I. Introduction A new nation has been born. Fourteen million people have taken their destiny into their own hands and embarked on the task of building a nation free from fear, bitterness and hate. Their sole aim is to develop their innate capabilities and rear their children in an atmosphere of peace and security. They stretch their hands of fellowship to all nations and appeal for understanding, friendship and co-operation. We, Biafrans, opted for self-determination after a long period of heart-searching and after making desperate efforts to save the Federation of Nigeria from disintegration. More than any other people in the former Federation, Biafrans contributed their human and material resources to the cause of national unity. From 1914, when the British amalgamated Northern and Southern Nigeria, Biafrans began to leave their homeland in large numbers to settle in several places among the Fulani-Hausa in the North and the Yoruba in the West. In those areas they opened up new avenues of commerce and industry and at the same time built new homes and erected places of worship and institutions of learning. By so doing they came to acquire a real stake in the progress and well-being of ALL parts of the country. They regarded themselves as citizens of Nigeria to an extent that no other group in the country ever did. Wherever Biafrans sojourned their industry, resourcefulness and drive marked them out from their neighbours. In the North, particularly, the distinction was enhanced by religion; for while the majority of the Fulani-Hausa population were Muslims the Biafrans were and still remain mostly Christians. In addition, the progress and dynamism of Biafrans contrasted with the tardiness and conservatism of their neighbours who were generally unable to achieve the same standards of efficiency and prosperity. The envy and animosity the Biafrans excited were manifested periodically, such as in the massacre of Biafrans by Northern Nigerians at Jos in 1945 and at Kano in 1953. The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), has said the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate President is not illegal. About 51 senators of the All Progressives Congress had, on Wednesday, threatened to go to court to challenge Saraki’s emergence. However, Alegeh told our correspondent during a telephone interview on Thursday that Saraki’s emergence as Senate President was a moral issue and not a legal one. An APC senator, Barnabas Gemade, had said that the 57 senators that were present when the election for the Senate President took place were not enough to pick a new leadership of the Senate. see more of this story Register on our website and start posting your storys |
President Muhammadu Buhari has a controversial multi-billion naira pipeline protection and waterways security contract to think about, as a heritage from the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The mentioned agreement was sealed between the Federal Government and a company linked to Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, a former Niger Delta warlord. Olanrewaju Suraju, a chairman of the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), thinks there would be no justification for the new administration to continue the contract. According to him, more crude oil has been lost to pirates, oil thieves and “the water ways are still largely insecure and thousands of barrels of crude oil are still lost daily in oil theft and pipeline vandalisation.” See full story |
The immediate past governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has advised his successor to start looking for ways to move the state forward and stop being pesky over inherited debts. Yugada in a statement released by his media team warned the newly sworn-in governor of the state, Muhammed Abubakar, not to tarnish the good image of his administration. The former governor pointed out that most state governors had billions in overdraft left for their successor, “unlike Bauchi that did not inherit any overdraft and is looking for who to blame their ignorance on”. According to Yuguda, Abubakar should be grateful that he restructured all loans to make them easy for the state to repay without going broke, Daily Post reports. “Under my administration, Bauchi state raised a N15billion bond and N7 billion was used for the repayment of previous loans. The balance was used for the completion of the mega specialist hospital as well as the airport. click here to get the full story |
