SportsRe: Nigerians Representing Other Countries In The Olympics!! by SmoothCrim: 9:20pm On Aug 06, 2012
mpmp: Why is everybody whining about men/women OF NIGERIAN ORIGIN representing other countries. Is it wrong to do so?

I think its pure selfishness and greed to assume and conclude that just because they have Nigerian Heritage, they have a responsibility to represent Nigeria. When these athletes were training 24/7, dreaming big, enduring all the stress and rigor of traning, working multiple jobs, applying for scholarhips up and down, getting their lifes put together, I wonder where all of you were. Now that they are at the top of their game, we have the time to start researching their surname and parental heritage.

Is Barrack Obama representing Kenya?

If His father was Nigerian, I'm sure by now we would have stoned him with our Nigerian Heritage stones and he would be out of the white house. We would have blamed him for all the woes that befall Nigeria just because of what doesnt even concern him.

Many of those listed are actually not Nigerians. That you were born by Nigerian Parents, but bred abroad and lived there all your life does not make you a Nigerian. We can be ofcourse mild to say they hold dual citizenships, etc. What would you all say if it were these foreign bones and muscles that represented Nigeria - if all our homegrown talents were booted out. Wont we be the ones crying cruelity and partiality?

And for those athletes who change their nationalities just for the purpose of pursuing their dream, why cant we look inwards as a nation and ask ourselves what makes them leave. If the American Embassy opens its doors to just about anybody, even the Agberos will apply for American citizenship.

Are there not foreigners that live amongst us? do we consider them Nigerians, regardless of the # of years they have been domiciled in Nigeria, lived, studied and done business in Nigeria? do we allow them to have their own Nigerian breathing space?

Mind you, Mr. President Goodluck Jonathan went to bombard Trinidad and Tobago with a 70-member entourage, meanwhile we Nigeria has 53 athletes to represent 150million people at the Olympics.

Isnt the puzzle solved now?
Good post!! shocked shocked shocked

SportsRe: Blessing Okagbare Places Last In 100m Finals by SmoothCrim: 3:34pm On Aug 05, 2012
rume: Her heat was ok but her semi and final starts were just not good. She expended so much energy catching up in the semis.
Talking about potential, I cry, I really do, here I am wasting away after such a great time running in school. If only, things turned out differently... how can one train to world standard without support... so sad.
Support support support!!!

In the end maybe if we develop a sporting culture and rivalry(very important) in the ECOWAS region and help and encourage each other we will get on top!!! In the end, investment will be the difference. If some of these countries are able to find these world class athletes out of 1 million men then, Nigeria with 85million men with a similar genetic stock can find 85 of them but, without investment one gets nothing...

The same thing is starting to happen to East Africa with Somali Mo Farrah now winning the long distance... You see, with natural ability Ethiopians have been beating European nations in the long distance but, as more East Africans go to Europe and get top class facilities they will beat the ones form back home representing other nations... At the world class level every little edge helps!!

Nigeria should be the greatest sporting nation in the world!! The greatest!! But, the nation can't even get one medal!! Every Olympics should be USA vs. China vs. Nigeria!!!

As a nation of 170 million people Nigeria should be competing with the USA and China for supremacy in the Olympics but, this is not happening... Looking at how people of West African decent do at the Olympics the potential is there. Them being there and doing well suggests West Africans can do well... The only difference between them and us is often having a culture that loves the sport and easier access to world class facilities since they are in the America's... In the end out of a population of 170 million if you look hard enough every world class athlete who is dominating(especially those of African decent) has their genetic print or one very similar to it in the general area... To find the person with it you have to create the culture for the sport and fund it!!! It also takes HARD WORK, HARD WORK, HARD WORK!!!

Instead of stealing athletes money and being corrupt you could invest in sports rather than send a bunch of unprepared people and pray for luck!!! tongue grin grin grin

gbadexy: African leaders should take a cue from mr annan.
The man knew he wasn't making any difference and he opt out, still leaving his integrity and reputation intact.
Some fools would rather cling to the job until disgraced out.
