Renowned dietician and nutritionist, Dr Charles Oguikpe, has warned Nigerians to be weary of the oil they patronize, as most of them are hazardous.

According to him, the higher the cholesterol, the higher the level of heart and blood vessel disease, adding that there were no signs and symptoms of high cholesterol unless a blood cholesterol test is taken.

The appeal was made in Lagos recently, during a health sensitization program organized by Laser oil Nigeria.

According to Oguikpe, a research conducted by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Federal University of Agriculture, Ogun State, stated that there was a high cholesterol concentration (mg/100g) in fast food samples of selected outlets.

He noted that a deep fried snack was seen to have a high cholesterol level, which is believed to likely be a function of the type of fat and oil used in the preparation and frying of the product.

His words, “So many Nigerians go around with a high cholesterol level without being in the know, until it causes damage.



“However, if the concentration of cholesterol in the blood gets too high, it becomes a silent danger that puts people at risk of heart attack. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, a cause of heart attacks. A build-up of cholesterol is part of the process that narrows arteries, in which plaques form and cause restriction of blood flow. Reduced blood flow can lead to a stroke of heart attack.

“There is no one single cause for high cholesterol, but top on the list is eating a diet that is high in saturated fat, often gotten from one of our major cooking ingredients, cooking oil.”

“Low density lipoprotein (LDL) is the unhealthy kind of cholesterol. LDL cholesterol can build up in your arteries and form fatty deposits called plaques

“However, cholesterol is not altogether bad. At moderate levels, it aids metabolism in the body. Cholesterol is found in every cell of the body and has important natural functions when it comes to digesting foods, producing hormones, and generating Vitamin D. It is manufactured by the body but can also be taken in from food.

According to the nutritionist, olive oil is one of the few foods which, improves cholesterol levels and heart health, he also went further to explain the benefits of Rapeseed oil and they are:

1. It is a good source of vitamin E
2. Has 10 times more omega 3 than olive oil
3. Contains the lowest saturated fat content of any soil
4. High in monounsaturated fats

Another speaker at the event, Dr.Salami also revealed that ways to reduce cholesterol in the body include:

1. Eat heart health foods
2. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids
3. Exercise on most days of the week
4. Quit smoking

He also went ahead to say that people with elevated cholesterol levels are at the risk of encountering heart disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease.

There was a sudden loss of power generation on Tuesday night, leading to a total blackout across the country.

According to a statement from the Ministry Of Power, Works and Housing, the power outage occurred following a reported fire incident on a gas pipeline in Edo State.

“Regrettably, after a sustained period of increasing production and distribution of power since September 2017 to date, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd (NGPTC) has reported a fire incident on its Escravos Lagos Pipeline System near Okada, Edo State on Tuesday, January 2, 2018,” the ministry said.

The incident consequently led to the shutdown of the pipeline supplying gas to Egbin 1,320MW; Olorunsogo NIPP 676MW, Olorunsogo 338MW, Omotosho NIPP 450MW, Omotosho 338 MW and Paras 60MW power stations.

The ministry further explained that the sudden loss of generation as a result of the interruption in gas supply from these stations caused the national transmission grid to “trip off around 20:20 on January 2, 2018.”

“The national transmission grid is owned and operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Most of Nigeria’s power generation is from thermal power stations that require gas for fuel.

“The gas is produced by oil and gas companies overseen by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. The gas is delivered to the power stations through pipelines owned and operated by Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd (NGPTC), a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC),” the statement added.

The ministry apologised to Nigerians for any difficulty they might have been through, saying TCN and the generation companies are working to restore operation of the national grid.

“We urge members of the public to bear with us as we work to overcome this set back which should be temporary.”

Once the national grid is restored, the ministry promised that output from the hydroelectric power stations and all other unaffected gas fired thermal power stations would be increased to the extent possible to minimise the impact of the loss of generation from the affected power stations while NNPC takes necessary steps to restore gas supply.

This year I will not be victim of disappointment but a successful appointment. Never will I labour and another person will reap my reward. Am looking forward to a successful 2018. Happy new year all.
