wip7: Oily wastewaters are heterogeneous in nature, thus containing various types of oils, metals, surfactants from detergents, metals etc......The content/composition and concentration of oily wastewaters varies greatly between various industries. Therefore, to design effective treatment technology for oily wastewater, there are few points/parameters to be considered.
1. Type of treatment technology 2. Type/content of oily wastewater 3. The salinity of the oily wastewater 4. What will you use the treated water for will determine the degree of the treatment. 5. Weather system (is it iced water oil spill or ambient temperature (non-frozen) water) 6. Size of the oil droplets
In practical application, combine treatment technology will be effective for enhanced oil spill cleaning. The common effective combination is based on membrane filtration and adsorption technology. You have indicated the use of adsorption technology and your focus is on polymeric adsorbent (chitosan).
Chitosan has gained tremendous success when it comes to wastewater treatment due to its bio-friendly nature and modifiable functional groups. Commonly, we have oil droplets in the range of 10-50 μm which is suitable to be treated by adsorption technique, however, 50-150 μm will be suited for membrane filtration (majorly Forward osmosis) and beyond 150 μm will be suited for advanced oxidation processes.
In recent years, hybrid materials/adsorbents have received much interest owing to high adsorption efficiency, high surface area and strong affinity. You can modify the chitosan with functional agents to make it hydrophilic, considering the hydrophobic property of oil droplet. Hence, you may prepare grafted or modified chitosan considering the following, to modify or graft the chitosan:
1. dimethyl acryloyloxyethyl benzyl ammonium chloride 2. Silica 3. Polyacrylamide 4. Alginate 5. Catalytic metal oxides (CuO, Fe2O4, ZnO) 6. Zeolite (this is commonly used in oil industries) 7. layered double hydroxides composites (LDH)
My suggestion: Prepare LDH and modify chitosan with the LDH. Read about LDH and check the efficiency and properties. LDH/Chitosan adsorbent or membrane can be prepared and used in both the fixed-bed column treatment system or via batch adsorption. If you want to use in batch system, you can prepare LDH/chitosan beads which are easy to prepare.
Here is an example of modified chitosan with alginate for oily wastewater treatment.
Find here my work published on LDH:

Best wishes thank you sir for your response, really appreciate it sir. Have gone through some of published work on adsorption and I have really gained alot going through them. Searching through the internet for all your published work on adsorption. Thanks again for your time. |

obidark: i dont agree with this nonesense....
i have no trouble with yorubas, hausas and others....
but with igbos...??....oo yes....!! you piss people off and turn around and say its normal, everybody hates everybody.... what is actualy not true....
you go piss ghanaians off and suddenly say they hate nigerians.... i communicate with ghanaians without problems....
soo,why cant you just behave and keep a low profile...?? is "lack of trust " same as "hatred"? , cos I never mentioned d word "hate". U really need to go back to school |

D lack of trust between and within ethnic groups or tribes in Nigeria is quite alarming. Dere is a lack of trust even within d north, dats y d north central is way behind politically even among d northern state. A state like kogi were d okun, igala, ebira, bassa so not trust themselves also. So d division actually goes beyond d normal south and north issues. Can't understand how we got to dis point, but d future isn't looking good except we urgently so something about this division amongst us. I wish for a Nigeria were people will win elections based on wat dey can offer and not just their ethnicity. |

wip7: Adsorption is based on surface property, the affinity of the adsorbent towards the adsorbate, then both physical and chemical characters of the potential adsorbent are necessary.
For agro-waste, the catch is that it can be subjected to valorization (value-added) and also serves as an emerging research area called bio-economy (becoming popular in Western Europe now) and cost implication.
Apart from the low-cost of the agro-based adsorbent, the potential adsorbent must have a high surface area, well-developed porosity (for trapping pollutant), environmentally friendly, easy to process, have useful functional groups that may be attractive for selective adsorption of pollutant. Can be regenerated and can stand high reuse cycles. You have to characterize such potential adsorbent before you can know its physicochemical characters.
Meanwhile, you can visit ScienceDirect for various agro-based used for adsorption. Attached is one sample review you can always find many. Hello prof, please I need your guidance, am thinking of writing a research proposal oil spill cleanup using low-cost materials as absorbent, but can't decide on d appropriate materials for the adsorbent, because they have to be hydrophobic and oleophilic in nature. Please sir,can you enlighten me on some of the choices available.... Thinking of modified chitosan. |
