ChicFashion: Go to Birmingham instead, its a shorter travel time to Cardiff. You can book a coach from Birmingham airport to Cardiff, about 2 hours.
London is closer to Cardiff than Birmingham, this is a route I travel frequently. |

All I can say is, if I am truly willing to help, I would respond to that question differently. TheGuyFromHR: Thank you for your proportionate response. It's refreshing, to say the least. I have quoted the post in question below.
"There was an extensive discussion of this some months back on this thread involving people who are actually living in the UK now, if I remember clearly. Go back and read it. I think someone even cited a decided court case in favour of their standpoint."
Could you tell me how this post is in any way rude? I would characterise it as straightforward and to-the-point. And reading stuff like this is what I do. As you say you currently live and work in the white man's world, would you really feel offended if a colleague or co-worker sent you a message in this vein?
If all the people whose reports and letters and windy stuff I have to read ("how was your night?", "Happy new month, sir) wrote in this manner, going directly to the point, I would be a much happier man. |

Hello TheGuyFromHR, Thank you for taking your time to share this piece. Well, I would start by saying I was in many people's on this forum shoes years ago, which I did my application by simply reading the Tier 4 guidance published on GOV.UK and I didn't ask anybody a damn question and I went on to secure a 5 years work-permit just two months after graduating from The University of East Anglia, as well as two of my friends. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which is affecting everyone globally, I have been working from home since march and I can tell you I have read this thread from page 1 to the current page and I can confirm your concerns about some people's inability to carry out simple research, as well as some people's rude responses. Prospective Tier 4 students needs to know most of their coursework would be research-based and they need to cultivate the habit of carrying out simple research to find solutions to problem before coming to ask questions for clarity. so it is wrong for you to think I don't have an understanding of what this forum is all about, I can't recall for once when Mimilyrics and Justwise had to be rude with their responses and I appreciate the contribution of everyone on this forum to ensure a successful application process for everyone. my comment was not meant to condemn anyone but for us to be more respectful, sensitive and be mindful of the way we respond and make people feel. TheGuyFromHR: Lol. Here they come again. I usually avoid the controversies here, since I just came to get some specific information when we were making our application, but when someone asks a question that has been dealt with and is asked to refer back to that discussion, just what is wrong with that?
Rule 14 of the Nairaland rules, rephrased, advises people to search the forum before starting a new post (or, for our purposes, asking a question). I have always found strange and mystifying the reluctance of the average Nigerian to apply themselves and do some reading.
As an aside, when you mistakenly mention emotional intelligence, considering that the people on this forum asking questions are about to or have invested millions of naira into acquiring an education, is advising them to be familiar with the basics of research in the internet age out-of-place?
Ultimately, we see people who are looking to be spoonfed in their hundreds when they apply to us. FYI, when they say the average Nigerian graduate is unemployable, statements like this one simply re-inforce the stereotype. Those in the UK should let us know if the white man is ready to spoonfeed them when it comes to job searches or if they are not ensuring they are up to standard in all aspects given that they are competing in a serious job market.
As an aside, I read this forum through in its entirety for its informational value, and simply by reading his posts, the excellent English in which they are phrased and so forth, one can tell that the gentleman you cited is obviously a well-educated and a well-exposed person, whom I have noted never involves himself in controversies or comments on things of which he has no knowledge. He's one of those whose posts I read carefully and with interest, along with mimilyrics, dduchess, justwise, mattfeuter, occasionally the repentant Skymoore and a couple of others.
Look for someone else to trouble. |

Noted, Thanks for the advice! I guess you will all learn all along. Cheers! Aprokodaughter: Jumping into people's discussion is actually disrespectful as well as jumping into conclusion when the topic doesn't concern you is disrespectful.
Learn how to pass your message without been disrespectful and rude towards people's discussion.
Sometimes its good to comprehend a statement before responding to a comment. |

Like I said, if you can't respect people and answer their questions politely without being rude, then you don't have to respond. Being polite and respectful doesn't make you any less of a man or woman. Goodluck with your application and future endeavours. kaylov12: What's impolite about telling people to read up on first hand , detailed experiences?. He even explained how to search for discuss topics. I still won't be able to understand your goad. |

Hey Cyberknight, I think you can actually be more constructive and polite when replying people and if you don't have answers for their questions, kindly ignore!!! If you are coming to the UK to study and live here hopefully, you need to develop your emotional intelligence. Cyberknight: There was an extensive discussion of this some months back on this thread involving people who are actually living in the UK now, if I remember clearly.
Go back and read it. I think someone even cited a decided court case in favour of their standpoint. |

Great insight and thank you for the write up! I can tell you currently work in the UK and you have an understanding of how the system works and going by statistics over the years, you can tell the % of international students that were able to secure a Tier 2 visa and the Uni they attended. Those bosses of yours are either British/EU or people with indefinite leave to remain, I had an interview long time ago and the hiring manager said to me I never went to Uni but I'm sure you learnt about fixed income in Uni, so I fully understand what you are saying. But our focus is on students from Nigeria, with a student visa and possibly PGW, to give yourself the best chance you really need to stand tall in all areas for a company to think they are willing to sponsor and going to a top school is one of those areas. Since you work in a multinational company, it would be nice to tell everyone on this platform, how many international students you company has hired and sponsored since you joined them? Oloshi83: Thank you for that last bit. I was about to come at you with all guns blazing.
Private equity is one small bit of one industry. I know people in investment banking that started their careers in Lagos after Uni in Naija. One worked in Zenith Bank for years and said ‘let me just try‘ and got in. Whilst graduating from a Russell Group Uni can help, it is not the be all and end all. I also know people that went to said Unis and aren’t really doing anything impressive so as people have said here what you have to offer - for the most part - is a helluva lot more important. I work for a multinational (as Naija people like to say) and a number of Directors no even go Uni. My director went to South Bank Uni and with my Russell Group Uni and all, no directorship in the offing. My point is that in IT and Engineering type roles, the no Uni at all thing is very common and there is still money in the bank. Is that not what we are all after? How many people here are doing finance related courses sef?
It’s the same argument people make for private and state schools. You can say whatever you want but in terms of numbers, there are fewer private schools so most of the populace go to state schools. Same argument for non Russell group Unis.
For most people here, the reason why you see Salford and Teesside a lot is financial. I had a look at my Uni for my cousin and the price difference from Westminster (where he is heading to) is about £15k. Until we all join the top 1% of the 1% that have mostly chopped Naija’s money, that is just not feasible for most people.
Its not false hope. It’s called being realistic!
Rant over. |

You are wrong sir and stop giving people false hope, I work in Private Equity in London and not a single soul in my company went to a Uni that's not a Russell Group, if anybody is in doubt, go on LinkedIn and search for any investment bank, asset management or private equity company and check the profile of the people that work there, then you would be able to answer yourself all the questions you have if you uni matters or not, and this applies to local students as well. LinkedIn is an important tool where you can see what kind of company and industry the alumni of your intended Uni are currently working, and yes someone from LSE, Imperial college, Oxbridge, Edinburgh and the likes will tell a different story to someone that's going to Chester, Teeside, East London, Salford, BCU and the list goes on. But then again, it is not impossible, students with degrees from less prestigious universities with substantial amount of work experience from leading financial institutions also do get a shot 100% but you still need a work permit. My advice for anyone looking to switch to Tier 2 visa from Tier 4 would be to start applying early from this October for graduate trainee programmes and focus your attention on multinational companies like, EY, PWC, JP Morgan. But if I were to be in this position, I wouldn't rely on the possibility of switching into Tier 2, as I would be exploring others means. Mr Mogatti, if you currently live and work in the UK you would understand better and the chances of getting a company to sponsor your Tier 2 visa regardless of your experience. P.S. This information applies to a specific industry and does not reflect the overall recruitment process and preference for all industry/sector in the UK. mogatti: My friend, uni you attend in the UK has got nothing to do with getting a job. What you know and can bring to the table is what determines if you get a job. Employers are after what you have to offer not what degrees or uni you attended. |

Skymoore1004: Getting a job solely relies on your work experience, employability skills and other factors. If you’re not going to a university within the likes of Oxford region, or Queen Mary region, I wouldn’t say your school will really matters but others may argue differently. you are right at skymoore1004, if you don't go to all those top schools and without significant and relevant work experience, all you can rely on is luck and your drive to develop your skills, regarding most schools Nigerians on this platform choose to attend in the UK, these schools won't give you any advantage whatsoever in the job market but give you the opportunity to apply for the post-study visa. |

Firstlady00: Yeah I get your point I really appreciate and please hope I can work after graduating from these schools @Firstlady00, yes you can but any of these schools won't give you the best shot if you want to work in Finance for example but in the health sector, they are fine and another way to get around recruitment hurdles in the UK is if you have solid work experience from Nigeria already. Bear in mind if you will still need to find an employer that would sponsor you after your post-study visa elapse to remain in the UK. |

babajeje123: How good is Edgehill? , if you check the UK universities ranking, you will see that Edge Hill University is down there, and as an international student hoping to work in the UK after graduation, you want to go to a school that would increase your chances of getting a job and give you a bit of competitive advantage over local students. The job market is highly competitive and top employers are keen on students from Top 20/30 universities. please do your research and make informed decisions that would help you on the long term. Cheers! |
