bsaying: Your Estonian visa allows you to stay up to 3months in every 6months in any Schengen member country. Estonia does everything possible to make sure nobody uses the country as an escape route to other European country. They are very strict about this. Now temporary resident permit is no longer issued for one calender year. It is now per academic year. But you can school and hustle at the same time in Estonia. |

bsaying: Kindly check University website and Dreamapply website to find tuition free courses. Every University in Estonia has the obligation to send the names of students who do not fulfill their academic responsibility to the Police and Border Guard. And the Police declares the resident permit issued to the student invalid. 1 Like |

I think the first set of students who apply for visa in Nigeria have the highest chances of success. So try and be among the first. My advice! |

xctvhz: You generally still need a sponsor but his bank account balance wouldn't matter much again. The visa is not guaranteed. You only got a scholarship (financial requirement for visa). There are still many other requirements you must meet for the visa. |

Scriptamanet: 1. Yes. Check Study in Estonia website to see the estimated monthly living expenses. Multiply that amount by 12 months. Try to have at least that amount in your account. 2. No. But you can work when you get there. 1 Like |

Udenzes: You need funding to get PhD admission. Not personal money. |

Udenzes: (Yes the law allows you to work and study. But you may not have the time to work. For life in Estonia I think Google will be helpful. Check also Study in Estonia website and Research in Estonia website. Also University of Tartu has info for international researchers and their families). All PhD in Estonia are without tuition fees. But other costs relating to the project such as lab, field work, workshop and conferences, article publication, health insurance and your living expenses need to be cared for. Hence the need for PhD funding. Supervisors in Estonia get PhD funding by way of competition. They write a research proposal and submit to the evaluation committee of their University for evaluation (Around March every year). If their project is selected then it will be funded by the government (it means the student who will carry out the project will be paid salary every month). Some Departments have around 2-4 funding slots each year. But usually these supervisors already have students whom they believe are qualified for the PhD project. For example their project students at M.Sc. level who are ready to take up a PhD. In fact the supervisor and the potential student sits down together to design and write the PhD project which they will submit to the evaluation committee. So those students MUST get that PhD position if they are qualified and applies. Usually they won't put such projects up on the website for the public to apply. But I have seen a project that already has a student to take it up being advertised on Dream Apply for admission (it may be an error anyway). On the other hand, there are also PhD projects with funding advertised without a candidate on hand (very rare I believe). For such projects thousands of people worldwide apply and the best candidate gets it. Some supervisors consult for companies or belong to some kind of research group that may have funding for PhD projects. So apart from state funded positions, some supervisors on their own have funding. You can also as a candidate search for funding that will cover your PhD in Estonia. For example PTDF or NDDC scholarship (just saying). If you get funding and find a supervisor (most likely) then you are in for a PhD. So it is BEST to find yourself a supervisor in Estonia well in advance if you intend to apply for admission. Then discuss with him your research interests. He can thereafter design a project for the both of you. If he happens to already have a project in mind but without any student for it, then you become the potential student for the project. Finding a supervisor FIRST is the surest way to a PhD. Remember PhD is a serious business. Supervisors want to be sure you can do the job. So be ready to show proof of your research competence. Prepare your motivation letter well. Include a list of relevant publications. Think what area you would like to specialize and pick a few professors who are specialist in those fields and contact them via e-mail. And NEVER spam them with e-mails. Do not copy and paste e-mails to all the professors in the Department. Those guys take coffee together a lot. They will discuss your matter one day and it will be a NO NO. I hope people will find this guide at least a little helpful. Goodluck. 1 Like |

Hi everyone, It is sad to read that some could not make it to Estonia. Hopefully next year would be another opportunity to try again. In the meantime you could think of many other options like applying to a local university, starting a trade or farming and learning a skill. We hope for next admission year to be stress free but we truly do not know how it will be. Do not put all your hope in Estonia. Goodluck everyone. 3 Likes |

Hi all, I totally understand how reluctant we feel to login to this forum to share information and answer questions when we already have been issued our visa. That makes you human! But before you say goodbye kindly share in details the step by step process you took to get your visa and admission. You may have posted all the steps in piece meal but it is difficult for a beginner to find all the information you posted over time. Just make a long post and that would be a better way to say goodbye. In a short time you will already not remember some details but your post will serve as your reference. Good luck all. 3 Likes 1 Share |
