BENIN CITY - The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the university of Benin, Sir Gabriel T.G. Toby has lamented the threat to lives and university structures by the massive gully erosion at the Ugbowo Campus of the university.


Sir. Toby was reacting during an inspection and assessment visit to the erosion site by the Governing Council of the university.


A statement by the Head, Public Relations and Protocol, Richmond Omagbemi, the gully erosion which has eaten up a large expanse of the university land has been reported to have encroached by as much as 25 metres per annum.


According to the statement the gully is now about 500 metres wide and about 10 kilometres long.
The Pro-Chancellor in the statement called on the Federal Government, the Edo State government and the Ecological Disaster Relief Fund to assist the University of Benin in arresting the erosion which has already claimed the university fence and some houses.

The Co-ordinator of Benin Province, Justice, Development and peace/Caritas JDPC), Reverend Father Fidelis Avhedo has condemned and described as absurd last Tuesday’s kidnap of Reverend Sister in Jattu, Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.


Speaking in a interview with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER in Benin City, Rev. Father Arhedo noted that it was absurd for anybody to kidnap anyone who had vowed to be obedient and loyal to the church and God, adding that every Reverend sister or father has vowed to live a poverished life for the sake of humanity.


According to father Arhedo, “They have vowed to be poor, to live the life of the poor, work and live with the poor. For anybody to go and kidnap a consecrated person is absurd.”


The cleric who expressed worries that the abducted sister may be defiled by the kidnappers because she will not be ready to pay any ransom, pointed out that she would not pay any money as a God consecrated lady.


Avhedo who strongly condemned the act of paying ransom to kidnappers by any genuine man-of-God, stated that the Catholic Church had resolved not to pay any form of ransom for the kidnapped sister, adding that reverend fathers and sisters are highly vulnerable to kidnappers, as they accommodate anyone that comes their way.


In his words, “I am of the view that our church should not pay any ransom. I have also said that if I am kidnapped, nobody should pay any ransom because I have given my life to God. I have no wife, and I have no children so if you want to kill me, kill me and let me go to my god”.


While admitting that there are political and socio-economic problems in the country, the clergy admonished kidnappers to refrain from the devilish act, stressing that kidnapping will not solve the problems in the country.


He said what the country need at this time was the re-structuring of the nation’s political and socio-economic structures, as well as bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.


Noting that the Nigeria police have not been able to arrest the menace of kidnapping because of the complex nature of the complex nature of the Nigerian society, Father Arhedo explained that nobody was ready to give useful information to the police because of fear of being harmed, and called for value re-orientation and re-conscientisation in the police and citizens.
