Nairaland / General / The Ultimate 10 Years Challenge by smartinkblog: 7:10am On Mar 19, 2019
It swept across all social media platforms within a twinkle of an eye like an untamed virus that have eluded all possible vaccines. The 10 years challenge experience was a paradox to many because they were already into it before they took a second thought to analysis the source and purpose behind it. But it wasn’t so fortunate that some people still never had this second thought.

For the first time
For the first time I saw people running faster than Usain Bolt to their archives to sort out old pictures that the world possibly haven’t seen before; in fact the world need to see these pictures at this time. Cameras became busier than before since it needed to give new images that would commensurate with the old ones to give a perfect 10 years challenge. I was indeed really surprised at such wave of electric force that cut across the social media platforms during this period because it carried an unusual energy that was hardly expressed on social media before now. I think the last time I ever heard that people could run with this kind of force was when Ebola was mentioned in their vicinity – everyone ran, not to their archives, but to a distant safe haven.

“Before” and “Now”
“Before” and “Now” were the title of virtually all pictures that erupted like a volcano on every social media space. I saw all and sundry rushing into this challenge dome to display what they have to show the world. Everyone wanted to quickly maximize this opportunity because it will surely become a stale gist if you come late into this sphere of challenge when its vibrating frequency had gone low. My eyes were glued to my phone like an eagle that watches over its new hatchlings since my phone kept popping up notifications of various shades of 10 years challenge every second. That’s was interesting anyway but I had to lose my sleep at some point because my eyes kept asking for more glimpse of the challenge.

One Voice
I saw the young and old all surfacing on the social media on a single pivot for the first time. No one was interested in arguing if Chelsea or Manchester United will win or lose the next match. It wasn’t any more a case of if Cristiano Ronaldo was better than Lionel Messi or not. Wow! Everyone actually spoke with ...

Nairaland / General / The Experience Called “failure” by smartinkblog: 8:54am On Mar 18, 2019
The experience called “failure” is such that is synonymous to everyone. Hardly would anyone ever boast not to have ever encountered a failure experience or a failed attempt. Even if no one ever wish to fail at doing a particular thing but accepting that you have failed when you did puts you on a better platform to learn from your experience thereby creating rooms for improvement. It would be small-minded and narrow in thought to assume that in our pursuit for excellency and greatness, failure will be totally nebulous, neither should we stigmatize our failure experience for in it lies great lessons that when properly comprehended can skyrocket us to our greatness.

Grass To Grace
Prior to Thomas Edison’s invention of the incandescent light bulb were host of other scientists which include Sir Humphry Davy (1801: platinum filament, 1809: carbon arc lamp), James Bowman Lindsay (1835: Incandescent light demonstration), Warren De la Rue (1840: vacuum tube enclosure), Frederick de Moleyns (1841: powdered charcoal filament), Joseph Wilson Swan (1873: Carbon fiber filament), and Woodward & Evans (1875: Gas filled “globe”). They all had one or more scientific contribution in one way or the other to the development of the Incandescent light bulb but the name “Thomas Edison” rings louder in the mind of many and easily found on the lips of most people when the invention of the light bulb is mention.

Don’t Give Up!
Thomas Edison wasn’t the best student at school. His teacher once referred to him as a student that is “too stupid to learn anything”. His case was so pathetic that his teacher had no interest in teaching him. He was already termed a complete failure. But Thomas Edison never gave up even when his experience of failure kept signaling on him to give up. Though he tried to be the best he could in his early age but luck was hardly on his side.

Learn Some Lessons From That Failed Attempt
Did Edison later grew up to become the best employee at work either? Not really! Edison was seen as a “non-productive” staff which landed him up to being fired from his first two jobs. By a layman analysis, Edison had every reason to have given up his dreams and chart a new course since his pursuit for excellence was continuously rewarded with failure. But he wouldn’t see failure as a distraction but a means to learn new ways to become better.

Let Excellency Be A Habit And Not A Temporal Act
While attempting to invent the incandescent light bulb, it was said that Edison had 1,000 failed attempts. When Edison was asked about how he felt to have failed 1,000 times, he replied “I didn’t fail 1,000 times”. He continued by saying, “the light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps”. We tend to approach perfection when we see those failure as mere steps to attaining our desired Excellency. It is worth knowing that it will be uneasy to lose track in pursuit of Excellency if we make Excellency a habit and not just a temporal act. When “Excellency” becomes a habit and a lifestyle, irrespective of the failure experience you may encounter in your pursuit, you’ll always see clear image of possibilities ahead of you . That image of possibilities is what keeps you going thereby serving as the energizing factor to attaining that desired Excellency.

We All Can Do The Impossible
Ben Carson almost lost his shine and would have equally wiped away his name in “the book of history” if he had yielded to the influence of this experience called failure. From his book titled gifted hands, even before admitting to operate on the little boy, Dr. Ben had concluded that it was a failed case, owing to the fact that to the ...

Nairaland / General / Compliment Of The Season by smartinkblog: 1:48pm On Jan 06, 2019
Be Inspired | Be Motivated | Be Informed
It’s December 31st night and the whole street is glowing with different colours and varieties of lighting, with glamorous excitement noticeable at all corners. Everywhere looks crowded with the young and old, and there seems to be a balanced equilibrium even between the poor and the rich as everyone wore the same mood of unlimited celebration. It’s 5 minutes past 6 pm and no one seems to be indoors for dinner; maybe they had dinner alongside with lunch – double meal, who knows. Malls and shops looks crowded than ever before; buyers and sellers kept the business atmosphere warmer than the heat of summer. The wave of happiness and joy that everyone was expressing made me feel the government have reduced the price of petrol by 50% which has been the demand of the community two weeks ago, which was also preceded by a national strike and protest. The whole scene kept me quite perturbed with much curiosity while the feeling that something new, which should be to everyone’s benefit, had just happened in the community without my knowledge, until it resounded to me that it’s December 31st night which means the year has come to an end, then I didn’t bother anymore to ask anyone what the uproar was all about.

Gradually I became consumed with the excitement that was all around me. The more I tried to get hold of myself, the more I found myself being swallowed up by this irresistible excitement. Then I discovered that I’ve been unconsciously initiated into what should ordinarily be part of me – the joy that comes with the compliment of a season! “Compliment of the season!” was the shout that echoed behind me. It’s Michael, our old family friend. I often call him by the nickname “Maiko” as a sign of respect instead of addressing him directly as Michael since he is 5 years older than I am. I responded by saying “compliment of the season” coupled with handshakes. He then shouted, “long time no see.” I also did replied him at each instance in same tone. While exchanging pleasantries, we barely completed a sentence without repeated handshakes – that’s the way we do it from where we came; we are used to multiple handshakes while exchanging pleasantries because handshakes have their own significant gesture, especially when we haven’t met each other for a long time. Maiko actually came over to see his parents so they could spend the last hours of the year together as they launch into the New Year together. That’s a nice gesture from Maiko.

“Compliment of the season”, that’s what we kept saying to each other with much expression of happiness as we kept the handshakes reverberating. As old friends, we wouldn’t keep the discussion ongoing without talking about our past, so I asked him “how has the year been with you?” He replied in a low tone, “it has been so-so, my bro. I wish the New Year will be better.” “Better? What do you mean by better?” was my response to him since I already felt somewhat fascinated by the “so-so” response he gave to me. During our discussion, Maiko told me he had some New Year resolutions which he made exactly same time last year but ...

Politics / Mother Africa, Will You Ever Be Great Again? by smartinkblog: 3:59pm On Dec 28, 2018
Be Inspired | Be Motivated | Be Informed
Blessed with the milk and honey of all kinds of natural resources, you have been an indisputable point of reference. You were adorned with huge deposited of nature-gift which didn’t exclude the most precious of all metals and stones. The spontaneous luscious fragrance that radiates from your precious apparel are enough to resuscitate fading glories. Your inestimable beauty is second to none. You have always been the center of attraction, attracting all and sundry to have a taste of your beauty and blessed resources. You are a rare gem that can’t be found carelessly anywhere on planet earth other than in the land of beauty called Africa. You are indeed rich, seeing that your wealth are natural and can’t be imitated or emulated by any sort of artificial wealth. Oh, Mother Africa! Oh, Mother Africa! You have been known for your natural beauty and this fact can’t be contented.

In time past, countries of other continents have come to you seeking for solutions to their problem. You used to be a place where others run to in search of daily bread and refuge. I was once told by my fathers, even as history would have it, that your greatness was so vast cutting across so many sectors of the industry such that one of the early king of one of the kingdoms of the Middle East had to come to you for medical attention. Is that really the case today? Why have things fall apart so quick? Why have the center of envy become a place of less worth?

I see many countries of other continent that equally gained independence at approximate time with most of the countries you gave birth to, but I’m also aware that most of these countries are fully independent today, making headway around the globe with all kinds of development and technological innovations. Why allow this unacceptable level of inequality? Mother Africa, where is your independence?

You started this marathon with many other countries of the world, but it seems most of them have gone far ahead of you despite the fact that you have ALL it takes to be great and even greater than most of them; was it that the baton wasn’t well passed on in the race or is it that other unknown factors crept in during this continuous and never ending race? You have been applauded for being one of the pioneer of civilization, but it seems you completely sold out your patent of civilization to the white man. Where have things actually gone wrong? Will you ever catch up with them again?

Things have indeed fallen apart! Things are still falling apart! They have gone so sour than we have ever anticipated. Would you allow these things to keep falling apart at your watch? You have been looked at with so much ...

Politics / The “christmas” You May Not Know About! by smartinkblog: 3:49pm On Dec 28, 2018
Christmas is one of the most celebrated “festivals” today. It has become so famous that is has gained so much ground even in places or countries that wouldn’t want to identify with the reason for the season. Well celebrated with its jingles heard even in places with little or no idea of what Christmas is all about. I was in a shopping mall during this period and I discovered that most shops in the mall were well beautified with attractive Christmas decorations, but I was pretty sure that they knew very little or completely nothing about Christmas because it’s clearly written all over their faces from their gestures. No matter what we do for Christmas, if the reason for the season is missing then what we are celebrating isn’t Christmas!

To many, it is a festival like every others such that the festive mood have been so prioritized than the essence of the season. It’s even getting worst to the state that some people have started comparing it with carnivals like the nothinghill carnival and the likes. Who said Christmas is a carnival or jamboree? Please give some answers if you have any. I once spoke to a man about Christmas and he replied me, “Christmas is a western festival”. That’s surprising because he sounded so affirmative about his knowledge of Christmas but it appears to me that all he knows is that it’s a festival designed by the west to influence others culture, period! In the freezing cold of winter, on my way to work as I hurried to catch up with the shuttle, I met a neighbour and said to her “Merry Christmas”. She replied me, “we don’t celebrate Christmas, because it isn’t one of our festivals nor part of our culture!” Wow! That was also surprising seeing that Christmas have been reduced to a thing of culture.

Today, Christmas is seen as a time to make new friends, hangout with old friends, make reconciliations and possibly find new lovers – that’s the definition in the minds of many, while others see it as a time for shopping and most especially buying of new wears. To some it is a time to gift themselves with new items ranging from expensive wears, jewelry, cars or even houses; that’s not completely bad. To some others, it’s a time to make wealth at all cost since they would need to return to their families to celebrate while showcasing their wealth; for them it’s apparently a time to compete among friends as they gather together for Christmas. That’s just the idea that rules the minds of many. It’s for sure that Christmas have been wrongly interpreted if these are all we know and think about Christmas. Some of the above mentioned may not be outrightly wrong if the reason for the season is well understood and dwell richly in us. The underlying question still remains, “what is this Christmas?”

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ; it isn’t just an ordinary celebration of birth like every others because the personality of Jesus is so unique that we would hardly celebrate Him to the fullest without having a knowledge of Him. Isaiah, the prophet, wrote in Isaiah chapter 9 verse 6, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” He spoke of a child born unto us – you and I. He also spoke about the characteristic names of this child born to us; Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The summary of Christmas lies in what Isaiah prophesied about His birth and to have the joy and happiness of Christmas to the fullest, we also need to have to the fullest the meaning of what Isaiah was saying in the above verse.

Firstly, he wrote, “For unto us a child is born…” meaning we have Him this day given unto us. It means that He is now present with us and among us. The child Jesus is a gift to mankind. A gift that is above all gifts we can ever think of or imagine. He continued, “…, unto us a son is given”; son signifies strength, might and power. In most places especially in Africa, a male child is very essential in a family such that most couple would keep making babies until they finally get a male child. To them, the male child also signifies continuity of life and lineage.

Secondly, he wrote about what will happen at the arrival of this baby called Jesus that have ...
