The Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Mr. Marcelo de Franco, has lauded the authorities of Kunike International School, Osogbo, Osun State for providing an enabling teaching and learning environment in the school.

A statement from the school, on Wednesday, said the envoy also commended the owners of the institution for their vision.

According to the statement, the school is planning a partnership with some tertiary institutions in Canada.

In the planned deal, pupils, who want to further their education in some Canadian institutions, would spend the first year at the school before continuing their studies in Canada.

The high commissioner, who visited the school clinic, laboratory and other facilities, assured pupils of the school of the available opportunities to further their education in Canada.

He said, “It is a nice visit. I am impressed with the facilities in the school. The directors are driving towards collaborating with some institutions in Canada. So, we will be working towards finding potential Canadian institutions that will collaborate with them.”

The proprietress of the school, Mrs. Olanike Adekunle, said that the institution, being an international one, had concluded arrangements with some tertiary institutions in Canada where interested pupils would further their education.

Adekunle said, “The school is a co-educational one with efficiency to build future leaders, who will be fortified with the fear of God and academic excellence. The school will not derail from the pursuit of academic and moral excellence it is known for.”

Pupils of the school, she noted, under the arrangement, would spend their first year in Nigeria before proceeding to continue their education in Canada.

I watched a political drama on TV in 2008. It was that hearing by a committee of the Senate on the activities of the Federal Capital Territory under Nasire el-Rufai. The committee members had a mission, so they channelled their energy in the direction. The proceedings showed it. There was this civil servant that had been sent packing from the Federal Capital Development Authority; he came to testify at the hearing. He was the abrasive type, ever talking in absolutes, the type that thinks he’s ever right. He saw the hearing as an opportunity to take his own pound of flesh. I found his aggressiveness and the sentiments he expressed in his presentation repulsive. It might be why I remember his presentation so vividly. I remember other episodes too, such as the manner the committee cut the former FCT minister off whenever he attempted to respond to questions. A committee member had even threatened to cut down to size one of the minister’s former aides who was invited to the hearing. But it’s the civil servant’s total condemnation of the actions of the former FCT minister while in office that spurs this piece, especially now that el-Rufai has emerged as the governor of Kaduna State.

I have watched closely the politicking in Kaduna State since September 2014 when el-Rufai made his intention known to contest the office of the governor. I have watched closely too some of the comments online about his ambition. Many of them rhyme with the title of this piece. But I have other reasons for writing under this title. One was where Nigeria found itself that made millions to eventually vote a much castigated personality like Muhammadu Buhari as the President. The other was what I knew of Abuja in the May 2003 season, one month before el-Rufai was given the job to “go and clean up the FCT” by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Moving on sidewalks in the Wuse area of Abuja was a challenge in those days. Driving past Wuse Market was a task because enterprising Nigerians had taken up available spaces. Everyone had open shops that they did not pay for. Inside Wuse Market, space meant for about 500 shops or thereabout had thousands of shops. In other parts of the city, every space beside the road was a shop.

The administration of the FCDA itself was another matter. Corruption was another name for the activity in its offices. Award and sale of contract were the only business that throve in the FCDA. Fake Certificates of Occupancy were all over Abuja. It was to be revealed later by el-Rufai that just about 10 per cent of the houses in the FCT had genuine CofO. The rest had no proper documentation. I had, at that time, served as the secretary to a group at the head of a large organisation where members informed me when demolition began under el-Rufai that they had informed people they knew not to buy land and develop them in the FCT in the manner they did because such land belonged to the government and should not be sold by private individuals. They were ignored. In the FCDA offices, there were people who had no business or qualifications to be there. Downsizing and rightsizing happened. El-Rufai who executed it became a public enemy. After he left office in 2007, the sacked civil servants were brought back to their offices. In 2014, a former Minister of State for Finance said such civil servants contributed to the bloated civil service and the higher percentage of the annual budget that went into caring for service civil servants only. This point is like jumping a chapter in the tale. Back in June 2003, the president saw the rot in the FCT and sent someone he thought was intelligent and courageous enough to get the job done. By September 2003, I was able to go through Wuse area without worrying about sellers on the sidewalk who had become landlords. Illegal selling points were cleared and the roads because free. Inside Wuse Market, the space for just 500 shops was reorganised according to the original plan. The changes that came to Wuse in a short period of time surprised me. It made me come to the conclusion that if a government had the will, it would have its way. What the then FCT minister put in motion makes me believe that it takes just one determined leader to turn a whole nation upside down, right side up.

What was happening in Abuja in post-June 2003 was more than clearing of roads and market spaces. The rottenness in the FCDA was dealt with. I paid attention to how the FCT minister had invited to his office men who came to hang around the FCDA everyday waiting for contract papers, and asked them if they would stop coming once he made the process of award of contract open and transparent. The contractors agreed. The minister did as he said; daily gathering of contractors disappeared. House owners whose structures were demolished for one reason or the other in that season, but who had documents, were compensated. Others who had no documents known to the FCDA were the complainants. Also, a visit to the FCDA offices showed that things were working. A letter would be responded to on time. Process was followed on whatever brought one to those offices. In 2010, I recollected writing a letter to an organisation where one of the former senior aides to el-Rufai was the boss. The response to my letter came by courier two days later. I was not surprised. But back to 2007 when el-Rufai was leaving office, many had considered him an enemy. People who had engaged in illegal activity in order to procure one thing or the other in the FCT of the pre-el-Rufai years did not see anything wrong in what they did, but they saw what the FCT minister did wrong by putting things right. I had sat with many and listened to the sentiments they expressed, all bereft of objectivity. Members of the Senate committee that held that 2008 hearing on the FCT exhibited the same. Evidence of the kind of persons they were and their mission in that hearing was in the book, “The Accidental Public Servant”, written by the former FCT minister.

I am not referring here to an el-Rufai that is a saint. I am pointing to a human being who was placed in office and he did what he thought was right for the public good. He had admitted making mistakes either by himself or his aides, as well as what might have been done differently. While he was castigated, I had seen non-performing public officers celebrated in this land. It had happened on the floor of the National Assembly; there in 2008, another former minister of the FCT under whose watch part of the descent into chaos that Abuja experienced happened was hailed as a national hero.

Now it’s 2015 and the people of Kaduna State have brought into office the man they called “Mai Rusau”, Mr. Demolition. For me, the metamorphosis of the former FCT minister into a state governor has shown that on days when dearth of courageous public servants hits the land, and truth is exposed for what it is, rooms are created for true public servants who have hitherto been rejected. Circumstances in Kaduna State before this time had also paved the way for the emergence of an el-Rufai, just as the situation in Nigeria had helped to make the emergence of a Buhari possible. Kaduna State has not been fortunate to have governors who know exactly what they want to achieve. There’s no sign of a vision that’s ever pursued to its conclusion; meddling through has been the order. The state gets funds from the federation account in billions of naira. It owes debts in billions, yet not one project worth N10bn is seen anywhere. Insecurity is a major issue. Disillusionment was palpable. It’s interesting that when “Mr Demolition” made his intention known to become governor, his profile in the FCT that showed him as a performer, compared to the man currently in Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, spoke for him. Now it’s a good thing that a public enemy has become public friend, poised to rescue his state from decay.

The nanny, who kidnapped three children in the Surulere area of Lagos State, has said her husband, Waheed Kareem, is the mastermind of the kidnap.

She added that Kareem was the head of a kidnap ring that involved some members of his family. It was gathered that Kareem escaped arrest.

The nanny, who adopted a pseudonym, Mary Akinloye, to deceive the Orekoyas, confessed that her actual name was Funmilayo Adeyemi, a 35-year-old indigene of Osun State.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the Orekoyas had posted on OLX, an online sales portal, saying they needed a nanny for their children.

The suspect was said to have contacted the family and was employed immediately.

Barely 24 hours after she was employed, the nanny abducted three children of the family – Aderomola (11 months), Adedamola (4 years) and Demola (6 years).

Our correspondent reported that N15m ransom was initially demanded from the family, which was later reduced to N13 after much appeal by the victims’ mother.

PUNCH Metro reported that the family paid an undisclosed amount of money into the bank account of the kidnappers before the children were released on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Kayode Aderanti, announced that the nanny had been arrested.

She was paraded at the Lagos State Police Command Headquatres in Ikeja.

The suspect told our correspondent that it was the second time she would be abducting kids in the state.

She confessed to have been responsible for the kidnap of two kids– Rapheal and Michael – in the Magodo area of Lagos State.

Adeyemi said her husband, four children and she were formerly living in the Ajah area of Lagos State, but relocated to Shasha to evade arrest after kidnapping the Magodo boys.

Adeyemi claimed that the victims’ parents paid N2m, adding that she was paid N30,000 by her husband.

She said she was contacted for maid jobs through her brother-in-law and his wife, who were always online to track posts.

On how she kidnapped the Orekoya children, she said, “On Wednesday, their father and mother went to work. I put the little one on my back, while I held the others by the hands, telling them that I wanted to buy them something. We boarded a vehicle to Ojuelegba and from there; I took another bus to Iyana Ipaja and contacted my husband.

“I took them home, where they stayed with me in one of the rooms. I bought cereal for the 11-months-old baby; he was always fed with pap at his mother’s place. I gave the others normal food. They always watch cartoon on the television; they never missed home.

“My husband told me that he wanted to collect a token from the parents, but the following day, I found out that the kidnappers demanded N15m.

“I challenged my husband for asking for such a big sum. He said I should shut up because I had already fulfilled my part and that it was time for them to do theirs. Later, I heard in the news that he had reduced it to N13m.”

The 35-year-old said she did not feel any remorse for her action until she saw the victims’ mother weeping on a national television.

She said she begged her husband to release the kids.

“But my husband said he would not release the kids until he collected the money. Later, he told me they had paid the money,” she added.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the kidnap gang consisted of four people– Adeyemi’s brother-in-law, Hakeem Kareem; her husband, Waheed Kareem; her sister-in-law, Ajoke Oseni, and herself.

She said when the police arrested her, she was at a fan repairer’s workshop, adding that her husband saw them taking her away and fled.

Adeyemi said she was a victim of bad marriage, advising parents to always investigate on the kind of man their daughters intended to marry.

She appealed to the Orekoya family to forgive her of her wrongs.

She said, “Mummy Damola, don’t be offended at what I have done. This is what bad marriage did to me. I only delivered the message of my husband.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that when the police arrested the suspect, a 16-year-old girl, Henrietta Odili, was equally apprehended.

Odili, an indigene of Delta State was said to be living with an uncle in Benin, when she saw a post on OLX that the gang needed a maid.

Odili, a Senior Secondary School pupil, told our correspondent that she ran away from home to work with the group and she was overwhelmed by the love they showed her.

She said, “I met this woman (Adeyemi) through OLX. I was searching for a job online when I saw that she needed a maid and I decided to work with her. When I got to their place in Lagos, they took my phone and said they would return it after one month. But they never did until after two months. When they returned it, they had removed my SIM card. I observed that all their things were done in secrecy.”

Asked if she saw the Orekoya kids when they were kidnapped, she said Adeyemi told her they were children of a popular artiste, Waje.

She said, “When she brought the first two kids– Michael and Rapheal – she said they were her family members and were on holiday.

“She told me that the new boys were Waje’s children and their mother asked her to take care of them. I never suspected I was living with kidnappers.

“But yesterday (Wednesday), we went to visit somebody. I just noticed she started running and I ran with her. The police caught up with us and said she was a kidnapper, and I was a suspect.”

The Commissioner of Police said the police got the suspect by tracking her telephone line.

He said, “Upon the rescue of the kids, I gave the directive that she should be arrested. We tracked her down through her phone, using the technological tools at our disposal. We arrested her at Shasha, where the children were rescued.

“Initially she denied that she was involved in the kidnap. But eventually she opened up. We are in hot pursuit of others and we will get them soon.”

Aderanti advised parents and guardians not to be in a hurry to employ house helps without doing background checks on them.”

When our correspondent visited the residence of the Orekoyas on Lawanson Road, he met the family in a joyous mood.

The children were seen playing around the house.

On their experience, one of the children, Demola, said, “Our aunty took us to our new house. She gave us bread, indomie and rice. They put us in a bag, like the one they put rice in, and put us inside the car.”

Their mother, Adebisi, said despite the criticism that had trailed her decision to hire a nanny on OLX, she did not think she was wrong.

She said by employing a nanny, she was also creating a job.

Their father, Leke, refused to disclose the amount paid to the kidnappers.

A Turkish court has ordered blocks on Twitter and YouTube for sharing photos of a hostage taken during an armed siege last week.

The blocks have been imposed because images of a deadly siege were being shared via the social networks.

In the siege two gunmen reportedly from a far-left group took a prosecutor hostage at Istanbul central courthouse.

All three died in a shootout when police stormed the building during a rescue bid.

Before imposing the blocks on the websites, Turkish authorities had moved to stop newspapers printing images taken during the siege last week.

The newspapers were accused by the government of disseminating "terrorist propaganda" for the DHKP-C group that was reportedly behind the attack on the courthouse.

The DHKP-C is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and US.

The same pictures showing attackers holding a gun to the head of prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz were also being widely shared on social media, leading authorities to act, reported Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

In total, 166 websites which shared the images were blocked by the court order.

YouTube published the text of the court ruling on its website saying an "administration measure" had been enacted by Turkey's telecoms authority.

Facebook was also subject to the same block but it is believed the restrictions on it have been lifted after it removed the images.

Many Turkish people reported via social media that they were having problems accessing the sites and many others.

This is not the first time that Turkish authorities have imposed blocks on social media sites and networks.

In the run-up to local elections in March 2014 blocks were imposed after recordings circulated allegedly revealing corruption among senior officials.

Figures provided by Twitter revealed that Turkey filed more requests to remove content from the social network than any other nation between July and December 2014.
