The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Usen Effiong, for posing as a medical doctor and consulting for the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for more than two months. The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said Effiong, an indigene of Ukot Usung Itam, in Itu Local Government Area was caught based on intelligence report from the UUTH. He said, "The police arrested Effiong in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital impersonating a medical doctor. "The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State branch, Dr. John Udobang denied ever knowing the young man. He is not a member of the association." He said the police had investigated Effiong and found out that he was actually impersonating a medical doctor, adding that the law would take its course. Udobang told PUNCH Metro that he received a call from the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, UUTH, Dr. Sunday Udo on the activities of Effiong. He said, "Udo told me that they caught someone who has not finished secondary school parading himself as a consultant in the teaching hospital as a medical doctor." Udobang explained that he went to the teaching hospital where he interviewed the suspect and found him with stethoscope and sphygmomanometer (blood pressure apparatus). He said, "We also found some prescriptions and forms that he wanted to fill to become a member of the association of resident doctors" "Later, when they went to look for him, he was found in the doctor's consulting room eating. "He has confessed that he is not a doctor, and has not finished his school certificate, and has been coming there to consult in the last two months." Asked how it was possible for an SS II dropout to be consulting in a teaching hospital, Udobang replied that people used to see him but did not know his intention. He said, "The Dean whose table he was sitting on used to see him and thought he was a medical student or a newly employed doctor that he has not known. "It was after one of the younger doctors saw him and asked the Dean who he was that they started investigating him." mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/secondary-school-dropout-consults-for-teaching-hospital/ |
Why I Won’t Seek A Second Term – Sanusi Wed, 27/03/2013 - 6:57am | NSE ANTHONY-UKO The governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has said that he does not plan to vie for a second term as governor of the CBN because the job he set out to do is already largely done. Sanusi said that he had intimated President Goodluck Jonathan way back in 2011 that he would not be interested in seeking second term in office on the expiration of the present tenure in June 2014. “I informed the president going back to 2011 that I would not be interested in serving for two terms,” Sanusi told Bloomberg adding that ``the job has been done, largely’’. The apex bank governor who re- echoed his stance on second term in a chat with Bloomberg on March 24, 2013 in Lagos, stated categorically that he would not seek renewal of tenure as he considers a single term enough to make a lasting positive impact in the financial system and the economy in general. Sanusi also said that he supported keeping monetary policy rate (MPR) which serves as the benchmark interest rate on hold at 12 per cent to contain inflation in Africa’s top- oil producing nation as policy makers increasingly opt for a cut. “My own inclination is to just hold and just continue doing what we’re doing, because it has worked very well. But I’m only one vote in the monetary policy committee. The votes to ease are beginning to increase,” Sanusi said. Sanusi, who leads the 12-member MPC, left the key rate unchanged at a record 12 per cent for a ninth meeting last week to help bolster the naira and keep inflation under 10 per cent. Three members voted for a reduction, up from two in January, to support the economy. Policy makers have so far rejected calls from businesses and the government to lower borrowing costs. “But I’m only one vote in the monetary policy committee and as you can see, the votes to ease are beginning to increase.” The CBN governor further cautioned on the quest for low interest rate saying “the impact of interest rates below inflation could be horrendous for economic stability, so in the short term the country has to live with high rates.” Economic growth slowed to 6.6 percent in 2012 from 7.4 percent a year earlier, hurt by a contraction in the oil industry, Sanusi said, citing the National Bureau of Statistics. The economy will probably expand 6.8 percent this year, according to the bureau. Inflation may slow to below 9 percent in March and will probably remain between 9 and 11 percent this year, Sanusi said. “Our own forecasts don’t show us getting back to the kind of 12 percent to 13 percent levels we saw last year,” he said. “Inflation is where we’d like it to be.” The central bank manages the naira to help keep inflation under control. It sells foreign currency at auctions on Mondays and Wednesdays to keep the naira within a band of 3 percent above or below N155 per dollar. “Unless there’s some major external shock, the foreign- currency market looks to me one in which we can have stability,” Sanusi said. The bank has enough reserves to defend the naira and “keep it where we want,” he said. The House of Representatives passed a resolution on February 20 ordering its committee on banking and currency to request the central bank to lower its policy rate to below 10 percent to encourage borrowing and investment. Finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said in July that record high interest rates pushed up commercial bank rates to about 20 percent and were making it difficult for businesses to borrow. “Who knows?” Sanusi said. “Maybe the next MPC there might be four or five, and so my own deputy governors might vote against me as they’ve done before.” leadership.ng/nga/articles/50996/2013/03/27/why_i_wont_seek_second_term_sanusi.html |
Anenih, Others Beg Lamido To Rescue PDP From Collapse Tue, 26/03/2013 - 2:36am | SURAJO MUHAMMAD The chairman, Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Tony Anenih has urged Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State to use his connection and political experience to rescue the party which is facing its most difficult period from collapse. He said people like Governor Lamido had vital role to play in tackling the challenges militating against the party and begged him to come on board to achieve the desired goals. “You are an important stakeholder, and you have moral responsibility not to allow the party to lose its glory in this critical period,” he said. The BoT chairman made the plea yesterday during a courtesy visit to the governor at the Jigawa State Government House. Chief Anenih who was accompanied by top members of the PDP said they were in the state as part of their nation wide tour to find a lasting solution to the crisis bedeviling the party. “The challenges we have now in the party made me feel that I needed you more than ever”, declared Anenih. He said contrary to a publication in one of the national dailies that Lamido had been hobnobbing with the opposition parties, “I know the Sule I know would not do so even on the face of the firing squad, he is a person that I know that stays where he has the conviction that it is the right place to be.” Anenih assured Sule Lamido that even as his support is paramount at this crucial time, “we do not use people and dump them.” In his remarks, Governor Sule Lamido said, PDP was the only political party with the capacity to maintain the existence of Nigeria as a single entity, therefore they cannot take the risk of allowing the country to be in the hands of the smaller political parties. Others in Chief Tony Anenih’s entourage include the secretary BoT, Senator Wali Jibrin, Barnabas Gemade, Ahmadu Ali, Senator Ken Nnamani, Hassan Halliru, Chief Ebenezer Babatope and Air Vice Marshal Larry Konya. http://leadership.ng/nga/articles/50879/2013/03/26/anenih_others_beg_lamido_rescue_pdp_collapse.html |
