calculusx: depending on the root and herb, they all have their specific functions and work wonders if only you patronize those who really know much about it. Take a walk down to any major market {awolowo market in mushin or isolo road} where they sell these roots and herbs in large quantities and you will be amazed with what you will see. They perform wonders but many people have abused the use of roots and herbs because of their ignorance. Most of those hawking it on the street doesn't really know much about it.Very well said expecially the over 100 yrs mushin market |

NOBEL laureate, Professor Wale Soyinka has described the brutal murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt as the height of man inhumanity to man. Soyinka who spoke, Thursday, in Port Harcourt at the public presentation of Port Harcourt as UNESCO World Book capital for 2014 said it was so painful watching the video clips of how the students were butchered to death. University of Port Harcourt students brutally beaten and burnt alive Another worrisome thing according to him, was that the killing took place before silent spectators and passive participants in the community. Continuing, he said the sad incident was another indication that there was war between the forces of darkness and light in the country. Adding, he said Boko Haram and other allied movements that wage war against civility and enlightenment were fighting against humanity. The literary icon warned the country not to succumb to these forces of evil. While congratulating Port Harcourt for hosting the world book capital for 2014 he said the development had brought honour to the nation and Africa in general. “I believe quite frankly this country is at war, the war is between the forces of darkness and the forces of light. The forces of intellect, the forces of rationality and the forces of atavism retrograde thinking, the forces of hatred against humanism. “I believe that if we surrender to these banal forces in our society we cease to be human beings because we succumb completely to fear and it is the same message we must take to those in this nation, who believe that books are wrong. I don’t care whether they call themselves the final defenders of the pure road and the ultimate salvation or call themselves Boko Haram. “Boko Haram and all organisations, all movements that wage war against books, against literacy, against education, enlightenment in any form have declared war, not on the state, but on humanity itself and in spite of such setbacks, in spite of such horrors we have the responsibility to support and to sustain efforts such as being made by Rainbow Club and allied societies and organisations. “This recognition indicates very clearly that something, at least, is going right in Nigeria despite the avalanche of negativities.” he said. |

Also reacting to the development, Rivers State chapter of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, called for the sack of Prof. Joseph Ajienka, Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, for displacing the institution’s Acting Head of Department (HOD), Philosophy, Dr. Andrew Efemini, for his involvement in a students’ protest following the killings in Aluu. The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jerry Needam, described the action of the VC as “irrational, unlawful, condemnable and provocative.” UNIPORT’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr. William Wodi, who confirmed the HOD’s removal, however, described the ACN’s statement as baseless, claiming that the action followed due process in a decision reached at an emergency session of the university’s Senate. |

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has ordered the closure of all satellite campuses of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu across the state. This, Fashola said, was in consonance with the directive of the National Board for Technical Education, the supervisory agency for all polytechnics and monotechnics in the country. Fashola said this during the inauguration of the first phase of LASPOTECH College of Technology Complex on Thursday. The governor was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Oluranti Adebule at the occasion. He added that the decision was also aimed at enhancing quality and sound delivery of technical and vocational education in the state. But as the announcement was made, most workers including lecturers of the polytechnic protested in hushed tones. They told our correspondent that the decision would affect the fortunes of the institution as a large percentage of the institution’s internally generated revenue was derived from the banned campuses. “It is going to affect all of us. Some of us get extra pay for working at the satellite campuses, the polytechnic get a large percentage of its IGR from the programmes while a lot of Nigerians who love higher education but could not get it through the conventional institutions would also be denied of the opportunity offer by the campuses,” the anonymous lecturer said. He added that what would make it more difficult for the polytechnic was that the state government would not increase allocation to the polytechnic. The LASPOTECH Rector, Dr. Abdulazeez Lawal, though expressed similar view, he added that the decision would not affect the college in any negative way. “It’s a well thought out decision. But let me say that the policy is not a state government policy, it is from the NBTE. What the state government is doing is just to say, we are for quality education delivery. We will support it. It’s going to bring the creativity in us and we will ensure that our IGR is not affected negatively as a result of this,” he said. When asked whether the state government would increase funding to the polytechnic as a result of the action, Adebule was non-committal. She just said the state government had shown enough commitment to the development of education and it would not stop its efforts to uplift education at all levels in the state. Earlier, Adebule had commended the governing council of the polytechnic led by Prof. Simeon Ajose for their efforts to reposition the institution. She explained that the first phase of the complex would serve as lecture rooms for students and offices for members of staff. |
A commercial motorcycle rider, also known as okada rider in Bekwara, Cross River State, southsouth Nigeria, identified as Ifeanyi alias Koboko, played the devil's role when he kidnapped a nurse, Mrs Helen Ilonge and she was killed for ritual. P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that Helen, who headed the Public Health Unit in the Bekwara local government council, was taken to ritualists who beheaded her for rituals after her relatives had paid a ransom. Ifeanyi, whose father is Igbo and mother from Ogoja, in Cross River, was allegedly paid N10,000 by the ritualists to bring the victim for them. Ifeanyi allegedly abducted the 51-year old woman at Okpogrinya Junction along the Ogoja -Calabar highway. He reportedly took the nurse, who was returning from Assemblies of God programme in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, to Ukpe, a village along the Ogoja-Ikom highway where she was beheaded and later cut into pieces for money making ritual. The victim's neighbour, Mrs Theresa Idagwu, told P.M.NEWS yesterday that "she called her daughter, Victoria Agah, at about 9 p.m. on the fateful day and told her that she was at Okpogrinya junction and that she is taking a commercial motorcycle to Ogoja and when she gets to Ogoja she would call again so that she can boil water for her because she was catching cold following the rain which was falling all day. That was the last call." According to Mrs Idagwu, the deceased neighbour at Abuochiche estate where the nurse had an apartment, the phone remained silent until the next day when a call came through from the kidnappers demanding for a ransom of N50,000 naira which should be sent through MTN and Glo recharge cards. "And since she could not raise the money for the recharge cards, she rushed to the Bekwara council headquarters where the Head of Administration, Mr Bisong Bogbo and the chairman of council, Mr Linus Edeh, provided the money and sent it to the kidnappers. "Initially, they said they were at Ishi Eke near Abakaliki. The voice claimed that he needed the recharge so he could sell and run away from his master who is a ritualist whom he has been serving for a long time and was tired. He said once he gets the cards they will release the woman," she added. Tears streamed down Mrs Idagwu's cheeks while narrating the tragic incident. According to Mr Bogbo, "the cards were sent to the kidnappers by the daughter to the victim online and he said he will confirm and immediately after that the phone went dead. But later we heard that the woman was cut into pieces. "It was through a tracking device that the place was located and it was in Abuochiche and some people confirmed that Ifeanyi was selling the MTN and Glo recharge cards there. And when the police swooped on him, they discovered that it was those cards sent to them that he was selling." At the council headquarters, the victim's colleague, Mr Gabriel Emeka Ogar, said she is probably the kindest woman she has worked with. "I have worked with five coordinators but I know that she is the best so far," Ogar said. According to him, the lady had worked to the satisfaction of the governor and now she has been killed, leaving her five children without a helper. "Her husband died five years ago and since then she has been the one taking care of the children. Only one has graduated. Please let the government do something for those poor children," he added. The Cross River State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP John Umoh, said the matter is under investigation and four suspects, including Ifeanyi, are in their custody in Calabar. He said the Homicide Unit is handling the investigation and when that is completed they shall be taken to court. "We have taken confessional statements from them. They claim the dismembered body was buried in a swamp. We shall exhume the body for autopsy," Umoh said. Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in Obanlikwu, her local government of origin as youths have for three days running been blocking the road leading to the Obudu Ranch Resort asking that justice must be done. |
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to curtail the excesses of his predecessor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by repealing the Lagos State pension law signed at the twilight of Tinubu's administration in 2007. Chieftain of the party, Dr Degbola Dominic who addressed newsmen at the party’s Ikeja GRA secretariat in Lagos, said it has become pertinent for Fashola to stop forthwith, the contract of AlphaBeta Consulting Ltd (ABC, the company allegedly owned by Tinubu, which has been responsible for tax collection in the state. "We do not need an AlphaBeta to collect taxes in Lagos State, certainly not at a cost to the tax payers of N6 billion a month. Honestly, to save Lagos State, Fashola should resign immediately or step aside for somebody else who can dare his godfather. Obviously, this job is beyond Fashola, and it is dangerous to wait until 2015. It might be too late then to salvage anything and the damage could be irreversible. Fashola must stop his rampaging godfather now or get out," he said. Dominic who was the Lagos State gubernatorial candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) said the former governor, with his excesses, is holding the state by the jugular and except something drastic is done, it may run into bankruptcy soon. His words: "Shortly before he left office in 2011, Bola Tinubu signed a mindless pensions law which gives a former governor a pension salary that is same as that of the sitting governor. In addition, he gets 300 percent of this amount as (furniture allowance, two houses (one in Abuja and the other in Lagos) at locations of the former governor's choice, three replaceable new cars, and an almost endless list of aides and allowances. Remarkably, the Lagos State pensions law started with Bola Tinubu while all other former governors are excluded from the package, " the party chieftain said. He urged Fashola to repeal the law and as a matter of urgency ask his predecessor to return to the state everything he may have benefited from the obnoxious law. |

The House of Representatives ad-hoc committee is to investigate the transaction between Zenon Oil and Gas Limited, Forte Oil PLC and the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), over an alleged repayment of the outstanding debt of over N140 billion by the companies. This followed a motion presented by Honourable Abimbola Daramola who said that the debt repayment transaction was doubtful, and pointed to the need to investigate the matter and other operations of AMCON. The two firms, owned by businessman and oil mogul, Femi Otedola were reported to have paid up the controversial debt, but the House said the secrecy surrounding the alleged repayment had raised a lot of concern. An eight-man ad-hoc committee headed by the Minority Leader of the house, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila is to investigate the matter and report back in one month. |
