WARSAW (AFP) – Al-Qaeda may have played a role in the killing of four Americans in an attack on a US consulate in Libya, including the US ambassador, Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski said Wednesday. “It’s possible that what happened is tied to worrying developments in eastern Libya and probably also in Egypt where we see extremist activities by Al-Qaeda playing on peoples’ emotions,” Komorowski told reporters, citing an intelligence report by Poland’s interior ministry. Washington’s envoy to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed when a mob outraged over a low-budget American-made Internet video mocking Islam stormed the US consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday. “While we support the Arab Spring, this development is a cause for concern,” the Polish leader said. “We’re worried about seeing a resurgence of political elements thinking in terms of Islamic fundamentalism or radical political or military methods.” |

The Ondo State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has said he will not increase tuition fees at the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) in Akungba- Akoko and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPOLY) in Owo, if elected in the October 20 governorship election. The frontline lawyer assured workers of both institutions and teachers in the state that their allowances, which have not been paid by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, would be fully paid, if he becomes governor. A statement by the Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) , Mr Idowu Ajanaku, said the governorship hopeful spoke in Ayegunle-Akoko, where he was hosted by members of the Omoluabi Forum. Responding to a question by a students’ leader, Akeredolu said: “I know the importance of education. Although some states increased fees because they have no money, God has blessed us with oil wealth in Ondo State. Therefore, I say today that my government will not increase tuition fees. That is final. You can quote me on that.” The ACN candidate promised to pay the allowances of AAU workers, which have not been paid in the last 32 months. He added that teachers too would be paid their outstanding allowances in full. Akeredolu said the bursary for Ondo State indigenes in the higher institutions would be paid, if he becomes governor. The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President said an ACN administration would pay special attention to indigent students, so that they can be well educated. He said his administration would not waste money on mega schools but renovate existing schools and build new ones in rural areas. Akeredolu promised to focus on health and job creation. He restated his commitment to the creation of 30,000 jobs within his 100 days in office and step up infrastructural development, among others. The Coordinator of Omoluabi Forum, Chief Gabriel Tolu Obaleye, said the group is supporting Akeredolu because of his vision for the state. He said the people of Ondo State are tired of the Mimiko administration, which he accused of building cosmetic projects, such as town halls, boreholes, markets and fountains. Obaleye said the residents’ essential needs are potable water, motorable roads, among other vital infrastructure. He said the ruling Labour Party (LP) administration has not inaugurated a road in the last three and a half years. Akerdolu explained that the development in Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun and Edo states indicate that Ondo State would witness massive development. The ACN candidate inaugurated the Independent Campaign Group of the forum and donated N1 million. |

More floods have hit Northern and Central Taraba in Taraba State, ravaging communities on the banks of River Benue. The Chairman of Ardo-Kola Local Government, Taraba State, Dr. Jalo Buba, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Sunkani on Monday that more than 3,000 hectares of crops, mainly rice, had been destroyed by the floods in 13 villages in the area. Buba, who spoke to NAN shortly after visiting the areas affected by the floods, also said over 8,000 people had been displaced and were now taking refuge in churches, mosques and primary school buildings in Mayo-Ranewo and Tau villages. He listed the 13 villages located on the bank of River Benue, which were completely destroyed by the floods, as Shomo-Gale, Shomo-Ndajule, Karim lazei, Gadaguru and Shomotawa. Others are Garinseini, Jiru-Dauda, Jiru-s-Sabon- Gari, Jiru-Tsohon Gari, Jiru-kasa, Doi and Munci as well as part of Mayo-Renewo. The chairman said farm produce mainly rice and maize, covering over 3,000 hectares had been affected, a development he explained, could cause food shortage in the state. Buba said the area contributed over 70 per cent of the total rice produce in the state annually, and that almost 80 per cent of such rice farms had been consumed by the floods. He also said that residential buildings, fishing materials and boats were swept away by the disaster. Buba said that f materials had been provided by the council and the state government, but that more was needed to assist the victims, whom he said, lost all their belongings to the floods. He called on the National Emergency Management Agency, other relevant agencies and well-meaning individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the victims[b]More floods have hit Northern and Central Taraba in Taraba State, ravaging communities on the banks of River Benue. The losses that traders of the Labaowo International Market, Ibadan suffered in an inferno that gutted the market on Wednesday cannot be forgotten in a hurry. Within minutes that the fire started, their means of livelihood were consumed. Over 300 hundred shops with property worth one billion were destroyed. Painfully, some of the traders just got some loans from banks and co-operatives to boost their businesses. Though no life was lost, some of the traders would have chosen death as an option if they knew that the inferno would consume all they had. The fire started some minutes past 10 a.m. when the gum that a girl was trying to sell to her customers attracted fire from a nearby shop where another woman was cooking. Before they knew what was happening, the shops were on fire which later engulfed five buildings that house over 300 shops in the densely populated market. Alarm was raised immediately, but owing to the distance and inaccessibility to the spot, help could not come on time from the Oyo State Fire Service and other companies in the area. As at 3.05 p.m. when Sunday Vanguard visited the market, billows of suffocating smoke still enveloped the market. Traders were running helter- skelter. Some of the traders who were lucky to retrieve some of their wares from the fire stood on guard to prevent hoodlums loitering the area from causing further damage. A woman who could still not comprehend how fate could be so cruel to her declined to make comments even when one of the leaders of the market introduced our correspondent. She merely shook her head and turned back. Another affected trader, Mr. Taiwo Olabode, was stunned to speechlessness when Sunday Vanguard visited him. He was trying to mutter some words, his lips were moving but no word came out. When next he tried, it was tears that streamed down his face. The president of the market, Alhaji Lukman Alaka, told our correspondent that items such as electronics, motor spare parts, generator spare parts, building materials and many others were lost to the fire incident. He said, “the fire started some minutes past 10 this morning(Wednesday). Five buildings with over 300 shops were burnt. You too can see the damage caused by the fire. When asked what caused the fire, Alaka said a girl was selling gum to her customer and it caught fire because a woman was cooking very close to her. “Suddenly, we saw balls of smoke accompanied by fire. We called all the Fire Stations close to us, but, the response was not immediate. I called Challenge fire station and another one at Mapo. When I noticed that they were not forthcoming, I had to go to Mapo on Okada before help could come. But, before we got back to the market, the fire had gone out of hand”, he said. “On the property lost, it can’t be less than one billion. Many traders were affected. Some could not even retrieve any item from their shops. The Fire Service came but it was too late. We would be happy if the government can provide a Fire Station for us here.”, he lamented. The market traders leader complained that when fire gutted the market about three years ago, the government sent its officials who came promising heaven and earth, but nothing came. According to him, the only help that the Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration can do for them is to give them a fire station in the market. Mr. Sikiru Olayiwola, the leader of the legislative arm of the market, said it was a pity that successive governments in the Oyo neglected them because they were not civil servants. “Governor Ajimobi should help those of us who are not civil servants too. They should let us have a sense of belonging and give us opportunity to enjoy in this administration too. If they don’t want these people to die, they should do something very urgently”, he said. One of the victims, Sarafa, an Eletrical part seller whose shop was gutted by fire. Pix by Dare Fasube He ruled out any suspicion that somebody somewhere could be responsible for the incident, pointing out that the fire that gutted the market three years ago ignited when a spark of fire landed on mattresses. “As for this one, it happened during the day time. We all saw how it started. So, I don’t suspect any foul play from anybody. Another affected trader, Mr. Tijani Amoo, who sells fan belt and bearing in the market, explained that he just collected a bank loan worth N800,000 to buy wares. “Most of us in this market collect bank and co- operative loans. I just collected N800,000 and used it to stock my shop. Tell me, how can I pay back the loan now? Oh God!, he stated. Amoo said he lost all the items. Though, he was not far away from the scene of the fire, by the time he knew, smoke had covered my shop and then fire. Muniru Lasisi, who sells generator spare parts, he said he lost goods worth two million, while Babatunde Olusegun, who lives at Ogbere Oriyangi, Ibadan, said his motor spare parts estimated at N500,000 were destroyed. Also, Femi Akinlabi, motor spare parts seller, said the girl that was selling gum was injured in the fire incident and had been rushed to hospital. He claimed he took a bank loan of N400,000 and estimated his losses at over N600,000 because he had some goods before he took the loan. The Director of State Fire Service, Engineer Kareem Oyekunle, said his men were still battling the fire as at 3. 56 p.m. but was hopeful that the fire would be put out. His response contradicted that of the market leader, noting as soon as the distress call came, he and his officials rushed to the scene.[b]The losses that traders of the Labaowo International Market, Ibadan suffered in an inferno that gutted the market on Wednesday cannot be forgotten in a hurry. An ocean surge that sacked communities around Kuramo Beach, Lagos, on Saturday, left one person dead and 15 others missing. Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency, Femi Oke- Osanyintolu, said the surge occurred around 2a.m. on Saturday, when residents were still asleep. "We have recovered one body and we are searching for about 15 people that are still missing," he said. "The area has been cordoned off and we have already asked residents to vacate the place immediately." He also urged residents living or doing business in other coastal areas of the state to vacate immediately, adding that such communities adjoining beaches and water fronts are prone to havoc. Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Segun Oniru, has ordered the immediate evacuation of the state’s waterfront communities. In a release made available to Daily Times NG, Oniru explained that the move was necessary to avert disaster at the waterfronts. He also said the move was necessitated by seven days of high waves accompanied by a strong ocean surge which hit the country’s coastline, including Lagos. He identified places from which residents are expected to move as including, Badagry and Ojo Waterfront areas, Bar Beach, Kuramo Beach, Goshen Estate, Maiyegun and Alpha Beach. According to him, the State emergency services had been mobilised to monitor the situation and respond accordingly. It will be noted that coastal areas in the state, particularly communities surrounding Alpha Beach, have recently been sacked by ocean surges. Residents have blamed the recent experiences on ship wrecks and abandoned vessels on the sea. However, in spite of promises from the state and federal governments, the situation has continued unabated. When Daily Times visited the beach, the area had been cordoned off and residents ordered to vacate the vicinity. Construction vehicles were seen on site frantically trying to curtail the surge by sandfilling the shores of the beach.

The attack forced other banks and shops in the town to close abruptly with the Ado/Ifaki Road and Ifaki/Oye Road deserted. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, told our corespondent that nobody was killed in the operation. He said, “The robbers came in four vehicles and attacked a police station and the bank. We closed down the whole state and our men pursued the hoodlums and caught up with them at Aramoko.” |
Onitsha (Anambra) – No fewer than 938 prominent sons and daughters of the South East zone are alleged to have been kidnapped between January 2008 and August 2012, a civil society group, Campaign for Democracy (CD), has said. Police authorities, however, disagreed with the figures, saying it was the figment of the imagination of the group that released the figures. In a statement signed by Mr Uzor Uzor and Dr Jerry Chukwuokolo, the CD chairman and secretary respectively in the South East, said the kidnapped persons paid ransoms said to be valued at about N1.2 billion during the period. The statement also said that kidnappers collected substantial amounts from their victims ranging from N5 million to N30 million per individual. “Anambra State has the highest incidence of kidnapping of 273 persons, especially within the commercial axis of Onitsha and Nnewi. And it is happening at a constant rate for over five years now. “Imo State with the current up-surge in kidnapping incidence has recorded 265 cases, while its residence is living in heightened fear. “Abia follows behind with 215 persons so far; although the incidences of kidnapping had continued to reduce for some months now after the death of a notorious kidnapper called Osisikankwu. “Enugu has recorded 95 cases in the past five years. However, the state has recorded the highest in abduction of government officials. “Ebonyi is the least of all the five states in the South-east. It has recorded 90 cases so far officially. However, apart from kidnapping the state is laden with communal crisis,’’ it said. The statement maintained that there was a need to take decisive actions to checkmate the spate of kidnapping in the zone. “One practical way of doing it is the demolition of established structures or buildings used by kidnappers to advance their operations. “The governors in the zone must work in synergy to address the issue of security and draft laws that would stiffen the penalties for kidnapping and other related offences,’’ the CD said. The group gave the South-east governors’ forum till the end of October 2012 to address the up- surge in kidnapping and restore the confidence of foreign investors to the zone. Contacted, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, described CD’s figures as a figment of their imagination. He said that the police was the statutory authority to issue the number of persons kidnapped in an area. He, however, raised some questions over the CD’s statement: “What is the source of their information? What is the methodology of obtaining the figures? Do the CD work with the kidnappers or did the kidnappers render account to them?’’ “Not until they verify from the police, the figures and the amount they gave make no sense,’’ Mba said. (NAN) |
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - The Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram denied on Monday that 20 of its fighters had been killed in a raid by security forces in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri the day before, saying all those killed were civilians. A security officer said a mixed military and police force, tipped off about a Boko Haram meeting on Sunday, had been fired on when they approached the site and killed 20 "terrorists" for the loss of one soldier in the ensuing shootout. The Islamist group, modelled on the Taliban, is fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria, whose 160 million people are split evenly between Christians and Muslims. Boko Haram spokesman Abu Qaqa told a teleconference for journalists in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state and the sect's heartland, that his fighters had not been meeting at the place where the military said it killed them. "They only succeeded in killing civilians," Qaqa said. "Twenty of us cannot risk sitting in a volatile place to hold a meeting ... It is not possible." The Islamists have killed hundreds in gun and bomb attacks in Nigeria, Africa's top energy producer, since they launched an uprising in 2009. The violence has centred on Maiduguri and other parts of the predominantly Muslim north, but has spread across central Nigeria in the past year. Many important figures in the sect have been killed or arrested in a military crackdown that appears to have weakened it since the beginning of the year. But many civilians have also died or been beaten and harassed in the crackdown, fuelling resentment that helps generate support for the movement. The United States is urging Nigeria not to use excessive or indiscriminate force in the north, an aide who went to Nigeria with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week said. The death of Boko Haram's leader in police custody in 2009 was seen as the event that transformed it from a rebellious clerical movement into a dangerous militant group. |
The British government has threatened to invade the Embassy of Ecuador in London and arrest WikiLeaders founder Julian Assange, who is seeking political asylum there. The dramatic development came two months after Assange suddenly walked into the embassy in a bid to avoid being extradited to Sweden where he faces allegations of sexual assault. Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ricardo Patino, released details of a letter he said was delivered through a British embassy official in Quito, and said that the Ecuadorian government would announce on Thursday whether it would give Assange asylum, telegraph.co.uk reports. The letter said, “You need to be aware that there is a legal base in the UK, the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987, that would allow us to take actions in order to arrest Mr Assange in the current premises of the Embassy. “We sincerely hope that we do not reach that point, but if you are not capable of resolving this matter of Mr Assange’s presence in your premises, this is an open option for us.” Patino said, “Today we received from the United Kingdom an express threat, in writing, that they might storm our embassy in London if we don’t hand over Julian Assange” He said the letter was “improper of a democratic, civilized and rule abiding country. “If the measure announced in the British official communication is enacted, it will be interpreted by Ecuador as an unacceptable, unfriendly and hostile act and as an attempt against our sovereignty. It would force us to respond,” he said. “We are not a British colony. A spokeswoman for the Foreign office said Britain remained “determined” to extradite Assange to Sweden. “We have an obligation to extradite Mr Assange and it is only right that we give Ecuador the full picture. “Throughout this process we have drawn the Ecuadorians’ attention to relevant provisions of our law, whether, for example, the extensive human rights safeguards in our extradition procedures, or the legal status of diplomatic premises in the UK. “The UK has a legal obligation to extradite Mr Assange to Sweden to face questioning over allegations of sexual offences and we remain determined to fulfil this obligation. “We are still committed to reaching a mutually acceptable solution,” she said |
The Northern States Governors Forum recently set up a committee to look into the state of insecurity in the region. The move considered belated in some quarters, is the first overt move by the northern governors to stem the crisis that has turned the region into a theatre of war. THE decision of the governors of the 19 northern states to set up a 41-man committee to address the spate of bombings and other terrorist actions in the region came out of the blue. For long the governors had kept mute on the issue with many of them skirting around calls for decisiveness from the populace. Their silence and that of other notable northern leaders at one point forced the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, to chide them over what he insinuated was either cowardice or cringing fear. Speaking during an Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, summit in January, Senator Mark berated Northern leaders over their inability to condemn terrorism in the region. He had fumed: “Won’t we be able to condemn current degree of insecurity in the North occasioned and heightened by Boko Haram? Are we afraid to openly condemn Boko Haram either for political reasons or out of fear of possible attack by the sect? ” Despite this challenge by Mark and several others, nothing much came from the northern leaders and governors except, calls now and then, for dialogue with the sect by a few northern radicals such as Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Alhaji Ali Monguno, Shehu Sani and the Arewa Consultative among others. The 41-man rescue squad: The seeming quietness inevitably sent signals of acceptance of the actions of the Boko Haram group by the northern leaders. Even when northerners and Muslims were the subject of the attack as it happened in Kano last January, not much expression of revulsion was expressed. It was as such not surprising that some alleged that Boko Haram had become a tool by the north’s elite to negotiate power ahead of the 2015 general elections. An accident involving a train and a danfo bus occurred, yesterday, at the Ajayi Farm railway crossing in Ikeja, Lagos, injuring four persons, among them, a pregnant woman. Unconfirmed report said one person died during the stampede. The incident happened barely two days after a similar one also involving a commercial bus occurred at the same spot, where several persons reportedly sustained injuries. An eye-witnesses account said yesterday’s incident occurred about 7a.m. with the train colliding with the vehicle with number-plate XF 899 FGG which was driving towards Ikeja. The impact of the collision flung the vehicle with its four passengers – a pregnant woman and three men – to the front of The Christian Dominion Ministry building at 26 Adegbola Street, Anifowoshe. The pregnant woman, according to eye-witnesses, was bleeding as at the time she was taken to the hospital alongside other passengers, where doctors were said to be battling to save their lives. When Vanguard arrived the scene, the affected vehicle which had its windscreen shattered, was dripped with blood stains inside. It was glaring that the train hit the vehicle from the driver’s side. The incident caused a stampede as everyone fled for dear life. But the train did not stop. Officials of the Railway Service were sighted at the scene. Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Mr. Gbenro Bangbe, blamed the drivers of the train and vehicle, saying: “The bus driver was not patient enough to let the train pass while the train driver did not hoot his horn to alert vehicles that might be driving through the railway.” Vanguard gathered that a similar incident occurred Monday on same spot, after a train collided with a commercial bus, where several persons reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries. “On that day, the bus was dragged all the way to the bridge by the train. A lot of people sustained injuries and were rushed to the Ikeja general hospital. It is the same driver that drove the train on Monday that also drove today. He does not hoot the horn like other drivers do”, an eye witness said. Meanwhile, commercial motorcyclists plying the route have called on the state government to device measures aimed at preventing a re-occurrence.An accident involving a train and a danfo bus occurred, yesterday, at the Ajayi Farm railway crossing in Ikeja, Lagos, injuring four persons, among them, a pregnant woman. JOS—Another bloody attack was, yesterday, averted in Kwakwi village of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where similar attacks claimed the lives of two prominent lawmakers and hundreds of other residents in the council last month. The would-be assailants, eyewitnesses claimed, were armed Fulani herdsmen, who were dressed in black attires. The village’s vigilante group, with the help of Police, gave them a hot chase and one of the suspected raiders was apprehended. State Police Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Ayeni, told newsmen that a suspect was arrested in collaboration with vigilante group at 2am, with AK-47 rifle and 28 rounds of ammunition, while attempting to raid the village. Ayeni said: “A gang of criminals invaded Kwakwi village in Riyom council and the youths mobilised and prevented them from carrying out their devilish act. “A phone call was made to the Riyom Divisional Police and a patrol team with the youths swung into action and were able to capture the suspect with his AK-47 riffle.” Ayeni confirmed that no one was killed in the incident and appealed to citizens to remain alert and give credible information to the Police to help fight crime in the state. |
ON Thursday, August 2, 2012, the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, signed the Lagos Road Traffic Bill into law. He said it was in a bid to ensure safety and orderly flow of traffic in the state. He reeled out statistics to illustrate the alarming rise in accident rates resulting in injuries and death. The new law spells out the offences and punishments attached. For instance, trailers (apart from fuel tankers and long buses) are now prohibited from plying the roads between 6.00 a.m. and 9.00 p.m. Commercial motorcycle operators are not to ply major trunks, such as Ikorodu Road, Funsho Williams Avenue, Apapa- Oshodi Express, Lagos-Badagry and Lekki-Epe Express. Motorists are also forbidden to make phone calls, eat, count money or engage in “other dangerous activities,” while on the wheel. Pedestrians are forbidden to cross the expressways. They are now to compulsorily use the pedestrian bridges. Violation of these laws attracts between N30,000 and N50,000 fines or imprisonment up to three years. Predictably, many commentators have criticised the law as being “draconian.” We share the reservations of those, who feel that sending a traffic offender to three years in prison is way over the roof. But at the same time, we believe any citizen, who is willing to obey the laws of the land will have nothing to fear. Only those bent on maintaining the “jungle city” reputation of Lagos have cause to worry. But those who, like the state government, believe that the rise of Lagos to a mega city status calls for more discipline and adherence to safety standards will welcome the measures as we do. The real problem, however, is whether the state government has the capacity to implement this law. Does it have the disciplined personnel to instil discipline on erring members of the public? Fears are being expressed that the track record of law enforcement agencies like the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have not been enviable. Laws like the ban on commercial motorcycles use of the highways and the wearing of crash helmet failed due to poor implementation. Secondly, rotten eggs in LASTMA capitalise on these laws to victimise citizens through corrupt entrapment tactics for selfish profit. LASTMA officials permit drivers of their own vehicles to violate the law, and military and police officers harass officials bent on implementing the law. What new safeguards has the state government come up with to ensure that this new law works? Massive public enlightenment must be mounted on all media, and government alone should not be left to do it. The law is in our collective interest. Let us give it a chance. |
