming the hardship caused by this increment and the students wish to ask Gov Peter Obi and the school management this question; Do you realize that over 65% of parents in Anambra state are peasant farmers who hardly feed their family, how would they realize the huge sum to pay their children school fees? How many industries have your administration set up since you assume office, to provide employment for unemployed Anambrarians? How much are you paying the state civil servants? It's only when you critically analyze these questions that you will know the agony you have throne upon the people of Anambra especially the students of Anambra state university. |

The reported killing comes days after a major operation against the Boko Haram militant group in the town. The lecturer, who did not want his name to be used, told the BBC’s Hausa service that the students were asked to say their names after lining up. He says it is not clear why some were killed and others spared – some of those killed were Muslims. “Everybody is scared and staying indoors now,” he said. He added that students were now leaving the town – they have dmolestd tree branches over their cars, which is a traditional sign of neutrality in Nigeria. Aituaje Iruobe, who is mostly known as WAJE, has become a smoking gun on the music since she hit stardom with her bit part in P-Square’s ‘Do Me’ with her soulful voice and ringing octaves but as other stars celebrated the 52nd independence day of Nigeria, the beautiful singer was lending out her heart to the less- privileged as she launched her NGO known as Waje Safe House. The singer said the idea to reach out to some needy people in the society began to germinate when she visited a children’s school at the slum quarters of Makoko in Lagos, an area populated by mostly low income earners. There, she said she met a lady, Doyinsola Ogunye, who works with an aid agency, already doing something to better the lots of the indigent children and between them the seed to do something to help others began its growth of love. “Faith without works is dead, we won’t just hope, we will continue to work our way through” Waje said of her intention “ The Project is one very dear to me. It concerns some of the poorest but most cheerful kids ever . Every quarter, Waje Safe House will partner with an NGO to raise funds and awareness for their projects” she said. Explaining further on what will be the mission of the NGO, Waje maintained that her NGO has no particular mission but said it will be a ‘Safe’ house for other NGOs and their projects with basic mission of raising funds for them to achieve their set goals. Already, she is said to be working with Doyinsola Ogunye’s outfit. “The Waje Safe House is an initiative of Waje that is aimed at supporting NGO’s and causes that need help to achieve their goals and targets” the singer posted on her Facebook wall and this seems a good way to drive cogent meaning to the acronym of her stage name ‘Waje’ which means ‘Words Aren’t Just Enough’ |
