Due to the scarcity of fish oil ,i want to quickly tell u how to make ,your own fish oil .
Get some fresh fish the very cheap ones you can see in your locality, cut off the head and slice the stomach open to remove the intestine , its very important so the head or intestine will not cause the fish to rot before forming the oil.
Cut the fishes to small pieces and put them in a container like the small white plastic paint bucket , add small water to just cover
the fish top a little. Close the plastic , so that air can not get in , and look for any cloth like a towel to cover it ... Keep it in a cool dry place for 10days .
Open it, and you will discover a thick white layer on the water because oil and water does not mix, gently remove the oil from the water buy pouring it out into another jar and you have 100 percent fish oil with good raw fish smell . The more the fish ,the more the volume of fish oil and the used fish can be add to making your fish feed so nothing is a waste .
Now to increase your fish oil, you can add to every 1 liter fish oil, add one quarter vegetable oil and mix to give u more quantity ,
Advantages of fish oil , it serves as an attractant and its a source of oil and protein , it can almost totally replace or reduce the amount of costly fish meal used in your feed .
When you have low quality feed just spray fish oil on it , allow it to sun dry and bag. you will see how the fish will eat the feed they earlier rejected ..... other source of attractants are chicken intestine waste , cow and pig fats and hatchery waste eggs any of these can be used also .

Interesting, does this MINI WRS also operate by gravity or electricity ?

IT uses both t the electricity used is very small ,its just 1 liter of fuel in 2 days for a pond containing 2 thousand fishes to table size. The beauty of the system is that, with this minimal electricity used , your water is well aerated with good optimum ph and all the trace ions in your water are corrected, giving fish a better faster growth. And you dont need to worry about water irrigation or much work its just self automated etc.
The main advantage is u can store 2 times the number of fish in a same pond size as in the regular partial flow throw system..GOD BLESS

The feed is on the high side at 230 per kg , try to replace the fish meal with the local fish meal cause all fish meal have same crude protein .Also your brewers waste and soya are doing same job , they are both plant protein with almost same percentage crde protein so i suggest u use 1 plant protein the cheaper of them and increase your gnc to 10kg .
Do your maths again and you will arrive around 150 naira .I also want you to know when you buy brewery waste make sure u buy the very dry ones or you dry it yourself and not the ones that are a little wet , because during the manufacture of beer a lot of active bacteria and fungai are cultured in the fermentation of the grain used and some of these bacteria still lives actively in the waste or spent grains ,which will further continue to break down the process in a wet waste .It may make ur waste too concentrated and this may be bad for your fish health , if its not properly dried .GOD BLESS

SIR If you dont have steady water source ,then i recommend you use what i call a mini water recycle system and with 300 thousand u can have a capacity of 1000 fish to sell monthly .

One and half liter of fish oil is ok for 100 kg feed and 30 kg blood meal is also ok for 100 kg feed.
It is not possible to give a feed formula that is economical in all the regions of the country, an economical formula in the west may not be economical in the south or north ,what i do for people who contact me via whatsapp is, i tell them to go to the local feed ingredients market ,get the most cheapest price of ingredients, and i work out a particular quality and cheap formula for low FCR 1 to 1.2 .

You never answer my question that I raised yesterday night. You mentioned cassava flour in the feed formula. Are u referring to Gaari or Cassava flour used for bread making? Also, the Soya beans, Is it Full fat Soya or Soya beans meal? Thank you.

cassava flour for bread , but not particularly the very good ones for humans, there are waste cassava they dry and ground , ask your local feed store , you can use ether full fat soya or soya meal both are plant protein

Want to point out that fish meal cannot be sold at N150 anywhere, 72% is 600, 68% is like 500 although am not using it, clupid fish is 420 per kg and all dis Fish meal have different Fish meal concentration, is dt not a factor in considering ingredients? As in choosing an ingredient with respect to its concentration. Another point is d side effects of some of this ingredients for example blood meal, I heard it's not easily digestible for the fishes and can eventually cause death, however the general idea of the fish formulation is gotten, just feel to point out this ringing questions in my head.

Though the calculation remains the same , because we did not use fish meal in my calculation analysis , i also gave range of ingredients you can choose from that is more or relatively cheaper in your locality ,
Now to blood , many people have misunderstand or miss use this cheap but very effective ingredient . Blood meal is used all around the world for planting and also for mixing livestock , poultry and fish feed .
Benefits of using the blood meal .
In as much that its one of the most cheapest animal protein, it also contains one of the most highest crude protein, of about 75 to 80 percent crude protein , more than fish meal. Blood meal act as a growth booster for little growing fishes, because it contains high non synthetic nitrogen , phosphorus and potassium.. NPK ;
Its non synthetic nature makes it an organic fertilizer or fish growth booster ,by easily breaking down its nitrogen to form amino acids which in turn form flesh or tissue of fishes .
A feed contanning blood meal does not need you to add lysine , because blood meal contains high concentrations of lysine which is good for fish growth
For grown catfish ,some mix blood meal directly with soya meal and garri and mold it together to feed catfish , though this is very crude way of feeding, but some farmers obtain substantial result ,but this type of crude feeding can pollute your water by making it change in colour but by adding waterhiseed in your pond, this plant will eat up all the excess nitrogen in your pond and clear your water naturally .
Waterhseed, is that plant that grows in the lagoons , or some ponds , when u add just 2 or 3 waterhiseed in your concrete or earthen pond , they can multiply to 100 in 2 weeks .and clean your water naturally
Blood meal can not be toxic to your fish ,if it is boiled and sun dried , like all animal protein blood meal harbour some toxic bactera , but these bacteria can only survive at room temperature between 32 to 36 degree , so when you subject your blood to boiling , all the toxic bacteria are killed or destroyed.
My advice is you can use blood meal between 25 to 30 percent ,that is to every 100kg feed, you can add 25 to 30 kg blood meal ,and pellet together with your other ingredients .
When you pellet it , at this ratio mentioned above ,it can never pollute or become toxic to your fish .GODBLESS

What is the mean protein content of Soybean?
Some book says soyabeans contain 35%protein while other says its 48%, this has made the calculation of protein in feed formulation unstable

THE crude protein ranges from mode of processing the meal and type of soya used . When you subject soya bean to much higher heat and pressure to get the the oil for human and the cake for animals . The protein content changes ,ts not the same protein calculated during un processes .
your final crude protein depends mostly on mode of processing , good soybean meal should be between the range of 40 to 45 percent protein

thx for your reply sir.The issue of power is not a big issue here in Benin city as our light here is 3hrs on and 3hrs off and I think that would be enough to manage the system.But for that of the tank u talked about if the power is out there is no way the pump would pump water out of the pond,won't the water coming from the tank fill the pond and thereby causing overflow out of the pond.pls simply explain how the re circulatory works with the system,thxz

I WILL TREAT A TOPIC ON ALL THE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS, MANAGEMENT , COST ,ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF ALL SYSTEM ;But i will partially brush through the recycleatry system for your quick understanding ,
Recyle system, is a system designed most especially when u have limited water , limited irrigation , good power source and you want to stock almost times 5 the normal carrying capacity of your pond .
Biofillter comes in difefrent capacities but most imported biofilletrs can carry little hatcheries or little farms , even in advance countries they do what they call ,DO IT YOURSELF system or D:I:Y: system .
This diy system is better in that you can easily expand or reduce , that is adjustable. The system depending on your quantity of fish , now let me take u through in a summary ,I personally call recycle system as an advanced flow throw . its the same thing i explained on topic aquaponics .
The bad water from your pond, instead of just flowing it away you take it though different chambers to purify the water and back to ur fish , thesse chambers contains biological materials thats were the name comes from BIOfillter , using a biological means or living things in your chambers to purify your water system.
Your bad water are realesed out from your pond , it goes to a sedimentation chamber or a conditioned chamber to settle the undissolved solids like algea and fish poo, gradually .
The water is then pumped to another chamber were the micro organism in the water or chamber will further break the amonia to nitrates and then the nitrates concentrated water is passed through the 3rd chamber to were we have plants or activated carbon material like charcoal that will absorbs the nitrates and make the water free of nitrates , making your water pure , but in the process not the total volume of water will be retrieve. You will need to add water at least 10 percent more volume to replace the evaporated water in the ponds or chambers .That is why, i said you need a tank , but if u have constant electricity as you said , no pb, all good. but for rest of mind , what if electricity did not come , what will happen?
Well am pleased to inform you that with my advance improvised DIy system i can install it in your pond or farm , you will not need electricity to pump water,you will not need water pump ,i can install it in a way that you will run it by gravity a self running and self purifying system without you , you can travel and leave your pond for months and the system will continue to recycle without electricity ,but u will definately need who just go thereto feed ,or if you can buy automatic time feeder , which feeds your fish at at regulated time without your presence , fasmers who do other jobs usually need this. HOW TO COMPOUND AND PELLET INGREDIENTS : After successfully identifying which ingredients are cheaper in your location , then the next step is to know at what percentage in kg will u need to mix the ingredients up, to get the right amount of balance diet for your fish.
first you need to know , the crude protein needed by your fish to get to 1kg , in the shortest time possible ,with the lowest fcr.This will automatically determine your profit.let me elaborate for further understanding , i want us to look at it in another way, since feed takes almost 70 percent of our cost of production , we want to see how we can take these cheap waste ingredients put them together in kg to give us same amount in kg in our fish .
What we do in fish farming is just converting feed which are cheap ingredients not really needded by humans and sold in little amount to something more needed by humans that is fish, and more valuable and higher in price. So the lower the amount in money of quality feed ingredients the better or bigger your profits.
Now having this in mind, i will elaborate further , when compounding your feed select the cheapest ingredients in your location from each of the nutrients and compound them together : In money term , i will use kwara state ,someone i helped with formulation on my whats app, gave me some rough estimate of price ingredients in his locality ... CARBOHYDRATE : maize 80 naira per kg , cassava flour 70 naira per kg , indomie 90 naira per kg , PLANT PROTEIN : soya is 140 naira per kg , potatoe leaves meal is 40 naira per kg , groundnut meal 120 naira per kg , ANIMAL PROTEIN : blood meal 70 naira per kg , fish meal 150 naira per kg , chicken offal 100 naira per kg , FATS AND OIL : groundnut oil 50 naira , pkc 40 naira :
Now using this price list, you can now look carefully taking each cheapest ingredients in each nutrients and compound , having in mind that your catfish needs about 30 to 35 percent crude protein to get good growth and fingerlings and smaller fish needs 40 to 45 crude to grow .NOTE , if u are blessed to be close to a chicken processing plant were you can get chicken offal at wholesale and cheap amount , then you can feed your fish at higher crude protein even up to 60 percent , to increase there growth and get to 1kg size in even 3 month 2 weeks , lets go back to our calculation . from this particular list ...CARBOHYDRATE ,i will take cassava at 70 naira , for PLANT PROTEIN ,i take potatoes leave meal but for this calculation i will take soya meal , why because i know most people get soya easily, so soya 140 naira per kg , : ANIMAL PROTEIN we take blood meal which is 70 naira per kg, ANOTHER THING TO NOTE : if you are not using fish meal make sure u get fish oil to spray your feed after pelleting to make the feed more palatable for your fish to eat, because most fish tend not to like blood meal, but when you mix it with other ingredients and pellet ,spray with fish oil ,they will eat ruggedly.
Blood meal has the highest crude protein more than the costly fish meal , but u dont need to add too much blood meal , just because it makes fish grow big and fast in a shorter time .you have to mix at the required percentage.
Lets continue FATS AND OIL :pkc 40 naira per kg
With these prices we can now do our calculations , cassava 70 naira , soya 140 naira , blood meal 70 naira, pkc 40naira now if we get the average amount per kg , adding all the 4 prices = 70 plus 70 plus 40 plus 140 = 320 then divide by 4 we get 80 naira means we get the range of 80 naira per kg . that is if we are adding all the ingredients in equal percentages which i personally do when am compounding finisher feed , for my fish that are close to market . NOTE BY , yellow corn and pkc will help increase your fish weight.
But this is not finished , the 80 naira per kg is for the four major ingredients so adding vitamin premix ,fish oil , floxinor , salt dpc etc , is about 20 naira average . So 80 plus 20 will give us 100 naira per kg , so if u are making 100 kg feed you need 100 naira multiply by 100kg feed this will amount to 10 thousand naira for 100kg feed.
Lets say grounding, pellet and drying will give u about 3k so total u should be in the range of 13 thousand for complete 100kg finisher catfish feed . This is finisher feed , for growers feed you increase the plant and animal protein most especially your animal protein ,
Instead of that ratio 25 :25:25:25 for finisher , for growers feed its a little more expensive, because of the more expensive protein ingredient you need to increase .
So for growers i want us to know that we dont need pkc when making growers feed ,pkc is better when you are doing finisher feed , so as not to retard or slow your fish growth, because pkc will make your fish gain much weight , without flesh gain . This will lead to stunted growth, because pkc give high energy .
But you can increase protein as u want , you can even feed only protein if you know how to and have a very cheap source to buy , but i will give a general ratio, increase your protein either plant or animal protein to replace the pkc.
To know which of the protein to replace the pkc in growers better and more economical
From this our particular list the blood meal, animal protein is cheaper but because for every 100 kg feed i dont advice more than 30 kg blood meal , so its either we replace the pkc with other chaeper animal or plant protein , so if u have the cheaper local fish meal , you can use , its ok , or buy some cheaper plant protein .
So for reducing your total cost of production especially for medium scale farm from 5k monthly grow out to larger scale fish farms , you can buy your ingredients in bulk,i mean wholesale , they will sell at reduced price or if you fish in acomunity of many fish farmers you can form a group and buy fish feed ingredients in bulk . And you can have a mini feed mill, it will further cut that 12,000 naira for 100 kg feed to 9000 naira .
This is why larger farms maximize profit and even sell cheaper but no problems by GOds grace everybody will get there, with determination and focus , taking it step by step growth in fish farming is sure . A journey of a thousand mile start with a step.
Now lets compare prize differences between local and foreign feed .
Now local feed 100 kg with crude protein 35 to 40 percent gives 12k naira to compound , and a foreign feed with 5k average price for 15 kg will give approximately 33 naira for 100kg , looking at the difference in price we have about 20 thousand naira different .
For someone with high capacity farm that feed more than 100 kg feed weekly. Think when you have to save extra 20 k weekly as extra profit.
Now for further reduction; that can make your 100 kg feed amount reduce to 7 thousand naira from 12 thousand naira.
I will give more elaborations when we start our trainnings in my farm from febuary . Things like how to personally turn free cassava root to carbohydrate , how to process that unwanted free algea to plant protein and reduce your feed cost , how to process that free duck weed in your pond to replace plant protein, how to culture non smelling maggot to replace animal protein , i mean odourless maggot , and how to make semi floating feed and gelatine based feed ...In fact gelatin based feed can reduce ur cost more further to 6 to 5 k nira for 100 kg feed , because you need no pelleting no drying and it floats on your ponds , if you are interested in all these and live demonstration a 1 day workshop in my farm weekly , will be organised , from febuary 2016 and inetrested persons farmers or co-operations will gain more in feeding , hatching , super intensive system, fish processing , pond construction , nursery best managements etc . FEED This is the most expensive and broad part of the business, but i believe its the most simplest aspect of fish farming if we get it right . For better understanding i will divide this topic in to 3 sub topic .INGREDIENTS IDENTIFICATION , HOW TO COMPOUND AND PELLET THE INGREDIENTS and HOW AND WHEN TO FEED YOUR FISHES :
But before we start , i will quickly chip in ,the most singular but very effective part of fish farming is seed procurement. Please and please your source of fingerlings is very important , dont accept normal fingerlings, always request healthy first or at most 2nd set shooter ,ensure the hatchery use the write size and age of parents brood , because the wrong doing of any hatchery is the lost of the growers farmer, or else , return the fish back ,because no matter the management you can never get result , its outright lost .No need to waste money ,energy and time .
Buy from reputable hatcheries with good management track record ,people like prof robonski and other eligible hatchries around. Distance and time should not be the problem, better you go throw the stress and time of getting good seeds than throwing your money away ,its more than important to get good healthy rugged fast growing fingerlings before spending money on feed.
Having this in mind , i see on this tread and others that i have consulted for privately , tend to miss up this sub topic
INGREDIENT
1, Fish require balance diet which are majorly starch or carbohydrates , proteins .vitamins , minerals , fats and oil, these ingredients are readily available all around us , but we seems not to see it .
2, I see people asking formula , its not reliable to take maybe my formula which is cheaper and more economical for me in the west and a farmer living in the north wants to use same feed formula just because am using it , knowing the fact that the , said ingredients, for my formula is not readily available in his or her own locality . My advice are we make what is called relative feed formula, or economical formula .
Let me further elaborate...You see, kg of cassava in the west could be for example 50 naira per kg and price of cassava in the north could be 100 naira per kg , so for you in the west cassava is relatively cheaper in your location than the farmer at north .
So adviseing such farmer to use your own formula , farming in a different location may not be economical to another farmer in a different location . If you are not careful ,you may end up formulating feed that is more expensive than the costlier foreign feed.
3,Using same nutrient at same time in same feed formula ,i have seen some very outrageous formulas ,they are un necessary expensive and waste of money , how can u have cassava flour and wheat flour in same feed formula , when they are both starch , or have corn and indomie in same feed formula when they are both starch , or have pkc and vegetable oil in same feed when they are both source of oil , lets use one ingredient nutrient at a time to save cost .
4,Be carefull with some feed mill operators , who will want to give you countless ingredients to buy from them,they may be using you just to sell there products .
With good four ingredients and mineral premix , a good super growth fish feed formula can be made.
5,list of easy ingredients... STARCH OR CARBOHYDRATES: cassava flour , cassava roots , koko garri, corn , potatoe leaves , brewres waste, wheat flour , rice bran, wheat bran , molasses etc
ANIMAL PROTEIN : Fish meal, chicken intestine or offal, blood meal, feather meal, poultry hatchery waste , baby pigs , milk waste or bevrages waste, bone meal etc
PLANT PROTEN : soya bean meal or cake , groundnut cake , cotton seedcake , any tuber crop leaves eg cassava leaves ,potatoe leaves , duck weed , algeaetc
PREMIX :Broiler starter , vtamn premix, mineral premx enzymes , etc
,bone meal,
FATS AND OIL : Palm karnel cake P:K:C: , groundnut oil , coton seed oil, vegetable oil ,
LIVE FEED : maggot , tilapia fries , brine shrimp fries, daphna , zoplanktons , termites , all types of ants , deform livestock babies etc. But most live feed are used for smaller fishes , like fingerlings and juveniles , but for bigger fishes live food is used as supplementary feed or used to mix your feed ingredients to compound .

@soft777 and Robonsky , I planed to use a ready made biofilter with the capacity of 45,000l and can pump 8500 l of water per hr.do I I have to use a storage tank.i planned to fill the pond to a level then use the pump to pump water to the biofilter then back to the pond,when ther is water shortage I will pump more water from the boer hole.I want to know if it ideal to do it to do it this way or advice me on. What to do as a prof.

In water recycle system as in the case , with nigeria, light is not guarantee.
I will advice you have a tank , not that you cant do it direct ,but with a tank ,it does 4 major things , it helps send fresh water to your system by gravity even if you have no light , there by saving cost of energy , secondly , from time to time this cycle system still need additional 10 percent top up of fresh water to cover the loses due to evaporation . Thirdly it help your water settle better by adding little treatment to the tank in case you have very high or low ph. fourthly it helps save more time for the beneficial microb in your biofillter to work actively to break down the amonia properly before releasing same cycled water to your pond . So with these points its very very important to have a tank GOOD LUCK

Sir soft777, my fingerlings are just 3 weeks old and they are about 40000 pieces and I just poured them on my15*15 feet earth pond.before month end, they post fingerings so that I can stock just 5000pieces. Please I plan to use recirculatery system on the two Tarpolin pond with size 6*36 feet and 4 feet depth.I have just three big tanks for the recyclatery system but I don't know where to buy the remaking component like bio filter, UV system, aerator, and so on. Please can I come and visit your farm to get a first hand info on how to set my own recirculatory system or u can refer me to an expert for a fee.

Hello sir I just aquaired 4 plots of land for fish farming and I have constructed some earthpond and some woodpond.the sizes of the earth pond is 30*60 and I have 2 earthpond. Thanks for your confidence in the system , installation on farms will start from febuary sir , in as much my team is on ground in nigeria. i still want to be on ground from febuary to personally supervise any project . And the one on my farm is still under constructions i will pre fare before i install on your farm you take a day visit to my farm by january to see a life demonstration and see its benefits , then we can install by febuary on yours , it cost almost nothing .
But if you have just constructed your pond tell them to create an harvest point at the most shallow part of your earthen pond it will make your harvesting very easy .
I like you also to practice super intensive , you will profit greatly , and tell the people constructing to dig you a little pond i will tell u how to cultivate tilapia and shrimp in it .

Thank GOD sir , the major thing is we should not overlook these little informations we try to dish out as mear write ups. The greatest problem any nation can face is food security.
I grew up hearing government will help farmers everyday on the news but till date nothing, its time we maximize profit and dont wait for government lips services for help .
In advanced countries around the world ,the richest people are into farming in one form or the other, i can give countless list of names here .Gone are the days we say, farming is for the illiterate and poor ,and that there reward is in heaven .I say our reward is here on earth.
Life itself is risk, if you dont try something or attempt to try something, you just cant seat in the comfort of your sitting room and judge if something will work or not .
Lets all dynamic and industrious people on this great tread take the bull by the horn , start small no matter your capital , start little and grow gradually ,if you dont have land you can rent , if u dont have pond you can rent ,learn while on the job , its the best way of knowing the job better , mistakes are allowed to some certain extent .

I am a testimony to others , i left my good paying job 3 years ago in holland , just to invest big in my integrated farm and manage it myself , now i can proudly say i earn 10 times more than my previous job . Though it came with a lot of ups and down, but with God , determination , focus and seeking training or knowledge , you will get there .

During my recent successful completion of my program in aquaponics in france . I was opportuned to say, my eyes have been well open to latest techniques of maximizing profit in all form of agric business ,
i was opportune to know on a practical bases that nothing in agriculture in fact the world is a waste . There is no such word existing anymore as a waste ,every waste can be recycled to something valuable .
Isreal is situated in a desert; but they grow and export crops that are originally ment for cold countries .Holland is a man made country , formed by adding sand rocks etc to form a country out of water, but still they grow and export crops that naturally grows in desert environment .All these means with the right knowledge most impossible things can be possible.
During my program ,one of my instructors ask how come west africa especially Nigeria with a vast land tropical and rain forest zone, with almost all year round sunshine and rain fall , still import almost every food and export less. He used these exact words that we are under utilizing our God own given potential.
Now to cut the long story short , its time we fish farmers add extra value to our production and maximize or utilize our farm to its full capacity . How do you feel to know that for a long time now in fish farming, we have been throwing or should i say flushing away valuable money, and we call it the polluted water in our pond so, we just flush it away . While in developed countries , farmers will kill to have that same polluted water at any price .How do you feel when you realize that you can make extra 30 to 100 thousand naira weekly , from that your polluted fish water , at almost no additional cost of production , no additional cost of land just your same pond with double products to sell at additional profit .......Well its not magic , this is called AQUAPONICS SYSTEM .
The name may sound so big, but its a very simple system, by which your waste fish water is converted to fertilizer, to grow your vegetables tomatoes pepper and lots of other crops , without additional land or soil . These crops can be grown in water as its medium.
Let me break it down , when your fish escret, that is when your fish poo , combines with uneaten feed forms amonia in your pond water, do u know that, this same amonia can be broken down to nitrites then further broken down to nitrates bywhat is called beneficial bacteria and fungai in another chamber .To most science oriented people its called the nitrogen cycle , but forget the grammar .It
is a very simple system which, even an old grand parent in the village can operate well, if taught the abc of it.
These processes occur naturally in nature ,it really do not need your assistance to function . Do u know installing this in your already functioning fish farm, does not cost more than just 20 thousand naira , and weekly you can harvest cucumber, strawberry gabbage, lettuce, tomatoes , pepper ugu leaves , pumpkin leave bitter leaves etc . A lot more crops can be planted with this system without the need of extra land and soil .
Now i and my team have device a great way to recycle this water, through this system , back to your fish pond ,by gravity ensuring your fish gets a very clean water free of solid waste , ions, with a balance ph and well aerated water. This means u spend less energy ,there by aerating your pond in the process. With this process you can comfortable increase and stock 5 or more times the number of fishes you stock in a particular pond , spending less energy .
For more elaboration, do you know you can do this system almost any were and any tiny space, you can install it in your balcony , kitchen backyard etc and your family will eat fresh organic vegetables , tomatoes daily for better health cause its grown without inorganic fertilizer, no insecticide no herbicide ,pure natural organic product . In europe and other advance countries , these products cost more than the normal crops grown on soil , they are called BIO products, cause its more healthier for humans, when we eat organically grown food . And if you want to go commercial u can sell vegetables tomatoes weekly to people around your neighbourhood....
Let me further elaborate , do u know all these crops i mention can comfortably grow in only water without soil, and they grow 2 times as faster than the ones grown on soil, with 2 times better yield of the crops produce. For example if an tomatoes crop gives you 30 to 40 tomatoes fruits or seed, and it grows in 3 to 4 months depending on the specie of the tomatoes an aquaponic system based tomatoes will produce 50 or more fruit or crop and start producing in about 2 months or little more .This major reason is because in aquaponics system the roots take the nutrients straight from the water medium and conserves its energy . This energy is transfard by the roots to the crop to form growth and fruits ,while in the normal or soil system the root utilizes its energy to dig deeper into the soil looking for nutrients and minerals there by growing slower and yielding lower .
I want to let you know that plants do not feed on soil , they feed on nutrients and minerals in the soil , so if in aquaponics system the nutrients are just readily available to the roots, then they just take the nutrients direct without using up or burning up extra energy in looking for nutrients there by utilizing the extra energy gained,there by converting all that energy to growth and fruits making.
This implies that in aquaponics system , crops mature faster with better and faster yield this implies to better profits .
The advantages of aquaponics system is so much that, all can not be written in just one write up , do you know farmers using concrete ponds in there backyard can do this system as cover for there pond , there by no need looking for money to by tapolin or build costly roofs over there pond. What you need do is to install the system over your pond and it makes a proper shade and you go home making more profits weekly on the produce, you get on it at no additional cost ,space or soil. With just about 20k to install the pipes that will carry the water round and styrofoam to hold the plants firmly to the water .
Styrofoam is that thing that looks like white foam you see , when you buy new electronics ,the white carton u see inside a new electronic carton, to protect the electronic.There are lots other medium like the cheap rectangular or square light plastics that floats on water etc
With this our improvised system, you dont really need to buy the ready made bio fillter , the process its self is natural bio filtering on its own.
Let me take you through again in another explanation for a better understanding -
Aquaponics is a symbaotic relationship between plant and fish , meaning both your fish and plant gain from each other . Now your fish produces amonia in the water and the water becomes bad , the water is pumped out of your pond either by gravity flow or with any simple pump or just by opening the outlet of your pond .The amonia water goes through a pvc pipe to a chamber, this chamber can be any drum of 500 liters or more depending on the capacity of fish and plant you want to grow. This drum or chamber will contain simple and cheap materials like charcoal sponge foams gravel sands grass oystershell and a lots of other simple bio materials inside the drum .
Because of the organic materials in the drum , the beneficial bacterial grows naturally there and they feed on the bad or toxic amonia in the water ,in this process of feeding on the amonia , they breaks down the amonia to nitrites and then to nitrates .The nitrates water is filtered to remove all the solid undissolved waste naturally, by the components i mentioned earlier like the sand gravel foam sponge grass, these are very simple and cheap materials in the drum that acts as a solid waste filter and also as host for the bacteria to grow and multiply properly . From this chamber after the bacteria have completed the process of breaking the amonia to nitrates the nitrate cocentrated water is released through an outlet in the drum, goes through the pvc pipe to the plants ,were the plants roots absorbs the nitrate as there nutrients and you are left with a water free of nitrates and pure .This water is channeled back to the pond by gravitation , there by reducing the energy used, because we try to reduce cost by any means to maximize profit.
This fresh clean water free from all toxin when it enters your pond by gravity, either by shower or rose system takes oyygen in the atmosphere there by aerating your pond better. And when u have constant oxygen in your ponds . you can stock more fishes per square meter there by maximizing the use of a particular pond and increasing profit .
There are other systems i will treat later like HYDROPONICS , which is the planting of crops with only water , without soil and no fish and DIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM , which is planting your crop with fish water or non fish water but getting water staright to the roots directly for twice fast growth .
This systems are been installed in my farm, its still in progress , by GODS grace it will be completed by this month end, and i will be glad to shear the knowledge with everybody on this tread .

Really, so if it is not 5ft depth of water, it's not going to get to table size?

Both in concrete and earthen , catfish can get to table size with 4ft deep , in fact 4ft is more recommended for grow out, because adult catfish comes to the surface once in a while to take oxygen in the air, thats why, they do better than other fishes in very poor quality water and low oxygen ,than most other fishes. When your pond is too deep ,then they burn there energy which they need to gain weight for swimming to the surface . Every little thing counts, in fish farming for maximum profit , we dont overlook ,i advice 4ft and not more than ::GOD BLESS

@soft777 Oga mi, I don't think sir Robonski would be able to send just 1000 fingerlings to port harcourt as I see it isn't too convenient for him. On the pond I thought non-hollow 6 inches blocks would be better as the 9 inches blocks are mostly hollow and filling with concrete would be money waste. I would adopt the double plastering technique u adviced.
Can u give me a name or brand I could use as reference when buying the waterproof cement.
can the tillapia fries find their way out of the happa net for easier collection without disturbing the brood tilapia and what is the mesh size of the happa net to be used?

you can use the non hollow 6 inches it serve same purpose , and you can use any water proof cement . Go to any cement dealer they sell it . For the tilapia frie , they always stay close to there mother till after 9 days , cause they run into their mothers mouth anytime they sence, danger so at 9 days they are free swimmers and look for there own food, by then they cant pass through the mosquito mesh size ,they would have grown more than the size to be able to go out , you can always bring them out weekly , and feed ur catfish with it ,it does not disturb the parents but make sure all the parent fish mouth are check one by one because most tilapia produce more than 5k eggs every 14 days . so with about 10 female you may be getting free 50k eggs or fries to feed your fingerlings with that will greatly reduce your feed cost .USE NORMAL MOSQUITO NET TO MAKE YOUR HAPA ITS OK GOOD LUCK
