PoliticsLagos Is Yoruba United States — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by Slytiger(op): 2:40pm On Oct 30, 2025
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said Lagos State, which he governs, is a Yoruba United States that continues to set the pace for Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu made the assertion while delivering a speech at the South-West Citizen–Government Engagement Summit in Akure on Wednesday.

The event was attended by leaders of the South-West political space, including governors, traditional rulers and businessmen.

The governor said, “I stand here not only as a humble leader among the South-West governors, but also as the governor of the largest population in our country, the economic and commercial nerve centre of our country, the state of aquatic splendour, a state that houses almost every tribe, religion and race of our country, but more importantly, a Yoruba United States, that continues to reimage and to set a pace for our country.”

In a post on his social media handles, Sanwo-Olu called on the South-West to once again lead Nigeria’s renewal, through unity, shared vision, and real collaboration across its states and communities.

He said with the new South-West Development Commission, championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supported by the National Assembly, “we now have a platform to plan and deliver the kind of regional progress that once defined the Western Region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo.”

He pointed out that under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria is regaining confidence and stability, emphasising that his reforms are working, the economy is growing, investment is returning, and the future is brighter.

“For us in Lagos, this progress opens new doors for projects like the 4th Mainland Bridge, the Green Line, and the Lekki International Airport. With stronger investor confidence, these initiatives will transform lives and strengthen our economy.

“The South-West can, and must, lead Nigeria’s rebirth. The spirit of innovation and courage that shaped our past still lives in us today and together, we will rise to this moment,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor’s submission was hailed by many on social media, who urged him to ensure the empowerment of Yoruba people in the state.

An X user, @AKakanfo, said, “Lagos State is the United States of the Yoruba race… Governor Babajide Sanwoolu @jidesanwoolu Sir, I have criticised you vigorously before, but I am impressed with your brilliant submission today. This is the kind of speech that will make Yoruba Nationalists go to battle to defend our leaders without collecting a dime. For months, I gave lectures about Lagos state as the modern empire of the Yoruba race that must be jealously protected.

God bless YORUBALAND. God bless Nigeria.”

@Balogun_Iyanda said, “@jidesanwoolu has not gotten my flowers yet, until he follows his words with actions by doing restitution and making policies that will empower the Yoruba people in Lagos within the few years remaining for him on the seat, Lagos is Yorubaland and must favour Yoruba people first.”

@Temmyman_ said, “We don’t ask anything from them than this, our politicians should just think Yoruba first. We Yorubas are not barbarians who cause insurgency everywhere. They should just put us first and defend our ethnic identity and have this native intelligence.”

BusinessBokku Mart Rises In Popularity As Cancel Culture Fails by Slytiger(op):
Bokku Mart has gained popularity after what would have become its downfall was transformed into a means of fame for the supermarket.

A video advert on its social media platform had generated controversy after people of Igbo ethnicity lamented that it contained an ethnic slur against them.

The video showed a social media influencer hyping the supermarket, saying the products they sell are very cheap and that 'omo Igbo' will not cheat her if she keeps shopping at Bokku Mart.

Despite apologies from the influencer and Bokku Mart, some Igbo social media users have been running a campaign to cancel the supermarket.

Unfortunately for them, a push back arrived from Yoruba people, who have chosen to defend the supermarket, because someone from their ethnicity owns it.

They have since been running a social media campaign promoting the supermarket, which has boosted the establishment's social media following and increased brand awareness.

An X user, @AKakanfo, said, "The Jews patronise Jewish stores, the Arabs patronise Arab stores, the Han Chinese patronise Han Chinese stores. Yoruba people must always patronise their own and defend the economic base of our fellow Yorubas. Bokku mart is the best in the world. Groupnomics is equal to powernomics.

@ollywithsweet said, "My groceries items from now will always be from @bokkumart. It is unbelievable to see quality items being sold at discounted prices. I didn't know much about them until now. When others take advantage of situations to milk their fellow, @bokkumart is there selling at subsidised."

@adetokunboajala said, "Yoruba people with over liberality will find it hard to understand this post. We are more than 50 million strong living in contiguous communities. The potential economic advantage in that is profound."

@VaikaBrothers said, "We have created too many space for this people to occupy. Most of this nonsense happens in areas developed by federal government. Our people must also be empowered to trade more and compete.'

@lagospidia said, "Since yesterday Omo Igbo wan cancel Bokku Mart, but their followers still dey increase. It's now obvious they don't have

purchasing power, just like they don't have political power."

@letsbuildnew9ja said, "@bokkumart and make sure you buy from them from now on, that's my new shopping spot and they don't sell fake products."

@PastorMarvy said, "Boycott Bokku Mart' but they have gained more than 2,000 new followers under 24 hours. 'Boycott Bokku Mart' but hundreds have already queued up for their renowned bread and cheap groceries. Imagine having the confidence of a Lion but the ability/impact of a house fly."

CrimeFather Arrested For Defiling Two Daughters In Enugu by Slytiger(op): 6:33pm On Oct 27, 2025
The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of one Ozioma Okonkwo for allegedly defiling his two biological daughters, aged two and five.

Okonkwo, who is a native of Imo State residing in Enugu, was arrested on the night of Saturday, October 25, 2025, after a concerned citizen alerted authorities about the disturbing incident
.

This was contained in a statement issued by the state Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development on Sunday.

According to the statement, the suspect is in police custody and will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

The ministry also revealed that the two children have been admitted into a government-approved shelter, where they are receiving medical care and psychosocial support.

Their mother, described as deeply traumatised, will also undergo therapy under the supervision of the ministry’s social welfare and counselling team.

“The Enugu State Government commends the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and professional response, which led to the prompt arrest of the suspect,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence, the ministry warned that all offenders would face the full weight of the law.

The ministry also condemned the act, calling it “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence.”

The statement reads, “The Enugu State Government under the leadership of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, remains unwavering in its commitment to protect every child and ensure that perpetrators of such evil acts are brought to justice.

“No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially from those meant to provide care and protection.”

The government also thanked citizens for their vigilance and cooperation, urging continued support in efforts to safeguard the rights and dignity of women and children across the state.

In 2022, a father, Michake Ogbar, was sentenced to triple life imprisonment for defiling and raping his three daughters of age 10, 20, and 24 years.

Ogbar faced three counts bordering on defilement and rape, offences which violate Sections 137 and 258(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

PoliticsOlanipekun Urges N’Assembly To Stop Constitution Amendment, Calls For Referendum by Slytiger(op): 5:03pm On Oct 22, 2025
A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Wole Olanipekun SAN, has urged the National Assembly to suspend further amendments to the 1999 Constitution.

The legal luminary said that the country required a new homegrown constitution that would genuinely reflect the collective will of Nigerians and their uniqueness, instead of another round of patchwork reform.

He said, “The National Assembly should, for the time being, stay action on the ongoing amendment or any further amendment to the 1999 Constitution.

“This constitution needs a new rebranding, a complete overhaul, a substitution altogether. It has to be a negotiated document that will pave the way for a new social order.

Olanipekun, who spoke on Monday while delivering the 13th Convocation Lecture of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, titled “Nigeria yesterday, today and tomorrow: Imperative of a sober and definitive recalibration,” also expressed concern about the lack of ideology among the country’s politicians and the wave of defections from one political party to other.

The senior advocate said, “To calibrate our democratic system, a note of caution should be sounded against the wave of cross-carpeting from one political party to the other, soon or later, inflict implosion and explosion of their host political parties.

“Membership of a political party should not be a tea party or picnic, but a serious business.

“There should be fidelity to policies, ideas, programmes, manifestos, philosophy, principles and ideology. That is what operates in stabilised democracies in the world.”

Olanipekun urged Nigerian politicians to take a cue from President Bola Tinubu, who remained in his party, refused to defect despite being in opposition for years and built the party to winning ways.

He said, “Aside from him (Tinubu) and a few tiny minority, most politicians in Nigeria have, since 1999, been migrating and shifting grounds along political parties and divided with ease and convenience, to be liberal with them.

“Even as a sole opposition governor, he challenged and withstood the onslaught of the then party in power at the centre, the Peoples Democratic Party, and has since remained within the phylum of what is styled ‘the progressives’ in Nigeria. Several others have done otherwise”.

Olanipekun, who said Nigeria must stop parading people but strive to produce citizens, lauded Tinubu for “reintroducing the old national anthem”, adding that to reconcile the differences in the tribe and tongue in the country, “we have to be deliberate, sober and reflective and take steps that will lead to a recalibration of our country”.

Speaking on the imperatives for a new constitution, Olanipekun said that the 1999 Constitution, which he described as a “military albatross” imposed on Nigerians, without consultation or consent, had outlived its usefulness and legitimacy.

According to him, the country’s foundational challenges stemmed from a faulty constitutional structure that concentrated power at the centre, emasculated the states, and perpetuated inequality in all its entirety.

The senior advocate said that he had, since the 1999 Constitution was midwifed and became operational under the General Abdulsalami Abubakar military regime, been part of the vanguard advocating for a people-oriented constitution that would emerge from public participation and referendum.

Olanipekun recommended a transitional phase between now and 2031 to allow Nigeria to gather, review and harmonise previous constitutional efforts, including the reports of the various conferences and committees on restructuring, ahead of the drafting of a new consensual document.

“During the transitional period, elections will still hold and the winners will serve their terms, but with the understanding that come May 29, 2031, Nigeria will operate under a new constitution, a new structure and a fresh dawn,” he said.

Olanipekun also canvassed the conduct of a national referendum, describing it as “a solemn act by which a people collectively speak in unison to decide matters of grave national importance.”

The legal luminary, who said referendums were not alien to Nigeria’s political evolution, said that sovereignty, as enshrined in Section 14(2)(a) of the existing 1999 Constitution, resided in the people, who therefore had an inalienable right to determine how they wish to be governed.

He advocated a reconfiguration of Nigeria’s federal structure, noting that the states, rather than the Federal Government, should determine the structure and governance framework of the country

He said, “The fact remains, and this fact stares us in the face, that the states appear to have lost their grip and gravitas on their traditional and constitutional jurisdiction and areas of influence with a federal system.

“Surprisingly, although not unexpectedly, people are still clamouring for the creation of more states. It is submitted that it is not the more the merrier, but that the more states are created, the more weakened the so-called federating units become and the more imperious the centre.

“It is now time for the federating units to take charge of the configuration, repair and re-engineering of Nigeria for stability in all forms, including but not limited to security, constitutional architecture, and form of government.

“It is the referendum, rather than the National Assembly that will decide whether or not Nigeria needs a National Assembly and if yes, whether full or part-time; their tenure, remuneration, tenure, among others.

“In other words, this National Assembly cannot act at that referendum since one cannot be a judge in his own case. It is the federating units that will make arrangements for the referendum being suggested; how it will be held, through which means it will be held, and what the parameters will be.”

In his remarks, the ABUAD Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, hailed Olanipekun for the “well-researched” convocation lecture, which he said was consistent with his (Babalola’s) advocacy for the country to have a new constitution to set the stage for the country’s overall development and growth.

Lawmakers’ London Trip Sparks Another Row

Sources also revealed that Hon. Ucheonye was discharged from the clinic to join his colleagues on a state-sponsored trip to London, reportedly costing taxpayers nearly N1 billion.

“Hon. Ucheonye has been discharged from the clinic to join his colleagues on a state-sponsored trip to London, United Kingdom,” the source said.

The lawmakers were said to have travelled first class and lodged at Premier Inn London Town Centre Hotel, Phillips House, 6 Lansdowne Rd, Croydon CR0 2BX.

However, the London trip allegedly turned chaotic as well. Reports indicate that another heated confrontation broke out among the lawmakers on Sunday morning. Speaker Emeruwa, Deputy Speaker Augustine Meregini, and Majority Leader Uchenna Kalu were accused of withholding part of the funds meant for the trip.

According to some members, only 40% of the money released for the trip was shared with them, while the rest remained unaccounted for. Hotel security was reportedly called in to de-escalate the situation.

One of the lawmakers who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that plans are already underway among disgruntled members to impeach the Speaker and principal officers upon their return to Nigeria over allegations of misappropriation and misconduct.

PoliticsOtti's Cash Gift: Abia Assembly Members Break Bottle On Colleague's Head by Slytiger(op): 5:05pm On Oct 21, 2025
Abia Assembly Majority Leader Smashes Beer Bottle On Colleague’s Head During Fight Over Governor Otti’s Cash Gift

The incident, according to multiple exclusive sources, occurred during a meeting of LP lawmakers at the Aba residence of Hon. Fyne Ahuama, member representing Osisioma Ngwa South Constituency.

Aviolent altercation broke out among members of the Labour Party (LP) caucus in the Abia State House of Assembly during a meeting over the sharing of money allegedly disbursed by Governor Alex Otti.

The Majority Leader of the House and member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, allegedly attacked his colleague, Hon. Akachukwu Ucheonye, who represents Aba Central State Constituency, with a beer bottle, leaving him with a deep head injury and severe concussion.

The incident, according to multiple exclusive sources, occurred during a meeting of LP lawmakers at the Aba residence of Hon. Fyne Ahuama, member representing Osisioma Ngwa South Constituency.

The meeting was reportedly attended by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, who was said to have cautioned those present not to leak details of the violent exchange or report the matter to the police.

“The lawmaker representing Aba Central State Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Ucheonye, suffered severe concussions and broken head after the Majority Leader of Abia State House of Assembly who is the LP member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Uchenna Kalu attacked him with a beer bottle,” a source privy to the meeting said.

“The attack followed disagreements during the sharing of money allegedly given to the members of the Labour Party Caucus of the state House of Assembly by Governor Alex Otti for passing the 2025 supplementary budget.”

According to the source, the “violent attack happened during the meeting of members of the LP caucus at the Aba home of Honorable Fyne Ahuama, who represents Osisioma Ngwa South constituency”.

“The meeting was witnessed by the Speaker, Rt Honorable Emeruwa, who directed that members present ensure that the story does not leak out to the public or be reported to the police,” the source added.

How the Fight Broke Out

One of those privy to the meeting told SaharaReporters that Governor Otti had “appreciated” the LP caucus for the speedy passage of the N150 billion supplementary appropriation bill in August, in addition to the N750.3 billion 2025 budget tagged “Budget of Sustained Momentum.”

According to the source, the governor sent an undisclosed sum of money to the lawmakers as a token of appreciation.

However, a disagreement reportedly ensued over the sharing formula. Hon. Ucheonye, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget and Planning, was said to have demanded a larger share of the funds, citing his committee’s key role in the budget process.

His insistence reportedly infuriated the Majority Leader, Kalu, leading to an exchange of words and then a physical confrontation.

Witnesses claimed Kalu picked up a beer bottle and smashed it on Ucheonye’s head, leaving him bleeding profusely.

“While discussing the sharing formula for the largesse, Hon. Ucheonye, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget and Planning, insisted on getting a lion's share of the money. This infuriated the majority leader, who proceeded to break a bottle of beer on the head of his colleague after a brief exchange of punches,” the source said.

Ucheonye was immediately rushed to a nearby private clinic, where he received treatment for his injuries. In a message later sent to Governor Otti, which included pictures and a video of his treatment, he wrote,

“Good evening His Excellency, this is a wound I sustained from the majority leader for trying to voice my opinion on issues boarding on the committee I chair for the house at the premises of Hon fyne Ahuama during our caucus meeting today at Aba.”

PoliticsObidient Movement In Anambra Endorses Governor Soludo For Second Term by Slytiger(op): 8:21am On Oct 21, 2025
Despite Political Differences, Peter Obi’s Supporters In Anambra Endorse Soludo For Second Term

Obidient Movement in Anambra, led by Ikenna Azomchine, endorses Governor Soludo for second term, citing integrity and performance.

Despite perceived political differences between former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023, Mr Peter Obi with incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, supporter of the former have endorsed Soludo for a second term in office.

Prominent supporter of Mr Peter Obi, and leader of Obidient Movement (a political pressure group supporting Peter Obi), Hon Ikenna Azomchine who is also known as Obidient General disclosed the support of the group to Prof Soludo, during a press conference yesterday in Awka.

Azomchine said the Obidient Movement has taken time to assess the government of Prof Soludo and have concluded that he meets all the criteria considered as part of good governance by the movement and so members of the group in Anambra have decided to support him.

He said: “We are disciples of good governance, and we have made the decision to support Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for a second term. We made this decisions obediently, considering the qualities that we hold as ‘Obidients’.

“The qualities are integrity, performance, credibility and others who we have always stood for as Obidients and the kind of leaders we need. We have no recourse to anyone who thinks we may have been bribed or offered money. As I speak today, we have not as little as met Soludo, and I can say it openly that these Obidients you see here are the core Obidients in Anambra.

“We are doing this knowing that those contesting this election will not be able to defeat Soludo. Obidients are known for being firm, honest and just, and we hereby endorse Prof Soludo.”

He said he and other supporters of Peter Obi arrived at the conclusion of supporting Soludo after taking stock of members of the movement in Anambra and realizing that there are more Obidients APGA in Anambra than there are in Labour Party.

He said: “We are not in dispute with anybody that the APGA Obidient are more in number than the LP Obidients. I did my personal assessment with my own self. I have cousins and relatives who are member of APGA and they all voted during the presidential election for Peter Obi.

“While we were taking this decision, we decided to be fair to the APGA Obidients because despite being members of APGA, they voted Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election. So it is time for us to support them. We are going to support Prof Chukwuma Soludo for a second term in office. We are doing that today with the support of all of us.”

Speaking on how they can pull out of APGA after the Anambra election to give support to Peter Obi in 2027, Azomchine said that was not a problem as they were not going to become APGA members, but joining APGA members to re-elect Soludo who he said was performing well.

Azomchine later led members of the movement to a rally organized by APGA members in Awka South at Amawbia to openly declare support for Soludo. He donated two vehicles to aid the campaign of the governor.

PoliticsEnugu LP Chairman, Entire Ward Excos Resign, Join Mbah In APC by Slytiger(op): 5:16pm On Oct 17, 2025
Barely 48 hours after the political tsunami that swept the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in Enugu into the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu East Local Government Area, Afam Joseph Ogbene, has resigned from the party along with the entire ward executive and defected to the APC.

Addressing APC leaders and a crowd of supporters who equally joined him in the party at Umuchigbo, Iji-Nike, Civic Centre, Ogbene said his decision was inspired by the foresight and purposeful leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, who officially moved from the PDP to the APC on Tuesday.

He described the decision as difficult but necessary, noting that the move was in alignment with his desire to support Mbah’s developmental vision for Enugu State.

“Today, I address you, the good people of Enugu East Local Government Area, out of the fullness of my heart. It is with hope, expectations, and excitement that I announce my decision to resign my position as Chairman of the Labour Party in Enugu East and to also withdraw my membership of the party,” he said.

“This decision was not made lightly, considering the hard work and sacrifices we invested in building the party of our dreams. Unfortunately, those efforts were rendered futile by internal crises orchestrated by enemies within.

“After wide consultations with my family, friends, and supporters, I decided to formally resign and join the APC. When I heard of the imminent defection of our amiable and hardworking Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, from the PDP to the APC, I became convinced that this was the right time to align with him in his mission to rebuild and transform Enugu State.”

Ogbene added that his supporters and ward executives had also resolved to join the APC in solidarity with the governor’s “uncommon and unprecedented developmental strides.”

“We are committed to supporting His Excellency, Dr. Mbah, out of our own free will. We recognise his performance since assuming office and believe in his capacity to deliver even more. Hence, we are not considering any alternative in 2027,” he declared.

Receiving Ogbene and his team on behalf of the governor, the Honourable Commissioner for Rural Development, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, commended their courage and described the defection as “a total collapse of the Labour Party in Enugu East.”

“You are a leader per excellence,” Ogbodo said. “What is happening here today is historic — the first total collapse of the Labour Party in any local government area of the state. The mammoth crowd here today shows your influence and credibility.

“It is time for Ndigbo to join the mainstream of national politics where power and opportunities are shared. We can no longer afford to play fragmented politics. Power in Nigeria is shared at the centre, and we must be where it is shared.”

On his part, the chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Pastor Beloved-Dan Anike welcomed Ogbene into the APC, noting that the collapse of the Labour Party in Enugu East Local Government, a first in the entire state, was a thing of joy.

PoliticsBayelsa Senator Joins APC, Says PDP Can’t Win Councillorship Elections by Slytiger(op): 10:13pm On Oct 16, 2025
The Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Benson Konbowei, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Konbowei’s letter of defection was read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Thursday.

The senator, in the letter, attributed his defection to what he called the ‘unpleasant circumstances and the crisis-torn situation’ in his former party.

He recalled that he had been a member of PDP since 1998, from which he was elected into the 10th Senate.

“After due consultation with my family, my associates, my political leaders in my state, and across the nation, I have resolved to join the governor of my state, the state of Bayelsa, Sen. Douye Diri, to resign my membership of the party.

“In coming to this decision, I have taken a deep look at the protracted leadership crisis and the division that has resulted from the competition for power within the PDP, especially at the national level.

“I have lost hope in the capacity of my party to play the role of a political party that is capable of winning councilorship elections in Nigeria,” he stated in the letter.

Mr Konbowei said that PDP, built on lofty promises for Nigerians, had fallen into the wrong hands, adding that it currently lacked principled leadership.

“The PDP has become characterised by eternal power struggles, irreconcilable conflicts and, at the moment, is in total disarray,” the senator said.

According to him, no politician will sit and wait for those issues in the PDP to be resolved, even as the 2027 elections beckon.

“Accordingly, it has left me with no option but to resign from that party. So, I hereby resign my membership of the PDP and hereby declare my total loyalty, support, and movement to the APC,” he said.

Mr Konbowei’s defection to the APC comes a day after the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, announced his resignation from the PDP, alongside members of the State House of Assembly and other top politicians in the State.

Mr Diri did not, however, announce his next political party, despite initial rumours that he was joining the APC.

With Mr Konbowei’s defection, the ruling party now controls 74 seats in the 109-member Senate.

His fellow lawmaker from Bayelsa and senator for the Western senatorial district, Seriake Dickson, had said on Wednesday that he would not defect from the PDP to the APC.

Mr Dickson, who is the immediate past governor of the state, said Mr Diri, who is in his second term, informed him of his plan to resign from the PDP.

The reaction of the lady to Peter Obi's utterance, shown below, would be that of reasonable and law-abiding Nigerians to the shockingly repellent talk of someone who wants to be President of the biggest black nation on Earth yet is sounding like a terror sympathiser.

Of course Nairaland is not full of reasonable and law-abding Nigerians so I don't expect many to agree with the Lady's disgust at Obi's insensitive and lawless talk.
The lady's eyes don open.
BusinessMichelin Planning Comeback After 18yrs Of Exit From Nigeria by Slytiger(op): 10:59pm On Oct 15, 2025
After eighteen years of shutting down its production plant in Port Harcourt and eventual exit from Nigeria, French tyre manufacturing giant, Michelin, is planning a ‘strategic’ comeback to the country.

This came to light during TechCabal interview with the Managing Director and Vice President of Sales for Michelin Sub-Saharan Africa, Amaury Vadon.

Michelin, which was the leading brand in the Nigerian tyre market in the 20th Century shocked the world when it shut down its production plant located in the oil-rich capital of Nigeria’s Rivers State in 2007.

The unfortunate shutdown was due to the very unfavourable business climate in the country at the time.

Though the company has not announced plans to reopen a factory, according to the news report, ‘it wants to rebuild its brand visibility, strengthen local presence, and position Nigeria as a key growth hub in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

Michelin’s shutdown of production which marked the end of an era in Nigeria’s tyre manufacturing history, was followed by exit of its major competitor, Dunlop.

Factors accurately adduced for their ‘deaths’ in Nigeria include unfavourable business conditions, inconsistent government policies, and the influx of cheaper Asian imports.

TechCabal further noted that in 2008, 90% of tyres sold in Nigeria were imported, up from just 25% in 2005, a shift that reshaped the industry entirely.

“Today, Nigeria’s tyre market is worth an estimated $820 million, projected to hit $1.12 billion by 2030 at a 6.4% compound annual growth rate. Yet, despite growing demand, driven by the country’s 40 million-strong vehicle fleet and expanding road networks, the market remains dominated by low-cost brands. About 80% of Nigerian consumers buy budget tyres, mostly from Asia,” the medium wrote.

Michelin reportedly views this major challenge as an opportunity.

However, Michelin MD Amaury Vadon was quoted to have said, “It’s true that after the shutdown, many Nigerians thought Michelin had left the country. But Michelin never truly left. We may have stopped manufacturing, but we remained commercially active and are now more present than ever before.

“We are not importers or distributors. We have Michelin employees in Nigeria. That’s a key difference. We believe in having people who can explain our value, our innovation, and why Michelin products matter.”

Towards the strategic comeback, it’s revealed, Michelin has restructured its operations in Nigeria, transitioning from an export model to a fully owned local agency. The company now maintains an office on Victoria Island, Lagos, staffed by Michelin employees who oversee direct sales, marketing, and customer engagement.

The company’s renewed focus is on two major growth segments: passenger car tyres and beyond-road activities such as agriculture, construction, and port operations. The size of the passenger car tyre market in Nigeria for 2025 is estimated at over $0.82 billion for producer and importer revenues, with passenger car tyres being the dominant segment in the nation’s overall tyre market.

Popular passenger car tyres in Nigeria, such as 195/65R15 and 205/70R15, measure about 195–205 millimetres in width and fit 15-inch wheels.

Their proportions and related variants are valued for their strength and reliability on rough local roads.

Nigeria’s evolving automotive landscape, with a growing preference for larger, high-end vehicles, drives demand for premium tyres in the 18-inch-and-above category, and confidence already built by the current government’s bold policies of economic reforms, ongoing road construction and infrastructure projects which have created new opportunities in heavy-duty and off-road segments, must have inform the company’s decision to fully return to the country.

In the United States, you hardly see a Democrat decamping to Republican. It's only in Nigeria I see political prostitution at it's nasty zenith. Imagine this betrayer calling it political alignment. Using semantics will not diminish the meaning of political prostitution.
Oh well. The US and Nigeria are two different countries.
