I first found this thread before I started my fish farm and it was rich with information and with very helpful individuals. Now it's full of adverts and beer parlor fights.
To the reason why I'm making this comment....
This is my first rodeo in the fish farming business. I got 500(520) fishes at the start of January, I sorted these fishes yesterday and I only counted 475. That's 45 missing, although I didn't count them from the farm I got them, but I called the farm and he said that the missing ones have been eaten(really ). So those who are experienced, is there a way one can tell when fishes get eaten? Or is there always no traces?

After sorting, about 150 of these catfish have grown to an impressive size(who knows if they are actually impressive since this is my first time), then the large bulk of them seem moderate. But there's a fraction that I separated from the two ponds that seem to haven't changed in size since the first day I got them. They are about 50. I place them in a baf now and since yesterday, they haven't eaten their feed. What should I do please?

Other problems I seem to face is, their water stinks frequently. Especially the ones with the bigger fishes. I change the water in the evening and the next morning, it stinks badly. Is it supposed to be this way? Especially for their age?

Good morning to u.
First, from d beginning of January till now is enough time for such number of fish to have been eaten by other ( the reason y u see some are very big) . The fish u bought are not very good set, that's the reason u saw those small ones that did not grow well and they have not been feeding well.
third, the reason why the water is stinking is because of r water management practice, u overfeed the fishes thereby leaving a lot of feed in the water which end up polluting the water.
fourth, the small fish that are not eaten place them in a comfortably place, u can give vital to boost their appetite or any other appetizer but don't overfeed them.

Pls stop changing their water too frequently, the stress is extremely too frequently and much such as sudden change in water composition,water temperature ,Ph and so on, it will surely afect their body activities including growth, feeding and any other thing u can think of just work on r water management practices.

No sir. Am into aquaculture hatching then selecting the best to rear. (catfish). Pls stay away from poultry production for now .it's not profitable cos of the high cost of feed and feed ingredients. Look into other agro enterprises.

Very right u are . u can't bit . I learn this work from old ,young ,illiterate and literate and am still learning ,so sir, u are far from bittin it. Even though we are all a subject of imperfection and can only learn help from each other and to each other.
I never condemned r expertise everyone is good on his own but u trying to talk others down ....u are far from it and still maintain my stand that most of r professors can not hatch a common fish ,how then can they train graduate on how to do that .Education is over emphasized in Africa,that's the base line

Having a PhD doesn't make you good. Always know that. I have been in education conferences to know that. Also know that those that have the resources to complete a master can successfully finish a PhD.

So my brother, don't let your PhD make you feel too much please. My younger brother is a PhD lecturer(not even a candidate & not even recent doctor) in the 2nd best university and my Juniors are professors(also my younger brother Juniors too), so don't let I am a PhD student make you think you know better than ANYONE here on this forum.

There are many things you don't know, but thinking because you are doing PhD that you are an authority, if you like don't have 3-5 publication from your PhD and then you will know you achieved nothing afterwards.

I wish you the best in your PhD, because of people like you I will do PhD and give hope to people that it's not impossible.
I have been doing that, hence decided to just read and know more.

I am a master student to the Glory of God with over 4.6/5 at master level, aside thesis. But for strike, my thesis would have been completed. And I am not studying in North also.

Be humble please. PhD only are authority in their fields.

PhD is about building character too, if you like don't be humble and see how you can fare. Anyone that can do master program under good supervisor and have funds will do a PhD successfully

Pls go back to the topic line on how Nigerian educational system has no influence on the practical expertise in the real world and have almost no relation with r level of success outside the school, then I will give u the due response but for now u r out of line my able colleague. the importance of education is great, it will help your conduct yourself, it help build how one relate in a larger society, it could build meaningful friendship for your future etc.

About the area of performance, it will help your cognitive in terms of reasoning, it helps you solve things or give solution by what you learn, though most theory.

If indeed you want to be great in your field, get skilled from illiterates in your field. I have seen graduate engineers learn from welders, mechanics. The young man that taught me hatchery in fish farming was a graduate of business administration, whereas the learner is an agronomy graduate that have seen a lot in agric even on the field.

Educatn is great. And we get educated from both formal and informal sections

I already typed a lot but I realized r write-up is not worth it . Pls everyone reading this post should look into the society that we live in and tell me the essence of staying 5yrs in Universities when as an engineer u can not remove plug from an engine ,and a graduate of fishery u don't know what quanaldine is used for or what is karkaban and a six month apprenticee will separate complete engine or hatch fish then manage them up to table size that's the difference between been fed with theories and actual practicing
And some one is written that u go to university so u can conduct rself and to think and solve problems . I laugh u . What u don't know ,u don't know forget about that r 100 page notebook at r 500 level. U are actually talking to a PhD student of ATBU.Agro Economics

let us not put blame on the lecturers, at times the system does not help them to do something. Also they cannot work outside their curriculum.

Personally I asked at least one of the lecturer that the teaching over two to three decades does not differ from what is obtainable now and he said there are many talented lecturers, but the political will is not there. Their salaries cannot be used to give unique teaching styles because they have to continue to write papers and it's not always cheap

then what is the essence of the education,if one can Not b practically sound in his own field.

sorry I sounded strong on r post . just that I hate those years I spent in the university with those expired professors killing one with expired theories. Everything I know today in aquaculture,I paid in 50s of thousands to know them far beyond the practical scope or curriculum of those Universities.

have u been changing their water regularly? if yes check the acidity of the water, if it's lower than 6.5 or even 7 then lime the water , if the acidity is good 6.5-8.5 then salt bath them or add TTCM and AMCL pinch in their water for treatment or combine the two treatment withdraw feed from them for about 3 days then watch r management practices. Hope it will be helpful .
